I definitely know what pedal notes you are talking about? Every time I want to play pedal notes that loud, I wish I could have good sounds and they are annoying sometimes. I'm going to be a junior in this year in august! And I wanted to play the bass trombone ever since when it was my first year of first playing the trombone. I thought a bass trombone was the one with a F attachment. But my junior high director told me that a bass trombone had two triggers and it is a high school instrument. So then when I was in 9th grade I asked my high school band director if I could play it and he said yes! And I was ready for the challenge and I made 1st Band 2nd in All-Region regular band this year and 2nd Band 1st chair in All-Region Jazz I got to try out for All-State regular band and I sadly did not make it because I practiced so hard but some kid from a different school got scared of my sound and he pushed on my bell. And I was mad because he busted my lip when I had an hour to practice before my audition happened and I did not make it because I could not play these pedal notes that they chose and they took to much air. And this only scale was a hard scale called g# harmonic minor and it is like the hardest scale on the harmonic scales!
The brutality and meter changes of the fast sections remind me of the work of John Mackey and Eric Whitacre, and the lyrical portions are lovely! As a trombonist myself, I'd love to perform this, but I don't know anyone who would play it with me :(
This is tremendous!! I forget under what circumstances I discovered this, n why I chose to share this with 3 people, but whatever the reason was, 2 mos later, I am just as taken aback as when I heard this the 1st time. Thank you for sharing your gift.
Violent Shadows is such a beautifully written piece. To me, it follows a lost soul filled with anger, regret, melancholic depression, all in a constant internal battle. The journey is one facing these internal struggles head on finding a deeper pit of pain and scarring, It ends with an acceptance and triumphant grasp on these struggles most face behind closed doors. A true meaning of balance and malice.
So glad I was able to play this in May. Got the highest score on site for the contest in my school. Really fun to play, even with only a piano accompaniment.
What a cool piece! Makes me miss being able to play with other bones. I suspect the audio does not do it justice. Sounds like one of those pieces that would give me goosebumps in person.
Thanks, I'm glad the piece spoke to you! The lyrical sections of the piece certainly gave me chills during this performance, but I think I'm pretty biased.
Nice piece. Back when I was studying bass trombone, one had to, many times, look to tuba literature (yes, I'm old and haven't played in 10 years) to find decent material to perform. Should you do something like this again, might I suggest that you consider a tuba instead of a bass trombone for the lowest voice. In my opinion, the tuba's sonority provides a solid foundation and its harmonic overtones lend themselves so well to the trombone choir's fullness. Yes, the solo bass trombone will still come through, even with the tuba, given its timbre. Food for thought.
I appreciate your suggestion! I’ve had performances of this piece with the accompaniment played by a mixed low brass quintet (with trombones, euphoniums, and tubas) and it worked really well. I’m always open to those kind of substitutions. I’ll definitely consider writing a designated tuba part in the future for something like this though!
@@cehass11 Yes, this piece would work well for the mixed brass you described. I know the purists will frown upon me, but I've always preferred a tuba to a contrabass trombone. The tuba just makes the whole ensemble sound richer, fuller, and bigger. Again, a nice piece you wrote. All I've ever written for trombone ensembles are arrangements.
true story i watched someone perform this and fell absolutely head over heels and then he started working with my marching band and he's actually so awesome i hope he comes back next year
Wonderful composition and so well played by real musicians! Far superior to the rubbish I've just seen elsewhere of sequenced computer-generated trombones!!!
I believe trombone 4 and 5 were both played on bass trombones in this performance. It's technically optional, but those parts definitely work better on bass.
I know I'm late but I hope this helps. It only sounds like it's being played on tenor because the EQ isnt quite right for the room they are playing in. If you listen to quite a few of the soloist's low parts, it's lacking a lot of power when they start to push in the lower register. Something easily fixed in a sound editor or audio file compiler.
with the soloist dropping to pedal A and the 1st trombonist getting up to double D in this piece, and the insane meter changes just makes for an incredibly difficult piece all around
This piece is absolutely perfect in every way! May I ask you what is the the story behind it meaning what was in mind as you wrote this piece cuz this arrangement definitely takes you on a journey and you should feel very accomplished on making this piece. Wonderful!
@@BradyScharer-h1s I really appreciate it! Glad to hear you enjoy the piece. There are official program notes in the description, but the main motivation in writing the piece was to show off my friend who played the solo part, AJ Muusse. AJ is an incredibly talented bass trombonist and can play those technical and aggressive lines to perfection, but one of my favorite parts of his playing is his pure tone and expressive lyricism, so I knew I wanted to incorporate that style of playing as well.
Todd Xu I tried bass from tuba, seemed the same but I just couldn’t handle moving my arm very fast during 16th notes, I mean it helped me with my high register, but on tuba i start sounding like my lips are pressuring notes from G3 and above
The chorale section is so beautiful. The chord progressions are so similar in nature but the voicing changes throughout are ingenious along with the slight differences in the melody line as it goes on. And don’t even get me started on the faster more punctual sections. Is the 5th part written for contrabass trombone?

uhh me and my friends are gong to do this and they told me to watchthis because its very simmiler to the arrangment we are doing...... why did I opt for trombone 5
