Work Smart Not Hard in the Garden

- This week I don't have much to do in the garden so I pruned and trained my grapes, pruned my tomatoes and spent some time enjoying the garden.

Same here, Stubbs. Everything is established and growing, so now it's more like putter maintenance. Actually the lawn keeps me busier; hand weeding, trimming around the beds and stopping encroachment, seeding bare spots, watering and mowing, etc.
I try to do my lawn work in the spring and then just enjoy it. That said I don't have much lawn to worry about!
Now that the garden is all planted, like you said, there is not much to do... Just a little weeding, which I don't even consider a chore any longer since it's just a few minutes a week, and it allows me to spend some time unwinding in the garden. For me the best thing to do is pruning my tomatoes, I absolutely love the smell that tomato plants leave on my hands, a smell that will last for hours even when I go back inside and work on my computer or in the garage. Maybe even better is just spending time watching, learning, this is my first year gardening so I am learning many things and already thinking on what I will do differently next year 😄
Wow your first year my friend and you are growing such a wonderful garden! Congratulations!
Some days I take my favourite Garden UA-camrs videos out to the garden with a coffee and just enjoy both at the same time!
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable the only reason I was able to be so successful in my first year, is thanks to people like you, who share their knowledge, tips and tricks. I have spent months reading and watching UA-cam videos and learned a lot - I am now in the second phase where I am learning from my own mistakes :)
That is wonderful! I am so glad I can help and that is a big reason why I do this work!
The best part of gardening for me is to wake up every morning and see the progress of my gardens. From time to time a new plant will come up in the beds here and I know that its a gift from the birds that hang out here. Its cool to go online and see what plant is growing that I don't recognize that the birds have dropped as seed. Each day normally brings something new to the gardens here. As always thanks for sharing your video. :)
Birds are both the bringer of new and the eater of my darn crops lol.
It is really nice to go out and observe !!
I put up "Eat Here Only" signs for the birds but that never worked. Maybe I can have a wall built around my property and have my neighbors pay for it. ")
lol I know where that idea came from ;)
Good luck with the birds. Its something I don't have to deal with them that often.
Love these new blog style vids. Looking very happy and healthy steve! take care
I am glad you enjoy them my friend!
I am finding myself quite happy these days! it is really just a good time!
I hope you have a good one my friend!
First video I've checked out in quite awhile... glad to see you are still producing A+ stuff... also, looks like you've been shedding the winter fluff! Well done brother, keep it up!
Glad you are back ! I am still having fun and I really love the continued improvement!
I have lost some weight and In appreciate your noticing!
We love to watch the bugs. The bumble bees and soldier beetles and wasps all hang out and do their part. Great video, happy gardening :)
I love watching the bees work :)
we just started our garden, and posted a little tour on our channel.
it is amazing how much it has already changed in a few short weeks!
Good luck and nice garden by the way.
thanks!
your right about weeds and mulch. My leaf waste is more of a pine needle mix but i placed it over my potatoe bed. There are very few weeds in this bed and i will be doing this from now on through out my garden. such a time saver and the mulch will break down to help the soil anyways. kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
I enjoy your vlogs. keep them up!
Mulch is so slick ;)
I certainly will keep them coming! I really enjoy doing them!
I really like this video Stephen. And I agree, I like to watch what is going on. When I get home from work, I get out of my car and walk through my garden (even though my husband is waiting for dinner!). And it looks like your son didn't mind that bike ride home. I think that was my favorite part of your video. Absolutely adorable!
Husbands can wait. The garden feeds them too :)
My son and I bike most places if we have the time :) glad you enjoyed the video! I have to pull out some spent peas and plant lingonberries with my son today !
my favourite thing to do in the garden is eat. great video. Garden is looking awesome to thanks for sharing.
I love to snack as well!
The garden is growing like crazy! Every day the garden looks different and I have to do a touch of training which I don't mind!
Expert level seccateur twirl! The garden is looking great! At some point you just have to enjoy your hard work, sit down, have a cup of whatever, just pluck at leaves, watch a bug and dream away. The last week or two, i didn't feel like doing any major chores anymore and i just left it. Plenty of food, let's stop here and just potter around for a while. Never got this far either. Took me 4 years to clear the place and get 5 small raised beds in, which covers 1/4 of the garden, this winter/spring i did the entire rest of the garden. I'm amazed actually.
I completely agree it is nice to take some time and enjoy or delay ;)
I am glad you like my twirl :) its a habit from a job I had once.
Great video! The garden is looking awesome.
Thank you my friend!
The jazz samples you use are great!
