While I don't agree with the Disney-hate, if it's driving support for smaller film makers then it's having a positive outcome on the overall cinema ecosystem! It's forcing some equalizing and redistribution of box office earnings.
So “conservative audiences” trying to stick it to Disney are still a thing, except for the results for’ Inside Out 2’ and ‘Transformers’. So then, not a thing. Stop trying to make Fetch happen. 🙄
Yeah, I think it's a dead horse argument. Good movies should do well. I think Transformers One and The Wild Robot are 10 out of 10, but not everyone has to agree with me, and September movies always have less attention than Summer movies. ❤
Yeah that whole argument is pretty much a nonissue at this point, there were a couple of isolated instances in the last couple of years namely Minions 2 and Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken had some right-wingers trying to hype them up in opposition to Disney, even though the latter flopped, but that whole fad has largely faded, and I don't see any evidence that being a driving force behind The Wild Robot's success, sounds like a reach
Surprised you didn’t mention Lupita N’yongo having two number one films this year. For all of the Hollywood misses that have come and gone and once bankable talent that in many cases continues to stumble that is a truly notable accomplishment!

Grace. Murphy infers that the Menendez brothers were in an incestuous relationship which is why the brothers spoke out against the series. I think a subject has every right to raise their concerns and criticism of bad faith storytelling. 🤦🏼♂️
your conservative angle about animation is weird because that didn't hurt Inside Out 2 at all. And doesn't make sense for Transformers One despite its great word of mouth.
I am beyond happy for The Wild Robot. I've seen it three times already and it's a phenomenal movie with some gorgeous artistry and visuals, lovable characters and a top notch score. Couldn't happened to a better film and I hope it gets that Oscar. My only thing that I would like to make clear is that as a Disney stan I did not went to see this to stick it against them at all, and I'm also not a conservative.
I agree they need to calm down. Any studio is capable of making an animated film on par if not better than Disney films. There is no secret group supporting a film to go against Disney. Disney isn't that hype for that
The Mendez brothers case is fascinating when it comes to generational thoughts on the case. I and my mom got in a debate last night on it. Her believing that they were spoil brats who harmed their parents for money while I brought up the SA and the trauma and sympathize with them. She was disgusted that they even got a Netflix series.
Just finished the Menéndez series today. Wow! I wish this show had 5 more episodes. Every performance was dynamite. The episode where the attorney is interviewing Erik is Emmy worthy. The district attorney’s closing argument in the last episode was so enthralling. Just wow! Loved it!
Adams helmet of hair in this movie haunts my dreams. . ... That is the WORST haircut I’ve ever seen.. ... there is even a haircut called “the Caesar cut”... that flop on his head is not it.
Ya know, I really love when Grace does her live commercials in her show. It reminds me of the old days when Groucho would step away for a minute to pitch Pennzoil or Purina
What’s with Grace’s insane theory now for the third time in a month or so now that Elizabeth Olsen is failing in her career, didn’t she have two indie premieres in the past few weeks earning universal praise? Id say her priority is on fulfilling work worthy of her time than with marvel sucking the soul out of her being an A-list star.
Can’t believe Grace said people didn’t go see Megalopolis because Coppola used canceled actors, the average person couldn’t name anyone in the cast much less someone who was cancelled.
My grandmother went to see Megalopolis this weekend - we agreed it was the worst movie we’ve ever seen. Need I say more on that movie. But, on the bright side, my grandmother and I went to see The Wild Robot twice in one weekend! We loved it. I cried a few times, and I mostly laughed through both the IMAX screening and the normal screening. IMAX had a quarter full of a screen due to a Thursday preview being a school day, but on opening day on Friday, there was almost a full screen with kids included. We all clapped at the end of the movie meaning that everyone, myself included, loved the movie. Definitely going to see only this movie again as many times as I like and bring even more tissues in case I cry 😭 again.
The worst movie I ever saw was The World According to Garp. I've avoided bad movies, but the hook there was it had Robin Williams at his height and it was on cable. Maybe Megalopolis will be a challenge to the Robin Williams movie.
