This sounds counterintuitive, but one of the tricks that helped me break my sugar addiction was to eat a baby dill pickle instead of the sugary thing. I have no idea why it works, but it would make the craving go away.

About the sugar! Try upping your intake of protein! It helped me a ton! If i got enough protein during the day, the sugar cravings were low enough that I could have a few pieces of candy and leave the rest,

For me, getting rid of the sugar started with keto/carnivore to help my husband lose weight. For me to sustain it for long term...3 1/2 years now..had to be the "why" of staying away from sugar. In my quest to help my spouse, not only did I get my own weight more in balance, but my bodies response to ridding myself of internal inflammation was completely astounding! I have an extra bone in my foot that causes a lot of pain as well as pain in my wrists from carpel tunnel. When my sugar is in check, my foot pain is minimal and manageable. I used to not even be able to put a fitted sheet on my bed because of the pain in my wrists. It is completely gone! So now, at Christmas for example, I know that if I splurge a bit, I will just have to deal with the pain for a bit. Sometimes it is worth it and sparks joy at special occasions. But, more often than not, my motto is, "Nothing tastes as good as living pain free." Sugar is straight up poison and I am looking at it competely differently as I embark on my 50's and wanting to sustain my health. Good luck, it is definitely an eye opening journey when you look into what we have done to our American health with sugar and foods that don't serve our bodies.

Mystie Winckler has a great book called Simplified Organization that touches on a lot of what's on your "Out" list. I really appreciate her metaphor for productivity, as it relates to your To Do list. Productivity is *not* like a freight train getting you from point A to point B as fast as possible. Productivity is like a fruit tree. Some seasons you rest, put down deeper, larger roots, rejuvenate. Some seasons you produce fruit others can see and enjoy. All seasons are productive, just in different ways.

I have a sugar monster inside me too. I've struggled with it for years. It took getting cancer -- and a "strong suggestion" from an oncology nurse practitioner -- to quit. It causes inflammation and inflammation isn't good for longevity. I think sugar is like alcohol, gambling, etc. It's abstinence that works, not trying to cut down, not trying to avoid certain situations, etc. We have to stop. And that's incredibly hard, because the food industry in this country pumps sugar into almost everything. You still get the dopamine hit. It doesn't give you the same satisfaction that eating candy does, but the sugar monster still feels its effects. It still feeds the addiction. Learning to find foods that don't have processed sugar in them has been a journey, and an expensive one at that. But if it helps me live longer... it's worth the effort.

Angela - Imagine a person who grew up in the foster kid system, being bounced around from one place to the next, never really having a chance to build relationships with anyone who might be able to teach them all those skills, concepts, habits, and techniques that successful parents take the intentional time to teach their children as they're growing up... that person then ages out of the system, goes on to college and lives in the dorms because that's the best option for a roof over their head, but they're so far behind that they do their best to catch up, but they don't know what they don't know so they don't know the right questions to ask and the right places to look for help. They then graduate and get into their 30's and 40's and still feel so far behind because they just never got those foundational life lessons that so many other kids grow up getting, let alone, the life lessons many learn in college because they were set up so well for success by their parents before they even got there... so they're still behind and still struggling. THAT is me - and THAT is thousands of other people, believe it or not. What I would give to see you put together a complete video series that really digs in deep, starts with the basics, and then works its way up to learning how successful adults set themselves up for a well prepared and prosperous life. What are the habits they do each day? How do they organize they life and themself too? What do successful people know about money that poor people don't seem to get? What are those things successful people do differently that set them apart? I think you get where I'm going... I would sure love to see you do a full complete video series on basically, how to adult and how to adult successfully - there are so many more people out there who need this just as much as I do. I'm just the only one saying it. Any chance you'd be willing to do something of that nature? I'd sure be grateful if you did. (I need a step by step kind of game plan... I missed it all growing up.)

You hit home on a lot of thoughts I have shared with my husband in recent weeks… isolation and sugar intake being highlights. I love the peace that comes with the isolation but crave connection, so finding that balance. And my sugar cravings have grown into a problem through the holidays, I recently started making treats bowls with yogurt, honey, sweet and tangy fruits, snacking on dates, and dark chocolate to trying to ween down. It’s crazy how much of a process it really is to quit. It just became a bonding thing for my husband and I to watch lost and have a treat and it’s spiraled into the problem it is today. Please keep us updated on your journey, I’ll be in it with you 🫶🏽

I have a really bad sugar addiction, and I also love candy too. It is so hard to quit.( And I resent others who then question me when I ask for something sweet, lol. ) Honestly what helped me the most was to follow and be very strict on the carnivore diet. Can't recommend it enough. I lost weight, my A1C and glucose levels went down, my joints hurt less, and I didn't crave sugar! You might check into that - after the first week or two, it was actually pretty easy to say no to carbs. The past 6 months I've cheated and not been as strict, and my sugar cravings came back. So I'm back on the carnivore wagon.