Thanks lol
Picking your son up from the "dayhome"...Cute Canadianisms! Garden is looking great. Your dog Danger is a cutie too. I'll have to feature my pups in future videos. Work continues on the homestead garden and lot here....
I had no idea that was a Canadianism. :)
Keep up the good work. I will have to stop by to see your puppies.
Charming video Stephen! Gardening for me is a way to forget about every thing, it's a very zen thing and at the same time it keeps me in shape, moving rocks to make a new bed, picking up compost bags etc I always feel more toned (not sure it's the right word?) in Summer.
I agree! I feel more fit in the summer largely do to moving more in the garden! It is wonderful!
I really like that strawberry ground cover idea Stephen. I am going to sit down this weekend and figure out a space where I can use that myself.
It works quite well too! Nothing like adding more food producing crops in what would have been a wasted area.
True, and you know, I should have thought of it myself, we have some small wild strawberries in the yard that do the exact same thing, just in between the weeds that also grow in that area lol
Lol that's too funny. Glad I could help :)
I'm very much impressed..Thank you very much for sharing..
i like your new format but happy to read you aren't completely abandoning the scientific ones. I do like your grapes as it is something I am not familiar but don't have the room with everything else. My favorite thing in the garden is the stress reducing aspect, something I don't realize until I have been weeding awhile. It frees the mind.
That bike tunnel is a great feature too .
It's a fun format but I won't ever give up my science and how-to clips. I just like the variety.
The bike shoot was so much fun but tough to do!
I agree the garden helps free my stress and feed my body and mind.
Great video! You should include your family more. Cute boy. Biking to the farmers market looked like fun.
The farmers market is great !
It's great to be in maintenance mode, so to speak. It's amazing what you can get done, if you do just a little bit at a time.
I completely agree. This time of year I spend a few minute each day as things are growing so fast. It's nice though ! Easy fun and enjoyable !
Lovely update thank for sharing have a blessed day
Thank you my friend !
Once planting ends harvest begins! Had our first meal of garlic scapes tonight and cut back the mint as its just about to flower. Always seems to be something to do but I find with many types of crops I have staggered planting and harvest.
I am proud that my harvests start just before I am finished planting.
I do like the new Vlog format. Very entertaining.
Glad you enjoy it Phillip. It is fun to put together!
One of my favorite things to do in the garden, is eat. I love to snack on fruit and veg from the garden while walking around looking at the plants. And love to have meals outside in the garden.... Loving your videos. Very nice. Thanks :)
Your garden is looking amazing and my gosh, your dog is getting HUGE!
Thank you :) Danger is done growing he is just filling out now. He is 20% larger than pickles.
Thanks...😊
I like your video, thank you very much for sharing it. I just start my small garden in Canada, I hope it will grow good, thank again for the video.
I certainly hope I can help you. Please let me know if you have any questions.
I like to just sit on the porch ofmy summer house, looking over my garden, seeing something that needs doing then return. Perhaps watch a youtube film or read something in a book then go do something about it. The more I learn the more I realise I know very little but I plod on regardless hoping one day it will allcome together.
Isn't that the truth. The more we all learn the more we realize we kneed to know more ! As long as you enjoy the process that's what matters.
Shout out from texas, keep the scientifical videos coming.
Howdy my friend!
I have a few more science videos coming they just take a touch more time :)
ooh loved opening music.
me too I thought it was appropriate for the subject!
Great clip Stephen. Cheers mate.
Thank you my friend. How is winter treating you?
Sitting here shivering in the chill of 20°C my friend 😩 Might have to go get a flanno (flannelette) in a tick to put over my T shirt 😉
lol 20 is a hot day.... we are still getting down to 10c at night ;)
Oh, hello Mr. Honey Bee! That was funny ;-)
Candid moment I thought I would leave in there !
I like this casual approach to this video. sometimes all that scientific stuff gets a bit dry
That is why I am trying to mix it up a touch ;)
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable 👍
My favorite thing is to pick and eat the produce. Should have tomatoes is 2 or 3 weeks and green beans before that.
Well one sir! I won't get tomatoes until July for sure!
My favorite "task" is to plan the next expansion. Im not sure if the next step is more trellis, Beneficial bug habitats, or maybe putting down a better pathway between the beds. I love to build and watch not only my plants grow, but the whole yard becoming more usable. Im on 1.223 acres, and barely have 350sq ft of garden plus a few dozen young trees(this is their second summer, and I havent noticed any fruit).
That is wonderful!! I would love that much space. My vision is nearly complete with the space I have!
whats next on your list?
***** More trees. at least 3 fig, 5 more apples, and a couple pears. I love to make pear brandy with the pear grown in the bottle.