Adam Driver needs to take a step back I think. He has gone with all the big and legendary directors that have snapped him up and it has not paid off once I don’t think. I think he needs to look at the script and story rather than just the prestigious director.
I had nooooo idea that Bolt was meant to be a film called American Dog.🤯 I just went down a radioactive rabbit hole, and have concluded that I would’ve likely loved Sanders’ original idea. 😭🙌
I truly believe the main reason Deadpool and Wolverine did so well is that it's basically the Deadpool equivalent of Spiderman No Way Home where everyone knew it was going to be superhero cameo galore. That taps into your nostalgia no less! While I do not believe Joker 2 is going to do anywhere near as good as the original because it seems pretty much impossible now for any solo superhero movie to come close making a billion without it being some sort of massive team up movie.
Risky auteur films? No, unless the budget is tiny. That era of Hollywood is gone and movies are competing with so much which they cannot afford to demand our attention unless you're a strong name like Nolan or Cameron
As has been said about other movies, Megalopolis is a film no one asked for. It may have its artistic merits, but those audience scores do not bode well for digital or streaming revenue. And that budget! I disagree that the mid-range movie is dead. Look at Alien Romulus, It Ends With Us, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and now the Wild Robot. All films with budgets under $100 million and all going to make money, especially once digital is added in. Compelling stories, good writing and directing, and keeping the costs down are the key (hello, back-end participation). Heck, even Civil War wound up making some cash. It can be done.
Bettlejuice Bettlejuice is doing well internationally. The 1st film only made $10m (TEN). That's only $22m even adjusted! To be over $130m and still grossing well each week is HUGE, over 6 times the original already. Over double Jenna Ortega's previous highest grosser, etc.
Also I'm proud that I called it that Alien Romulus ended up being reverse Twisters 2. People thought the movie was going to be a massive flop that would be lucky to break $225 million. I was a naysayer because I saw it's international BO percentage was the complete opposite to Twisters 2 and it can very much end up matching if not surpassing it. Hasn't officially surpasses it yet, but definitely matched it.
It was when it originally released in ‘68. It’s re-release and vhs eventually helped it become profitable. It had mixed reviews when it originally came out in 1968.
@@ssshar2176 I wouldn’t call it a flop. 2001 didn’t need a vhs-release to turn profitable. The movie was an expensive movie, but only narrowly didn’t make its money back upon first theatrical release; its first theatrical re-release in 1971 already turned it profitable and further re-releases made it very profitable.
In the movie “Megalopolis,” there’s a unique audience interaction scene involving Adam Driver’s character at a press conference. As cameras flash, Driver appears on screen silently, waiting for a question. At this moment, someone in the cinema delivers a scripted line to Driver’s character, and he responds. Some cinemas will have staff members or volunteers use a microphone to deliver the line. However, if your cinema hasn’t organized this, the scene will still proceed. The line is actually pre-recorded, and the live performer simply lip-syncs while standing at the microphone. So, even if no one performs live, you’ll still hear the line. Midway through the film, the screen size will shrink significantly. Adam Driver will be shown sitting at a press conference table with cameras flashing, waiting for a question. Then, it’s your time to shine!
It's ridiculous making movies with these kind of budgets. They need to humble themselves and make better movies with less money. Horror movies kill because they're cheap yet entertaining.
I’m amazed that after years and years of doing movie math, Grace is still able to have so much to talk about it. I really enjoyed how this entire video was put together and presented. Lots of great insights. Great job this week, Grace!

A team that couldn't win one game in 16 should have been kicked out of the conference, and its position put up for bid. Their last game Dec 28 was against the Green Bay Packers who finished 6W-10L. If their existence was on the line, they could have brought it for that one game when their opponent didn't even need a win and was probably taking it easy to avoid injuries.

I'm not going to see _Reagan,_ the Matt Walsh mocumentary of D.E.I., _God's Not Dead_ or _Vindicating..._ but I have an opinion about them.
@@sandal_thong8631 That is not the same thing at all
@@Ethos10128 expressing opinions on movies you don't want to watch? ...alright
Typical Grace.
While I don't agree with the Disney-hate, if it's driving support for smaller film makers then it's having a positive outcome on the overall cinema ecosystem! It's forcing some equalizing and redistribution of box office earnings.
