Growing up I was homeschooled, I lived in a neighborhood with no other kids, far from any playgrounds or hangouts where I could meet anyone my age. Never visited a friend’s house, never went to a birthday party, never called anyone to chat. I got to know the ups and downs of loneliness very well.
You’d think this kind of childhood would make me do anything I could now as an adult to never be alone again. Strangely, it’s the opposite. I guess all that time alone taught me the value of solitude, because I can’t imagine tying my life to other people’s thoughts and expectations. Being “alone” to me means having freedom.
I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to fly - a couple of unfortunate incidents mean I’m terrified to get behind the wheel of a car - but I hope I can find a way to overcome my fears and learn how to fly anyway. I’ve become a little obsessed with planes lately, and this looks like heaven on earth (or slightly above earth I suppose).
Thank you for sharing this beautiful video!

Thanks for sharing, and while I understand flying can be unnerving - maybe consider taking a discovery flight with an instructor nearby if you're up for it! Knowledge and experience help with the anxiety of it all for sure! Best!

Lovely. Was it Oscar Wilde who said a “bore deprives you of solitude without offering companionship?” Thanks for sharing this peaceful solitude with us.

I like how much I can hear the engine and the adjustments you make when you're on final. It makes me feel the sense of "being attuned with the airplane" that you mentioned in the narrative.
Also, your landings remind me that I need to get some more pattern work in. My landings have been getting sloppy.
One thing I've found is that I really don't talk to myself. I voice all my checklists, but I really don't voice anything else. And it actually surprises me that I don't. There are situations in the airplane that playout in my head as if it's a conversation, but there's no record of it on the video. It bothers me a little bit because some of those conversations were pretty good and I want them recorded so that I can remember the nuances.

The coloring that you've chosen in this video is interesting. It's almost monochrome. When you're focused is that how the world seems to you?

wrote this in my comment, moving it to a reply: I've gotten used to talking through things in the plane, though I notice I'm not the best at doing it consistently.
Normally (WFH) I can get through almost a full day without talking.

Thanks man! Glad you picked up on the intentional engine sound level. It helps me review my actions/reactions to various approaches, and how smoothly and timely I am or not with the moments before landing.
Yeah I talk to myself as if there is a DPE there usually. I have found that talking through my final approach helps passengers feel more comfortable too. I do think it helps me with general mindfulness. Talk it out next time you are doing pattern work and let me know how it goes!

great musing, of course. Those solo times have always been when my brain works things out. Flying was difficult because I had to spend an hour or two in a small space with someone who isn't chosen family. And I'm feral enough that the radio work has been extra stress.
The talking isn't the point though, it's the 57 minutes of the hour with no other voices or demands. On the outside I'm working on flying, but that extra brainpower is just chewing away on something else.
14:00 love those northerly approaches to Tune. I didn't know how integral the Cumberland River (and water in general) was to the geography of Nashville.

thank you - yes it is nice to find ways to slow things down, and create space whereas otherwise you would be talking.... and yeah the river is central here - it's fun to follow it out of town.
