  • On this week’s podcast Jon Stewart is joined by Ashley Parker, Senior National Political Correspondent for The Washington Post, and David Graham, staff writer at The Atlantic to break down the Harris / Trump debate and what comes next. In an election cycle where debates have been more impactful than ever, what influence has the first meeting between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump had on voters? Together, we explore how debate formats constrain real messaging, which candidates gained or lost ground, and, of course, where the campaigns go from here.

i'm a moderate independent, before Biden dropped out I was expecting him to drop out, but was hoping against hope that he didn't endorse Kamala, I thought she was milque toast, no flavor or character. I have been proven wrong, Kamala has proven herself over and over now, culminating in this debate. She is witty, relatable and just savagely dunked on Trump during the debate. She implied he was easy to manipulate and then proceeded to demonstrate that fact.
I am incredibly happy with her pitch to the center.

My first impression of her, at a rally seven years ago in defense of the ACA was "fearless."
Her first job was prosecuting rapists, sexual abusers, perpetrators of incest, and the occasional gang member. A 5'2 black woman can't do that effectively if she doesn't command a room, and it explains how she's able to project that mixture of warmth (which I believe is authentic) and fierceness. Her parents were part of the Civil Rights Movement.
I have a clip of the end of Harris' powerful speech from the first day I saw her.
When I arrived at that ACA rally, I was feeling pretty glum. The GOP had just taken both houses of Congress, and Trump was about to be sworn in, and they vowed to repeal the ACA on day one. I have pre-existing conditions and had only gotten health insurance once Obamacare went into effect.
Harris' speech anticipated a lot of what she's said recently on reproductive rights, healthcare, prescription drugs.
She concluded with a call to action for those of us who were feeling discouraged at Trump being elected:
"Do not be overwhelmed. Do not throw up your hands but roll up our sleeves and FIGHT!"
that has kept me going on some depressing days.

You and I are cut from the same cloth, sir. Registered independent since 18 years old, centrist who leans a bit right on some issues and a bit left on others, and being from Palm Beach County and knowing who Trump really was before his TV show and the rise of his popularity, I would never vote for him. After the first debate, I said to my wife (who has done contracted work at Maralago several times and hates the man), "Biden has to drop out, and the Democrats CANT pick Kamala Harris to replace him". I was very uncomfortable with the outlook of this election early on. But after her DNC speech, and now seeing this debate, I will be proud to say I am voting Harris/Walz, and I feel good about it.

You have to remember that Trump voters don’t believe any of that happened or believe it was some type of deep state action. They cannot hold their (perceived) side as accountable unless it’s for positive outcomes. It’s in their catchphrase make America great again. None of them can answer when this was, unless it relates to their own lives, this is what Trump is playing to, aged and afraid white folk, they’re not in their prime and are scared of aging, any time when they were young was better. Never mind that they were broke, knocked up, involved in personal drama, getting drunk as their only hobby with friends, etc.

He has no capacity for empathy, no analytical discipline, and no problem solving skills. To be fair Harris has no problem solving skills either(they don't teach that in law school) but I can see the empathy and the will to make one's self better. Which is a cut above both Trxmp & Biden too. I don't have full confidence in her though because she lacks transparency and advanced deep dive discussions just don't seem to take place around her. It's too emotion based. No difference from Trxmp as she approaches political positions as a mass of conflicting impulses rather than analyzing our needs.

I can't imagine how challenging it must be for college kids to participate right now. To know whats going on, to know how to vote, where to go, to understand the issues and the potential ramifications of each candidate, to even believe that their vote matters... @@MsFrazzMoon It’s been a day or two or 50 years since I first voted. It was the first election after Watergate happened. 1976 seemed like such a clear choice. I voted for Carter. As a young voter, it was more of a feeling of trust than specific issues. 1980 was murkier. Reagan seemed more confident, and I was still not focusing on issues.
The next few years were awful and it was my last election as an uneducated voter. Ever since then, I’ve come to understand the importance of economics, social justice, civil rights, and the health and welfare of our citizens and our planet and voted for the party that most closely aligned with my beliefs. I’ve also learned the importance of international trade and alliances. Even before we were a nation, we relied on trade all over the world to invigorate our economy. We’ve never been a nation solely dependent upon ourselves.
Every election has its consequences. Even some of my preferred presidents have made choices I never agreed with. Understanding they are human, fallible and political people and not my best friend helps me make a practical choice.
There has rarely been a time in my almost 70 years, everything has gone according to plan. Wars, genocides, discrimination, poverty, economic chaos, climate disasters, innovation, pollution, and political upheaval all played a part in where we are now.
There is a lot riding on this election. That’s not hyperbole. There are two very different governing philosophies competing for power. I know what my choice is because as imperfect as our society and government are in 2024, I’m not ready to tear it all down and give up more freedoms than I have already lost. Not for me so much, because I’m old and could probably survive whatever happens. But the younger generation and kids deserve better. That’s why I’ll always keep my head up, work and vote.

Women often weren’t accustomed to it and men wouldn’t because, well I guess I can’t speak for them. Some men would shake the other mens’ hands, but not mine unless I initiated it. I was taught to shake hands firmly when meeting a colleague, potential employer or customer, as a sign of respect. By the time my career was over, 2011, many more men and women were used to shaking hands with a woman.

