Llevaba 5 horas intentando arreglar mi portón sin éxito, ví su video y en 10 minutos quedó arreglado, thank you very much for your video saludos desde México!
After (a lot) more perseverance I was able to pry off the old cables. I did this after verifying the loops on the new cables would fit over the knob on the bottom bracket. I think what happens is the loop elongates over time and mine just fit much tighter which is probably a good thing. I think the only additional tip I'd make is to put a bend in the cable where it comes out of the wheel and wraps around, so it conforms better without a little hump there. Otherwise, I think this was best video. Trying to change the cables with the door down causes the bottom brackets to be jammmed near the floor with little access to get the cables off the hub (in my case). Thanks for the video.
That's great news you got it off! And also, great tip. People will read this and gain something from it. Also, you don't want to try and take cables off when the door is down. That's when the tension is applied and very dangerous. Do it with the door open. Tension is reduced GREATLY. Allowing you to do the cable change without fighting spring tension. Thanks for watching my video Dan! 👍🏼
@@garagedoorgenius If the cables have snapped and are already out, would it make sense to install the new cables with the door down? My door is super heavy to lift as it is now. This just happened to me this morning.
That was brilliant thanks mate. I had a look at a few others but thought yours explained it best . Got me roller door working again for the cost of sone eBay cables instead of been ripped for over $300 for a local bloke to do it . Cheers for that :)

Thanks so much for the video, I have to install a new bottom seal on a Overhead Garage door brand. I have to remove the bracket the cable loop is on so I'm going to follow your video instructions. You're welcome and thank you for watching the video! I also appreciate the donation. That is super nice of you. 🙏 As long as you keep one cable on, you'll be fine. Replacing one at a time. We were able to take it off and re-wire after watching your video. Now the garage door is working again! XD thank you!!
Great video brother. You have explained it in such a way that you've inspired me to give it a go. Plus showing the before and after really helpled. God bless you.
Great video thank you! I replaced one cable and now the other one is not guitar-string-tight when the door is down - I'm planning to replace the other cable but I'm wondering if I need to adjust the drum so that they are both extremely tight or should I adjust them both to be sort of tight but not guitar-string-tight, please let me know thanks again!
Thank you for the video. I'm going to practice this on my spare garage door. Unfortunately, I had to just pay over $1000 for two springs and cables. Ugh, I just had surgery, so I'm unable to do the work myself. Of course, I have surgery, and one of my springs snaps, and it frayed one of the cables. Oh well. The company I used quoted my around $500 after tax to replace the springs. Even at that price, they're making money. The service tech shows up, and asked if his office quoted me over the phone. He even asked the exact quoted amount. I told him that they had quoted me, and that's when he shook his head. He pulls out the actual price of the springs with the cables, and wouldn't ya know, it was magically double the price!! Then, they took all of the hardware for the drum bearings off, and tried to increase the sale by including bearings, new wheels, etc. They totaled it up and it was dang near $2000. I feel violated. lol, not really, but I am definitely not happy. These big companies are ripping people off. After watching videos like this, I want to start my own business repairing garage door springs, cables, etc. I'm all for people making money. However, I am not all for people being screwed over by these install/repair companies. I can only imagine some little old lady that can barely afford to live in this economy, and having something like this happen. It's just crazy.
@@joootooobboosheet2486 I'm so sorry. This comment is sad. I understand you have to make money but that's insane. Did the company have green in their logo and start with P? @@garagedoorgenius well, I decided to spend $120 US and called the garage door guy as my hands are a bit weak and I need a 2nd man to lift up the heavy door
With my garage door, the cable already snapped at the knob, and the garage door was in the down position. So, is it safe to manually open the garage door as per your video and install the new cable? Other instructional videos say you have to deal with the spring torsion bar first. Thanks for your help, and great video.
Hello! Thanks for the comment. If you can wiggle the door fully open, then use this video. ua-cam.com/video/LykX6kQXPGo/v-deo.html And actually, this video you currently watched should work for changing 1 cable. FYI, I recommend changing both cables.
I learned the hard way but first I found out you can't put too much tension on the cable, I gave it a 360 revolution of tension and my door didn't want to stay down haha, then they fail to mention that one side of the wheel where you roll the cable on is clockwise and the other side is counter clockwise haha. So I had to load the cables on the wheels 3 separate times both sides for a total of 6 haha, but I can say now I know how to replace cables in garage doors. But thanks for the video at least it gave me a blueprint general idea of how to do it
@@velmabellerose7704 The best way to replace that cable was like the video, when the door is open but I still needed a little more tension so I rotated it a full 360° and it was just right
Great video, thanks a lot it'll save a lot of us a lot of money, I have the garage door guys out they want $500 to replace the springs and $100 more for the cables
Same here. $550 for the springd, and another $125 for the cables. Then we noticed cracked hinges. Aaaand he wanted to replace those at $25ea. I got him down to $350 for the springs and let him do it since it wouldn't open and we needed it. Then I bought heavy duty cables, hinges, and rollers for $110 on Amazon. Came out way ahead.
Good video though in my case i dont need to replace the cables, problem i have is when the door is down one side of the cable is loose has much slack, is this where i have to loosen the drum square screws & rotate the drum that would tighten up the cable then tighten the bolts? I would guess the proceedure would be different being that there would be much tension from springs eould have to use visegrips on the rod doesn't spin when loosing the drum screws?
If it were me, I'd follow this video. Just start fresh setting the cables. Only part that will be different in your case than from the video, is the spring. You're spring is already wound up. So just stick a rod in the end cone, loosen set screws, then rest the rod/winding bar against the top panel. Then follow the steps getting the cables squared away. ua-cam.com/video/uPyK_85TfoQ/v-deo.htmlsi=3Is6ewwYgUaEzObn

