This is a great example of how UA-cam should work. A free video to show the process linked to a business where I can buy the parts to do it! Thanks Kyle you just earned a customer!
Thanks I really appreciate it!
This is the only video that tells you how to change your cables with door down. Thank You.
Thank you I really appreciate it.
Saved this link 3 years ago when cables went on one garage door. Now using again when the second door cables rusted out. Hope you got lots of business out of this video, since it has helped lots of DIY people.
John thanks brother! That was my goal to help as many people as possible. There are always 2 groups of people those that will just hire someone to do the job for them and then the other group that wants to do it themselves. I wanted to help make it easy and as safe as possible for those diy people. Thanks again for the support!
Thanks for the excellent customer service and really helpful videos. I did go back and ratch it a few times. I ordered the parts. And this 67 year old woman just replaced the torsion shaft, torsion spring and tension cables on a 16 foot door all on her own!! Can't thank you enough. Just go slow and pay attention to the video. Cheers!!!
6 years later and this is still the best DIY garage door spring video out there! Saved me a lot of time and money! Thank you!
Thank you brother
Kyle thanks for your helpful videos. I was able to take my garage door completely apart and put it back together. I made my own cables. I tightened my springs and the door opens great now. I just saved over $200. I plan to replace the bottom panel next year. Thanks again.
good job! glad to help out
One of the cables on our garage door jumped off the drum and the door got twisted. We ended up having to take the entire thing apart, panel by panel, removing the other cable as well in the process. I got all the panels reinstalled but still needed to reconnect the cables. Every video I'd find on replacing the cables wanted you to raise the door first, which is NOT possible to do manually with a 16' door, so I needed another option. Your video gave me the exact info I needed (replacing/reconnecting the cables with the door closed) so thank you for that!
Awesome video. This saved me. I was sure I was going to have to have to pay big $$ for weekend service.
After watching the video I fixed the issue myself in less than 10 minutes. It took me more time to find the 3/8 wrench than to fix the door.
Thank you!
Thanks Ben glad that it helped out!
One of my cables broke and I just ordered a new pair of cables. this will be my weekend project. Excellent video, thank you for taking the time to record and post! Very helpful!
I have watched many other videos but you are the best, to the point and concise. Well done and thank you.
i watched your video 3x. thanks a lot. i'm ready to do this tomorrow morning.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.
Excellent video! After watching it a few times, I got the courage to replace the cable and successfully fix my door. Thank you for such and thorough video.
Charles Nichols thanks!
No Problem! Just one question, I noticed that my door wants to open whenever unlatched. Could it be that the torsion spring is too tight?
Charles Nichols yeah that is what it is
I thought so... thanks again for your assistance!
Excellent video Brother - Clearly explained and easy to follow. My Ddoor was repaired in short order.
Kyle, Many many thanks. Your technique to change the cables is second to none. Safe, easy, and quick. Here in California, just for the labor is 175.00 plus parts. Thanks again Kyle for the great heart of sharing.
thank you. I watched 4 videos and this one was the only one to show how to attach the cable to the spool. mine is in a very tight place with limited vision and light.but I think I can do it now. Just hope nothing gets stolen over night. Thanks.
This was very helpful. I didn't know about the winding rods. That $9 investment made this process INFINITELY easier. Thank you!
Worked like a charm. I made my own bars. The key to safe bars is a good, close fit, in the holes. It helps if you have a lathe nearby.
Great job. Very thorough. Video easy to follow. One of the best I have ever seen!
Excellent video! Concise and very informative. Thank you for doing it!
The best video out there you can see the experience
Much better than vice grips on the bar! Great tip on the gap at the bottom. Thanks.
This is THE best video on how to do this. It's amazing when somebody who knows what they're doing puts it on youtube. Saved 100 dollars. Thanks a ton brother. #BlueCollar
Hi Kyle. Fabulous video! Wow...I watched a video before yours where a DIY guy installed the new cable while the garage door was up. Your method seems much easier and way more professinal. I'll check out your website next. Thank you for posting this.
Excellent video. Other video I found had me unload/reload torsion spring. This procedure was much easier. Only comment would be to ensure that the process is repeated on both sides when there are double torsion springs.
