- Опубліковано 21 лис 2024
- On this week’s podcast Jon Stewart is joined by Ashley Parker, Senior National Political Correspondent for The Washington Post, and David Graham, staff writer at The Atlantic to break down the Harris / Trump debate and what comes next. In an election cycle where debates have been more impactful than ever, what influence has the first meeting between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump had on voters? Together, we explore how debate formats constrain real messaging, which candidates gained or lost ground, and, of course, where the campaigns go from here.

i'm a moderate independent, before Biden dropped out I was expecting him to drop out, but was hoping against hope that he didn't endorse Kamala, I thought she was milque toast, no flavor or character. I have been proven wrong, Kamala has proven herself over and over now, culminating in this debate. She is witty, relatable and just savagely dunked on Trump during the debate. She implied he was easy to manipulate and then proceeded to demonstrate that fact.
I am incredibly happy with her pitch to the center.
👍🏾🤜🏽🤜🏽👏🏾🫶🏽🎉
My first impression of her, at a rally seven years ago in defense of the ACA was "fearless."
Her first job was prosecuting rapists, sexual abusers, perpetrators of incest, and the occasional gang member. A 5'2 black woman can't do that effectively if she doesn't command a room, and it explains how she's able to project that mixture of warmth (which I believe is authentic) and fierceness. Her parents were part of the Civil Rights Movement.
I have a clip of the end of Harris' powerful speech from the first day I saw her.
When I arrived at that ACA rally, I was feeling pretty glum. The GOP had just taken both houses of Congress, and Trump was about to be sworn in, and they vowed to repeal the ACA on day one. I have pre-existing conditions and had only gotten health insurance once Obamacare went into effect.
Harris' speech anticipated a lot of what she's said recently on reproductive rights, healthcare, prescription drugs.
She concluded with a call to action for those of us who were feeling discouraged at Trump being elected:
"Do not be overwhelmed. Do not throw up your hands but roll up our sleeves and FIGHT!"
that has kept me going on some depressing days.
She is not who I want, but I DO NOT want Trump more.
You and I are cut from the same cloth, sir. Registered independent since 18 years old, centrist who leans a bit right on some issues and a bit left on others, and being from Palm Beach County and knowing who Trump really was before his TV show and the rise of his popularity, I would never vote for him. After the first debate, I said to my wife (who has done contracted work at Maralago several times and hates the man), "Biden has to drop out, and the Democrats CANT pick Kamala Harris to replace him". I was very uncomfortable with the outlook of this election early on. But after her DNC speech, and now seeing this debate, I will be proud to say I am voting Harris/Walz, and I feel good about it.
She is deeply impressive in so many ways. AND she doesn't seem to hate my gender by default.
Make no mistake…. The handshake, direct eye contact and introduction of her name (from her mouth to his ears)
was an intentional power move…. that worked because he never looked at her again.
dog with his tail between his legs...
The way he folded I think he will be unable to say Harris can’t stand up to world leaders like he could. He folded in front of Putin and Kim.
I do believe also that he has a crush on VP hence the eye contact avoidance and unease in her presence. 😊
@@wwiya93jp Based on some of the things he's said about her, I believe that too.
This is the reason he didn’t testify. He’s never done anything honestly or with ethical intention.
Crowd size, inheritance, Wharton, world leaders laughing at him, generals calling him a disgrace, and the great thing is that all the things that baited him were *true*
And worked!
When she said he was boring, his baby blues popped open. Only time during the whole debate I saw the whites of his eyes
My most fave shot was when she informed him~
"Putin will eat you for lunch,"
@@gloriabaumstimler2729 what we couldn't see was the bile rising up his gorge
and yet he still has a chance to win because this country is full of idiots.
I’m 70. Been very interested in politics forever. Seeing these smiling intelligent faces makes me so proud of them!
The handshake was masterful but I really loved that she introduced herself. That was just a little smack in the face just between the two of them since he kept saying "I don't know who she is". Perfect and I've only seen one commentator before this even notice it.
Two-fold..they had never met before and I'm sure other things
And nobody talks about them never meeting before.
Although they were mentioning it before the debate.
They also didn't meet before because he refused to participate in the traditional peaceful transfer of power in 2021.
It could also be seen as a prod about how to pronounce her name.
@@sllukyliterally everyone mentioned her giving out the right pronunciation of her and the fact that they never met before due to his attempted coup. These aren’t brilliant observations. We live in a 24 hour news cycle. These are recycle talking points for pundits.
My best moment of the debate was when Kamala Harris turned to Donald Trump and told him to his face that all those who worked closely with him said, "You are a disgrace." That was a dagger to his heart. I dont think anyone ever told him he was wrong before, let alone tell him you're a disgrace. That was a sweet moment. Vote blue 💙 people
@@candor-tt4836 that was beautiful, even better than Biden's, "Will you shut up, man?!"
Yes that was the top remark
I've been taking balm in Jon's humorous analysis sice my teens in the early 2000's, and thank goodness he's doing this podcast Now. Something about the questions he asks and the answers he gets helps make everything more sensible and contextualized in a way no one else seems able to do. (Maybe Colbert.)