This entire video describes me. All of these goals take work, but the biggest thing that resonted with me is the sugar addiction. It's REAL! Because it truly (with brain scans and science/medicine behind this) is more addictive than hard core drugs, you just have to cold turkey stop. The withdrawal is hard and very uncomfortable but after a few days the physical part gets better. Then the mental and emotional part kicks in. Go to your source of strength. I have been going through "The 40 day Sugar Fast" by Wendy Speake and it helps so much. Game changer!! And now I've preached long enough. Sorry about that. I will be saving this video for replay/reference during my adjusting phase as I also will be incorporating many of these changes. Thanks for the putting in the time to make this video for us!

I totally understand about the to do list. I finally got more of a control over it than I did last year. When it comes to going to sleep earlier I am now doing that even though I am not staying asleep all through the night. I am always the early riser even though I don't like getting up early but it has been implanted in me ever since I start working at an early age. Sleep was something that I always needed more of ever since I was a child until now and my body really feels it. I am a chocoholic and I have learned ways to control that. For some reason I cannot tolerate candies, my body would itch a lot and I would break out, But I used to eat a lot of chocolate before it starts to affect me, so knowing that, I have cut back a whole lot on chocolate everything. I can actually go into the stores and walk past it very fast and I'm OK. I would often feel like I have to have some chocolate in the night before bed, but because I don't have any in the house eventually the feeling goes away and I'm good. I'm always glad for these type of videos, Angela. It lets me know that I am not the only one thinking of certain things or being affected by certain things, therefore I am normal. 😀💖💖
    Happy new year to you!🎉

This thinking has translated to my personal life. Second, sugar, I realized I am an addict to it, if I don't have it I am fine. I watch everything and allow myself 1 sugar free treat a day(cause that's not good for you either) or the flavored teas. Good luck, it is very hard, I found it takes me about 3-4 weeks to detox.

I have found that you need to have a real talk with everyone in your life to be more serious about what you want to change. Once they see you really do want to stop the sugar, they will be more supportive. There are many reports that are showing added sugar or sugary sweets(candy), which really is horrible for our bodies. Sugar is truly addicting! it isn't like an addiction, it is one. I found out how much sugar was bothering me when I fell pregnant and couldn't drink energy drinks from my local shop with added flavors etc (my guilty pleasure for a caffeine boost). After 9 months I went to have one and was overwhelmed by how intensely sweet it was and couldn't believe that I drank them before. I thought about them so much just out of habit and tiredness. Crazy how addictive it is and how our bodies get used to it over time and don't notice the flavor as much.

I had a BAD M&M addiction. LIke a coffee cup full daily. I needed to quit my candy, too. What helped was chewing airheads sugar free gum tasts sugary and yet isn't, and makes my brain think I am having sugar) and also brushing my teeth every time I started craving candy. It has really helped so much.

I agree with the high expectations one. I recently moved in with my partner and whenever it annoys me that he has left a plate in the livingroon after eating and it's been two days already, I remind myself that there has been times in my life that I've done that too.
I also feel embarrassed to admit how much sugar I eat. Especially during the holidays, you'd think one person could not eat that many boxes.. well, wasn't that difficult. I buy a bag of something and keep eating even when the point comes you're full and not really enjoying it anymore but you know, gotta eat the whole bag, and that's the issue. I'm also worried for my health in long-term.

Comment for the algorhtm! I am into the brand smart sweets, or just chewing gum for the candy graving, but it's hard... Also trying to eat (sour or sweet) fruit first.

Thank you for sharing. This really resonated with me. I love the concept of, "eat the frog" and that does work really well for some things. I do notice that a lot of people with ADHD for example, have to sometimes do the opposite and get the dopamine hits for the small wins first & build momentum. So you just have to know yourself. I struggle with the exact same thing as you though and I thought this year maybe I will just schedule an actual time during the day to accomplish those awful little things I just don't want to do. The struggle is real! 😊

When i was in grad school i read a research paper that basically concluded sugar is more addictive to mice than nicotine or heroin. I wish there was research on what is most helpful in quitting sugar! One thing i like to eat when im craving sugar is a medjool date filled with peanut butter and a few chocolate chips on top. Very aweet, hits the spot for me aometimes, but isnt candy.