Also non-fruit trees. Mimosa, willow, and theres a native tree around here that has a silver color to the underside of the leaves that I always like. Forgot the name, but thats nothing new.
Of course, Id need some irrigation in some areas, and probably a deck or gazebo. Plus more rain collection(7500L would do), a few more garden beds, another bat house, swallow nest structure, a water well(irrigation not drinking), some privacy hedges/screens, more honeysuckle, and probably a few other things.
***** corredtion, I WOULD love to make pear brandy. I dont have any pear trees yet.
I plan on making Perry with my pears (cider just with pears)
I would love to make one with it in the bottle too.... oh now you have me thinking!
it sounds like you have big plans! I would love to have the space for that!
I love the philosophy, Stephen ; )
Keep it simple and enjoy it more!
Damn, Steven, the garden looks great (no surprise there) and you look awesome! You seem to have lost quite some weight over the winter! I was busy with my garden - as you know from my Facebook page "Orto In Scatola", which you kindly follow - and I must have missed a few of your last posts... Congratulations on the weight loss, on your gardening. Is it just me or you feel more comfortable with this new more personal vlog format?
Thank you my friend! I do cram a lot into a small space! In about a month it is my favourite time of the year. Green everywhere and ever single square foot of space is producing food!
I have lost some weight and thank you so much for noticing! It has been a journey that I will continue and so far is going well!
I do love the photographers eyes you have on your Facebook page! It is a treat to see when you post! I am glad the damage was not that bad with the loss of your tomato strings! I now plan on using bamboo to support my container tomatoes!
Hey, just watched your video and we are not sure what zone you are in but have a question regarding the Chicago fig...need ideas ours is pathetic. Did you make a post about how you grew it already...because our zone 5 mtn has happily given us 3 incredibly tiny leaves and we are sure it could be doing better than that..Also, regarding your tomatos in pots..not sure if you have dollar tree stores near you but if you can access a cheapie store that sells windshield visors for vehicles cheaply, then you can use those to wrap your black pots not that summer is in full swing and really cool things off. Basically a thick mylar material but easier to work with. I even use it in my beds to cool things off as our sun is beams at an incredibly hot angle all day long here. Sometimes even use a bowl or bucket of water in the empty space to cool things off though biointensive gardening might be wiser. Water is a big limitation for us...no hose, just big barn far away...and no developed irrigation system yet..just lots of buckets and containers hauled around. Thanks for insight o the grapes too.
I have a few videos coming over the next week or two on container gardens that should help explain my methods for growing my figs and tomatoes.
I haul a lot of water around too ;)
Just More Good Tips..
Glad you liked it!
*****
Always, maybe I should fire you up once in a while, just to keep it real.
I appreciate it my friend! It helps me keep going on this weekly video business!
Yayyy :-)) I lOVED THIS !!!! Too bad UA-cam only lets me "like" it once ..
I certainly appreciate the like and feedback !
your garden is my inspiration! thanks for sharing! I have been thinking of planting grapes. I saw grapes at a garden center, are those usually hardy to zone 3? anyways, my favorite part of gardening are seeing fruit and vegetables start flowering!! I do have a question. can you use cut grass to mulch vegetable bed? my grass is inundated with dandelions so I don't know if this is a good idea. THANKS!! BTW, I have been harvesting my strawberries. I have been getting 1 bowl full of strawberries 2x per week!! the best part is that my nephews loves harvesting them with me!! ☺
I am glad I can inspire you my friend! It is really nice to hear!
I would not use grass in my garden as it can spread weeds. Once you get good at hot composting you can use it there but wait until then!
Go for the grapes they are wonderful!
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has said this but you look like Patrick Wilson the actor.
That is the first time :) but I appreciate it. I love his work !
my garden is coming along great But my plants are all mostly still smaller, can i mulch or will that risk covering and i should wait till everything is a bit bigger? clover seems to be my main and only problem weed and my gosh seems like over night you pick it all and Bam more is back lol
I would wait awhile until your plants are a little larger. it just helps avoid mistakes.
I have chickweed and that does show up quick!
Love your videos, very informative. Quick question, do you know the brand/model of those pruners?
No idea I am sorry. I believe my wife picked them up for me. Why do you ask ?
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable they look quality and like they have a nice heft to them, I need a new pair and was just curious. Thanks!
Ill take a look tomorrow night if you like. Just remind me!