Thank you, Jon. You help so many, so much.
Americans are too a d d for policy, they want someone to have a beer with. Hillary had all the policy and lost.
Am I better off now than I was at the end of Trump's term?
There aren't refrigerator trucks full of bodies waiting to be buried in major cities anymore. So we've got that going for us...
This should not be a close election just on the strength of this FACT. But, this is the state of the country's collective inability to recognize basic truth.
You have to remember that Trump voters don’t believe any of that happened or believe it was some type of deep state action. They cannot hold their (perceived) side as accountable unless it’s for positive outcomes. It’s in their catchphrase make America great again. None of them can answer when this was, unless it relates to their own lives, this is what Trump is playing to, aged and afraid white folk, they’re not in their prime and are scared of aging, any time when they were young was better. Never mind that they were broke, knocked up, involved in personal drama, getting drunk as their only hobby with friends, etc.
How quickly people forget his Covid lies!
Seriously though, people bring up covid as if it was a point in his favor that he had an excuse for the worst economy in 100 years,
Trxmp was completely absent from scientific discussion. He doesn't appreciate the views others might have. He has no capacity for empathy, no analytical discipline, and no problem solving skills. To be fair Harris has no problem solving skills either(they don't teach that in law school) but I can see the empathy and the will to make one's self better. Which is a cut above both Trxmp & Biden too. I don't have full confidence in her though because she lacks transparency and advanced deep dive discussions just don't seem to take place around her. It's too emotion based. No difference from Trxmp as she approaches political positions as a mass of conflicting impulses rather than analyzing our needs.
Thank you, Jon, for helping me to maintain some semblance of sanity during these nightmarish times. You are a treasure. 💙
Kamala's first move in walking directly to Trump, forcing him to shake hands while stating her name so he'd get it right....priceless. I'm sure it had multiple reasons attached but certainly for the Fox crowd who have been told "world leaders and generals would have their way with her".
Her advisors instructed her to do that and she recited her lines from all week rehearsing -- and the ABC family deceived you big time, because you apparently never heard that Kamala and the woman running ABC are sorority sisters. Linsey Davis, the ABC News "journalist" is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the same sorority as Vice President Kamala Harris.
She probably told him "I'm the one holding the forbe magazine. Don't forget!" 😂
Harris won, Trump had a tantrum, and now he won't debate anymore. I love it.
The presidential debate in a nutshell:
Harris: "Hey Donald, I bet you can't dig you own grave."
Trump: "Oh yeah, watch me, nobody digs better graves than me"
🤣🤣🤣@@BlindedByLogic
"I'm takin' my ball and goin' home! Mmph!"
In related news, the Cleveland Browns have cancelled their NFL season because they won the last 24 Super Bowls, World Cups, Miss America pageants and Indy 500s and had nothing else to prove.
Trump is frightened to death of Kamala Harris.
The handshake was done exactly how a corporate manager meeting a potential employee does it. She was asserting that she was in control.
Who else really enjoyed the fact that there was no audience?
What's the big deal either way?
Absolutely yes!
@@jacobwansleebenBecause trump becomes impotent, when there's no crowd to play to. His narcissistic ego needs adulation, and he just can't perform.
@@jacobwansleeben Have you ever had to give an incredibly important speech to a packed auditorium that was half filled with people who adored you and were cheering as hard as they could for you, while the other half hated you and were jeering and hissing at you? I'm going to guess no, but I have done something very similar and let me assure you it's a completely different experience than standing at a podium before a camera and three calm and polite question askers.
@@ZZ-sb8os I'm getting the sense that you're implying that American debate audiences are largely uncontrolled. If so, that checks out, I'd believe that. 👍
FYI, this never came up in the Media. I was living on base towards the end of Trumps Presidency. Remember when Ivanka and Trump were posing with that Mexican brand “Goya”?Well shortly after this, all of the Mexican brands that my daughter likes, that don’t have high fructose corn syrup in them. (She’s obsessed with no HCS) we’re all replaced with “Goya” brand. In all the commissaries on military bases. Using the military to get kick backs? Gross
I will never forget that Goya thing, because he did it in THE OVAL OFFICE.
It was a clear sign of authoritarianism: “look, I do what I want, where I want”
He used the most respected spot in the most respected house of the United States as a little shopping tent to sell canned food, to favor his supporters.
He mocked not only Mexican Americans (I’m one of them), he mocked the integrity of this country.
HFCS gives me heartburn, I only figured it out after I started cutting it out.
Oh as a Brit I will never forget that desecration of the Resolute Desk.
Donald Trump took everything good and honourable and shit all over it. For crying out loud in May 2017 in the Oval Office he passed allied information to the Russian Foreign Minister and the Russian Ambassador 😳. And no-one did anything, not his cabinet, not his security and intelligence services, not Congress, not the DoJ.....
That was the first time he claimed he could do what he wanted because he was President.
And he never stopped.....
I'm so glad you mentioned that. I didn't know the Army had started procuring Goya. Just advertising a product from the Resolute Desk demeaned the White House and the presidency.
