  • Does chlorine in tap water harm beneficial microbes and bacteria in my garden soil?
    Will the bacteria recover quickly?
    How much chlorine is in tap or city water?
    Should I remove chlorine from my tap, drinking or city water?

    I have noticed over the years that people recommend watering the garden with water that does not have chlorine in it such as Tap water. The premise of this statement is the bacteria I your soil are a key player in the nutrient cycle and chlorine kills bacteria.
    So today I thought today I would test this garden assumption.
    The water treatment plant that provides my drinking water has been recognized as using the gold standard for water treatment. After getting the water from the North Saskatchewan River it is initially shocked with Sodium hypochlorite or bleach. This does a great job at killing bacteria and other pathogens that may be in the water. The downside to using bleach is the chlorine decays rather fast once in contact with the water and air.
    In order to keep the water safe while shipping ammonia is added to the water creating chloramine. This essentially stabilizes the clean water until it gets to you to make sure it is safe for you to drink.
    It is really important to note that even at the highest levels the chemicals used to sterilize and stabilize the drinking water here in Alberta are several orders of magnitude below what is considered to be mildly irritating to humans.

      On the impact on beneficial microorganisms yes. About the assumption that a minimum level of these chemicals in potable water does not harm human; this is an opinion based on old science knowledge paradigm although many studies start to show that repetitive adsorption of negligeable harmful chemical add up and cause structural diseases.

      I believe that collecting rainwater for the garden from your home or other buildings would remedy any chance of chlorine, heavy metal or ammonia contamination and microzoa harm. Was your chlorine sampling in the tap water free or total chlorine? the difference between 2.0 and 1.3 is significant in my eyes as 2.0 is over 50% higher than 1.3. The proof though, is in the bacteria and other microzoa counts in the samples. On the flip side, I have seen some hydroponic gardeners use a bit of chlorine bleach (household 5.25 - 6%) to "clean up" dark roots on, say strawberry plants. To me, if the dark roots deliver plenty of berries, turning them white with bleach is purely aesthetic. I think about some of this from an aquarium perspective. would I place anything as toxic as chlorine in any of my aquariums? NO. The same types of bacteria that feed the plants with the fish waste in the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate cycle also convert minerals to plant food in the soil. I place tap water in a 5 gallon bucket at least overnight before adding it to any aquarium or I use DI water. In the tropical fresh water systems that I use, the plants grow vigorously and have to be thinned on occasion. there are so many cycles of nutrients through the microzoa in the soil and water, that I think it is prudent to maintain non-toxic inputs to their environment. Great video and very descriptive! Thanks.

      The analysis represented total Cl in the water.
      I have had a few comments about the impact of Cl on fungi and look forward to investigating. I do rely primarily on rain water in barrel and free falling. That said i am less worried when I have to use Tap water.

      1mtstewart Steve said his water is treated with Chloramine which is not the same a Chlorine. Chloramine is not as effective as Chlorine as a disinfectant. Chloramine also does not volatilize from the water like Chlorine does. Our local city water is treated with Chlorine, if I use it during dry periods because my rain water supply is depleted, I collect it buckets and let it sit in the sun at least overnight. It would be interesting to see the test done with straight chlorinated water out of the tap instead of Chloramined water out of the tap.

  • @ayatti26
    @ayatti26 9 років тому +3

    I have often pondered that theory of chlorinated water harming garden ecosystems, but considering that we drink the water, that in itself should say that it is not harmful at the point where it is dispensed from our homes. At the treatment plants as you stated they are hit with a high dose, and that kills them, but it doesn't linger and there is no need for it to linger in huge quantifies. Case and point, swimming pools have to be constantly and heavily chlorinated because its potency and effectiveness wears off over the course of a few days. If one application is missed, then the algae will immediately start growing. Great scientific research and rock solid data.

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  9 років тому

      ayatti26 I had thought the same. The levels in pools are so much higher than these results its would seem rather straight forward. That said there are products out there that perpetuate the myth in order to sell products. That said more research is required as always in science ;)

    Have you done a study like this on soil fungus as well? One of the other things you may want to test is the presence of heavy metals in the town water, as the chemicals added in treatment make the water slightly acidic and this leaches off metals from the piping as it travels to your residence. I'm currently trialling the use of caravan water filters to see is this improves the health of my garden plants.

    Excellent video Stephen! Luckly I don't have to worry about chlorine because the water comes straight from a spring 100ftaway and is naturally filtered with peat and moss. It then goes through a UV light to kill any microbes on the spot so no long term effects :)

    Stephen
    I am somewhat of a simpleton when it comes to analytical tests. However you do a great job of posting results. I am grateful you are doing all these tests. I am arriving at the conclusion what I have done is good enough. You are proving soil amendments are primarily an extra cost and the added benefit can be marginal.
    What I have done is what you and Patrick recommend. That is free and local resources. This I have primarily done, by using wood chip mulch, which I admit, I did not apply perfectly, that is inches and with green leaves, I over did the inches and leaves were non existent in much of it. I also use compost primarily of leaves vegetable scraps and coffee grounds. This process is slow but what the heck, it does not cost much. The wood chips truly keep me from having to water, keeps the weeds down, and will eventually make a rich cover for the soil.
    Thanks for helping me evaluate what is happening here because you do it there.
    Steve

      nathan richardson flouride is a neurotoxin and a by product of the phosphate fertiliser industry. In my opinion there is not enough evidence to support that flouride is ever beneficial for our teeth but there is evidence that it calcifies your pineal gland.
      You know what does whiten teeth, is anti bacerial, fungal and viral? Coconut oil. Need an abrasive? baking soda. missing out on that fresh breath? peppermint or mint essential oil which also kills anaerobic bacteria.
      Best thing about it? No need to go get medical assistance if your child has swallowed a load of toothpaste. They can keep the toxins.

