Eddie I have a tekeda dry filter, bought the k&n oil kit before realizing my filter was dry, I used the detergent and rinse and dried, I would imagine it will deteriorate the cotton over time but time will tell, my sri was only about $260. A lot cheaper then k&n but I can always use my tube with different filter, thinking about running the $20 spectre filter from pep boys to see the difference
in the way of afe, KN and AEM a dry filter should trap more dirt and need less maintenance. While an oiled filter will allow more air flow but you prob need to keep up on maintenance
Oh ? You must be incredibly smart , wayyyyy smarter than the many mechanics I’ve seen blow large debris off the outside . Those guys with all that experience are not nearly as smart as you
Stephen Stern on my LB7 6.6 I had to buy a new MAF sensor for my truck because of it.. I switched back to paper and I haven't had a problem with it since..
I'm glad S&B includes a graduated oil applicator so there's no chance of over oiling the filter. My mass air flow sensor is still running high and dry for the last two years.
Compressed air blows holes in the cotton gauze which would allow dirt particles to pass through, as well as disturbing the thickness of the cotton so that the filtering surface is no longer uniform and consistent.🇺🇸
That compressed air comment is crazy.... you should never used compressed air to clean any filter. It leaves a possible place for smaller particles to potentially get through the area you blew a larger piece out of. There is always a chance of damage. We are talking MICRONS of filtration, smaller than the eye can see. Just crazy he said that.
I'll make it short and sweet. If you are looking for performance get the biggest oiled filter that exists. If you are looking for engine longevity get the best and biggest dry filter that exists for your vehicle. Oiled filters have larger perforations, allowing more air, and thus performance, but at the cost of allowing fine dust particles through. Paper, a GOOD quality paper filter (WIX, Purolator), has tiny perforations preventing or "restricting" air flow, resulting in a very slightly diminished performance, but improved air filtration of finer dust particles with respect to oiled. For all you pro oil filters people. Yeah, at first your going to "potentially" notice better performance, and improved fuel econ; however, in time, you are going to lose all of it at at substantial significance secondary to the wear from those fine dust particles over the years from all those fine dust particles wearing out the rings and cylinders. I F'ed up and installed a K&N and cleaned and reoiled it at every other oil change. The performance and fuel econ on that vehicle vs my other vehicle that just used a quality dry filter is remarkable to say the least (over the years). I will be honest here, I would never, and I mean never, install another oiled filter on any of my vehicles again. Hey, do what you like, it's your ride, I am just shedding some light on the matter. Oh, if you need real clarification, look up Project Farm and his testing on such filters. A definite watch before considering an oiled filter for sure.
hey there, nice explanation, so im in a debate to buy the K&N Typhoon or the one which isntals with a box from AIRAID, for my 2015 SHO!! any help?? which one has a better intake?
When he said “blow off the dirt from the outside, with compressed air, while it’s still in the truck”, I almost lost my lunch. This dude is a filter expert? Bulshhh!
That varies so much based on the conditions that your driving in. Which is one reason we really like the clear Plexiglas lid that S&B uses. It allows you to easily see an monitor the filter so you will see when to clean it.
With my 08 6.7 CTD running a stock replacement filter I ran into the issue of the turbo sucking the oil out of the filter in less than a month, and it would also pull the filter minder down. Most diesel guys I know say not to run an oil filer, is there a workaround for this? 08 ram with deletes and h&s mini maxx.
Nick K Tripping the filter minder could be caused by high boost situations like towing heavy with the filter over oiled. Are you running through the oil on your drop in KN after you oil it or did you have that problem right out of the box. The turbo face is going to be oily because of the crankcase ventilation system as well.
My ccv is vented out, the filter was deleted. Right out of the box the filter was going though oil. I only used the filter for about a month and went to a wix filter. I haven't pulled anything during that time but running att on the minimaxx I'm pulling 42psi of boost on a stock turbo.
Nick K I would clean the KN filter well and lightly re-oil it. Try that and see where that gets you. Possible that the filter was over oiled from the start?
1 quick coat of oil one way and turn it around and 1 more coat to get the other side. Common sense tells you don't drench it with oil. Never had a problem and no need to buy new filters.
Garner R Buckley III We never saw a notification with a response to this post. However, we will clear up the air on this for all. (pun intended) S&B does not offer an aerosol oil can nor do we offer that product. We welcome anyone to find on our site where we sell an aerosol oil can from S&B. Using a non S&B cleaner and oil will put a user in grounds for voiding their warranty on the S&B product. Likewise it is highly encouraged to NOT use them and only use S&B oils for S&B products. There is some truth in Jeff G statement. Good find! S&B had a run of aerosol can products almost four years ago but NO LONGER OFFER them. Any site offering such a product is not up to date or are pulling very old stock. Use the Precision II cleaning & oiling kit from S&B. That is what we offer to apply oil to S&B filters. See link: www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/S&B/cleaning-kit.htm
oh my god , if a tiny bit of dust was to get past filter I'm sure the fuel and air burning would destroy it before it wears away your rings eh ?? ive run k and n on all my cars and motorbikes and will continue to use them . please use your brains people lmfao
We have been using AFE cold air systems and filters on our Hotshot duramaxes and powerstrokes trucks with over 400kmiles not a problem yet just regular maintenance same filter just wash and dry put it back on looks just as new.
mines been a pain because of the active air intake. I think im gonna change it to a sinister. the filter itself really is pretty good but the hose ,airbox and other stuff I really havent cared for .
AFE makes a reusable dry filter. They work great. Just hose them out and let them dry and they're ready to go another round.
I have these. Do you still need that air filter cleaner from afe? without adding oil after?
Eddie I have a tekeda dry filter, bought the k&n oil kit before realizing my filter was dry, I used the detergent and rinse and dried, I would imagine it will deteriorate the cotton over time but time will tell, my sri was only about $260. My Afe filter leaks all the oil, thinking about changing it
K&n uses a aerosol spray oil, what's the issue?
TRY CLEANING AIR FILTERS ON A M1A1 ABRAMS TANK IN IRAQ THEY ARE HUGE AND YOU BEAT WASH BLOW FOR HOURS TO CLEAN THEM
chaosmucker good ol v packs
in the way of afe, KN and AEM a dry filter should trap more dirt and need less maintenance. While an oiled filter will allow more air flow but you prob need to keep up on maintenance
I would think a oiled filter protect better like they said in the video. but what I wrote is what I came up with form reading each manufactures site.
Why are they the same price
If you blow compressed air on the dirty side of the air filter, I will laugh at you
Oh ? You must be incredibly smart , wayyyyy smarter than the many mechanics I’ve seen blow large debris off the outside . Those guys with all that experience are not nearly as smart as you
I just pour some Budweiser on my oiled filter s&b on my 7.3 and she keeps on shinin
lol
Change your oil every 5k, bet it won't make a difference which filter you use, but i still prefer paper, seems to catch a lot more dirt.
How do I know if my filter is dry or wet? It’s an S&B true flow.
It came with my Whipple Supercharger.
Brandon Todd did you ever figure this out?
With S&B at least, white is dry, red is oil.
This is exactly why I do not use s b because their dry filters are throw alway filters the dry filters that banks offers reusable
No comment on MAF damage which pretty much everyone wonders, along with tuners.
Stephen Stern on my LB7 6.6 I had to buy a new MAF sensor for my truck because of it.. I switched back to paper and I haven't had a problem with it since..
Jason Gibbs Were you first using an oiled filter then switched to a dry filter?
I'm glad S&B includes a graduated oil applicator so there's no chance of over oiling the filter. My mass air flow sensor is still running high and dry for the last two years.
What intake is better for my Ford F-150 4.6 k&n AEM Or aFe ? And dry or oiled ?
So can I wash my dry filter with water
Refer to your respective filter manufacturers recommendation.
Does the oiled air filter costs more than the dry air filter?
No, they are the same cost.
How does compressed air damage the cotton? The metal grid should keep it in place.
Manufacturer recommends against the use of compressed air.
Compressed air blows holes in the cotton gauze which would allow dirt particles to pass through, as well as disturbing the thickness of the cotton so that the filtering surface is no longer uniform and consistent.🇺🇸
@@TheNVBA Ah, I get it now. I wouldn't have thought that the cotton would maintain such uniformity under normal use. Thanks!

