Such a gorgeous cover! I can't abide Marvel's tendency to have the standard editions of classic omnibuses use much more modern covers that have nothing to do with the actual runs contained.
It's so ridiculous. The cover should reflect the contents of the book! People that know what the content is about are annoyed by the cover choice and the people that don't know might even feel fooled.
Totally agree. I can't stand any of the standard covers for classic omnis. I'm pretty sure that every single old omnibus I own had the DM cover. Now if we can just get them to do something about those hideous spines..

The collection of episodes seems to be the same than in the Epic Collection Volume 1, no ? I guess this omnibus is at least a paper quality improve and, as a result, a better purchase.
Just finished reading through my copy, and man this is surprisingly good. It’s dated like all Silver Age stories, but once they find their footing with Dr. Strange it’s a lot of fun. Not to mention filled with surprising ideas, the massive Mordo/Dormmamu arc is very inventive for the time. Dr Strange put on the backfoot, forced to flee and hide while Mordo controls the palace of the Ancient One eventually after multiple issues climaxing with a duel with Dormmamu. It’s got plenty of pacing issues, over explained dialogue, Strange’s McGuffin Eye of Aggamoto but it’s fun, and way better then ‘and suddenly they had to fight an alien’ plot points of Marvel’s Silver Age
Loved this run so much. I couldn't agree with you more - the imagination and inventiveness of Ditko in this book really sold this title. And it was the highlight of his artistic output. I love this book.
Eternity is one of the most badass character designs ever for a cosmic character. I do think of Ditko's work on Strange Tales as early psychedelic stuff -- not quite the LSD rage of late 60s to early 70s Kirby, but still a unique & continually evolving style. I think of those two as developing their techniques & unique visual styles in tandem with other changes that happened in comics in the 1960s, changes that were coming about because of _cultural_ as well as technological changes happening at the time 😎 I love that Ditko cover, gonna need to get this reprint just for the cover alone.
I would have to also choose Ditko's Strange over his Spider-man. His Dr. Strange is still the definitive one but even though he created almost every classic Spidey character it was truly Romita Sr. who was for long the definitive Spidey artist
I preordered this and Volume two. I was so sad I missed out on this book at the time but am happy to pick it up. Doctor Strange will forever be my favorite superhero. And I’m happy he’s finally getting the mainstream recognition he deserves.
I have the original copy but I will upgrade to this cover by Steve Ditko I love his Amazing Spider man run which I will get a copy of when it comes out. I will get it in the last month of February along with the Mighty Thor volume 1. I am so happy Marvel reprinted theses classics that I missed. I can't wait to see the review of Dr. Strange Omnibus volume 2. I will get that at the beginning of February.
Why would you not just get someone to make you a dust jacket for like 10 bucks instead of buying a whole new omni ? There are plenty of people who will help out on the Facebook group pages

Today was omnibus day for me for sure . Got two in the mail today one from cgn and one from Amazon . Yeah I’m liking cgn way more . That one came in good shape . I’ll be getting more from them in the future

About time they brought out that Johnny Storm Strange Tales stuff in omni. I know its not meant to be the best, but its a glaring omission in the silver age marvel stuff in omni
I found the Alex Ross version on ebay almost 10 months ago at slightly above cover price here in the UK. Enjoyed them back in the 70's when they being printed in B&W, so last year was the first time I saw it color. It's a great read, although I thought that mordo chasing Strange around the world was a bit long winded. Good review as always. Looking forward to vol 2 review

This was such an enthusiastic and enjoyable review! I could happily get lost within this incredible artwork. Spidey is my guy, but Ditko's work here is a capital-E Experience. I went to your sponsor only to discover it was sold out. :-( Disappointing because that DM version of the cover is phenomenal. My library offers a digital copy of the Masterworks edition through Hoopla (same story content as this omnibus) so I'll have to rely on that in the meantime.
I have this and the volume 2 of the DMs on order from Cheap Graphic Novels. I'm double dipping. I have the DM Masterworks. Keeping them cause the paper stock is thicker and stiffer than the current omnibuses.
Alex Ross certainly is a fantastic artist, & I do love that cover. But the Ditko design is so iconic that I just *need* to get it, don't ask questions, just give me the Ditko DM.

Are they planning on reprinting Vol 1 & 2 of that series? I understand you can still find copies but they tend to be over $300 and hoping new printings will reduce price and have modern binding..... I didn't grow up on Silver Age comics and I am not interested in it either, but I definitely went back to collect the Dr Strange from that era.

The vol 3 is from the late 80's run though which has it's own, separate omnis.
As much as I love that Steve Ditko pinup, I'm fine with my first edition, lol.
