Cool Gypsy Jazz Solos - An Easy Scale Over C7
Here’s a cool little hack that will help when you’re playing over a Dominant 7 chord.
The concept is that we are going to play anything we would usually play in Gm over the C7 chord.
This will give your solo lines a cool modern gypsy jazz sound.
In the video lesson you’ll also learn a Gm type scale that you can play over the C7.
So if you play over a D7 play all your Am licks.
Over E7 play Bm ideas and so on.
The concept of playing the minor scale over a dominant 7 chords a great start but don’t be limited to only the notes from the scale. Use it as a springboard to introduce some wild and wonderful new sounds into your solos!

Another classic Robin lesson! I learn more from you, more quickly and clearly than ALL the other guitar tutor videos I watch. I can’t thank you enough for this, and that these are free! Looking forward to seeing you in Melbourne one day. 👍😀
mick davidson thanks for the kind words so glad the lessons help and yes Melbourne is in my sights! Robin

The “minor” he’s referring to, is actually the Dorian mode (which is a type of minor scale) but most people will think of the G Aeolian mode when someone says “G minor”... so his nomenclature while not technically wrong is potentially quite confusing.
Basically, in this key; the key of F major (with one flat, being the B) the C is Mixolydian, and the G is Dorian. The “natural minor” that most people call “the minor scale” is Aeolian, and in this key would be all the same notes but starting on the sixth degree of the F major scale; ‘D’.
So in this key if you tell someone to play “the minor scale” most people would assume you are referring to ‘D Minor’, NOT ‘G Dorian’.
I get that it’s common to use Dorian for minor chords in Gypsy Jazz, but feel it would be much clearer for many, to be explicit about the distinctions.
Thomas Hope Thanks a lot for that clear explanation Thomas that really help clear up the theory behind this idea. Line I said in broad strokes I play my G blust minory licks that I already know over C7 and it works. Appreciate the comment 🎸❤️Robin
@@GypsyJazzSecrets That's why you are such a great teacher : It's good to know the theory but it can become confusing if you're not a professional musician, and the way you explains things make them perfectly clear to everybody. Django didn't know any of that and he played some of the best solos ever !!
Clément Oubrerie so true!
Lots of folks don't know the Greek modes or the CAGED system. I think Robins explanation is pretty cool because it might encourage some people to dig deeper into the theory.
flat9design worth exploring!
Hi Robin, Thanks so much!
welcome John! Robin
I believe this is what my teacher meant by "ii the V" 🙂
Definitely a great improv mnemonic!
Q yes that makes sense! Cheers. Robin
So I see what you are doing here. Rather than explaining the mode or G major being home-base. You teach ( G minor Scale ) I can see how that would make a concept easy. I like It. very cool.
Great glad it helps man, always doing my best to simplify! Robin
Thanks Robin.
Welcome Jasón! Robin
You can hear "the lick" roughly 1 minute into the video. Also, how you get a humbucker installed on an acoustic?
BrunoDSL we just built the humbucker in .. good fit!
Is a minute too long to wait?

Very nice! Much appreciated Robin. By the way, your apartment looks really cool. The video you did showing us your neighborhood and general area where you live is great. It looks like a very nice place to live.
Thanks Steve glad it helps. Yes the neighborhood is great and it’s called Prinseneiland, a lovely part of Amsterdam! Robin
@@GypsyJazzSecrets Cool and it has a nice name as well.
@@stevedouglas7375 indeed!
The parent of G Dorian is F major. C7 is the 5th chord in F. That's why it works but I love his explanation better. BECAUSE When you visualize and play G Dorian over C7 it sounds way better than playing F licks. Thanks for your contributions. You inspire us to create more lessons like this one!
Stokes Music Studios Online yes that works for me and somehow creates cooler lines than using F major like you say... Stay inspired! Robin
Nice!