@@elizabethconnolly3260 I have NO idea what this men/women handshake thing is about. I spent almost 20 years selling enterprise software to Fortune 1000 companies. Typically on day one of my "pitch" I'd walk into the prospect's meeting/conference room and there'd be anywhere from 4 to 8 or 10 people already seated. I'd walk around the table and introduce myself to each person or, sometimes reach around / across the table and shake hands with each person ..... men and women. Never occurred to me NOT to intro myself while quickly shaking EVERYONE'S hand. If someone (man OR woman) excused themselves during the presentation and stood up to leave saying something like "I'm sorry Mr. James..... I have a 2 O'clock meeting in accounting " I'd always thank them for coming and SHAKE THEIR HAND as they left. Man or woman. Never occurred to me not to. But I'm an old coot (75) now and that was 25 years ago ..... so I guess I just don't understand these dang kids today :)

Division in the USA is what Putin wants. Division has also been the GOP tactic, implemented via FOX News, for as long as I can remember. Bush was re-elected in 2004 purely thanks to fearmongering in the GOP at all levels about gay marriage. 2008 they tried and failed to run on racist dogwhistles. 2012 they ran, and lost, on Ayn Rand classist dogwhistles. 2016 was just misogynist smear after misogynist smear against Clinton. 2020 was all about transphobia. This year the GOP and FOX News clearly want everyone to hate immigrants. Division sucks but I have had zero confusion, since my teens, about who's been to blame. You'd think conservatives would get exhausted from hating and fearing all of the time, but they still do it. Sad way to spend one's life.

That is Trump in a nutshell. He will do anything to get ahead regardless of the collateral damage. This is why many people call him a sociopath. Here are 11 traits of sociopaths/people with antisocial personality disorder (APD) from the Cleveland Clinic:
      - Not understanding the difference between right and wrong.
      - Not respecting the feelings and emotions of others.
      - Constant lying or deception.
      - Being callous.
      - Difficulty recognizing emotion.
      - Manipulation.
      - Arrogance.
      - Violating the rights of others through dishonest actions.
      - Impulsiveness.
      - Risk-taking.
      - Difficulty appreciating the negative aspects of their behavior.
Also check out the symptoms for narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) from the Mayo Clinic.
      - Have an unreasonably high sense of self-importance and require constant, excessive admiration.
      - Feel that they deserve privileges and special treatment.
      - Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements.
      - Make achievements and talents seem bigger than they are.
      - Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate.
      - Believe they are superior to others and can only spend time with or be understood by equally special people.
      - Be critical of and look down on people they feel are not important.
      - Expect special favors and expect other people to do what they want without questioning them.
      - Take advantage of others to get what they want.
      - Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others.
      - Be envious of others and believe others envy them.
      - Behave in an arrogant way, brag a lot and come across as conceited.
      - Insist on having the best of everything - for instance, the best car or office.
Lots of overlap there. Psychology Today has an article ("Comparing Narcissistic and Antisocial Personality") that points out individuals with NPD are "not typically associated with a history of criminality in adulthood or conduct disorder in childhood." So maybe that fits Trump better.
None of use has evaluated Trump in the proper way to make a diagnosis, but it is clear Trump is so easily manipulated by individuals who praise (Putin, Orban, Kim Jong Un) or challenge (as Harris did in the debate) him and he will do almost anything to "win" or just look good.

Whatever percentage of them are voting age, or will be by November, has to make a difference. I think her support is significant to Harris' campaign. I thenk it moves the needle quite a lot, just by raw mathing.

It's not that politicians are out of touch with their constituents. The problem is the incentives don't align between the voters and the politicians. It's no coincidence that those representatives that are not already multi-millionaires eventually become multi-millionaires.

How about a few topics on some of the possible solutions out there. 1. The Buffet Rule 2. Down ballot voting 3. What are the goods and bads of term limits 4. What can be do to better define journalism vs. opinion to better inform the citizenry? Does it matter? 5. The new C-span problem (Schrodinger's Congress). Can we change the rules of congress/interaction to actually get to solutions? Maybe a Katie Porter approach to defining the problems of ordinary people? My ideas.

Ban lobbyists from speaking with those in office, ban politicians from becoming lobbyists, ban politicians and their family members from being able to buy and sell individual stocks, and base the pay of politicians on average pay among their constituents. Basically, we need guardrails so that politicians are motivated to improve the lives of their voters as opposed working for corporate interests.

Assuming you use GPS, check the weather, or have an FDIC insured bank account, those are all thanks to the federal government. By the time he met her again at the 9/11 memorial, he was forced to not only look at her due to the debate humiliation, he again attempted to show dominance with his weird grab and pull handshake, which again, was highly unsuccessful as she stood her ground. This time, he came off like a creepy, weird old man who was holding on to her hand too long.

      1) What do you trust more: a salesperson cold calling you about a product or you going to the internet and finding that same product from research?
      2) Why do people trust vitamins and supplements they personally find more than prescriptions from doctors?
      3) Why do people feel more at ease driving when airline flights are statistically safer?
The role and illusion of control is why conspiracies exist.

    • @cbpd89
      @cbpd89 2 місяці тому

@dangerfly yes. People have a hard time acknowledging that accidents happen and things are random.
Sometimes cancer happens, or loss happens, or your kids are on the autism spectrum, or whatever. It's hard to accept the answer "these things just happen and there isn't a clear cause or reason." It's so comforting to hear, "yes, there is a reason, I have all the answers: it's vaccines, it's 5G, it's vitamins, it's something you can control for."
People want answers, they want control, so when they're hurting they will turn to the person who gives them dishonest answers, not the person who gives them an honest "no one knows."
