  • I struggled to find a nice looking affordable solution for outdoor curtain rods and brackets for our new 13' x 15' pergola. When I found a nice looking affordable solution, I figured I'd post it for everyone else! Here's what I used for my pergola curtains.

    Thank-you so much for posting this Dave!! We had gone through several variations of ‘curtain rods’ for our TOJA Grid pergola. Finally something that looked good, was affordable, and easy to install. To adapt it for the TOJA Grid we shortened the brackets and drilled new holes in them to match the screw holes of the TOJA Grid metal corner braces. To keep the curtains from blowing around on a windy day we installed trap door latches in our wooden deck and clip the corners of the curtains onto them.

      How long were the curtains you used on the toja grid? Was there a gap at the top?

    Smartest Guy on You Tube!!! Its so practical it hurts, ha. I like to re-use or dumpster dive for materials, could i buy it, Yes. But for me , its like a game to see where I can get it or what other way something can be made/done. So I failed this game, cause I have been rackin my brain for different rods, PVC, Wood, etc, etc. Then Dave popped on the screen and all is well again! Thanks.
    Ready for a humdinger....my name is Dave. Right!!! Great minds think....ooh wait wrong quote... hahaha Stay Smilin'

    I did much the same but I used Shower curtain liners, PVC pipe and pipe sockets ( one fully enclosed and the other 1/2 open). The sockets were hot glued to the aluminum frame which held up against 40 - 60 MPH winds. One PVC section was too long and sagged so I used 5/4 PT boards and ripped it into a rectangle that was a firm fit in the PVC pipe. Still straight as an arrow. The top we used plastic shower rings that holds up well.
    I tried several methods to hold the bottom still but most were metal or plastic and they would bang on the screen room frame. I'm sewing a pocket across the bottom and will use a galvanized wire in the pocket and will anchor it with eyebolts anchored in the pool deck. I'll also consider somehow securing it to the lower part of the screen room frame, through nylon grommets.
    As I am writing this I recall adding wind screens to the Community tennis courts. They laid against chain link fencing. They were tied with zip ties to the fence. The top ties were smaller and weaker than the bottom. This is so strong winds would cause the weaker top zip ties to fail and the windscreen would lay down on the court and not pull the fence down. Well, a little more engineering to do.

    Great job, may I recommend putting the rod behind the ban joist? Maybe wrap with a 2×12 so it can be hidden and not bother the 2×10 joists going across? Just a thought have a great day!

    As of March 2024, I can find these brackets on Amazon, but I can't find the Peak Products steel chain link fence rails anywhere--not on Peak Products site or the Home Depot site. I suspect they are no longer being made. Sad, as these looked really nice. I am going to call Peak Products, just to make sure. Great idea anyway. Maybe we can find something else that will work...

      Hi Suzanne. I bought outdoor curtain holdbacks/tiebacks on Amazon that were suitable for outdoors. Most of the time they're great. Other times, I've had to loop the curtain around the tieback and tuck it in between the main curtain and our pergola post - works.

    How did you cut the fence rails to the size you needed? I asked at Lowes and they had no clue.

    • @brynlunddave8139
      @brynlunddave8139  3 роки тому +3

      The fence rails cut easily with a hacksaw. Home Depot or Lowes may actually cut them for you upon request... but for me, I'd rather cut on sight to ensure a snug fit with careful measurements.

    How has this held up since it has been about 6 months since install? Any bowing/bending in the rod?

    • @brynlunddave8139
      @brynlunddave8139  3 роки тому +6

      I'm still very happy with it. The fence post itself doesn't bend, which is likely better than an actual curtain rod. Because I'm utilizing for 13' and 15' distances, I do need to add a piece of another fence post to span the distance. There is a very slight dip at the connection point - not enough to bother me, and not enough that it catches your attention unless you're studying it. Ideally, if your distance is 10' or less, you should experience no bend whatsoever.

      Each rail is tapered and fits snuggly and easily into the non-tapered end of another rail.

  • @laelaw3166
    @laelaw3166 6 місяців тому

    I’m looking at doing this exact same thing. Can I ask you how you extended the poles so they were long enough for the space? Also it’s been 3 years, have they sagged at all in that time?

    • @brynlunddave8139
      @brynlunddave8139  6 місяців тому

      They are 10ft 1/3" fence rails that are tapered. You either hacksaw one to make it shorter, or you piece two together and hacksaw off any excess. These fence rails are easily cut. If you're looking at over 15' or so, I strongly suggest using a hangar for a bit of support so that they don't sag.

      a matter of opinion I suppose. In Canada we get a foot of snow easy... didn't want them dragging in the snow and slush... and I certainly didn't want the curtain rods lower on the pergola.