Hi mate, you look very experimental in growing vegetables.love to see your enthusiasm.
here is something that I would like to ask .. what if we use hydroponic advance nutrients like voodoo juice or big bud or micro ,grow and bloom fertilizer stuff in the soil? do the beneficiary bacteria dies? do the plants like these nutrients in soil?
please share a video response if possible
thanks in advance
Harry from Australia
It looks like you slimmed down in this video. Is it a result of your garden produce or did you get into some exercise program?
hi there just wondering if you can help me out with something recently moved to a new place and I have a plant that is growing up I thought it was cucumber but I'm not sure how to identify it cuz just wondering if I take a picture of it would you be able to help me out
What kind of mulch do you use? I'm assuming it's all natural. I use ebony bark for perennials flowers and shrubs but would prefer something natural for the vegetables and berries.
I use fall leaves, coffee grounds and egg shells. If you like here is a clip on it
ua-cam.com/video/Jh3H2d_WFTE/v-deo.html
Hi Stephen. Love all of your videos. I have a question not related to this video but more to your tests on different garden products, etc. I have a terrible slug infestation in my garden and yard. They've been eating my hostas for years and I let them, but now that I have a vegetable garden they are making the journey there. I see many slimy trails across my brick border and many slugs in my beds eating greens, etc. I would like to use sluggo in my garden ... the container says it's OMRI listed, but is it really safe for my soil? Is there residual I should be concerned about? Or would there be a buildup of iron? Maybe a subject for another video?? :)
I am already working on that video my friend. I'll take a look into it and try to get that video out in two weeks.
Thanks Stephen! :) I'll look forward to it.
pruning tomatoes actually increases yield if you do it right
From what I have read it increases yields per square foot because you can have more plants in a smaller space. That is how I understand it. I would be interested to ready other sources !
right, in the video you said it decreases yields when you prune. I think it has more to do with how the plant diverts its energy and the fruiting ordering than the number of plants per square foot. Just do a simple test: prune a few plants and leave a few unpruned and then measure the yields. And do this without adding more pruned plants. So evaluate it on a a per plant basis instead of square foot basis..
That would be an interesting test! I certainly wish I had the space to test it! I will do some research on the issue!
Nice video man - new sub here. Have you had success with getting fruit from your hot peppers grown 100% indoors? Is this even possible for the hot peppers to do on their own or is some human pollination required?
Yes I grow them indoors under lights every year. No issues at all.
Peppers are self fertile so you don't have to worry about anything.
if you like I can send you a link to a few pepper videos and indoor growing videos that I have done.
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable Thanks for the reply! Those links would be great if you could send them!
here is a playlist with all of my pepper videos. Please excuse the older ones.

happy viewing and feel free to ask questions as they come up!
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable thank you so much!! Very much appreciated. I look forward to your future videos.
I am just glad I can help!
No videos other than 3 years ago ?
Hello Stephen, we had massive hail storms and rains and my garden is somewhat flooded on one end...
I lost 4 large mortgage lifter tomato plants I guess because of the water logged soil.
Any ideea what I could plant now in their stead?
Fast crops like leafy greens, herbs, carrots, radish, beets will all do well now.
Did you remove the tomatoes yet? If not just leave them for a few days to see what happens.
we just got one heck of a storm too
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable Didn't remove them yet, I am still slightly hoping but they are dead :(
We had almost every day storms last week, a few hail storms too...some weird weather came from austria to hungary and then to Romania, now it's hot and humid like in the tropics, we are sweating like mad...
I will probably plant carrots because I don't have any and maybe some more beetroots :)
Radishes/spinach on this heat...not sure they would work?!
yup they will germinate in a few weeks and do frailly well. Interesting note things don't bold due to heat. They do so because of the length of sun exposure and if it is increasing or decreasing.
give the tomatoes at least 10 days to see if they will recover. Tomatoes with a good root system are stubborn and can grow quickly.
+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable They are burried very deep and have been pruned to bush out (and oh brother did they bush out)
I will give them some time and we'll see what happens...
the flooded garden got me thinking I might need raised beds in the end there where it flooded at least, I have a small lake in my garden :))
That is a great reason to build raised beds! Might is suggest building them similar to my main beds. those will stand the test of time and be high enough for the water even when it ponds not to matter.
Hey, did you lose a boatload of weight? You're looking much skinnier vs your first videos.
I may have :) still working on it !
I really appreciate your noticing. It sure makes me feel pretty good !
I'm happy for you man. I'm a bit of a yoyo dieter trying to lose about 100 lbs so I see weight on people. I've lost 40 lbs, then put 30 lbs back on and now trying to lose again. Keep up the good work;)
It certainly is not easy and I crept up in weight over the years. I just need to be able to keep up with my son !
I know the struggle and I wish you luck my friend!
