First, thank you very much! Finally, I found the systematic and step by step way to start playing jazz music with guitar. It is a long journey to find it. I have started with some books those I bought from Amazon and Hal Leonard. However, I made very slow progress. Then, on parallel, I start searching in UA-cam for learning jazz guitar. A lot of information, and I found near all of them, are good and amazing. But the problem is that I need to find one from all available that is suitable for me, who has a slow learning phase. I found you are the best. It is motivated me a lot. Thank you very much. From today, I can stop searching for other methods and focus learning from your channel. My hope, I can make significant progress ❤.
Hi Sandra, I have been playing guitar since 1968 (mostly finger style acoustic and some blues/rock with a bit of Celtic thrown in every now and then) but am a complete beginner when it comes to jazz. I just want to complement you on your lessons. They are clear, articulate and easy to follow. Thank you so very much for putting these lessons out for us all to benefit.
Fantastic and so clear! Most teachers I've had in the past weren't even capable to mix playing with theory at the same time, which is the only way to understand and remember it properly as I see it, and you're grrreat at teaching this! Many thanks from Sweden! Michel :) ❤
Theory is nothing without applying it. Use these chords right away and play a song with them only. Next step Tension Chords. Likw the numbering in the Comping Starter Pack.
Very good lesson! Your explanations and your approach to demonstrating these chords makes total sense. It is so easy to follow. You have a gift for teaching. You tell your students everything they need to know about the lesson and you stay on subject. I wish I would have had your teaching videos 30 years ago! Great job Sandra!

Sandra I can only reiterate what other commenters have said. Jazz is complicated to learn but your lessons open the door to the this wonderful world for thick headed learners like me. thanks!!
Sandra, this is an enriching introduction into the complex subject of Jazz chords. As a beginner, I can follow your explanations very well, how you came up with the chord families, the E string and A string chords, the changes from major to minor and the difference between half diminished and fully diminished chords. This makes sense to me now - for the first time !!! It’s amazing how well you can explain. And your recommendations how to practice these chords are also very helpful, gave me new insights and are now my roadmap for practicing. Oh that's so great to hear, that my system helps you! Make sure to check the Tension Chords video, once you've got the basic 7th chords under your fingers. Then I'd slowly start with chord melody. Enjoy!
Sandra, thank you! I played guitar a lot when I was young, and loved it. You’re too young to remember the ‘60’s, but I played the usual R&R garage band crap (pardon me, please). I haven’t played at all for 40 years, but decided to pick it up again, and try to learn something more sophisticated. I have always loved and wanted to learn jazz chords, but they seemed difficult and elusive. But they’re not-when you explain them. If you, and UA-cam, had existed back then, I could have been playing, and enjoying, elegant chords like Gm7, and Cdim7, 35 years ago. I’m elated that I found you. Keep doing what you do. As you say, “Greetings from Kansas City”.

Thank you for a very helpful lesson, Sandra. The way you showed the movement on frets to form the various chord voicing was fabulous - and intuitive to follow. The simplicity in your explanation made is easy to grasp and retain. Please keep these coming.
You are hands down the best tutor I have discovered in my years of playing - I couldn't recommend any one as strongly as you for anyone wanting to get started in Jazz guitar....
Sandra, I have learned from you more than I thought I could learn from any other instructor. For a long time I have been stretching out my fingers by putting my opposite hand in between them and open them almost to break them. Now I can play anything, I can reach any hard chord easily. And you have become my favorite instructor in this jazz style.
Oh, but that sounds cruel on yourself. It's usually not the finger sketch, but the angle of the wrist, why people don't reach far. Great you solved it and are free to play whatever you like now! 👏
I knew the chords. Now I know how they're formed. Your lessons are adding to my knowledge of the fretboard and how they may be applied. If you continue providing these lessons, in addition to Chord Melody songs, I might yet become a decent jazz guitar player with thanks to you. I'm looking forward to the next leson. Very helpful, Sandra! I am playing lots of the songs you are putting up but I feel like a blind person following a trail because I don't really understand the Jazz theory underlying the chords so this is awesome.
Sandra - Greetings from Florida. Kudos for the outstanding videos you posts. I have always loved Jazz and in high school played my lap steel guitar in our Jazz Band in the middle 1950s. We placed first place in many event with Glen Miller's In the Mood (lead on the steel guitar). After high school, I basically didn't play again until 2011 and since have been relearning the Steel and the Standard Guitar. At age 78 I am still learning. Just playing those chords makes some beautiful sounds coming out of my Godin 5th Ave CW Kingpin II Cognac guitar (Thomastik strings). You are tops!