Have to agree. This vid was much easier than that other video.
Thank you for sharing and elaborating on how to set this up properly. Much appreciated!
I’m going to help my father in law replace his garage door cables tomorrow and now I feel fully prepared , thank you for the video!
U t want me to
A job I had thought was out of my range / expertise. 1 hour replacement from start to finish, and save me $300. Thank You!!
thanks glad it helped!!!
I think I am going to try to fix mine. They are quoting me $275 to replace both cables. Thanks for the helpful video.
+Kimmie Kupcakez yeah you will save a ton. It is criminal what some companies are charging. Let us know of we can help out.
I appreciate that. I am a DIYer. I don't mind getting my hands dirty or breaking a nail. I just don't want to spend that much money if I don't have too. I know my limitations though. I still have an appointment scheduled in case I can't fix it tonight.
+Kimmie Kupcakez 👍 let me know how it goes.
Kyle, I ended up doing the cable AND tensioning the torsion spring ... everything is working great. Your videos are super ... I followed your directive in this video and the one on setting the torsion spring!
Awesome Thanks Jeff I am glad it went well. Let me know you if you need anything else and I hope you and your family have good Thanksgiving!
Kyle, I want to wish you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving. Thanks for taking the time to respond to my posts! You produce high quality videos.
Great job... I finished in last than 45 mins.. works like new..Thanks again for this video
Thanks bro.. savedmy bacon.. from NZ
Very clear video and explanation thanks
excellent video Kyle, my cable came off the drum and this video was so helpful. thanks again
You always make stuff easy man. Thanks for the videos
Thanks brother, I appreciate the feedback and glad it helped out
Very Good and easy to understand video!! Saved my day!!
Your video is EXACTLY what I needed -- Thanks! G-R-E-A-T V-I-D-E-O
I have been procrastinating replacing my daughters garage door cables as she has a solid wood double wide garage door and all of the videos I have watched show either the garage door closed and working from the sides, which can't happen with her door because of shelving. The others that I have seen have you release all the tension from the springs, which I hate to do as it takes almost 40 - Quarter turns of the springs to get the door balanced.
2busy2P brother i am glad it could help out.
Great video. I feel very comfortable with this process now. Thank you.
thanks glad it helped out
Yes, good video, but that damn bar at the bottom of the video was in the way.....
Cable just broke but after watching your video, I am more confident I can replace the snapped cables.
very educative .Thank you Regards
thanks for makeing this video, got it done the first try, very easy.
I just used this exact video to change out the two cables on my door. My door
had this exact set up of hardware. One of the cables rusted at the bottom and broke. It’s important to unwind the tension on the springs as he does. I happened to have the winding rods. It was about a half hour job for two cables.
Excellent Video. Thank you for Sharing.
Hey Kyle, great video exactly what i was looking for. Excellent explanation of the cable operation. I am going to place an order of these cables, exactly for the reason you described of where the cables rub each other in the last two feet of the door opening and it is very frustrating, considering it is a brand new clopay door with ez set torsion spring and as you know the drums on those are small but very wide so the cables almost starts to wrap around one another right before the door is open all the way.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I backed into my door and knocked it off the tracks. I got it back on the tracks, but one of the torsion cables came loose. I was racking my brain, trying to figure out how to get it back on the drum. This video was just what I needed. Thanks!
+Eric Martinez No problem, I am glad it helped out. Let us know if you ever need any parts for your door in the future.
Thanks, there is good safe help here.
Thank's for the video !
Wonderful Video, saved me a lot
Thank you so much, this were a great learning experience for me,and no one explain it better !!!!!
GREAT VIDEO !
hey thanks Kyle, this video was very helpful to me, once again thank you
Thank you sir, you saved me money. Really appreciate it.
my garage door has the wire cable hanging down the front side and not like yours (down the backside). And the cable came off of both side of my garage door. Should I wind my cable like yours? - winding it down the back side?
never mind - for some reason my spring tension goes the opposite way than yours.
Very nice video Kyle. Thanks for sharing.....