I have a DNA motoring AFPN drop in air filter for my F150,, it saids just use air filter cleaner spray let Dry reuse,, doesn’t need re-oiled!
He's a specialist and says it's okay to blow air on the outside the filter? That is bad you want to blow it out from the inside.
He’s not a specialist. He OWNS the company that manufactures the filter that he is talking about.
how do you clean those just pour water on it ?
For most oiled filters, a specific cleaning kit can be purchased. Follow the manufacturers directions for cleaning.
hey there, nice explanation, so im in a debate to buy the K&N Typhoon or the one which isntals with a box from AIRAID, for my 2015 SHO!! any help?? which one has a better intake?
As soon as he said use compressed air to clean a filter elements I stopped listening.... Compressed air is the fastest way to blow holes in the media
Exactly...
Obviously anyone with a brain would set the psi to 30 or below, and that does NOT blow holes in the media, for all you driveway mechanics
What type of oil is used on your filters? Mineral?
+Nathan Porter www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/S&B/cleaning-kit.htm
+Thoroughbred Diesel Right, but what sort of oil is that? Mineral? Vegetable?
+Nathan Porter The makeup of S&B’s oil, according to their website, is proprietary.
Justin Hickey There are dry filters.
If you run an oil filter on a turbo it sucks the oil in an causes all kinds of problems ?
No, as long as you don’t over oil the filter you shouldn’t have any problems.
All your oil filter reusable?
Oiled filters are made to be reusable.
Dry cloth seem to be best

His next video will be "How to change your oil while your truck is running" 🔥
Yeah gotta take it off 4 sure
Havent cleaned mine in 150k.
😮
Hi nice videos I would like to know how many miles you can change cotton or dry filter? Thanks
That varies so much based on the conditions that your driving in. Which is one reason we really like the clear Plexiglas lid that S&B uses. It allows you to easily see an monitor the filter so you will see when to clean it.
Oil filters can be dangerous. Get a dry filter.

What filter were you running?
K&N's drop in for the stock air box.
Nick K Tripping the filter minder could be caused by high boost situations like towing heavy with the filter over oiled. would wd-40 or cooking spray lubricate the filter? if your poor? lol
Lol
Jesus christ no!
please do this and report back.

You say don't use an aerosol can to apply oil to the filter, yet you sell oil in an aerosol can for your filters... what gives?
Jeff G S&B does not sell oil in an aerosol can? Not sure what you're looking at.
Thoroughbred Diesel They sure do. It's UPC 841372016349. Part number 88-0002. s10.postimg.org/b8h9z5nah/20141002_140350.jpg

I use Virgin Olive Oil on my filter. 😂 Just kidding
You guys are hilarious. In the south it is canola oil all day long.
