Colleague of mine got a ThinkCentre M91P (i5 2400, 8 GB RAM) from work and put a 1050ti low profile video card in it (currently the best low profile card that doesn’t need additional power), and it is a BEAST. You should review a setup like that, your results will go through the roof.

Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, Legend of Zelda Windwaker HD, Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess HD, Super Mario Maker, Bayonetta 1&2, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Super Smash bros and Mario Kart 8 are all great games and really great to play on a 4K TV.
Would've been better if he used a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF, looks better and the weird-PSU is a little stronger. He could've definitely mated a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD/2TB HDD, to a 32GB-DDR31866, running a 4GHz Core i7-4970 and a GTX 1050 Ti-4GB-LP at stock speeds. More powerful than a PS4 Pro, but still shy of a modern Gaming PC. All of that in a box which is around the size of the original Xbox One. And one that will continue gaming in 1080p/60fps in Medium graphics for the next 3 years on the cheap... unlike the consoles like the Xbox One X.
4K is not just double of 1080p. Its 4x of 1080p. Do the math: 1920x1080 = 2073600pixels. 3840x2160 = 8294400pixels. 8294400 ÷ 2073600 = 4 times more pixels.

Taking as much load off the CPU is a must for alot of those games, I wouldn't be surprised if frame-times ended up being better in 4k for some of them. Also just noticed that is an expensive thinkcentre for us Brits....£467 for a C2D....Damn thats a conversion and a half gone wrong..

Playing games at 4k is a case of the GPU calculating and rendering the scene on its own terms. The CPU just wasn't up to the task of media playback. Ironically, the PS1's CPU isn't up to the task of playing an MP3, it simply doesn't have the horsepower, but it certainly has audio, just that audio was never compressed to such a high degree, I'd say it's similar here.
This was shockingly CPU limited... L4D2 runs 300 fps on almost anything (FX and I believe as low as a GTX 960) at 4k high settings. That C2D was definitely holding it back, that's a very easy to run game.
most of these old games are single core optimized, with a couple dual-core optimized. Although that doesn't say that having 2 more cores to offload to the OS won't increase fps on the 2 cores dedicated to the game of course.

That is not how it works. Just because you have more cores doesn't mean that an application will be able to use them. Also parallelization of processes is not perfect and will always have a small performance hit. Also the q9550 is lower clocked then an e8400 so not double in the best case.
Yes, that's how it works with the Core 2 architecture. It is exactly double and 99% of applications gaming related use 4 cores or more. The 170mhz clock speed difference doesn't matter.

No, actually if you measure the dimensions it's only 2x dimensionally, 4x the pixels. That's actually how 'doubling' works when you double both dimensions.4x the surface area, but it is still 2x.
SFF PCs with a decent SFF card like this is basically a good alternative to consoles If you bought an SFF PC with a Sandy Bridge i5 or better and pair it with a GT 1030 or SFF GTX 1050/GTX 1050 Ti card it might matches the performance of current console or even beating it
Except you’re paying for the form factor. If you can possibly help it, get a full tower. Not only will you be able to get better GPUs for less money, but the power supply won’t be total shit.
But these are totally different scenarios. Sometimes you just need a SFF case (like the video). Tim already have an absurd collection of mid-full towers, and none of then would do the job.
Yeah, the Core 2 Duo is a little too extreme, but you can totally get away with this. There's plenty of AMD Athlons, FX's, or Intel i5's from older generations that are both readily available and up to the task. As long as you can take a normal form factor and don't buy the Vega with its absolutely godawful drivers, you can just crank up the res on a 1070 and game away at 4K. Bottlenecks aren't as problematic at high resolutions.

depends on the clock speed to me. I have a computer that runs a dual core at 3.7 GHz and it runs modern titles (with some graphics turned down) at a reasonable 42 FPS
Had to downgrade to an Ivy Bridge recently but I’m with you in spirit. And get a 4k monitor. It’s worth it. Maybe wait until HDR becomes more adopted, or just get a second hand TV.
You could probably run Cemu Breath of the Wild on that thing! It's got an Nvidia card, good per-core performance, and it actually runs many other games in 4K!

it has no SSD but hard drive only 4gb of DDR3 ram assuming a core 2 Dou intel and a GTX 1030 how can games run at that resolution with that much ram installed?
Swap the e8400 in for an x5470 which is quad core each running @3.33 GHz and enjoy even higher fps using the same card@4k, and the x5470 is 30 dollars US so sweet upgrade!!!

I had a pentium 4 631 in my system before, but at the time i ordered my q9550 i couldnt find any q9650 on the cheap. But its a pretty good cpu.

SFF PCs with a decent SFF card like this is basically a good alternative to consoles
If you bought an SFF PC with a Sandy Bridge i5 or better and pair it with a GT 1030 or SFF GTX 1050/GTX 1050 Ti card it might matches the performance of current console or even beating it

Except you’re paying for the form factor. If you can possibly help it, get a full tower. Not only will you be able to get better GPUs for less money, but the power supply won’t be total shit.
But these are totally different scenarios. Sometimes you just need a SFF case (like the video). Tim already have an absurd collection of mid-full towers, and none of then would do the job.

Yeah, the Core 2 Duo is a little too extreme, but you can totally get away with this. There's plenty of AMD Athlons, FX's, or Intel i5's from older generations that are both readily available and up to the task. As long as you can take a normal form factor and don't buy the Vega with its absolutely godawful drivers, you can just crank up the res on a 1070 and game away at 4K. Bottlenecks aren't as problematic at high resolutions.

depends on the clock speed to me. I have a computer that runs a dual core at 3.7 GHz and it runs modern titles (with some graphics turned down) at a reasonable 42 FPS

Swap the e8400 in for an x5470 which is quad core each running @3.33 GHz and enjoy even higher fps using the same card@4k, and the x5470 is 30 dollars US so sweet upgrade!!!
