My first time getting the lowdown on ankle lock technique. Two stripe white belt here recovering off the mats from an MCL sprain. This is good stuff, coach! Thank you as always.
Go for the toes, that's what most people get wrong. they go below the toes and crank the load bearing metatarsals instead of the flexible phalanges. When you pull down properly from the toes the leverage shoots up the extensor longus and tibialis anterior and that's a world of pain most people aren't ready for. So remember: Attack the distal phalanges for leverage not the load bearing metarsals.
I'm a white belt with an admittedly pretty heavy interest in leg locks. My gym doesn't frequently cover leg locks on account of my class being made entirely of white belts (it's a new gym in an area with zero other BJJ gyms), but I'm preparing for a competition of my own, and this video is genuinely PERFECT for everything I've been looking for. The entrances are awesome, the sweep/entrance from the bottom in particular is something I've been wondering about for ages, and the explanation on how to safely and efficiently apply to submission itself was awesome. Thanks for directing a video quite specifically on white belt ankle locks lol I appreciate this video a ton, and will definitely continue referencing it for practice.
Thanks for the info Coach. I foud myself in the seated position the past few classes and was hoping to learn a leg lock. This video answered all my questions. You're a phenomenal teacher, love watching your content! 🥋👊
Just had a sick leg lock seminar with Sean MCcleary. I learned so much about the straight ankle lock I didn’t know before and I’m super excited to add it to my white belt game.
I've been explaining to students what a reap is for years (centre lines, heel positions, blah blah). A little while back, one of the teenagers said "Ohh so it's like an Omoplata on the leg?". I've been describing it that way ever since 😂
I learned this during one of my earliest classes but have never gotten it. So I’m refreshing my knowledge abir with this thank you. I also plan on using it as a way to pass guard not just finishing a sub. I don’t remember who but someone has said that white belts learning leg locks is bad because then you never learn how to guard pass. But with this you kinda learn both I guess.
Actually my highest % finish right now, most other WBs have fuck all clue of what to do with their legs and they're usually wide open. More experienced players know you can actually push this one really far before risking injury and won't tap, but WBs usually freak out when you get this on. Also I like to hook my inside foot into the back of the guy's knee, it helps with finishing it from some positions.
I'd love to see you show defenses for foot/ankle/leg locks too. As someone who doesn't know them, it's easy to just never use them, but if your opponent uses them... it's not a good idea to not defend.
Leg locks, arm bar, and a choke are something everyone should know. Being able to do those 3 things puts you at an inherent advantage to average men if needed for self defense. Never ceased to amaze me working as a door guy in bars in college how guys with clearly no clue would pick fights with strangers.
1 stripe white belt here. What stops your opponent from just grabbing your ankle and putting you in it? My friend always just grabs my ankle and I’m not as tough
I got so much mileage out of this late white belt early blue belt. Won a tourney with all ankle locks. I’m not a content creator at all or trying to steal views or anything but there’s 2 videos on my channel from the tourney. I learned to really focus on the toes and make their foot “make a fist”
I like your short on it! I love applying the straight ankle, but I haven't ever attempted it on a standing opponent, so your example is actually super useful for me.
Hey chew I need some advice from you, I’m a white belt and in my gym there is this blue belt who thinks he is a trainer or a bjj teacher, he constantly tries teaching you or explaining you every single thing and most of the times I don’t even ask for his advice, it has reached to the point where a purple or even a black belt is helping me with something, and he interrupts them. I don’t like that, is very annoying, it doesn’t let me focus on my drilling or rolling and the issue is that we are kinda pals (I just tolerate him) so I don’t know how to tell him to leave me alone without offending him and me ending up in a leg lock or some shit, thanks :3
Chewy or anyone, I read that having the leg the way you show in the video ("underside") is a rule for white belts and having the leg on the ("Overside") is illegal and a DQ? is that the rule for all Belts? OSS
The right leg, on the hip, is it possible to just bend it as well and use both knees to clamp down on the leg like a single leg takedown while doing the foot lock? I am just asking because i don't want to 'accidently' reap - so i am thinking of using both knees to pinch the leg instead of placing my foot on the hip because during competition, my nerves be flopping everywhere. Is it still just as effective?
I take self defense Jiu-jitsu (No GI) and am 6 hours away from rolling. If I were only to emphasize 1 or 2 things, on the side via open mat or even doing a pop in class somewhere else, to give me an advantage, what should it be?
I've never seen anyone's knee explode from just being reaped outside of an IBJJF competition. It's Jujitsu's equivalent of flopping for the ref in futbal.
Hi Chewie. Quick question for you. I’m in the military so I’m constantly moving around the country which means I can’t train consistently at one gym and build a solid relationship with the instructors. How do you recommend I make the most out of my training and consistently improve while having to switch gyms every few years or even months in my case? Thanks and love the content!

only slightly related, but you should do like ... goofball Adam intros that are only mildly if at all related to the video. like, one time he does jazz hands from up in the rafters or something. and everyone's gonna be thinking "tune in next time to see whereTF Adam is this time".
I’m a white belt, landed this on 3rd degree white belt tonight and he said “please don’t do that, you wouldn’t like it if I did it to you”. Am I missing something here, because I can’t stop thinking about it now or help but wonder I was being a dick for using this?
I think it's just because of how quickly this sub can go sideways. It doesn't hurt until it blows your knee up. By then it's too late. Being a whitebelt you may lack the control or understanding of how close to disaster you could be
Nice one! Making his eyes roll back as he immerses in bliss, it's a mind-blowing experience, I did what I mentioned last week and the look on his face says it all, I learned the exact moves following Jevie Hindlerg’s advice. After go’ogling her latest it all keeps getting crazier!
So I was at a BJJ school that was letting me do leg locks until one day recently meeting today I freaking going to the gym and the owners whom I never met before I used to work with his son let me do leg locks he won't let me do leg locks and meanwhile I'm facing guys that are three times my size and that he's trying to tell me I got to wait till my purple belt that's insane

Exact same here except it's a PCL sprain. Heal up quick bud, see you back on the mats!

Been doing bjj for about a month now have my first tournament in a week. you’re the best👍🏻
Careful with adding new techniques to your game a week out… but good luck! you’ll crush it 💪🏽

Always struggle to get that pinch point on the straight ankle locks, ill keep in mind the Gunshow :)
