Michael Landon never stopped working. He always had yet another TV series up his sleeve. So sorry he did not live to take part in this one too. He left us too soon. RIP

That’s the truth. I believe NBC in my state premiere this and aired it and I watched it. This pilot that he did was fantastic. I was hoping there would be more to it after the pilot. But unfortunately that never happened. You’re right he left us way too soon. I do admire his courage and dedication and positive attitude. He never quit. 14:48

That’s very true. I have to admire Michael Landon‘s attitude though. He didn’t let his cancer get him down. He fought until he quit. When his body said OK that’s enough. I admire his courage. You’re right he left us too soon. he’ll always remain in my heart forever through Highway to Heaven. He left us a legacy. And that’s something I will always treasure for the rest of my life. I’ve always loved it even with Victor French. They made Highway to Heaven what it is. Good wholesome. TV that you never see anymore.

Landon had left NBC due to their treatment of his series Highway to Heaven. In its last season NBC aired the first episode of Highway in September and did not air another episode until March.@@agentkkerryhoagland4801

Actually Landon had taken almost a two year break after Highway to Heaven to spend time with his new family. It proved to be time well-spent.

@@privateprivate1865 If you ever have the opportunity to see it, from the 1st season - Bonanza , - the Cartwright family and especially the beautiful, impetuous, funny, vulnerable and heroic Little Joe - dive in! There's nothing like it today. Yellowstone? Naaah! The Cartwrights actually loved each other. And they were the 1st Western to have comedy episodes - hysterical. Michael Landon and Lirne Greene (pa) had chemistry that made the crew weep when filming some scenes. Hoss and Joe the best comedy duo ever! And you get to see the beginnings of the genius that ML became as writer and director in the later years 🙌.

@@privateprivate1865 If you ever want to check out Bonanza, a channel called "Grinjo" here on UA-cam has a ton of episodes. I started with episode 1, & am now up to episode 146. I don't know what season I'm in though, as I just type in "Bonanza episode 123" or whatever number is next in my lineup, & I always watch the one from the "Grinjo" channel, as there are no commercials, & the video quality is very good, considering Bonanza was made over 50 years ago. It's quite entertaining, even if you don't think you'd like a western type show. Some are funny, some are quite emotional & serious, & they all have a lot of heart in them. Michael Landon was only 22 when he signed on to play the character of Little Joe Cartwright. He really made that character his own. Give it a look sometime, you may be like me & find out you really enjoy it. I never thought I would, but here I am, telling you to check it out. Have a good one, & a Happy New Year to you!!

Exquisite in all ways!!! Michael Landon was blessed and gifted to do exactly what he did in his life's career. I feel so cheated after watching this! It was a wonderful pilot- if Michael Landon had lived & this had been picked up by a network, it would have definitely been another Landon success. I loved every TV series he did. He was an amazing actor, writer, director, & producer. A man of many talents for sure. Eugene "Oogie" Orowitz sure did come a long way in his short 57 years on Earth. It was made for CBS. Landon said on The Tonight Show 5/9/91-- "I told CBS, if I don't get better, this'll be their biggest mistake since buying baseball." Landon would be dead on 7/1/91-- less than two months later.

Yeah, Landon had gone to CBS. He said it on his last public appearance on the Tonight Show. NBC had not shown any support for Highway to Heaven in its last year. After almost thirty years he had left NBC and took his last shot at NBC ON NBC. ( The Tonight Show was on NBC.) He said it in his last public interview. It was made by Michael Landon Productions. His deal was in place with CBS before he died. That is why he made the joke about CBS losing money on baseball.

Hard to say. The production quality was still very much 80s style so that worked against it. 90s started to become a rapidly changing tv-land with cable tv becoming standard in homes. Gen x was becoming the audience to cater to and they wanted more hip upbeat shows without moral lessons embedded in them. I know this was just a pilot and the production quality could've been radically revamped but just pointing it out that it was a massively different landscape with the 90s.

I’ve noticed throughout the years that family’s on the most part don’t really communicate. They say what’s necessary and try their best to avoid the important issues that they should be talking about. Then maybe they would understand each other a little better and begin to really know each other. But instead they live their whole lives hating each other for things that they misunderstood because they never asked them.

The first song by Karen Carpenter is an ironic sad addition to this series because we lost her too soon as well. Everything Michael created and touched was gold. Even if we missed out on a potentially wonderful new series I am so happy to see this and know it's out there to enjoy. RIP

When Micheal Landon’s daughter was in a car accident he prayed to God to let her live and if she did, he would make wholesome tv shows. She lived and he kept his promise.