He did so much fleecing. He had the Secret Service and visiting foreign officials stay at the Trump Tower and charged extra to the taxpayers. He also (allegedly) sold 250 pardons for $2 million apiece, split it with Giuliani who set them up.
I didn't know the military starting buying Goya, smh.
Haitians are living in fear. We have a small Haitian community, and the fear is palpable.
Really sad. These people have already endured terrible things in their home country.
I am sorry you are going through that. The accusations are absurd. Please stay safe.
I'm sorry. Haitian immigrantss are good hardworking people. I am glad that the Haitian community is here.
Stay strong, stay safe 🙏

My two kids are in their early 20s. They tell me many of their peers aren’t planning to vote (!!!). If Taylor Swift can get that generation to register to vote AND go and vote, then her endorsement was significant.
Wow! Not surprised but so disappointed.
I can't imagine being a young first time voter right now. It's overwhelming and frustrating for me, to the point where every day I have to mindfully and purposefully combat the desire to just bury my head in the sand. I can't imagine how challenging it must be for college kids to participate right now. To know whats going on, to know how to vote, where to go, to understand the issues and the potential ramifications of each candidate, to even believe that their vote matters... It's super depressing to hear, but not at all surprising.
@@MsFrazzMoon It’s been a day or two or 50 years since I first voted. It was the first election after Watergate happened. 1976 seemed like such a clear choice. I voted for Carter. As a young voter, it was more of a feeling of trust than specific issues. 1980 was murkier. Reagan seemed more confident, and I was still not focusing on issues.
The next few years were awful and it was my last election as an uneducated voter. Ever since then, I’ve come to understand the importance of economics, social justice, civil rights, and the health and welfare of our citizens and our planet and voted for the party that most closely aligned with my beliefs. I’ve also learned the importance of international trade and alliances. Even before we were a nation, we relied on trade all over the world to invigorate our economy. We’ve never been a nation solely dependent upon ourselves.
Every election has its consequences. Even some of my preferred presidents have made choices I never agreed with. Understanding they are human, fallible and political people and not my best friend helps me make a practical choice.
There has rarely been a time in my almost 70 years, everything has gone according to plan. Wars, genocides, discrimination, poverty, economic chaos, climate disasters, innovation, pollution, and political upheaval all played a part in where we are now.
There is a lot riding on this election. That’s not hyperbole. There are two very different governing philosophies competing for power. I know what my choice is because as imperfect as our society and government are in 2024, I’m not ready to tear it all down and give up more freedoms than I have already lost. Not for me so much, because I’m old and could probably survive whatever happens. But the younger generation and kids deserve better. That’s why I’ll always keep my head up, work and vote.
@@lovesmusic0845 very well said! Thank you for your perspective
Let's hope the young folks follow through on their resolve to vote. They usually have the lowest turn out rate...
That handshake established dominance. She comes into his turf by actually walking to HIS podium. Firm grip, she says her name clearly. HE mumbles and most likely, limp wristed that shake. That established what was to come.
She's a prosecutor. She knows intimidation matters. LOL
She's dealt with hundreds of Donald trumps....he dealt with Kamala Harris twice.
I'm old enough to remember media discussing (with video clips to illustrate) how Trump would establish dominance with a firm handshake that jerked the other towards Trump's body.
Totally lacking in the debate stage encounter with Harris.
The only thing he managed to hang onto was not stepping back from her approach.
I think he something like “have fun” - a classic fallback from someone who had no idea what to say
I had no idea about their pre-debate trolling, genius
that’s why I love these discussions! So much better than clips and opinions. Not having to hear the same old s*** on every channel is so refreshing. Thank you.
Trump sprinted to the spin room after the debate because he had to quickly intercept any talk of his poor performance. He knows nobody else was going to be able to gaslight like he can.
He thinks the answer to every problem is “more Trump”

Great discussion! Calm, concise, thoughtful, funny, informative. Thank you for not treating me like an idiot!
Love this show. Debate format that the viewer subjected is brilliant. Make trump and Kamala take a test, 5 questions, 45 minutes. Let the moderator read their answers in real time…..brilliant

A woman taking initiative in greeting a man and shaking his hand is what woman have had to do for YEARS in the corporate world.
Yep. And he never recovered from that very moment-it showed her strength and respect to have to chase him down for that. So proud of her.
Taking the initiative is what EVERYONE has to do in the corporate world. What?
She speaks the truth. Often when I was in management, traveling to other offices meeting people, some men and women did not initiate shaking hands. I (woman) was the one to do it. Women often weren’t accustomed to it and men wouldn’t because, well I guess I can’t speak for them. Some men would shake the other mens’ hands, but not mine unless I initiated it. I was taught to shake hands firmly when meeting a colleague, potential employer or customer, as a sign of respect. By the time my career was over, 2011, many more men and women were used to shaking hands with a woman.