Thank you for the awesome video that was very helpful for me with replacing the cables on my garage door. Note that I did receive poor cables from the first company I used on Amazon. The second set worked perfectly
Thanks, hopefully I can manage with garage door shut, mine is stuck shut, cable loop at the bottom rusted through and popped off when I shut it the other day or could there be another issue I cannot see that is causing it to not open, the door when I shut it somehow is now uneven, closes completely on the side loop broke but other side is almost a inch from closing but everything is in the tracks.
This was helpful, thank you . I was able to put cable back on track, and door lowered fine. But then, when I raised it, the cable came back off track, any idea why?
@@curtobrien1020 yessir. That's why the door is heavy AF and the cable comes off. Need to get a spring replacement. If there's 2 springs, I recommend changing both.
So I have to replace my two bottom panels and just wanted to know if I bring the garage door up like how you have it and remove the wire as seen, will it chop my fingers, etc… off since the tension spring is still hot? Thanks.
just wondering for single car garage, will it work if I don't install the spring nor cable since I don't have enough head room? I know the door won't stay but I only use the garage for storage and I can use something to lock the door into position once opened.
Great video. I do have a question, tho. My garage door doesn't open. The cable is gone. Is that the reason it doesn't open? What do you recommend I should do?
No cables is definitely the reason your door isn't opening. I would get the door height. Order a pair of cables from Amazon. Then follow this video. ua-cam.com/video/uPyK_85TfoQ/v-deo.htmlsi=MqDzvaB1ez7WF4xe
After wrapping around the cable I am short 5 inches to get loop to end of the door. When I push spring is getting tension. Not sure if I can force to reach the door
Thank you very much for the demonstration! My cable came off from one side. I've ordered a pair from Amazon. Just one quick question, when do I have to unload and reload the spring? In your other video, you did that and mentioned it was dangerous. But from this video, it seems like we can replace the cable without touching the spring system?
If you follow this video you won't have to mess with spring tension. 👍🏼 My other video shows how to reset cables and wind the spring. Yes, it can be dangerous, but take your time. You would have to purchase some spring winding rods from Amazon to do that.
@@garagedoorgenius , wow, I did't expect to get your reply so quickly. :) I will follow the instructions in this one. don't want to touch the dangerous stuff. Thank you bro. So glad find your channel! Great job!
I read the 7ft high door takes a 102" cable for torsion spring style. But google shows mixed info. Its confused with the older side mount stretch springs.
Thanks for the video! Any suggestions for the following issue? - I have been able to follow this step by step, I get the cables looped around and lined up, but then once I lower the garage one or both will unwind from the drum. Thank you for your help!
Sounds like you need some spring tension my friend. That is a little more involving DIY. In your case I would just start over with spring tension and setting the cables.
Ive seen other videos where they start the cable on the first groove with the garage door down...would that work as well? Pretty tight area to work with in my garage with the door up
It would work, but be more difficult because you're dealing with full tension from the springs. Also, puts the risk factor up quite a bit. Just be careful my guy. 👍🏼
I just finished replacing both of the cables on my 7 foot tall garage door and I have a question. I followed your procedure in this video. I tightened the torsion spring with 31 quarter turns, but, the garage door seems heavy relative to the help from the cables and torsion spring. I believe that you wound only 30 quarter turns and your door seemed to go up pretty easily. How can I fix this? Tighten the torsion spring some more? If so, how much more? Perhaps my springs have lost their strength?
Thanks@@garagedoorgenius I will give it 2 more quarters. It's very hairy tightening the torsion spring. But, I have the right tools - 17.2" winding rods. I'm a retired s/w engineer and so I have nerd-muscles (on the weak side). Wish me luck!
Thanks for sharing. I'm very paranoid, so my question is when the garage door is up, the torsion spring is back to its normal state so I shouldn't worry about it at all, correct? Thanks
When the door is open, it has just enough tension to keep the cables taunt around the drums. When a door is down the spring has FULL power. So, yes. It's much safer dealing with the spring when the door is open. Just for safety purposes, clamp 2 pairs of vise grips per side, under a roller. That way the door doesn't roll downward.