    Thank you for this. I’m not convinced that a plate count technique was the appropriate testing method for measuring this. Soil analysis using a shadowing microscope would allow for counting the number of ALL beneficial microbes, not just bacteria. Bacteria are the bottom of the food chain in the soils food web world. Without the fungi, Protozoa, beneficial nematodes, microarthropods and macroarthropods, the nutrient cycling for plants (the poop loop) wouldn’t exist. If a soil is simply full of bacteria (which it often is) and nothing else, it’s not a healthy soil.
    If you take fully complete compost that is complete with ALL the microbes needed for healthy plants and soil and analyze a sample using bottled water and then analyze a sample using city water-using a shadowing microscope-I suspect one may observe beneficial microbes struggling to survive.

    Very interesting!
    I never really thought tap water was killing bacteria in the soil, because it just didn't make sense based on my observations.
    My anecdotal experience is that tap water will keep my plants alive, but they won't do any growing, and they certainly don't thrive or put out new fruit. I have a theory that my tap water is either mildly stressing the plant, or somehow interfering with the absorption of nutrients. But the change happens way too quickly for it to be something to do with the bacteria in the soil.
    Lately, my rain barrels have been permanently empty and it's been extremely hot, so I've been watering with tap water. Yesterday I tried treating the water to remove any chlorine or chloramine that it might contain, and the garden sprang to life overnight! Suddenly there were flowers blossoming, new growth, fruit returned to growing, etc...
    This is anecdotal, so obviously it could be confirmation bias. But it seems like every time the garden gets watered with something other than tap water, it has an explosion of growth, and it doesn't cost much to treat the tap water before I use it. So I'll continue to treat the water. :)

    in water deposit fed irrigation systems, (such as BLUMAT) the water temperature gets a problem in hot summer due to its lower O2 saturation values in higher temperatures as you can see from aquarium tables. water poor in oxygen takes O2 from the soil & roots worstening their conditions. i'll cover the deposits by ivy & blackberry plants etc. for shadowing them.

    Well thought out testing. Don't know about Canada but in the States different areas evidently use different levels of Chlorine. I lived in a few places that the chlorine smell of the water was so strong I couldn't stand to drink it. Would be interesting to see testing from those places.

      ***** It really would be interesting however the hold time on these samples are so short someone has to be there and have a lab available.
      I have smelt the same a few times but that is usually after a boil water advisory and they have to purge the lines. They do tell everyone to run the water for an hour in every tap kind of thing. by the end the water is gone.

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  8 років тому

      I am glad it helps. Turns out this week a group of scientists figured out how to count the bacteria in tap water with out culturing. They found 8000 per ml. This is not to worry as all of them are good or neutral.
      So if the tap water has some it should be no surprise the same water does not kill them in our garden !

    • @karlInSanDiego
      @karlInSanDiego 7 років тому +1

      That means the tap water was potentially the additive factor as shown by your numbers, right? Seems like another control you'd need to perform is to plate the tap water alone, and you'd likely see similar numbers. I'm afraid this new info blows up the use of plating to test soil bacteria disruption. I agree with the earlier concern that bacteria type and diversity is ignored, so this isn't a valid test. Reading about chlorination, it often inactivates and doesn't actually kill bacteria. This is why we it must be constantly present in the tap water, and why they don't just try to treat and then remove the chlorine at the time of treatment.
      Also, another factor may be that given that chlorine acts as an inactivator as well as a killing microbes (this experiment ignored the rest of the food web including protozoa, nematodes, microarthropods, and fungi to name a few) chlorine could potentially disrupt the balance that healthy soil strikes in the constant struggle of aerobic vs. anaerobic, predator vs. prey, etc.
      I really appreciate that you took the time to do this experiment. The world needs more, careful examination of how we use chemicals to protect and possibly harm ourselves and the other life in our ecosystem. Farmers have been doing it wrong for decades, wiping out their soil biology with conventional till, synthetic fertilizing, and systemic pesticides and herbicides.

    • @1caramarie
      @1caramarie 7 років тому

      Well, karlin, how about you do all those tests and then you can tell us your results. He is doing specific test to verify specific claims not testing for every single variable. Let me quote you "this experiment ignored the rest of the food web including protozoa, nematodes, microarthropods, and fungi to name a few", are you aware that those (plus the others not named by you) add up into the hundreds of thousands if not the millions. Nice way to show us how many microorganisms you can name. I hope you have more than a few millions of dollars to pay for all those tests.

  • @noeffinway417

    @Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable Many gardeners remove chlorine for a different reason than what was stated. I was taught that filtering out as many adulterants as possible (including chlorine) will lower the PPM and allow higher nutrient absorption. If the PPM is too high because of the presence of chlorine and minerals, it does not matter how much nutrients are added or available once the water itself has reached saturation ppm levels. Please let me know how you feel about this concept and if you have info on it. This is video was great as are your others. Thank You.