@@elizabethconnolly3260 I have NO idea what this men/women handshake thing is about. I spent almost 20 years selling enterprise software to Fortune 1000 companies. Typically on day one of my "pitch" I'd walk into the prospect's meeting/conference room and there'd be anywhere from 4 to 8 or 10 people already seated. I'd walk around the table and introduce myself to each person or, sometimes reach around / across the table and shake hands with each person ..... men and women. Never occurred to me NOT to intro myself while quickly shaking EVERYONE'S hand. If someone (man OR woman) excused themselves during the presentation and stood up to leave saying something like "I'm sorry Mr. James..... I have a 2 O'clock meeting in accounting " I'd always thank them for coming and SHAKE THEIR HAND as they left. Man or woman. Never occurred to me not to. But I'm an old coot (75) now and that was 25 years ago ..... so I guess I just don't understand these dang kids today :)
I was raised that the prooer etiquette for a man is not to offer his hand to a woman. She has to initiate, and I always have. @elizabethconnolly3260
33:37 "what does it actually mean to be UNDECIDED???"
David Sedaris :
"To be UNDECIDED is like being on an airplane and the flight attendant asks: “Can I interest you in the chicken? Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”
To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.
I just don’t want another four years like the four we had before. Ugh. The thought of it is exhausting. So divisive and hurtful to anyone who dares to disagree.
Division in the USA is what Putin wants. Division has also been the GOP tactic, implemented via FOX News, for as long as I can remember. Bush was re-elected in 2004 purely thanks to fearmongering in the GOP at all levels about gay marriage. 2008 they tried and failed to run on racist dogwhistles. 2012 they ran, and lost, on Ayn Rand classist dogwhistles. 2016 was just misogynist smear after misogynist smear against Clinton. 2020 was all about transphobia. This year the GOP and FOX News clearly want everyone to hate immigrants. Division sucks but I have had zero confusion, since my teens, about who's been to blame. You'd think conservatives would get exhausted from hating and fearing all of the time, but they still do it. Sad way to spend one's life.
He’ll be worse next time. One , he’s loosing his mind. Two, he can never run again so he knows this is his last chance to be a dictator….take over then get revenge. Which is what this run is about. That and staying out of prison.
8 years imo
The thing the Harris campaign does't do well enough is to distinguish overall economic trends from corporate price gouging. People don't make the distinction between why prices are high from inflation, versus why prices are high because of profiteering.
Only 2 min time. Hit it, move on then talk about it on the trail.

That's amazing
The new black is high key disgusting work. But I'm sure many see that as funny.
I'm constantly reminded why Jon Stewart puts me in a state of great love for him and in how much of a fvcking genius he is. Also I rarely feel empathy from famous people but I get the feeling he is highly empathic. We need more of these kinds of individuals than another billionaire.

That is Trump in a nutshell. He will do anything to get ahead regardless of the collateral damage. This is why many people call him a sociopath. Here are 11 traits of sociopaths/people with antisocial personality disorder (APD) from the Cleveland Clinic:
- Not understanding the difference between right and wrong.
- Not respecting the feelings and emotions of others.
- Constant lying or deception.
- Being callous.
- Difficulty recognizing emotion.
- Manipulation.
- Arrogance.
- Violating the rights of others through dishonest actions.
- Impulsiveness.
- Risk-taking.
- Difficulty appreciating the negative aspects of their behavior.
Also check out the symptoms for narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) from the Mayo Clinic.
- Have an unreasonably high sense of self-importance and require constant, excessive admiration.
- Feel that they deserve privileges and special treatment.
- Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements.
- Make achievements and talents seem bigger than they are.
- Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate.
- Believe they are superior to others and can only spend time with or be understood by equally special people.
- Be critical of and look down on people they feel are not important.
- Expect special favors and expect other people to do what they want without questioning them.
- Take advantage of others to get what they want.
- Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others.
- Be envious of others and believe others envy them.
- Behave in an arrogant way, brag a lot and come across as conceited.
- Insist on having the best of everything - for instance, the best car or office.
Lots of overlap there. Psychology Today has an article ("Comparing Narcissistic and Antisocial Personality") that points out individuals with NPD are "not typically associated with a history of criminality in adulthood or conduct disorder in childhood." So maybe that fits Trump better.
None of use has evaluated Trump in the proper way to make a diagnosis, but it is clear Trump is so easily manipulated by individuals who praise (Putin, Orban, Kim Jong Un) or challenge (as Harris did in the debate) him and he will do almost anything to "win" or just look good.
I'll say this about Taylor Swift. I don't care about her politics one way or the other, and her support means nothing to me. But her one ballot drafts 130 million followers in its wake. Whatever percentage of them are voting age, or will be by November, has to make a difference. I think her support is significant to Harris' campaign. I thenk it moves the needle quite a lot, just by raw mathing.
It’s in his book!! He says if you just repeat a lie enough that people will believe it. And that’s how he lives his life.
It's actually from the Nazi propaganda play book. "A lie told once remains a lie but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth." --Joseph Goebbels
That was actually Goebbels, the nazi propaganda mastermind.
It’s true as is the fact that ppl often vote fir the person they see most regardless of policy - hence the battle for media dominance.
As a voter I’m furious. The billionaires took everyone’s $. The politicians let them.
The politicians are a part of it.