Great video
Great video
I got the 3/32 cable when I bought springs bearings and rollers from you place. the rt side cable came off the spool-drum and mildly kinked. is it ok to use no fraying. Your videos are very educative. Thank you regards .sesha chary
Yes it should be fine as long as there's not any phrase usually the kink will work its way out once tension is put on it
I guess if I was gonna do short cuts I'd clamp the door up and used a vise grips on the torque tube (there should only be about 1 turn or less spring turns on it with the door up) and do each side one at time. If you're lucky and your new cables are the correct length, you won't have to adjust anything. Otherwise you'll have to adjust the drums.
I guess your way automatically corrects for the cable variations, so I guess I see the advantage of this method.
Wery good instruction other one show loosen the whole spring tension is more work.Thank you.
Great video. Thanks so much for this upload
Thanks Shawn!
Thank you so much ,you are really life saving
Excellent!!!!
Thank you very good video very helpful
Kyle my cables came unwound and it looks like the center spring has no tension. Do I install the cables with the door close and then re-tension the main center spring?
Excellent video!
Thanks!
Okay I did this and everything went well, but now when my door is opened all the way there is cable slack when opened. The cable on 1 side keeps falling off the track. I've unwound the cable and redid it several times but I feel I'm missing something. When the door is closing I have to make sure the cable is staying on the roller. Please help!
very very very helpful.........thanks
Gr8 video thankyou god bless you brother
Very straight forward video. good instructions. thank you .
Epic Garage Door Torsion Cables
great video, love it , thanks a lot
Thank you
what's the procedure to install when they are none?
Any chance of the door not leveling? I saw your video on leveling a door and can reference that if needed. Thank you!
Great job! Thanks.
I'm thinking of doing a high lift conversion on my door. Do I have to change the spring using the same door? I know it's got to lift higher. If so, how do I calculate a new spring? I'm going for a 10-12" lift. Thanks for your help.
Informative. Thank you.
I got ahead of myself when replacing the rollers, and I mistakenly removed the red screws from the bottom door bracket. (They were not red on my door like they are in other videos.) Luckily the cables onle pulled up the bracket about 4 inches. So I used a C-clamp to make sure it doesn't move any further or fly off from the tension. So what do I do now? How do I reattach the bracket and cable safely. I do not have the winding bars to secure the main coil. What can I use instead to secure the coil?
You really need some winding bars to back wind the springs. You can get some 1/2" cold rolled steel bars to use for a set.
Hello Kyle. Very good video. When a torsion spring breaks can the one or both torsion cables break as well? Thanks
Great Video. Thanks for uploading.
Though i wanted to know what would happen if the rod holding the spring tension slips off the groove accidentally..... What is the risk?
what size cable did you used
excellent vid..thanks
Good video, and I have question,I replace springs but after replacement I check everything but my door won't open manually, only couple inch, pleas what can be wrong, tnx
Good info on this video, what I was looking for, but the banner hides part of what you're doing.
Great video, common sense utilization.
+Ross Brown Thanks!
What size are those bars you used to hold the spring ? Diameter?
Hello, my garage door torsion springs are located at the back close to door opener, how long cable should I buy ? thanks
Thanks Maybe if you get rid of the Banner at the bottom we can see better
quick question: What are the cables called that are connected to the garage door handle that allows you to manually open it from the outside?
Thanks very helpful
EXCELLENT!!! thanks!
So which spring is adjusted for up and down?
are all cables the same gauge and length say for a 150lb door?
Amen to the above! That banner could have been almost anywhere else and not blocked the operation.
Excellent!
+Michael Prata Thanks
How much is the cost for replace the spring.
It's great that it ships out same day before 11am, but what is the typical shipping time on the $9.99 flat rate shipping?
Dane Snyder 2-3 days
I replaced the single spring on my 7 x9 door and replaced the cables and they keep coming unwound? what is the problem? RSVP
So you only need to hold the tension of one spring with the winding bar and not both springs?
Just one as long as you have the set keys tightened to the torsion shaft. By doing that it connects everything together and then winding bar is holding all the tension.
Thank You for this well detailed Video. It was Very Helpful. thumbs up and Subscribing . :) Have a Blessed Day.
Nancy Mata thanks I am glad it helped out!
How long are these cables? I watched another video and he said 8’6”. I’m looking at Home Depot and their’s are 8’0”
Thank you!!!