Robin Hi - Another KewL lesson 😎. Does this “concept” work for all Dominant 7th chords as to play the minor scale of the 5th of the chord: G is the 5th of C - so say could we use an E minor scale over an A7 chord to solo ?
Thanks Robin !
Yes to get that ‘Dorian’ minor sound over the 7 chord works!
Thanks teacher!!! I dream playing gipsy on my fiddle

Hi Robin, always enjoy one of your videos popping up in my feed.
Yesterday I was in the thrift and stumbled across "Organized Crime" in the c.d. bin - great!!!
Denver Walker oh wow that’s a blast from the past! A fun album. Cheers! Robin
The scale is G Dorian which is the same notes as C Mixolydian. Is mixolydian a common mode for Gypsy Jazz?
thanks for that Bryan exactly right. I guess you are right Mixolydian is a common sound - cheers! Robin
Nice, most rock players are comfortable in pentatonic and sometimes aeolian patterns, so this would open a door for some. I would sometimes think of a C7 as a C9th and try playing an E locrian scale ( i. e. from the third of the Dom C7 chord ). Also, substituting an Emin7(b5) chord for the basic C7 gives you a voicing for a C9th. It's very common in Blues and Rhythm and Blues to approach this chord from a 1/2 step above on the weak beat ( or the "and" of the fourth beat preceding ). Thus, an Fmin7(b5) then the Emin7(b5) on the switch where C7 might normally be played... then improvise with either C mixolydian or E locrian. This is especially cool on the IV7 chord of a Blues or Blues-like Rock structure. It gives another option besides just playing in the mind-numbing pentatonic scales.
Thanks for the insightful comment Steve excellent! 🙏💕🎸Robin
Which minor scale though Robin ? Natural /relative minor /Dorian /Aeolian ..? Thanks.
In this video it’s G Dorian Mark but I generally think ball Mark Gm when soloing 👍Robin
Just stumbled onto this channel...love it~!! The scales over the C7 remind me of some African folk songs I heard years ago, Songs of Senegal.
Scott Swan beautiful music from Senegal
Hey Robin. 2nd listen. Very nice and tangy.
This makes II V Is even easier. Wouldn't you just do Gm (II) Gm (=C7 i.e. V) and then Fma (I)? And since G Dorian is the same as Fma why not just play the F scale, but move the tonal centres through G, C and then back to F? Gosh am I beginning to make sense of jazz theory? 😏
PS that humbucker gives the XXX a nice warm tone.🔥 🎸
yes simplify always! Robin

Interesting lesson, Robin, but surely the D minor scale is a better fit over the C7 chord? As Mr. Albright rightly implies, the G minor scale contains an E flat, which "undermines" the E natural in the C7 chord! With the D minor scale, you get the important B flat (the 7 in the C7 chord), but you also get the E natural (the 3rd in the C7 chord). Comments welcome!
Yes you are right but the scale I suggested is basically G dorian which has the E natural.. this is the key note. For me I find it broadly speaking easier to just play Gm type licks when playing over C7. This is however just one approach of many - I will make more of these videos I think! cheers, Robin
@@GypsyJazzSecrets Aah - I see! G dorian, being the second mode of F major, which contains the same notes as D minor! We're back on the same page! Keep up the good (& always interesting) work, Robin!
The Seventh Beyond - Official UA-cam Channel haha yes will do!
Robin, Tons thanx. I recently learned about C7 and Gm relation from the Joe Pass book but you explained fully in this video. Masaki KOBE❤️❤️❤️

Masaki Shimazaki 🎸❤️
at 5:20, when you play the G Minor scale, it sounds like a White Album song
Ahhhh yes I think I know what you mean!
This sounds great. Playing those notes makes it C Mixolydian doesn't it? You're playing the notes of F major (second position) over a C7 chord which is the 5th chord in the F Major scale = Mixolydian. Love this so much.
Andy Lewin yes exactly Andy! Robin
i don't understand isn't c mixolydian a c major scale with a b flat in it instead of a b note??
Has a nice "Wes" sound to the C7.
yes exactly! Robin
0:59 That first round is so tasty! Love that latin jazz flair at the end :)