I think very few politicians are for the little guy rather than their rich donors, but I do think Trump is more for billionaires than even the average politician.

I think many of us are now 8 years into the internal conflict with family and friends, and its been 8 years of asking the question how to break the crazy spell on people and getting nowhere on it, Most of us our now asking some tough personal questions about cutting off family members and friends for the foreseeable future just to save our own sanity. perhaps the next few months and or 4 years will finally break us or make crazies move on.

You have no idea how far these cats and dogs have been running. In My neck of the woods (Belgium) we had full covering of the current situation in Springfield. It's all reported in our national newspapers. The Influx of Haitians, the sad accident killing a schoolkid. The kids parents having to call for politicians to leave them in peace.
Those cats and dogs gone right around the world.
If THAT guy becomes pResident again the world is NOT going to like you.
Lets not forget this was Harris's FIRST presidential debate and Trumps Seventh! BY ALL ACCOUNTS HE HAD THE ADVANTAGE.....And SHE STILL UPSTAGED HIM! Could she have answered more questions regarding her policies... Absolutely! BUT this was more about showing her poise and articulation and the ability to keep calm under the copious amounts of lies and yelling coming from Trump, IT PROVED SHE WONT BE " TO EMOTIONAL" ... as the right would say..... like Trump demonstrated.
She had the advantage of not being an idiot and a sociopath, though. That helps.
I don't think she should've answered more questions.
She clearly came to the debate with specific things she wanted to express, and she had to find places to make sure they got said.
Plus, she knew that Trump was going to just blow off most questions, so she knew that closely obeying and answering all the questions as asked would be a waste and of no real benefit.
She said what she knew she needed to say, and that's what's important.
Women have been demonized forever. An example - the word - hysterectomy come from hysteria. Got it? Listen carefully to a man running for office against a woman and you’ll hear a r eference to a comment regarding that she is “hysterically” promoting an agenda point.
I got married the year that women couldn’t get a mortgage without a man “giving” permission for her to do so - same with a credit cards and car loans.
@@itsROMPERS...I genuinely hate that debates are no longer about policy, as I remember when that was the norm for all political debates. Debates now are about character, poise, who has the vibe… and Harris did great with that. Still would have loved to hear about policy; I miss those political norms
Yeah within the format she said as much about her policies as possible. I personally hope she will do some town halls with undecided voters. Not the fake ones Trump did pre debate.
In all seriousness, clinically speaking, the Harris campaign clearly got their hands on the 'dealing with a Malignant Narcissist' handbook, and made the most of it.
It's been nine years, and you still don't have a plan. 😂
Come on! He has the concepts of a plan to make a plan!
offering IVF is not the same as removing Womens' choice in their own healthcare
Yes, offering help with IVF is fine if the funding can be sorted and all that...but what happens when an IVF-created pregnancy goes wrong in some way? Being able to access IVF isn't helpful if the woman can't access the care she needs for a pregnancy-gone-wrong in places with stupid abortion restrictions/bans. Especially given that women who need IVF in order to be pregnant in the first place are more likely to have difficult pregnancies.
I keep telling people, you gotta go Real Olde School with Trump. You know, Garlic, Fire, Crucifixes, Stakes. He sure healed quick from that vicious gunshot wound.
One of my JC professors was a congressional aide, I asked him when politics started to get stupid. he told me “It was around the time politicians started being in front of the camera all the time, I knew plenty of intelligent thoughtful people who would become clowns as soon as they were in front of a camera”. So the C-Span breaking government comment really hits hard.
I heard the Wharton one right off the bat and couldn’t wait for him to lose it. 😂 absolutely brilliant debate strategy.
I was hoping she would make a dig about him hiding his school transcripts too when she mentioned it, but it wasn't necessary 😂😂😂
OMG. That handshake at the beginning was SO telling! She had to seek Trump out cause he did not have the constitution to do the right thing from the START!
I know the dog and cat thing is funny to us. But driving to work today I saw a single middle aged woman with a hand made sign reading "save our dogs and our babies trump 2024" people actually believe this shit.....
If you have Haitian friends, it's not so funny. OK - I admit some of the memes are hilarious :) . BUT, this bit about Haitians eating people's pets is an old xenophobic trope that someone on Facebook and Laura Loomer (perhaps one and the same?) went off on this happening in Springfield, OH. This was based on a story of an American citizen who lives 200 miles away from Springfield having a mental health issue and did kill her neighbor's cat. Worse? Now I have conservative friends and family YouTubing videos of people killing (perhaps torturing) and eating pets. I have no idea who the people in the videos are, but that kind of thing is buttressing this damned horrible racist crap.
While it's nonsense, it got all media to cover it, because it was so crazy. And that was the point. If some people believe it it's a bonus. Now instead of Harris and real issues, they will be talking about immigration and Donald Dump. We seem to still think that lies are negative to the people that say them. That era is long gone and any negative is made up for by the value of getting more coverage and attentions and controlling the conversation. It's what Dump unfortunately does better than anyone. Not to all people but enough when he has no substance. His whole career was selling feelings like all con men do.
