How To Use Diminished Licks To Get That Gypsy Sound In Your Solos
In this lesson you'll learn how to get good at soloing in gypsy jazz.
This is especially useful for gypsy jazz guitarists who want to build confidence in their soloing.
A big part of the recognizable sound that Django and the gypsy players use is 'Diminished Harmony'.
This is what gives gypsy jazz solo lines their exotic flavor.
BUT it can be a headache to figure out where and how to apply diminished harmony to your solos, and there's much confusion surrounding this topic.
To make this very easy for you, I will teach you my simple 3-step system which you can use to get this sound in your solos.
Let’s clear up any confusion surrounding this topic and get crystal clear!
Here's How To Do It:
Step 1. Identify dim shapes for E7
Step 2. Play over 'Minor Swing' using the dim shapes in place of E7
Step 3. Now try an arpeggio or a lick based from the dim shapes
Try this concept on other tunes & keys like,
'Dark Eyes' & 'Sweet Georgia Brown'
Also don't be afraid to leave space! This will make your solo even more musical :-)
Don't over think this but instead be consistent and actually do it every day.
In one weeks time you will notice the difference!

Hello Robin, As a bassist looking ti expand my soloing vocabulary I have been enjoying your lessons immensely and was pleasantly surprised to hear you mention my old Quiet Riot and Ozzy bandmate, Randy Rhoads. Randy was a dedicated classical guitarist and would’ve been very proud to hear your kind words.
Rudy Sarzo
Lovely to hear from you Rudy and so happy you’re enjoying the lessons. I sent you a message on Instagram great to be in touch 🙏🙌🎸💕Robin
" Don't get lost in arpeggio land " the best quote of 2023. Really enjoy your approach, it's got street value. Hope to see ya playing in the UK or even a retreat sometime. Thanks from deepest, darkest Devon where there's not much Gypsy jazz going down although I recently discovered a pub in Exeter where they have Gypsy jam sessions once a month.
Great you found a jam in your neck of the woods mate… you know the drill have a go, take it slow and stay inspired! 🎸❤️🙌
That was brilliant. For years, I have been using the trick of playing a C natural note against a B7 chord (if the song is in Em) knowing it made it sound extra 'spicey' for some reason. Never thought of it as playing a C dim chord/scale until now. Genius! The idea that the F dim chord is just an E7 with a F note in it has blown my mind and expanded my lead guitar vocabulary almost instantly. Thanks for sharing your insight.
yes that's it mate...stay inspired! Robin
C diminished and B7 chord are the same. Play B7 with C bass note. You already know.
Great Robin! I really like the way you share your knowledge in portions which I can handle.
JonAadneAadnesen cool Jon i’m glad the lessons help! Robin
It's really cool that the diminished chord in a dominant context is a seventh with a flat 9. Also really cool how a diminished chord divides an octave into four equal slices!
Joe Z yes absolutely Joe! Robin
Hi. Robins lesson have always be educational but this is the best yet for me. Really clear explanation & really great examples. Thank you
thanks for the kind words Kevin.. I'm really glad the lessons help! Robin
Hello Robin. I've been playing guitar for 40 years, but have never enjoyed it as much as these last few months wen I've been learning the old GJ, which I've loved since I bought my first django LP in 1982 but never played.
Thanks for being so accessible and inspiring.
Great Guy so glad you’re having fun stay inspired! Robin

All your videos are so helpful and inviting . I take a little away from every lesson . I studied with Stephan Wrembel , he is fantastic , but you are a better teacher. Being able to stop and repeat your tutorials , without an eye on the clock , makes it all very helpful . Thank you !

Always informative Robin- thanks
cjh600 glad it helps mate, Robin
the dim shape can also be used for the minor 6th - over the second 4 bars of autumn leaves (if played in Aminor) you can use the half diminished shape on the 2nd fret - that's Dm6 - (index finger location on A string 2nd fret) then move to 5th fret, then drop a string and move the shape up one fret - that's now E7 - move it up 3 for another E7 - then up one string and you've completed the journey with Am6 without changing the diminished shape. magic!
antonyhume hume thanks for sharing that Anthony very helpful! Robin

Tina turner said: you're simply the best, better than all the rest Robin
Brilliant vid, as ever, Robin. It really gives a mysterious gypsy (and now I realise it is also naughty) sound to dominant seventh passages. That sliding down a fret thing must be brilliant for Rhythm changes. I will try it. Tres cool 😀🕶😎🎸
PS Good to see the Diminished Rocket (Lick#2) in action:

Whatever happened to the Augmented Chord???😮😯😲So Beautiful well placed.
Hmmmm 💕🎸
Well now Robin.. that was A LESSON I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR 🕺🏻👍🏻💪🏻👌🏻. I have struggled with where to fit them bastards of (if in the right place) awesome chords. I now have more clues. Sadly you keep repeating that godawful phrase... "start simple, practice, then put them into music". GodDamn! I. Want. To Be There Now 😤😝🐣🤦🏻♂️ . Goldstar tut though. Goldstar. ⭐️🌟✨
Peter Hjemdahl take it easy Pete and have fun 🎸❤️Robin
🤣
on E7: did you play Edim7 or Fdim7 ?
ALW ALW Fdim yes and every 3 frets up and down 👌Robin
thanks for the quick answer.
can Edim7 can be a subs for a E7 (b5) ?
ALW ALW no F dim sounds better over E7
Vraiment bien …….Merci beaucoup pour ton travail !