Angie - Sugar is a Monster. However, the candy you describe has HFCS in it, and FOOD COLORING. THOSE ARE ADDICTIVE and that is why you crave them. It is hard, but if you buy small packages from the DT and tell yourself that it is 1 piece a day, you could back it off and then quit. Tell your family what you are doing so they can help you beat this "addiction".
Also switch to mint - spearmint, winter fresh, peppermint, or menthol cough drops can give you the "tangy" sensation you crave, then brush your teeth with a mint toothpaste. It matches the flavoring and stays in your mouth for a while.

I call those simple tasks "micro anxieties". Make a list of the micro anxieties that you need to get done and set aside a planned hour to get them done each week. I keep a running list of these micro tasks on my phone.

Love you Angela! 🥰 Have you considered getting a glucose monitor that allows you to track your glucose spikes? Look up the “glucose goddess” who is a scientist that teaches “hacks” to help people manage intense dips and spikes in glucose. I feel like this would be so educational and truly getting to the root of WHY you crave sugar so strongly.

I'm AuDHD and need sugar to function for a variety of reasons, but I cut down the quantity of it, like having a small piece or two of candy instead of cookies. I would encourage anyone with neurodiversity to research why NDs crave sugar for themselves.
Also, here's a great (unfortunately) tried and tested trick: Eating something super sour like a Warhead when you are having a meltdown or other very strong emotion (possibly even panic attacks) actually interrupts your brain/spiraling and gives it a chance to reset in a way and helps stop the meltdown. Some people use ice or drink water but those never helped me.

What I’m NOT doing… is buying to buy anymore. I’m really, really, really OVER the consumerism and constant consumption!! The constant need to buy and collect and get stuff because I’m influenced or it’s trending or it’s a holiday. We are stopping - in fact we stopped a few months a go. Our teens asked us to just stop! THEY are WORRIED ABOUT THEIR FUTURE PLANET 😢😢😢 And, we respect that! So, less consuming ‘stuff’ and more experiences instead. We are off to enjoy life vs minting crap! ❤❤❤

I am a sugar addict as well. I can say “no thank you” to a glass of wine that someone pours for me. But I cannot resist sweets if they are around. I even have a hard time walking by them at the grocery store. Ready to eat Cookie dough is the worst for me-so convenient to grab as a treat 😭 My daughter loves to bake and loves to “treat me” to baked goods. Well, I woke up with a migraine this morning because of cookie dough with my daughter yesterday! It’s so bad. I’m going to look into the breath strip thing that you mentioned. Thank you and hope you get your sugar monster under control 😕

Same same with sugar but not with candy…not sure this would work but what I focused on is only natural sugar so none of those less sugar things they ALL are addictive. I’ll have dates or Lara bars…did that for 30 days and cravings went away ….ill also eat frozen blueberries….etc

Angie, I'm new to your channel. I think this is the 2nd video I've watched & subscribed after the first. That NEVER happens. I related to every single word you spoke. But, the sugar monster, omg. I'm 5'4 & 112 pounds, have been since high school...long ass time ago (I'm aloud to say ass;*). So, I try to justify with the fact that I can eat a whole cake and not gain a pound. To be clear, I don't eat a whole cake. I actually have more willpower than most...everything in moderation. But, I've never had children, I think that helps, with the weight.
You are so refreshingly honest; rarity. Sadly, I don't know the last time I laughed out loud, but that last comment - about sitting in an old fart home rocking a bb doll....😂❤

I feel your sugar addiction. I’m the same. I don’t eat desserts but I love candy, gummy bears, sour patch kids, etc. the only way I found to get over it is to not have it in the house. You will be mean and grouchy for a while but the craving will go away. It’s my stress food. Every time I’m stressed I want candy. I told my husband not to buy any for me even if I call or text. I get angry but I do thank him for not getting it. It has some negative effects on me. It causes so much inflammation in my body. Bad for my arthritis. You can kick this addiction to the curb. You need to work on your emotions. Check out fellow UA-camr Therapy in a Nutshell. She is fabulous just like you!
