I also liked Doolittle more at first but Surfer Rosa grew on me massively and now I can’t choose between the two. Also Bossanova and Trompe le Monde are both incredible!
I can't choose a favourite between any of them they are all special and all unique. If I had to it would be Bossanova, simply as it was my introduction to PIXIES.
Great reaction, GIGANTIC really. So if you dig the female vocalists voice Kim Deal you should really check out her band where she sings lead and even better, she came out with(what I consider to be) a PERFECT album from back to front. Check out The Breeders - Last Splash. I won't tell you it's better than The Pixies but I will tell you I listen to it more often. Recommendations Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven Lil Ugly Mane - Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern Arca - Kick I-IIIII
Funny anecdote about the short songs was Black Francis and the producer, engineer, or somebody in the studio got in an arguement about the short songs. Story goes that they broke, and Francis took them out to the record store showing them Beatles records and all the songs that were only 2 or just over 3 min long.
Dawg. I freaking love you. Idk who's feeding you these suggestions. But it's the best selection on the site. I just listened to this and thought to myself, I bet Smags would love this. And come to find you already did it. Freaking love it dude. Never stop!
When I originally listened to his way back in the day they combined it with their EP Come on you Pilgrim. I actually prefer that Ep by a hair but love both.
Hey Smags, love the channel, here's some recs I think you'd enjoy from artists I don't think you've spun yet: Broken Social Scene - You Forgot it in People TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes Belle and Sebastian - Tigermilk The Antlers - Hospice Built to Spill - Keep it Like a Secret
Whenever Pixies are mentioned, it's always by people who claim they are THE inspiration and main influence of not only Nirvana, but alternative 90s rock in general, but that argument is way too superficial. People forget about Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth (and to a lesser extent My Bloody Valentine because they're really a late 80s band) and even earlier you have Husker Du and (one of my absolute favourites) The Replacements, sooo if you like Pixies, I would *strongly* recommend Bug or You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr, and/or Let It Be by The Replacements. Any of these three would be awesome to watch you react to. They're special albums. Oh and great video of course.
Another great group and album, thanx (You may know "Where is my mind" as a cover by Placebo or from many movies and TV series). So I hope one day you'll discover my favorite Suede and the Dog Man Star album.
I love this channel. Most other reaction channels don't do it for me, but this one does!! if you have any time, you should listen to come in by weatherday, my fav record of all time
Really good video man, love this album. If you’re accepting any requests I’d highly recommend “If you’re feeling sinister” by Belle and Sebastian. Anyway keep up the good videos
Keep up the great work, Smags. Random fact, 'something Against You' was in the Black Mirror episode, San Junipero. Recommendation: The Blaze - Jungle. This is my album of the year. Would love for you to review this before year end!
For me, what makes this album special and so great is the switch up. It starts off really abrasive and noisey, then transitions into some very sweet songs. Also there was nothing really close to anything like this at the time. Closest there was to the fusion and transition would be what Prince was doing, and soundwise too, sounding like a mix of REM and the Stooges. So ambitious and so good. Ahead of its time and became so influential in the alt rock scene that would boom from Here, and would have staying power in the underground. Without this album, there's no Nirvana, Green Day, Smashing Pumpkins, ect.
This album is a little disjointed but the chaos of it is part of its charm. As a first album the themes and the chaotic music says we are here and this is us so unapologetically. It is just a masterpiece.
Yes this was their first album, Doolittle came the year after. Doolittle is more consistent but Gigantic into River Euphrates into Where is my mind might be my favorite three song run ever. (Also Where Is My Mind is very popular because it was played in the final scene of Fight Club) 4 recommendations : George Clanton - Ooh Rap I Ya (2023/Neo-Psychedelia) Bowery Electric - Beat (1996/Shoegaze) Death Grips - The Powers That B (2015/Experimental Hip Hop) The Pillows - Happy Bivouac (1999/Power Pop)
