- With the 2016 gardening season coming to an end it is time to reflect on what went well and what did not. I do this every year so that I can learn and improve how much food I am able to produce from my small urban garden.

Hi Stephen, I just wanted to thank you for your videos and let you know that you inspired us to give gardening a try this season. After watching many of your videos last winter, we built a 10'x4' raised bed, the kids and I planted mostly butter lettuce, beets and Swiss Chard. It worked out pretty well for the first crack at it. I can't wait for next spring, thanks again!

Great video on reflection of the growing season. One of many things I like about gardening is learning something new each year. On less videos , that 's fine, you are doing the right thing , enjoy your family first. It's fun watching them grow up with the garden.
I too enjoy the constant exploration of new things and always learning in the garden! The same can be said about family! its always an adventure!
We all got busy this year! I got too busy to even watch, let alone make, videos. Travel, work and husband's injuries ate up all my time this year, but my garden was a priority. You know you love to garden if you plan your vacation the 1 month (August) when things are relatively dormant! Keep the videos coming! I've learned a lot from you. Thanks!
I plan my time off in the winter so I never miss a week during the season. That said my season is much shorter than yours ;)

pennies around the slug plants and a couple plastic tubs upside down will really help you get rid of slugs. Pick the tub out and kill regularly during wet time.
We all had one of the best growing seasons, primarily because of the consistent warm summer. I always like your interesting video Stephen.

My family is paramount! I have slowed down the progress of losing weight but will kick it into high gear again!! I have a mission now!
I'm so glad you have had a great year, Stephen, and I really enjoyed the video about it. Here in Vancouver we also had a great year, although dry at times - you must have received a lot of our usual rainfall! We have loved having the increase in sun, but we're still getting used to water shortages and hoping there's a happy medium.

Your skin is looking healthier man. I can see that the mineral-rich food is helping and this encourages me to load my composts up.
My skin feels better too but thats hard to convey on UA-cam! a balanced varied diet is all I have been doing!

Thanks for another great video. Stephen, as I mentioned a few months ago, I started with the BTE garden method. I absolutely love it and others in my community watched and saw the lack of weeding I had to do. We had an extremely, and I mean extreme dry year, plus my soil is sand, yet I did not water any of my gardens. I was happy with everything that I produced accept the potatoes. They were the only things that was not covered with wood chips in the spring, because they were in a new bed and I wanted to add a lot of compost and other and leaf matter to build the soil.

Your peppers looked tasty. This year I left my bell peppers in the raised bed garden hoping they'd survive the Melbourne winter, but with all the rain we had the fungi have gotten to them. Beets I also left in the worst soil in the garden under a neighbours tree that usually gets little to no rain, they did great and are still producing greens for the guinea pigs two years later albeit slowly in the heat of summer.
Reducing nutrient leaching would make a great video topic! I think it's a much more important topic than fertilizer. I'd suggest materials like those used in water filters that aren't designed to kill microbes. High cation exchange and porous materials like charcoal/biochar, peat/sphagnum moss, composted bark, materials used in primitive water filters like fired clay mixed with sawdust to create micropores, or alternatively bonsai materials. Aussie bonsai growers seem to like a mix of zeolite aka clinoptilolite (high CEC, but I'm not a fan of the aluminium and sodium component), diatomite (holds water, good air exchange, high CEC, and plants take up silica when water stressed), and an organic component or a constant feeding with liquid fertilizer. This year's Google Science Fair had a great Avocado skin and Orange peel super absorbent polymer recipe that may be interesting to trial. And I watched a great talk about dispersive soils the other day and the importance of getting cation ratios right, and how complicated it can be. I've read of farm trials that surround fields with ditches of wood chips or biochar to reduce nutrient runoff into waterways, and others using mushroom inoculated woodchips along banks of rivers that worked well. One study of a farm watershed showed that up to 90% of it's annual phosphorous and a lot of dissolved carbon was being washed away into waterways and polluting them, why I think it's a more important subject than fertilizer!
I think you are right. It is about time to get into nutrient leaching as a method to preserve the nutrients I have available instead of looking for a new method to add more.... your suggestions are great. I have taken a few notes and thank you for them!

Changing your video frequency will not affect me at all. I totally understand. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to the dropping temperatures a little. I'm going to see how long I can extend my season here in Calgary with cold frames and other experiments with thermal mass and solar heating.

I too had a good year that is not quit over yet but close. We got 2 crops of green beens the green peepers was my best yet in numbers and the first year for carrots has been successful. One thing I've learned is produce grown in containers tend to be smaller than in the ground. The one fail was my tomatoes that produced less than last year but on the bright side no blossom end rot.After many years for trying finally success. =)
That is wonderful!! I have never had an issue with BER and I attribute that to my soil and good varieties ;)

Good vid. Had hail take out my garden a couple two or three weeks ago. Tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers , Flowers, Herbs, etc. mostly gone
That is tough! I can feel your pain!! I lost some crops to hail but was able to salvage most.

Thank you once again, I am now binge watching all of your videos :-) I just purchased my herb seeds from west coast seeds and I hope to start them for an indoor garden within the next month. I am currently on the hunt for pepper seeds :-) then it shall be tomato seeds :-)

Great video once again , I am not sad at all that my northern Alberta growing season is over as I have taken up indoor hydroponics and after three weeks I have a jungle of kales lettuces and basil to feed myself and family I almost can't keep up to it some of the kale leaves are as big as my head lol .

I was in Calgary a couple weeks ago and it was absolutely beautiful. Three pepper crops in zone three? you are making me look bad in zone 5!
The pepper pruning works wonders I tell you! That said we did have a great year for them. hot and dry to get going and then rain and heat to keep them going.
wonderful video glad you had such a great growing season, do you have any videos on your channel about how to take a cutting from grapes or is that even possible? my uncle has a variety that seems to be very strong and hearty so was hoping to add it to my garden as well.

I am working on propagating grapes next spring! There are two methods that my grandfathers have shown me. The first is to bury new growth and dig it up the following spring. it should have rooted and will get established. The second method is the one I have to wait for the spring to complete. When you are pruning take cuttings and bury a number of dormant buds under soil. It should root giving you a new plant. That said I have not confirmed nor verified.
Have you considered growing mushrooms inside your house or basement? You can do that in the winter if the temperature inside is right.
I was thinking about that and was going to do some research. I should start that soon!

Have one quick question , we have been doing a little bit of research on nitrogen fixers in the vegetable garden. Came across one article on bean and pea crop being nitrogen fixers. Dumb question, is it the root system of these plants that do the fixing or the part above ground. So do you cut the plant at ground level leaving the root system in the ground to do the nitrogen fixing o,r is it the above ground part therefore, mulching the above ground part on the ground to break down over winter?

no the nitrogen fixing happens in the soil. The roots put out an attractant and the bacteria that can fix nitrogen are attracted. When they come in contact with the root a node is formed to protect the exchange of sugar for bio available nitrogen. If you use a cover crop let the frost kill the plant or chop and drop it before it flowers. that will leave the nitrogen and good bacteria in the soil where it is needed. I have a video on the subject if you are interested.

Nice job, Stubbs, with the garden this year (and this video). You know,Stubbs, you live so far north, it might be worth it to install a small cold frame type greenhouse. Things are winding down here in southern BC, too. But I'm still growing stuff. My late planted green beans should start producing in about a week. Fingers crossed for a beautiful Indian summer, here.
