Concerto for Contrabass Trombone/Tuba was composed by Brian Sadler and commissioned by Dr. Eric High. Dr. High is currently an Associate Professor of Music at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin and is very active in the low brass community as a performer and published reviewer. Wanting to give the contrabass trombone more modern literature, he turned to composer Brian Sadler after hearing his “Soundtrack for Trombone and Orchestra” being performed in a recital. The idea of not having a piano accompanist, especially while on tours to multiple colleges, appealed to Dr. High and so he asked Brian if he could write something similar for contrabass trombone. The resulting piece is one that is full of excitement and the modern sound of today’s film soundtracks.
This being Brian’s third piece for solo and digital accompaniment (the other two being for tuba and trombone), he wanted to avoid the shortcomings of his previous ventures by having less tempo changes and a more prominent beat for the soloist to perform with. Ostinato 8th and 16th notes from the strings and groove-heavy drum set easily cut above the backgrounds to help keep the soloist on time. The main themes of the piece are introduced early and go through several variations to help keep things interesting. After a brief solo cadenza, the orchestra returns with one final round and after an unsettling rise, the soloist ends the piece with a final blast.
Anyone who dislikes this must be a trumpet player. Because they are jealous that their horn can never sound this good or powerful. As a tenor trombone player myself, I would love to play one of these horns at least once.
Thank you! Check out the recording by Chuck Plays The Trombone, he nails it.
Hey, im a trumpet and i like it...
Nah this ain’t no concerto, this the boss fight against music itself
This piece came up in a UA-cam mix entitled "children's music" which I think just about perfectly describes the state of composition for low brass these days.
Children's music = BWAAAAHHH!
I'm not sure why, but this piece of music really resonates with me, thank you Brian Sadler.
Well I know what I'm playing if I ever play in competition again
This.
This is the contrabass song ive been looking for
i can play this on tuba
but
I want to do it onn the contrabass
This is a amazing!! Pray to be good enough to play this one day
Love the comment on the last note
An awesome piece.
Thank you!
I could definitely play this on a normal bass except I'd die from oxygen deprivation at the end
Would be a great story though!
Too bad that in movies and whatnot, when songs like this come up, they just do it on bass trombone
The contrabass is almost always left out
The contrabass needs more love
Sometimes cimbasso is used.
we often record cues on contrabasstrombone 🙂
I like "Hold as long as possible without passing out"
Loved it!!!!
just… WOW
I’m a piccolo player but I love this song. My friends say I either play the highest notes possible or the lowest. I love contrabass instruments.
Where is the video only for the accompaniment of this concerto?
This is great, Brian! Ill play this for you anytime. Just let me know when and ill swing by the schoolhouse.
Hey Will! Sounds good to me!
Hallo, I liked your piece. I am studying in college and I won't to play it. But I need piano accompaniment. Where I can get his or orchestra score?
EPIC!
Now this is Epic
Si potrebbe avere lo spartito? Bellissimo!
Is it possible to have permission to buy or own the piece to arrange for band?
wow this is an awesome piece! is there a demo track without solo part available?
greetings and all the best, Berni
Thanks, Berni! There actually is a demo video, I just forgot to make it public! Check it out ua-cam.com/video/gjL9HiydHUU/v-deo.html
@@briansadler5225 thanks so much.
Can I order the whole track without solo part anywhere?
thanks for information, Berni
@@BernhardMichaelPlos Send me a message on my website and we can work something out
i like it just one complaint tho, cadenza?
It’s not in this version because this solo is actually synthesized. Check out the other recording on my channel and you can hear it. Thanks for listening!
there you go:

Please share the song Midi
Accompaniment is too loud in many places, I'm struggling to hear the soloist. And the cadenza was skipped, two entire lines of the music missed out! I was looking forward to hearing the contrabass trombone on its own.
Thanks for the input! I left out the cadenza because this is not actually a real contrabass, it’s all digital. The cadenza wouldn’t have sounded realistic so I left it out. There is a performance of a tuba playing it on my channel so check out that video for the cadenza!

is this for an F contrabass or a Bb?
Bb! I can transpose to F if needed
Can i have that Soundfont/Midi sound for the Contrabass Trombone a lot in music and want that sound
It’s actually an instrument in the Hollywood Brass sample library. I can’t share the individual instruments, sorry
@@briansadler5225ah, it was worth a shot
cuz currently i jjust use either a GM Trombone sound or a GM Tuba sound for the Contrabass and, while the tuba sound works, i needed a better one
found a euphonium sound font, and while down low it sounded great, it would only go down to low G, which sucks cuzz i normally write the contrabass really low(my lowest arrangement has it go down to Pedal E) so it was a no go
oh come one i was looking forward to hearing the cadenza :(
"Concerto for Inception 'BWOOOOOMM' and orchestra"
Got even more in my next piece!
@@briansadler5225 Absolutely looking forward to more!
Where do I buy this?
So is there anyway I can get all the parts for the backing? I have a community orchestra that is willing to back me.
@@austinjordan6365 You can buy the solo at my website briansadler.org. Currently working on an orchestra arrangement!
I was a little disappointed with the recording in a sense that when the orchestra faded and the Cadenza was about to happen so I could hear the trombone better it skipped it

I’m assuming it’s a contrabass trombone playing, doesn’t sound like a tuba, but does anyone know if it’s a Bb or F contrabass Tbone? Judging by its clarity, I’d assume F (just curious)
That is actually a cimbasso sample from the Hollywood Brass library by EastWest. Contrabass Trombone players are hard to come by which is why the piece can also be played by tuba. Thanks for listening!
@@briansadler5225 ah, that would explain how the piece retains that trombone sound, thanks for clarifying
@@briansadler5225 I thought it was a very good midi file! It had a robotic feel to it but at times there would be a really good bit of expression that midi files never make.
Is this written for a BBb Contrabass, CC Contrabass, Eb Contrabass or F contrabass?
No its not, sorry. Only bass clef
@@briansadler5225 found out myself
it is indeed written for instruments in the key of BBb. If it was in F, every thing would be written up a fifth, Eb a fourth, and CC by a second
@@Nonsense_Inc Unless contrabass trombones do the same thing as tubas regarding key. A C tuba still reads the same sheet music as a Bb
Now What is happening