You should absolutely react to The Hazards Of Love album by The Decemberists. It's a concept album that is different and out there, but a real fun indie rock experience.
Yo smags u the best album reactor and reviewer on UA-cam you should listen to pond the weather it won’t perform well but its my favorite album of all time or a better one for performance would be any CAN album
You should listen to David Bowie’s cover of “Cactus” I have an album you may enjoy: 1981 - The Stranglers “LaFolie” It flies between quirky and dark with great synth in the valleys. It’s a great one! I dig your channel, dude. Keep it up!
LIKE THE COD ZOMBIES IS SO... the reason why i watch u smags :)) keep being u also was it a mission to listen to specifically underground rock over underground rap bc i know some things u would fw but idk hope ur good bruh
I first heard this album combined on the same CD with the EP Come On Pilgrim, bulking its length somewhat. You probably would have liked that. The two are very similar in style but I agree Doolittle is better, it's more mature and more varied. Next after Doolittle is Bossa Nova, where they add in some elements of surf-rock. some very good songs on that.
Yo! You're right about Gigantic but I wouldn't say you got the whole picture! Think about how weird and kinky Pixies songs get. And listen to how sweet, young & innocent the lyrics are. Something's going on in 60s white middle class suburbia? I'm just saying that's my read!😂 And I really just gave away my age!😆😆
Kim is singing about that same Gigantic "big big love" that Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin is singing about when he goes "I'm gonna give you every inch of my love". 😆
Broken Face sounds a little bit hardcore punk. Pixies definitely have many punk elements but they fit the indie rock genre even though they had some major label stuff, I think 🤘💥
Come on Pilgrim is before this album...then after this album was Doolittle. Then they did Bossanova, then my favorite Trompe Le Monde. Then they broke up for many years and got back together and have had 4 more albums.
Idk if anyone has said this yet, but the Tigris and Euphrates were/are part of the fertile crescent, which is in Iraq, but many recognize it as the birthplace of Western civilization and Sumeria.
if you end up ever listening to this album enough to get hooked on it, i'm telling you "break my body" feels like a battle anthem when it comes on, like you feel the adrenaline rush up in your blood, it's crazy. the pixies is one of those bands who's albums just get better and better the more you listen to them, so if you enjoyed your first pass, i'm just sayin
Based on the albums you've listened to and liked, (and for anyone reading this who likes Aphex Twin and post-2000s Radiohead), I'd strongly recommend giving MODERAT a listen/reaction-they make some fantastic, groovy, moody, gloomy and atmospheric electronic music. Not enough love for those guys, but they opened for Radiohead back in '09, and you can definitely hear their influence on Thom Yorke's solo efforts!
smags go watch fight club and then come back and listen to where is my mind? it’s just 10x better after watching the movie. yk i gotta recommend the ooz or man alive by king krule again i think you’ll enjoy it based off ur reactions.
Check out Janes Addiction- Nothing Shocking (boobs on the cover of that one too) Soul Coughing- Ruby Vroom Paul McCartney - RAM Violent Femmes- Violent Femmes (1983) Thanks for entertaining me
Dude black francis wrote all these songs from a Christian point of view and his interpretation of them it's pretty mental but as a pixies fan that's the story
I just hate when youtube busts all over me while edging, I feel you Smags 😩

Trompe le Monde is so underrated
@@drdickphd Fact. It’s such a bittersweet ending to the way too short classic Pixies discography.
I think Doolittle is a better album, but I find that I've listened to Surfer Rosa many more times than any of their other albums over the years.
I can't choose a favourite between any of them they are all special and all unique. If I had to it would be Bossanova, simply as it was my introduction to PIXIES.
True bossanova and trompe le monde are their best albums
Watching them play "Something Against You" live is really a sight to behold. Just amazing 😩
I love you so much smegma!!! Keep uploading!

You'll like Bossanova.

There aren't too many Pinback reactions on YT, but I feel like you'd dig em. Summer in Abaddon is solid, or Blue Screen Life.
You gotta do you’re living all over me by Dinosaur Jr. Essential indie/noise rock record!
Love to see you doing more Pixies, one of my all time favs. My recommendation is Bee thousand by Guided by voices, I think you'll really dig it!