Well, as Hillary would have said…….There is a reason Drump loves uneducated people
I can believe that. I spent the summer in Texas with conservative relatives. Worst political decision of my life.
They actually believe that shite. A friend of theirs actually believes the "Forced Transition" story. Another believes the stolen election to this day.
I'm an old white woman and don't find it funny after my initial "what an idiot" reaction. The reason is that it's used to terrorize and de-humanize immigrants. It was a common tactic in Nazi Germany against the Jewish people and anyone who opposed him.
Watch the expression on Harris' face when someone else starts talking. She tunes into them like radar. This is a person who knows how to listen to others and integrate their ideas into her world view if they are deserving of it.
Kamala should call Fox and Friends one morning next week and talk to them about planning the next debate with Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier moderating. Offer to let Trump bring Jesse or Sean in a gimp suit as a service animal for emotional support
Sean in a gimp suit is one hell of an emotional support service animal.
Okay, now that's a visual I really didn't need- but is weirdly hilarious..
Call them on the air!!!

Re: the never looking at Kamala Harris. It was like watching a little kid who just got into trouble at school and is sitting in the principal's office. Couldn't look at her while he was being scolded, and then, when it was his turn to talk, he blamed everyone else and otherwise reached for excuses. Then he left when it was over without acknowledging her and went to the spin room, where he proclaimed it his best debate ever-just like that kid who comes back from the principal's office and brags that he was winning the fight before it was stopped, even though everyone had just seen him getting his ass kicked before the principal broke it up…
NOW Vance vs Walz DEBATE! 🎉🎉🎉
Yeah, watching Vance pretend to be an actual human being next to Walz on stage is standup comedy gold.
Uncanny Valley Vance vs Midwestern Dad.. another extreme contrast
Oh yes! Walz--America's Dad vs Vance--America's Creepy Uncle.
I hope Walz will say how he hopes no elected official in Minnesota would ever do to his state what Vance has done to Ohio. A woman makes a feckless facebook post and people are terrified in their homes because of a giddy senator.
@@escareletYes! He has been speaking about at campaign events.
I loved the awnser they gave to Jon hard question about real people and how you can't see them with the cameras off. That makes a real connection.
Another great episode. Keep it up.
the weekly show podcast really is the best a podcast can be, I can't think of any way to improve it. Great work team.
basically every guest is amazing except for bill o reilly who should've been given the same treatment you gave dick cheney
I grew up in Lee County, FL. The republican governments have corrupted the way people think about democrats, don't accept liberal funding, then cry there's no money for services. I believed Hilary's kill list until I saw a working liberal government. Even living now in Palm Beach County has helped me see liberal practices at work yet barred by gerrymandering.
Also, therapy helps.
Therapy does help allow a person to gain perspective. Usually.
hey greetings from palm beach county. welcome!
Bama here, and yeah, I get that a lot, these people always bitch about how bad like Obamacare is, for example, and like YEAH THE STATE GOVERNMENT WONT ACCEPT THE MONEY, lol. Its so infuriating. I don't understand it, like, just pointing at something and saying BAD and not looking into why exactly it's bad.
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊ø
@@Bella_Rei my mom blamed Obama for traffic resulting from poor city planning during the green new deal era. Yes, Obama gave Lee County the funding but he didn't hire the civil engineer that screwed it up! Lol
"Why can't the candidates have a discussion, trust us with a discussion" -- because the average person's eyes glaze over when you start talking about policy and details. It's not a matter of low intelligence, it's low attention and low interest. The more complicated the message, the more people you lose. That's not just in politics, it's in education, it's in marketing. People don't like complicated. It's why people only read the headline, they want to know "what is it, is that good/bad? Okay done".
In this election cycle Trump called for free universal IVF for everyone which is $100 billion dollars a year minimum of taxpayer dollars in new spending, but he also called for no taxes on overtime, no taxes on tips, or no taxes on social security. So basically what he is calling for is the elimination of budgets and basic math.... and common sense.
He doesn't know what he is even saying because he has never thought about any of these things at all.
Isn't that socialism 😅 is trump a socialist
Trump just says whatever he thinks is popular but he has zero interest in actually doing anything. And 75 million dumbasses swallow it. Even if he says 2 directly opposite things that can't possibly happen they just accept it. It's a cult of gullible.
If you think DJT has "common sense", he must have stolen yours!
DJT will say anything and everything to stay out of prison!
He also said ...
He would release his taxes- NEVER happened!
He would build a great wall on the southern border and Mexico would pay for it-NEVER happened!
He said we are going to spend on infrastructure very BIG- NEVER happened!
"You'll have healthcare like you've never seen"- YEAH, still haven't seen it!
"If I lose to Joe Biden, you'll never see me again- We only wish!
At some point you have to realize it is all BS coming from a felon trying to stay out of jail for his crimes!
NOW that's common sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since when he is normal to begin with
Just name one professor at the Wharton school of finance who supports Trump’s economic plan. Just name one Mr. Donnie Trump.
I want to see what "English professor" likes his "weave" 🤣🤣🤣

It's not that politicians are out of touch with their constituents. The problem is the incentives don't align between the voters and the politicians. It's no coincidence that those representatives that are not already multi-millionaires eventually become multi-millionaires.
