  • As many of you have so kindly notices I have slimmed down over the last few months and many of you have asked what I have been doing different in order to lose weight.
    So I decided I needed to make a change so that I could continue to keep up with my son and really enjoy exploring the world with him.
    When I started this journey I wanted to keep things simple much like in the garden. I try to achieve my motto every day and that is to “move more and eat less.”

    I have noticed the change in your face, you look much younger now. Since my journey with heart failure. My doctor said to get a dog, so that I will get out and walk. Also he has told me to start a garden. With these two simple things, and change in diet. I have lost 35lbs. So I thank you. 😊

    I think I stumbled on this at the same time too roughly. I skip the gym now and just stay in the garden longer and set goals of tasks rather than a distance jogged. Gameification with fitness trackers is awesome too.

    you can really notice the difference in your glow too. it maybe due to your son though, not the garden. the garden helps but children are the best way to live healthier and happier lives. I'm not a father but my life was twice as good when my brother first found out he will be a dad. I live in Newfoundland and your site is the closest to our weather out there so you helped me out a lot in my garden. thank you very much.

    You are a lot lighter now than in your older uploads for sure, good for you. I can tell you from personal experience that you can't out exercise a bad diet. This winter I lost 27 lbs in 12 weeks and the only change I made was no beer for that time. If I would have exercised as well probably a 40-50 lbs would not have been unreasonable to lose.

    It's not only about eating less, but about what you eat. Cutting down on meat, dairy and eggs helps, along with cutting out processed foods. Eating a mostly plant based, whole foods diet will go a long way. Good luck!

    Well done, Stephen! It's a journey but worth it. As someone with overweight parents, i know how important that is for children. For that reason, i was always too concerned with my weight. Not consciously but resulting in 20 years of borderline anorexia. I would die before ending up overweight and i nearly did. I still remember the night when the thought crossed my mind, that if i would close my eyes now and not plunder the fridge, i would not open them again. That was the day i changed for good. The last 3 years have been a fight to stabilize my eating patern and now i'm slowly building up muscle mass. The garden helped in so many ways. Good food, good exersize, plenty of sunlight, all good. I actually got a bit overweight in the process but i stabilized it within a year. It will always be a fight and fallbacks are just a part of the deal. Getting back in the saddle is the only option, Stephen. I admire your iron will and cheer you on, garden friend!

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  7 років тому +2

      Thank you for sharing your story my friend. It certainly is not easy as I am well aware.
      One must have an iron will to stay healthy. As you mentioned it can go either way pretty quickly. That said the garden helps both cases and that is the wonderful healing part of being a gardener !

    Smaller goals are always the way to go, it's far easier to get those initial successful wins and thus the motivation to build on those successes. and yes, exercise more, eat a bit less and substitute for better quality food (home grown etc) seems a balanced winning and sustainable formula... too many people try going cold turkey and reducing their food intake by 50% and then fail.

    • @numbereight886
      @numbereight886 7 років тому +2

      btw: I've grown tomatoes this year for the first time ever, and I'm very surprised at how 'tomato' tasting they are (50% more than shop bought) and far more sweeter (seriously it's almost candy like). Needless to say I'm building a good repository of seeds for next year etc.

    Steven, I'm glad you're attaining success and there was a lot of great advice in your video (like goals, looking forward, move more in regular activities, and it's about what you eat...not how much you exercise.)
    I have one beef with the advice resulting in not following the recommendation for tracking calories. While reduced calories will undoubdetdly end up with reduced weight, calories in / calories out is a fallacy that induces failure in many who try. A better eating strategy is one that involves reducing carbohydrate intake and increasing healthy fats (either directly, or indirectly through fiber in the gut). The science involves a model that acknowledges hormonal (insulin, ghrelin, and microbial inputs) rather than biochemical potential (or, Calorie) in energy flow.
    I like Peter Attia's blogging on the subject as he, like you in gardening, spends a great deal of time understanding and quantifying seemingly logical advice...like Calories in / Calories out (and, happens to also have a great deal of research in impact to cardiovascular health).

      You are right as I mentioned at the end of the video this is a method that has been working for me but some or all of the components may not work for others.