I didn't know that until I watched the documentary about Michael Landon. He was told she wouldn't make it by the doctors and yet he kept coming to see her for weeks hoping and believing! And she wasn't even his actual daughter but step daughter. Who does that? It was nothing short of a miracle and he fulfilled his promise and then some... He was a saint and an angel of a human being! Before he was even gone, just like the one he played in highway to heaven... I still remember watching it as a child and being mesmerised! He actually gave me hope and faith without even knowing or realising it! RIP Angel Michael 💙

This still holds up. Beautifully done. Wonderful actors. Many of them were unknown. Michael Landon, always did that. He gave actors a break who seldom every got a break. Barney Martin, David Spielberg were probably the only known actors in that Pilot. It's too bad that it didn't go to series. This pilot was a very good piece of work. I am an actor. I would have been happy to have worked for Michael Landon at any time. May He Be Most Happiest In Paradise!

hello. thank you for posting this here. i always wanted 2 see it. this would've been an amazing series had michael lived. it had a great premise. it was also a bit grittier and darker than Bonanza, Highway, and Little House. The Jeff Hayes character would've been a writer that travels around America 'helping' people. its a shame, the pilot ends without the main plot resolved. R.I.P. Michael Landon.

I just came across this on my feed and never realized that this was a pilot to a potential show. Had this been a show, it looks like it would have had a ton of potential and it's a shame Michael Landon got sick because it probably would have been another hit show for him. What I love about watching these Michael Landon shows is how loyal he seems to be to other actors in that if you watch Little House there are some actors in an episode that appeared on Bonanza and if you watched Highway to Heaven there are actors that appeared in a few episodes of Bonanza and Little House and in this pilot there were actors that appeared in Little House and Highway to Heaven. I know it was posted two years ago but thanks for putting this on UA-cam.

You are right. He was loyal to his cast and crew. And much of his CREW followed him from Bonanza to LH to HTH because they were loyal to HIM in return. ❤

I 'm really lucky for the chance to view this pilot of Michael Landon. I sure wish I could see the story of it. But God had a reason, a plan. Who knows, probably he's with Him now and maybe he 's an angel. Nobody knows God plan but for sure Michael has give the world a great legacy. Rest in peace Mr Landon, I'm still like a old lot of people, I'm certain continue to view your wonderful works. 🎉🎉❤

The awful truth is this gentle giant of actor had cancer when he made this brilliant pilot
Pancreatic cancer shows very little to no symptoms until it mastates to the liver.
That is when Michael started to feel unwell.
Even now, it's a death sentence back , and nothing could be done.
God bless this great man who left this mortal planet far too early.

Michael Landon was at his full peak of best health at the time he wrote, filmed and assembled the pilot film in November and December of 1990. The story and characters are somewhat more realistic and edgier and Landon himself has elements of the last 3 characters he played (Bonanza-Joe, Little House-Charles, Highway to Heaven-Jonathan ) in the new character of Jeff Hayes. Landon himself, in his own self is very evident in the character of Jeff. His master technique of acting is certainly very well evoking in this pilot film. His new hairstyles, trimmed-down muscular build and his own clothing ( except the MGM wardrobe prison garb ) and the 90's suburb-settings are more then a sign he did not look back to the past for limitless creativity, but the future. He was working out several weeks at the gym and at MGM, before he filmed this and many assumed this was made when he was sick with cancer, which is a big misconception to many of his fans. Untrue. This Michael Landon Productions/Columbia Pictures Television TV movie was a pilot for a planned series. Filming of the first 12 episodes was set for early June 1991, but tragedy occured some months before that would make this new series impossible. It's a showcase of something that would have been, perhaps his most satisfying role, had he not fell sick some 4 months later in February 1991, with pancreatic cancer, then diagnosed with it in April after sensing he was not well, spanning 5 months through July 1, 1991, to his demise. The US pilot was aired on CBS a few months after he died, on September 20, 1991 and later reran in 1992. Since then on cable television and dish TV. Perhaps a most disturbing scene is in the first act of the film, he is walking down a Los Angeles street at night--and for the first time in his career--he is not accompanied by a sidekick, as with Victor French, Dan Blocker or Merlin Olson. Somewhat detached, seeing him alone in a scene, where most of the time, he's in the presence of another lead actor, as a co-hero. Ten months earlier in January 1990, while on Larry King, he recalled how a "Bonanza" remake would be impossible, since his closet co-stars had all died ( Pernell Roberts excluded, who is still living ), and some of the reality of these tragedies surface in US, in a subtle sense. Michael is there--but he should have his old-co-stars with him at some point of a scene--a modern and somber reminder time has marched on and they have been lost in death. He made an appearance on Entertainment Tonight-the Christmas 1990 edition and sadly the next one would be in April 1991, when he held the press conference at his Malibu home, announcing his grim illness to the world on television. He can never be replaced as the Master of Family Television and a good man, in every sense of the word.