How about a few topics on some of the possible solutions out there. 1. The Buffet Rule 2. Down ballot voting 3. What are the goods and bads of term limits 4. What can be do to better define journalism vs. opinion to better inform the citizenry? Does it matter? 5. The new C-span problem (Schrodinger's Congress). Can we change the rules of congress/interaction to actually get to solutions? Maybe a Katie Porter approach to defining the problems of ordinary people? My ideas.
I really hope that at least 10 to 20k or those 400k Taylor Swift voters are in PA!
Me too!!
A lot of girl dads and moms will be badgered and questioned by Swifties who study and know facts
@shellymalone7637 a lot of those girl dads and moms are swifites themselves! She's been writing hit albums for nearly 20 years.
Ban lobbyists from speaking with those in office, ban politicians from becoming lobbyists, ban politicians and their family members from being able to buy and sell individual stocks, and base the pay of politicians on average pay among their constituents. Basically, we need guardrails so that politicians are motivated to improve the lives of their voters as opposed working for corporate interests.
Love this podcast. Thank you!
Ashley I don’t remember ever seeing you smile so unguardedly on your tv appearances. You have a beautiful and contagious smile! Good to see it!
Holy shit, they waged actual psychological warfare on Trump. That is so fucking intense and amazing.
They telegraphed and warned they were doing it on purpose and his team told him straight up, don't take the bait, don't take the bait, be straight-faced, but he couldn't control himself. It's a part of his Antisocial and NPD tendencies.
@@kimyoonmisurnamefirst7061 I'm not just talking about Kamala's baits during the debate, though, but the pre-debate prep they did with billboards, online statements and the like, just to start needling him as early as possible.
It's great!
@@Crazy_Diamond_75 Yeah, they started really early on that.goaded him into a debate. But really easy to to bait Trump to like or hate you because of his NPD/Antisocial issues. But it's extra icing on the cake that they broadcast to Trump's team they were doing it on purpose, and yet he still took the bait.
They were definitely trying to paint him as "likely to be pushed by simple manipulation to make bad decisions, and SO vulnerable to manipulation by the nation's enemies."
Note that she did drop that line into the debate.
I don’t think you really addressed the bigger problem, this country is no longer set up to benefit a middle class. It’s about corporate greed and those are the people “buying” our politicians and driving policy.
And buying your homes. Those homes should be yours!!!!!
42:40 I love the snicker/laughing that overcomes Jon😂. I am really enjoying watching these on UA-cam as I don't have a TV nor a paid subscription to watch regular tv channels/paid channels.
Undecided voters aren't people who don't recognize the difference in candidates, they don't recognize that either will actually change anything for them personally. People are convinced that politics is just a show and that no matter what, they don't have real agency with the choices they're given. They have good reason to feel that way.
they better get informed quick. They are playing with freedom.
Ding ding ding 👍👍
It ain’t gonna matter. Ole mango madness shall take the throne again.
The undecided aren’t lazy quitters, we’re just ahead of the curve
@@masternoob9673oh look the elusive "enlightened" centrist speaks. No, you're an apathetic douche.
@masternoob9673 if we had 100% voter turn out I might accept that argument, but we don't. Not even close. There wouldn't be blue and red states like there are if we got more than 50% voter turn out.
If you aren't voting in local elections, then you are letting someone else decide your community's future without you and ever vote matter for city council or mayor or county commissioner, and those jobs will directly effect you every single day.
Any if you think federal laws don't effect you...I guess you'd have to be paying attention. Assuming you use GPS, check the weather, or have an FDIC insured bank account, those are all thanks to the federal government. And one presidential candidate is talking about throwing out the national weather service. You know, the one that monitors hurricanes and such? That directly impacts anyone who has ever looked at a storm warning anywhere in the world.
Maybe they should implement "Take a politician to work day" or "Spend a day with a constituent day", so they see how people are living.
when your debate trainers are Tulsi Gabbard and Laura Loomer you know trump doesn't care about prep
Don't forget Matt Gaetz.
Tulsi came unglued after, blaming it on ABC instead of her lousy prep.
Man, Tulsi is one weird woman...She endorsed BERNIE in 2016 and Biden as late as 2020, now she's not just a Republican but firmly to the right of them?! Really the poster child for not standing for anything other than power and influence
Kamala had straight up master poker players on her prep team 😂😂😂
More like Chess Grand Masters.
I dozed off shortly during the Trump/Harris debate.
When I woke up, I thought I was watching "A Few Good Men".
What would we do without you? I almost threw up when the debate started, then I was jumping on my couch, saying “Get Some” She nailed it.
To the point about politicians being out of touch with regular folk because they lack time, I think they have the time, its just dedicated to lobbyists and corporate goons.
100%
Especially if they know they can't lose in their districts.
And fundraising. They have to spend so much time fundraising because campaigning is so expensive.
I watched Sarah and Dana Bash a few hours ago. I needed this to come back to reality. My GOd was that. A pitiful play by Bash. Painful to get to the end. she should have stopped at “here’s my book”
I’m glad you’re back !