I am not an aspiring jazz player, but am always looking for "different" sounds (and to improve on reading chord charts). This helps immensly. Thanks again!
Thanks Russell. I'm glad that you look into other genres and playing styles for new impulses. There's so much to be learnt. I have a very eclectic music taste and it influences all my playing. Enjoy experimenting with the new sound, my friend. Btw, I read every single comment 😉

This is a great video. I studied theory in college but the big problem is theory is always taught on piano. Translating to guitar can be tricky. Thank you for this explaination.
Dear Madam. I'm a amateur guitar player who has been playing for many, many years in different styles. Now I've discovered "Jazz" and I understand that it's perfect for comping some of the songs I've composed so far. Some chords are difficult to play 'cause the fingering-memory is different but, important things in life are tough........the guitar - to me - is one of them. Your tutorial is really good , very helpful and useful. I'd appreciate it if you could include four string root chords for the audience, I think they're important, not only to avoid jumping across the fretboard, but also 'cause they provide you a different color to your music. Many thanks in advance Madam.
Gracias, José! I don't know what you mean by "Four String Root Chords". All the chords in this lesson are Root Chords and spread over 4 strings. Keep swinging, my friend!
Dear Madam. What I mean by "Four string root chords", is just the same chords family you've explained in your lesson but using the d string. The root of the chord is on d string. Many thanks.
Thanks... Went through it and played along. I liked the way you went through it logically. I knew the chords already but the way you explained them made the theory and practical applications easier to understand.

Welcome to the jazz ride on my channel 😊 🎶 🎸
Thank you 🙏 for this lesson, it means a lot for most of us who has this endless curiosity to try to understand the mystery, the complexity of this genre! I decided to watch and exercise all your videos! Will take time but I can’t give up!
Thank you, Roberto! ❤️ It's exciting to learn new things. Enjoy the jazz ride on my channel 😊
Ted Greene's Chord Chemistry (most important jazz chord book) talks about noticing "chord synonyms". I noticed the Cmaj7 is also am Em/C chord.
You're a great teacher. Thank you!
Absolutely. These are also called Superimpositions. Play an Em7 arpeggio over the Cmaj7 to get a Cmaj9 overall sound.
Excellent, step by step and easy to follow! Thank you!

Nicely done! You get a lovely tone out of the instrument, and the overall tone is reassuring. I wish I lived closer to get lessons in person, but as it is, thank you for this.

You probably aren't checking comments on this lesson anymore, but just in case, I wanted to say thank you! Very well done and I've printed the pdf for future reference.
Perfect simple breakdown I took notes thank you!!!
This is the basics you definitely need. You can download the PDF chord sheet for free from the link in the info box!

This is a great video. I studied theory in college but the big problem is theory is always taught on piano. Translating to guitar can be tricky. Thank you for this explaination.
Glad it was helpful 😊
Excellent video. Finally, a clear step by step approach that's easy to follow!
Thank you! Enjoy the jazz ride an my channel :-)

Dear Madam.
I'm a amateur guitar player who has been playing for many, many years in different styles. Now I've discovered "Jazz" and I understand that it's
perfect for comping some of the songs I've composed so far.
Some chords are difficult to play 'cause the fingering-memory is different but, important things in life are tough........the guitar - to me - is one of them.
Your tutorial is really good , very helpful and useful. I'd appreciate it if you could include four string root chords for the audience, I think they're
important, not only to avoid jumping across the fretboard, but also 'cause they provide you a different color to your music.
@@joseluismoraleszubeldia6754 Oh, you may want to keep an eye on the channel, bc that one is coming in a few weeks 😊
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Thank you very much.
Complimenti per la chiarezza delle tue lezioni. Greeting from Calabria
Cio, mio amigo Italiano! Hope you're doing well in these troublesome times.
Hi SANDRA your lessons are beautiful and easy.
Keep it up lady.
Thanks, Emmanuel (what a beautiful name). Glad you like it and find the tutorials helpful.
Your approach to teaching is easy to understand and I enjoyed the lesson. Liked and subscribed. Thank you :)
PrettyflyforaFryguy Hello and thank you so much for your kind words and for watching! ❤
Nice lesson.....will be grateful if you upload the Root D string jazz chords
Thanks... Went through it and played along. I liked the way you went through it logically. I knew the chords already but the way you explained them made the theory and practical applications easier to understand.
Thanks! I saw you also watched the Tension chords. Glad you visited them in their tiny little apartments :-D
Explaining the notes helped a lot
I wish I could take lessons from you. This is amazing. Thank you so much for all of your amazing videos!

As an aside, I'm trying to place your accent. What accent is it?
I'm from Austria 🇦🇹. Native German (amAustrian German that is 😁) speaker.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Ah Ha! I suspected as much. I had stayed for some time in Innsbruck many years back. Lovely country Austria! Thank you for answering! :)