      After studying the issue for the past few years I believe we (humans) all have the same basic biology and that is we thrive on carbohydrates. Ingested fat is easily stored on the body and highest in calories. But it's hard for people to "give up" the foods they ate from childhood as they see it as a sacrifice, etc even though the foods I eat are super tasty (pizza, pasta, waffles, burgers, burritos, pancakes, etc). If you study nutrition like you have gardening (the scientific method) you will discover all the harms of cholesterol, saturated fat, oil (omega 6), etc. The added bonus is you don't need to exercise much as the caloric intake is naturally lower than the higher fat foods. Either way all the best!

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  7 років тому +1

      The only issue I have with nutritional research is the bias that is in the subject is massive and the subject has far wider variability in the stats. That said it is all about finding what works for you and is healthy. I keep with a varied diet and move more ;)

    I've lost over 12 pounds gardening this summer. Gardening is a great weight to loose weight. And, eating clean & healthy is very important. I'll probably get a gym membership during the winter months when I have a tendency to put the weight back on. I use MyFitnessPal to track what I eat. It very handy to know what I am consuming & what I should not be consuming.

    Drink plenty of water, eat clean, and do something. The something can be any activity like swimming, walking, lifting weights. Whatever you enjoy doing most. In fact, just drinking the proper amount of water per day will have an effect. You can eat as much as you like, as long as it's clean, unprocessed food. Last part? Do something, it's really that simple.

    I think more weight loss and health oriented videos are a great idea Stephen. I need to shed around 30-35 lbs myself. I am a house painter, and often climb hundreds of steps per day on ladders up to 40ft in height, but it doesnt keep me at a healthy weight. My 4 pint per day beer habit seems to counteract any benefits i get from my exercise at work lol.Seriously, i do need to get more steady cardio like walking and biking, and get my caloric intake in check. Being overweight just drains the energy right out of me

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden

    I have a weakness for sugary drinks like soda, gatorade and even fruit juices. But they make me gain weight. When I stop drinking them, I easily lose 5 lbs a month doing nothing but removing these drinks from my diet. You may be thinking, "well why fruit juice, if no sugar is added, it should be fine". My theory is that the natural sugar in fruit was not meant to be drunk in vast amounts. It was made to be released with the fiber of the fruit. The juicing craze, IMHO, is a dangerous craze. Just eat the fruits and vegetables, do not alter them. However, it is also possible that juice made from concentrate is also bad. It's hard to say.

    How much weigh have you lost Stephen and over what time. Gyms are boring as hell, I always say to my neighbour, If you got a garden why do you need a gym. Because in the garden you can dig, lift, stretch, bend, and pull many times over. For example my garage is around 200m from my back garden, but I need to store my Garden compost there and then carry it up a 10% gradient over three flights of steps. These are not small bags but 75litre bags (weighing 23 kg) uphill is such a great exercise. Doing this and walking more, since February I have lost 12kg of weight and feel much fitter. It is a good idea ditching the car, as car equals weight put on. You are right what you put in your month also controls weights, so ditch the beer, ditch the cake and biscuits, and reduce the amount of pasta you eat. I have discovered that eating more pearl barley and buckwheat and rice instead of pasta really does reduce your weight. I also changed to eating lean meat so I eat more chicken, turkey and lean pork and Beef and hardly no red meat. I also started eating more mackerel as it is such a cheap fish. Hope you diet works and you reach your ideally weight?PS I do not calorie count at all. See it this way if you eat what you want and you are still loosing weight. then you are doing something right, so why count?

Perhaps naively I am assuming chemical analysis of trace minerals shouldn't be any different to the soil analysis tests....

    Greetings, Steven. Do you have any advice on how to get tomatoes ripe earlier? We had frost warnings in early June and I couldn't get plants in ground until June11(zone3). My plants did great and have a ridiculous amount of fruit but it would be nice to get it before sept.Is there anything I can do to get ripe fruit earlier?

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  7 років тому

      Right now especially with my larger tomatoes I just have to wait and see. I pull them in as they begin to blush but usually end up in a mad rush to harvest what I can one evening before our first frost.
      There is no way to force them to ripen so just keep an eye on the weather network!
