How to check valve clearance on 2017+ Husqvarna 701 | KTM 690 SMCR

- In this video I explain how to check the valve clearances on my 2017 Husky 701 Supermoto.
DISCLAIMER - This video is a rough guide on how I checked my valves. I am not a trained mechanic, I just followed the service manual. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
My bike is the 2017 model, Which has the updated engine. It will be the same process for the 2017 Enduro model too and also a very similar process for the 2016+ KTM Duke 690 (same engine). The 2018 to 2021 models will also be a very similar process as well as the 2019+ ktm 690. They have a slightly revised decompressor mechanism but I can 't imagine they'd change the valve train.
Intake specs are 0.10 to 0.15 @20 Celcius (68F)
Exhaust specs are 0.2 to 0.25 @20 Celcius (68F)
Mine were in spec so didn't need to change the shims but I'd imagine they'll need done on the next service.
Any questions, drop them in the comments and i'll reply ASAP.

Nice piece. I'm preparing to do mine's 12k service soon so really helpful to see it run through. I don't plan to change the plugs unless they really need it though. Thanks Twedymoto.
I was bordering on torching my 701 while struggling to get the valve cover off until I saw this - you're a legend, cheers!
I was in the same boat until I figured it out 🤣
Someone in Austria's ears were definitely burning for a while earlier, I can tell you that. 😅
Good vid man. Gonna start pointing people here when they ask me about valves. Mine are due for a check soon but bikes been starting easy so doubt they're out any. Trying to do better about supporting my fellow 701 UA-cam community
Cheers Steve. Mine has been starting fine and stuff, just a little noisey but nothing out of the ordinary for these motors. It was due a check as I hit 6200 miles, replaced the spark plugs and fuel screen too and it's happy now!!
Cheers for sharing chap very helpful
No problem 👍
I hope the next video will be epic?
Happy New Year ✨🎇🥂
Great video.
I was thinking about doing this myself on my 2017 701....and then I watched this.
What a nightmare. I'll just cough up the cash and pay to have it done.
If you've got the tools and time to do it then give it a go mate. Will save you a good few hundred at the dealers! It was a faff the first time but should be a lot easier when I do them again in a few weeks. 👍
Thanks mate great how to subscribed 👍
thank you! Top!!
Thanks I am very interested in those decals.
I get my graphics kits from MCN Grafix! www.mcngrafix.com/
that tekmo headerpipe 😵
Make one changing your shims please 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Did you find a video showing the shim change?
Thanks great video. When I removed the plastic cover to reveal the crankshaft bolt oil poured out, is that normal?
if you had thebike on the side stand then that's probably right as that's where the oil level would be. If it was upright, it may have been over filled slightly but not much should have come out.
Nice explanation, but I'm looking for the how to get to the shim... Do you have some picture of the shop manual about how to get there ?
Thank you
If you use facebook, there's full versions of the service manuals on the husqvarna 701 group in the files section. The intake side is easy, just move the cam over but the exhaust side needs a bit more work.
@@Twedymoto BIG TIME Thank you ;-)
Thanks for making this video. I have a SMCR 2020. I think it’s the same engine. When removing the coils did you pull them out of the plastic holder or just disconnect the cables and undo the two screws and pull the whole lot out?
And what did you use for the “special tool” to lock the crank at TDC, a screw driver?
No problem. yes, the 2020 SMCR is the same engine as my 2017 (some minor mechanical differences) but has more advanced electronics (cornering ABS, throttle maps etc). I removed the plugs from the top of the coils, took the screws out and took the whole lot out. I don't recall locking it in TDC, I was just careful not to move it but you could use a screwdriver or a long bolt (M6 i think, could be wrong though). Hope this helps :)
Hello!I just want to tighten up the 4 valve box screws.Do i have to remove the whole airbox?
If you mean the rocker cover screws, then i'm not 100% sure. You can get at the left side one easily but the front and rear right might be a pain. take the plastics off and get a look in.
Where do you get the decals for the rear swing guard? Thanks
Those ones were from independant racing. MCN grafix is where I've got all my new ones from though and have many designs and also do custom work.
I think you said measure the inlet valve clearance between the cam and the finger follower. Would it not be between the follower and the shim?
Regards, IanB
It's been a while since I recorded the video so it's possible I said that but yes, it needs measured between the shim and follower! 👍 :)
I didn't see other videos say taking a spark plug out was required to turn the engine crank to Top Dead Center?
Taking a plug out makes it easier to get to tdc so that you're not fighting the compression of the engine. I was replacing mine anyway so that's why I had them out. 👍
my bike stalled one day and won’t start at all. but i also think it might need new shims on the valves because it’s over 1k past the check. do you think that would stop it from starting at all?
Tight valves can be a cause of it not starting when hot among other issues but to be 1,000mioes past the check it shouldn't be that bad. Hope you got it sorted. 👍
@@Twedymoto yup all good now lol. i just let it sit for like 2 weeks n then came back to it and it started back up.. kind of a random thing to happen but it’s running like new now so can’t complain
'the bellend icon' lol good vid
how many km had the bike in this video at this time ?
6200 miles I think mate. 👍
Wow didn't realize how different the new motor is. Guess ktm fixed the rocker arm bearing issue lol
Yeah, I was a bit dubious about checking the valves myself as i wasn't sure about the new design but it's a piece of cake! As far as I'm aware, there haven't been any rocker arm failures on the new motors!!
@@Twedymoto Friend, if the tolerances were higher, what would you have to do to the bike to make it work normally? What would you have to change?
Thanks for your reply.
You would need to remove the old shims and fit the correct sized ones to bring the clearances back withing spec.
@@Twedymoto how do you remove all that stuff, considering there are no more simple rocker arms with a pivot pin?
I've not had to do it yet but the intake side is easy, you just slide the cam over and the shims lift out. For the exhaust side you need to remove the rocker arm which is just a couple of bolts.
Can anyone (including Twedymoto) confirm this is the same process on a 2019+ KTM 690 Enduro? Thanks,
As far as I'm aware there haven't been any major changes to the head since the launch of the new engine ( with balance shaft in the head), but there have been a few revisions to the decompression mechanism so should be very very similar or exactly the same process. 👍
Fucking absolutely stunning video mate 👌 btw, do you have any sexy pals that drive a ktm?
One has a mint 450 and the other has an bitching 525. xx
Twedymoto Aww how sweet 😘❤️💟💞
😘✊💧
So, same fuckup than on the usual 4 banger sports bikes. Compactness brings this kind of things....bwahhaaaa
KINDA A WASTE OF TIME IF YOU DON'T ACTUALLY SHOW HOW TO ADJUST THE VALVES.
Not really, as the description is how to check clearance not adjust them.
@@Twedymoto That's better. Thanks for editing your title. 😁 if you can add 2019 + bikes, that would even be better. ✌🏼
Just so folks that have older bikes can cruse on by. And not waist there time looking at your fine video. Just a thought though. 🏍
Have a good one