Great (and easy) idea Robin! Pat Martino does this all the time. BTW, what is the pickup on your guitar? Krivo? Inquiring minds want to know.
JAZZ GITAN hey man it’s a humbucker not sure which.. Martino is a master! Robin
JAZZ GITAN it’s a Joe Barden Humbucker as used by Danny Gatton 🔥
Eventho C mixolydian and G Dorian are 100% the same notes. It does help to think G dorian, for me at least, because thinkjng G dorian triggers different shapes in my brain creating more interesting lines than just C mixolydian. It gives me weirder combinations to play. Combinations is might not think of thinking just C mixolydian. It works with every other related scale degrees too. F Ionian are the same notes too. As is A phrygian. So 100% same notes, but thinking in different modes opens different shaoes in my brain while taking a solo
Martijn Zelle yes me the same Martijn , cheers Robin
Hi, great lesson !! what kind of looper do you use?
It's an Onner nano series Looper - very simple! Robin
nice... just focusing on G dorian mode, instead of straigh C mixolidian. also simplifying on pentatonics.. Gm6 ( T - b3 - 4 - 5 - 6 ) or C Penta-blues T - 3 4- 5- 7
Thanks Rod that’s helpful! Robin

Aren't you just playing the F major scale starting on Bb? Which would make sense since C7 is the V chord of F. Why call it G minor if you're not playing an Eb (G natural minor) or F# (G harmonic minor)?
Mr. Albright If I got this right, this is G Dorian, so F major would be the tonic of C7, correct?
Mr. Albright that works! I’m just thinking Gm because I find it easy to solo over minors so helps me. G Dorian is perhaps the correct name of scale? Robin
Edsel Oliveira yes Edsel G Dorian. Enjoy! Robin

A bit let down when I realized it was G Dorian from the same scale as C7, but definitely enjoyed the superpositioning of the arpeggios.. However! G harmonic minor: wow, thanks for inspiring me to try that one out
Dan Steinbok I think it’s good to hear how each nite sounds over the C7. Obviously the E natural and Bb are strong.. truth is you can link all these notes chromatically - good to target notes too... have fun! Robin
@@GypsyJazzSecrets Playing G minor harmonic - I think I may have stumbled into a Lydian Dominant as it has both the Bb and the F#. Give it a shot!
Dan Steinbok that sounds tasty!
So why does G dorian sounds good on C7? it are the same notes as c mixolidian but why does it sound good
It gives a cool flavor to the C7 with the strongest notes being E and Bb but it’s a good question… why? For some reason if I play and think G Dorian over C7 I play different lines then if I played C mixolidian 🙏🙌🎸
Can you play la gitane please robin
I don’t play that one - amazing piece best played by Stochelo or Angelo 🙌🙌
Would this mean that Bbmaj7 also works?
Pablo Cardona almost but it doesn’t have the E natural which is key to this sound (6th of Gm and major third of C7) 🎸❤️Robin
G dorian like in Blues over minor 7 chord... Nice :) so I can skip between that and regular Dominan 7 sound...
Peter Soton88 yes perfect Peter! Robin
Yep G dorian contains the same notes a C Mixolydian, the mode for a dominant chord. Add a B natural as a passing note, eg descend C,B,Bb for bebop sound. C7 is the 5 chord in F so you can play F Bb and C triads to achieve these notes over the C7 C9 C11 C13 chords.
Your just allowing your ear to hear what Gm scale stuff (whether modal or standard) sounds like over C7.
Yes exactly Alex!
Do you play an E instead of an Eb in the G minor scale? Shouldn’t it be an Eb?
Renato Landim yes E natural Renato. It’s more G Dorian and the E natural is an important part of the sound.. Robin
By sharpening the Eb you get G dorian, which has the same notes as C mixolydian (major scale with a flat 7), allowing you to use it over the C7