Yup. I watch good movies in general. It doesn't matter which company is producing. If it's bad, it's bad, and if it's good, it's good. ❤
Copolla served huge ego and arrogance and in return received a miniscule opening box office and a D+ Cinemascore for his movie 👀👀👀👀
That’s the main reason I didn’t go see Megalopolis. Coppola acts like such a jerk, I lost all interest in the film.
We have to seperate the artist from the man
So “conservative audiences” trying to stick it to Disney are still a thing, except for the results for’ Inside Out 2’ and ‘Transformers’.
They had no problem with Inside Out 2, it was precisely the kind of Disney they would like to see so they rewarded it by seeing it.
It’s very much a real thing. 😂 it’s all over movie web on FB still, or Insta.
It’s a loud minority on Facebook. 90% of the population sees what movie looks interesting to them or has hype around it. Simple as that lol
I work in pediatrics and a bunch of my patients were telling me they were waiting for the wild robot like two months ago😂
Am so happy the wild robot is doing well I saw it yesterday it's such beautiful movie
I really hope that the movie becomes commercially successful because there’s still 2 more books to be adapted and I really want a sequel ASAP!
The trailer for Megalopolis looked like a pet project born from a fever dream a group of theatre kids had
Surprised you didn’t mention Lupita N’yongo having two number one films this year. For all of the Hollywood misses that have come and gone and once bankable talent that in many cases continues to stumble that is a truly notable accomplishment!
Went to Epcot... It was wonderful! Had a great time! Loved it. Glad to be able to move around without rubbing shoulders with everyone.
Interesting that you criticize Adam Drivers movie choices, his last three films have been with Coppola, Michael Mann and Ridley Scott, what actor wouldn't have taken those films
One who read the script...
@@ICU1337 The Last Duel's script was *amazing* , Ferrari was backed by Neon aka. a prestigious film distributor in the same vein as A24, & Megalopolis was a passion project for none other than Francis Ford Coppola.
I can totally understand why an actor looking to brand him/herself as a serious performer woul choose to network with these entities.
Or a nolan movie or inaritu or cauron or del torro or veleneuve. Or any director in the prime of his career
@@a7000zo listen, I'll let you cope with your _passion project_ list of The Last Duel, House of Gucci, 65, Ferrari and now this one Megalopolis.
Either these were good scripts with a bad actor or they were bad scripts with a good actor. I'll leave it with you because I already know my answer. And usually, usually, you take a passion project after you've already established yourself. And Kylo Ren wasnt a good bullet point on the resume...
@@ICU1337 65 is the only outlier in that list in my opinion. I still can't wrap my head around why Driver chose to star in it.
Grace. Murphy infers that the Menendez brothers were in an incestuous relationship which is why the brothers spoke out against the series. I think a subject has every right to raise their concerns and criticism of bad faith storytelling. 🤦🏼♂️
That part was told by Nathan Lane's character during a theory-forming/gossip tirade. That was never inferred as an actual fact.
your conservative angle about animation is weird because that didn't hurt Inside Out 2 at all.
Disney isn't that hype for that
John Stewart is DC comics first black superhero; that is huge to the black community IMO. If Aaron takes the role or not; he is aware of this.
I’m so glad that the wild robot did good I was a little scared it wouldn’t but yayy🎉it did I’m going to be seeing it this weekend 😊
Thank God I am going to see Joker 2 early screening tomorrow instead of Megalopolis. Going to see Coppola's movie later on VOD.
PFFF Haha Jojer 2 is trash, Megalopolis will have cult status. Bad choice.
@@mahmudmurad4655Even if Joker 2 is trash it will probably get a cult following too
@@mahmudmurad4655have you even seen the movie yet or do you just like to yap
Just finished the Menéndez series today. Wow! I wish this show had 5 more episodes. Every performance was dynamite. The episode where the attorney is interviewing Erik is Emmy worthy. The district attorney’s closing argument in the last episode was so enthralling. Just wow! Loved it!
Megalopolis didn't see much advertising from what I saw. I think they were counting on word of mouth... and, well....