@@garagedoorgenius I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but when there is a large amount of potential energy stored in a device (torsion spring), I tend to wean away from the repair. I'll do every type of repair in a house expect gas piping. haha. Thanks again!!!

Wow, this is so much easier than I thought it was going to be.
It's not too terrible. Good job my guy! 👊🏼💯

HI, I got one of the tensioner cables snapped, and now i bought the new tensioner cable, please let me know if I have to just open the door and put the cable as you have shown in the video or do I have to reset the coil also for that side also? is the coil still having tension in it or it get released once the wire got broken?
Thanks so much for the video, I have to install a new bottom seal on a Overhead Garage door brand. I have to remove the bracket the cable loop is on so I'm going to follow your video instructions. I always thought removing the cable that it would be under the spring tension but I guess it isn't by watching your video. Thanks again
You're welcome and thank you for watching the video! I also appreciate the donation. That is super nice of you. 🙏
As long as you keep one cable on, you'll be fine. Replacing one at a time. Don't take both off at the same time because you will lose all the spring tension.
When the door is open there is still tension on the spring. Just not the full amount like if the door was closed.
You got this Gregory! 👍🏼👊🏼🤘🏻

@@royalbryson1 hey, you're welcome.
Let me ask. Does the door stay open when you raise it? Or does it kinda drift down?
I ran a business in Austin and was very successful without ripping people off. I believe in karma. I agree. This economy has gone to shit. And I don't see and end in sight. Heal up my friend and good 🤞🏼.

And actually, this video you currently watched should work for changing 1 cable.
But thanks for the video at least it gave me a blueprint general idea of how to do it
Anything that you haven't done before is a learning experience for sure. Good job sticking with it and figuring it out. 👍🏼🙏
I didn’t know about the counterclockwise and clockwise. Could that be the reason my door doesn’t want to stay up now?
@@velmabellerose7704 The best way to replace that cable was like the video, when the door is open but I still needed a little more tension so I rotated it a full 360° and it was just right

I'll have a new video out this weekend on the same thing but done a little different.

Great video. I do have a question, tho. My garage door doesn't open. The cable is gone. Is that the reason it doesn't open? What do you recommend I should do?
No cables is definitely the reason your door isn't opening.

Not sure if I can force to reach the door
Yes, force it up to reach the hoop. 👍🏼
My other video shows how to reset cables and wind the spring. Yes, it can be dangerous, but take your time. You would have to purchase some spring winding rods from Amazon to do that.

Is there a way to tighten the coil once you’ve wrapped the cable around the spool?
Hi, what happens when a garage door spring breaks? Does the garage door come crashing down? Thanks for answering. Best regards, Nancy
If the door is open and you pull the disconnect rope on the opener, yes. It'll drop like a rock. Be careful!
I read the 7ft high door takes a 102" cable for torsion spring style. But google shows mixed info. Its confused with the older side mount stretch springs.
I can measure a set and get back to ya tomorrow.
Absolutely fantastic thanks Mate!
Glad to help! 👍🏼. I appreciate the awesome feedback.
Awesome video thank you sir, for taking the time to make this
You're welcome!
Amazing !!!! Loved the way you explaining so good with so details thanks so much

Add a couple more quarters. It'll be fine and see if that improves how it feels.
Great thanks for the info Bro watching from Jamaica 🇯🇲
Hell yeah! Thanks for watching.
Does the drum have to be close to the bearing plate all the time
I mean, it should be. However that won't prevent the door from working. The cable may rub the side of the door.
THANK FOR THE VIDEOS. MY QUESTION IS. WHERE DO YOU GET THE 20FT PIPE WHERE THE TORSION SPRING GOES? MY GOT BENT AND NEWS A NEW ONE. Thanks
A local garage door company should be able to sell you one. Home Depot or Lowe's unfortunately don't sell them.
