This tune was really fun to work up. I enjoyed the challenge of playing it on contra, but it is very playable on most other low brass instruments. Visit the composer's website to pick it up.
Hi Chuck! I have a question. I was wondering what kind of mouthpiece did you use to play this piece and what are its measurements? Eventually I would like to buy a contrabass trombone and play this piece but I want to make sure that I get a big enough mouthpiece for it.
So I’m playing a Greg Black piece with a narrower throat (.316) and custom back-bore (#2) on his standard contra mouthpiece and rim and cup. All my Greg Black mouthpieces for all my horns use a smaller-than-standard throat and back-bore setup like that. Doug Elliot mouthpieces may be the way to go if you want to be flexible and experiment. Sorry to take so long to respond!
Thanks for playing my piece! You sound freaking awesome
This really gave it life! It was great!
Wow! I had never heard or even heard of a contrabass bone till today, this recording gave me a great sense of it's power and voice. It really excels when you are playing lines with longer note values, such a powerful presence that can range from stern and round to violent and commanding. Makes me really want to write for it! I could imagine a duet between this and a tuba being really great, almost like a call and response argument between the two, the tuba trying to be the calm voice of reason, a grounding force, and the contra bone being ready to risk it all for its own ambitions.
You should check out Ben Van Dijk’s UA-cam page for more videos of great contra playing.

Great sound!!
That's a workout!
Yup!
awesome work, dude!
Thanks!
This is the concerto I never knew that I needed in my life. But my life is so much better now that I've heard it. Great stuff!
Bravo!!! Loved it!!!!!
Thanks, Stuart!
I tried this on my Bb/F Tenor Trombone.
Man... I know some tenor players with great low ranges that could pull it off too. Keep practicing and thanks for listening!
I like that sound.
this is absolutely amazing, thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
Magnificent!
Wow, that's great!
I'll have to try this one; it's going to take a looooot of practice though :-)
Love your sound and the change of lighting per movement! What mouthpiece were you using for this?
At that point I was using a custom Greg Black Contra Mouthpiece. These days I'm using a Thein.
When i listen to this on earphones my brain jiggles:P
hopefully in a good way?
@@Chuckplaysthetrombone in a very good way
@@Sid-gk2zf haha... gtn. You should hear me play my new contra live sometime then.
I came here for the cadenza
Cool👌
What kind of contrabass trombone is that? The grip for the left hand looks interesting I haven’t seen something like that before
It’s a 1950s German Contra that’s had some work done on it to make it more playable. That grip is called the Haynor grip that had a brief following in the 80s.
What kind of contra is that?
That is an old German Contra from the 50s made by Küh. I’m thinking about selling it since I have the new Thein. Max Thein actually copied this maker when developing his Kontra.
@@Chuckplaysthetrombone how much would that horn go for? The old contra not the new one lol. Theron sells it for like 18 grand or something ludicrous like that I know but I’ve never even heard of that old German contra before
DO WINNIE THE POO FOR CONTRABASS TROMBONE I BEG!!!
month two of asking
Thanks… but I think Paul Pollard has done a great job of that already. I’m working on a LOTR project now!
tone sounds like a bit of a wet fart
its an F Contrabass, it should have a big trombone sound
albeit, its hard(ish) to play, so i guess thats fine
Lol… this is my favorite comment so far!
This isn't just any fart, this is a fart so powerful it tears a hole in both your ass and the space time continuum, leaving you to be spaghettified from the black hole formed within your rectum.
What kind of contrabass trombone is that?
It’s a 50’s German horn made by Kühl.
Thank you