Other than Grace talking about it I did not know anything about the movie.
well, according to Amazon, about 70% of the audience for Rings of Power comes from outside the U.S. So maybe thats enough for them to do season 3
Happy for The Wild Robot! Definitely well deserved.
I think she says that about most women. And James Gunn. According to Grace, that guy is always failing.
120 million of one's own money is INSANE!
Just for the movie to slop too that gotta hurt
I respect that more than Disney spending $280 on a tv show everyone hated. Recouping $120 will be easy and will have cult following.
Pure evil.
The Wild Robot was amazing!! 100% recommend seeing it in theaters
Can’t believe Grace said people didn’t go see Megalopolis because Coppola used canceled actors, the average person couldn’t name anyone in the cast much less someone who was cancelled.
Always a lot of cope and projection.
Forget it, Grace is rolling....and projecting. She lives in such a bubble or highrise tower.
@@BishopBrown-ng2nsshe’s wierd
I loved The Substance. And also, Elizabeth Olsen’s His Three Daughters is also fantastic
The Wild Robot deserves ALL the success AND the Best Animation Oscar
Not at all, Miyazaki should sue.
The report, the last duel and annette are great movies, while megalopolis and white noise are flaw but interesting
Rings of Power is showing commercials. That in itself helps it to actively generate revenue.
Say what? Spending money on ads only works if people sign up for the service.
@@sandal_thong8631 it's Amazon. They already have plenty of people who have signed up for service.
Adam Driver needs to take a step back I think. He has gone with all the big and legendary directors that have snapped him up and it has not paid off once I don’t think. I think he needs to look at the script and story rather than just the prestigious director.
I had nooooo idea that Bolt was meant to be a film called American Dog.🤯
I just went down a radioactive rabbit hole, and have concluded that I would’ve likely loved Sanders’ original idea.
…or Tarantino.
I see those movies from India and Japan being mid budget and doing OK for themselves.
Wild Robot was wonderful! I really urge families and individuals to see it.
I actually really enjoy Horizon. It’s a nice sandbox he’s built. I can’t wait to see the rest.
3:28 2001 a space odyssey was NOT a flop and certainly was not critically panned. Kubrick was nominated for best director at the oscars.
It was when it originally released in ‘68. It’s re-release and vhs eventually helped it become profitable.
It had mixed reviews when it originally came out in 1968.
@@ssshar2176
I wouldn’t call it a flop. 2001 didn’t need a vhs-release to turn profitable. The movie was an expensive movie, but only narrowly didn’t make its money back upon first theatrical release; its first theatrical re-release in 1971 already turned it profitable and further re-releases made it very profitable.
I cried three times in wild robot … it was so good
yes!! sponsors!! you go Grace!
Yay love seeing grace having paid sponsors! Deserved!
The Wild Robot looks beautiful!!! Loved reading the book aloud to my students when it first came out! ❤
Big Ego, the Movie
most horror movies are shite tho
I’m amazed that after years and years of doing movie math, Grace is still able to have so much to talk about it. I really enjoyed how this entire video was put together and presented. Lots of great insights. Great job this week, Grace!
Meh. This was a passion project for Coppola. He made the film for himself. It exists for him and that's all that matters to him.
Then why even show it to the public? He should be watching his thing himself.
“Fine, I’ll do it myself “ 😂
As a gen z born in 03 I had never heard of the Menendez brothers until like two days ago when they blew up on my fyp on tiktok and I just loved the many many creative shots throughout the Menendez show.. from ep 5 with Cooper Koch’s Erik giving a straight up acting performance with no cuts for the entire episode.. to the parallel shots of the brothers being together in the limo in ep1 to being in separate police cars going separate ways in the final ep.. it made me look up if they were ever gonna get to reunite again in real life.. and now im so intrigued to tune in for the netflix documentary in October because the show made me so invested in them.. it was really well done.
Grace, if you research the Menendez brother case, you will see why this show has so much push back. The family even made a statement against it.

Lionsgate is pulling the 2008 Lions season. Just taking L's after L's. 😭
I am LOVING season 4 of only murders in the building!!! So glad they green lit S5 already.