Trump's post-debate motto was similar to one being used by the military during the Vietnam War - "Declare Victory and get the hell out".
I didn't even finish high school because I joined the military but I caught that nugget about Wharton College and like when Trump Sons were testifying at his civil fraud trial New York they both couldn't find what accepted accounting principles were they both went to that college too and I thought right then that college should disavow any knowledge that Trump or his kids ever attended it
Read his niece's books
She grew up in the same house as Donald
She is now a clinical psychologist. She explains so much about his behavior. Including the answer to your question. Direct and honest about him.
She just brought out another book that is now on the best seller list.
I read one and cannot remember the title. I think it was Too Much and Never Enough.
This is so much fun to watch. I needed this today. Thank you!
Thanks Jon. The conclusion is always the same but I love hearing it. The way to inoculate against demagogues is anticorruption campaigns
I agree 100% with the CSPAN broke congress idea, been thinking that for a while now. I feel the same way about "plays of the week" damaged team sports.

I went on an 8 hour road trip yesterday... why couldn't you have released the episode then? Your podcast schedule should revolve around my personal life.

The eating cats and dogs comment by Trump has harmed Springfield! It isn’t funny or benign.
Springfield was a dying town & they actually needed the 15,000 legal immigrants! And the city is finally not a dying area because of their legal immigration!
Exactly! He's broken the terms of his pre-trial release by making threats that resulted in harm, death threats, bomb threats, and actual violence! He should be remanded to prison! Full stop!
Please speak out if you hear such comments being repeated. It may seem benign but in reality things can escalate, the kkk is already distributing flyers in springfield to scare the immigrants away!

Ashley, a recommendation. Your mic is a Yeti. It is a sideways cardiod mic. If you talk to the side of it that has the volume knob, it will not sound like the audio is reflecting off your table. Just a suggestion.
Best I’ve seen yet!!!!!
In no way would I call trumps base silent. 😂
In his mind, him not looking at her was showing contempt. He was saying she didn't matter enough to warrant his attention. As the debate progressed along with her dominance, he only ended up coming off like a deranged man-baby who was receiving a long overdue dressing down by an adult.
By the time he met her again at the 9/11 memorial, he was forced to not only look at her due to the debate humiliation, he again attempted to show dominance with his weird grab and pull handshake, which again, was highly unsuccessful as she stood her ground. This time, he came off like a creepy, weird old man who was holding on to her hand too long.
The next time he sees her, he will have no choice but to show some respect.
💙Jon... get Senator Whitehouse here to talk about the dark money... 💙
I tend to think people believe in conspiracy theories because they lack community. Isolation and loneliness leads people into desperation.
1) What do you trust more: a salesperson cold calling you about a product or you going to the internet and finding that same product from research?
2) Why do people trust vitamins and supplements they personally find more than prescriptions from doctors?
3) Why do people feel more at ease driving when airline flights are statistically safer?
The role and illusion of control is why conspiracies exist.
@dangerfly yes. People have a hard time acknowledging that accidents happen and things are random.
Sometimes cancer happens, or loss happens, or your kids are on the autism spectrum, or whatever. It's hard to accept the answer "these things just happen and there isn't a clear cause or reason." It's so comforting to hear, "yes, there is a reason, I have all the answers: it's vaccines, it's 5G, it's vitamins, it's something you can control for."
People want answers, they want control, so when they're hurting they will turn to the person who gives them dishonest answers, not the person who gives them an honest "no one knows."
That was a high watermark episode. The written ASMR debate idea was genius.
Jon you have to meet Sarah Longwell who publishes The Bulwark, runs Republicans Voting Against Trump, and The Focus Group. She's been doing focus groups because in 2017 her party backed Trump and she wanted to understand. She's dedicated to understand the voters and she's been doing them ever since. She's awesome.
I hope you have Tim Miller on sometime.
Thanks John!
Corporate profit vs. average worker compensation is the biggest not discussed barely mentioned issue in the debate. Why didnt she mention price gouging?
Great podcast. Enjoy the depth of the interviews and content.
The handshake was a boss move!!
Great conversation, thank you!
When Trump came down the escalator and said Antifa in the wrong context, and started his up is down and down is up talk, I screamed at the Media, why is no one calling him on this ?
I felt and feel the same frustration.
Me too.
I felt the same when he said at his inaugeration, " This carnage stops right here and right now." He gave me shades of Mussolini. And I'm thinking; What carnage? WTF is this guy talking about? Even George Bush said afterward, "Well that was weird."
Because since his escalator dive the media has made billions of dollars pushing this pos into the white house. Then made millions more when they got him in. They are trying to do the same thing now. Trump had 5 minutes more to blab his nonsense because the moderators would not or could not shut him up....even with a button there to turn the asshole's microphone off. Remember murdouche had to pay nearly $800 million and you can't pay for settlements like that if you don't have way more. We, Americans, continue to be sold out and bought by our wealth class with impunity. The media, moguls, news and social, are happy to oblige and set the price.
.... Drama sells ad space...
Excellent show 💙
