Low Wing vs. High Wing - the PC vs. Mac of aviation

  • Everyone has an opinion. The older I get, the less I feel comfortable in certainty however. I always question myself when I feel I have a line on anything. I try to leave the door open, or at least, view it through a more complete view with assumed malleability.
Binary thinking is the death of creativity and humanity. Nuance is a pastime now. Something you can’t squeeze into reels, shorts, tiktoks…
So yes in general aviation one of the most pervasive and constant arguments that everyone likes to have an opinion on… is high wing vs. low wing.

One thing I hate about the 172, is turning base to final. Once you enter the turn, you don’t see the runway until you are rolling out of the turn it seems. I love the looks of low wings and the visibility they offer. Hope I get the opportunity to fly in a low wing sometime.

@zach9373, I fly a 182, and I agree with what you are saying, but, it is just something you get used to. I've flown a piper warrior once, and I didn't like not being able to see the ground in level flight. I would imagine if a bonanza appeared in my tie down spot one day...I would get used to not seeing the ground.

If you crane your neck forward a bit you actually can see the runway, in particular if you do the turn a bit wider.
I‘ve never lost sight of the runway in the final turn, not with the 172, nor with my Stinson.

Just like a low wing blocks visual to final approach path (NORDO straight-ins) while turning base to final. Pro tip: Lean forward in a 172 and look ahead/above the wing in a turn and you see everything. If you can't do that for the 5-10 seconds it takes to turn, that runway isn't going anywhere, it'll be right where you saw it.

Sorting fact from fiction in our minds - love it, we tell ourselves narratives as a shortcut to actually rethinking everything all the time, but often we need to go back and make honest, open-minded assessments.

I would like to debate a lot of what you have stated, but I can't...simply because you are right. I love my high wing...cause I don't own a low wing. I love my ford, cause I don't own a chevy. Maybe when the lottery dollars finally come in...I can truly have this debate with myself. Another great video Brian.

This was great, thanks. I’m pretty limited to flying Cessna 172’s but I had a chance last year to fly from Nashville to St. Louis and back in a Diamond DA40 - now there’s a low wing I could really get behind!

Great video, Brian! Obviously, I choose the high wing at this point, but I sure do love flying a Piper or a Grumman. You are spot on about the differences. You do feel more like you're "flying" a low wing.

How did I come here with high wing vs low wing questions and leave with distinct existentialism and questions about my existence in a tribal society.

On a Base to Final turn I want to see the traffic on a Straight in Final. Can you image what the insurance companies and the DOT would say about
a four passenger car with one door. And don't forget the advantage of high wing airplanes on rainy days or camping. I fly both, but prefer high wing Cessnas,
    Pipers, Stinsons and many others.

    • @BrianSiskind

Yeah at the end there I did mention "talk to me when it's 100 degrees"... I love the shade of a high wing in summer.

Do you think that the high vs low wing debate is anything other than good natured ribbing at each other? That's how I personally treat it.
But from my perspective - even as someone who owns a low-wing - I don't care in any serious sense. Each has it's pros and cons, and as someone who wants to use aviation as part of my retirement, I'm sure that a high-wing is in my future. Being able to get in and out much more easily is something that's going to become important to me as my wife & I get older. Our joints are likely to start to complaining more about entering and existing my current airplane.
So it's always been just a question of which set of properties work for me at a given time. And one of the properties that worked for me when I bought my airplane was that a 150hp piper cherokee was a lot less expensive than any 150hp Cessna 172 I could find.
Do you really think that this debate is divisive?
OTOH, vi vs emacs. vi all day. IYKYK.

Just sold my low wing. I trained and have flown low wings for 30 years but now, anything over a 90 minute flight and my tired bones have a tough time getting out of the low wing. That really takes the enjoyment of the flight away for me. I’m in the market for a high wing for that reason only. KAPF
