One of my favorite vehicle maintenance videos on UA-cam. Great, easy to understand tutorial with humor and personality. Used your air filter cleaner video again to clean the filter of my 02' Toyota Sequoia, Spring 2023! See you again this fall!
Thank you so much for this video. I discovered my truck had a K&N filter and had no idea what to do with it. Your video was easy to understand and, after watching it a few times, I successfully cleaned and reinstalled my filter. Great job!!
I bought a second filter to always have a clean one for a quick swap and then I can take my time about cleaning the other and not worry about not having to wait for it to dry, etc. worth it.
So...was just watching an informative video and probably would have moved on with my life. Then, I saw the windmill, and am now a subscriber. Good work!
It's 2024 and your video is still helping people learn how to clean these filters. I just got done oiling the filter, so I'm letting it sit for a bit now. Then I'll clean off the excess oil and put it back on. Thank you sooo much for making this video easy to follow and understand. 😁
Thank you VERY MUCH for the really helpful video - I was NOT looking forward to this task. I took before and after photos, and 3rd after I oiled it. Looks great. Hope it works great too! NOTE! Going to leave firing up my SUV for a while. I plan on removing the cover and seeing if I was too enthusiastic with the oil and will mop up any drippings before I go anywhere. Posted by an "older lady" who is recently widowed, lives in the boondocks with no-one to ask for help! Wondering if my sorely missed Dearly Departed is perched on his cloud going "WAY TO GO WIFEY". Thank you, Mr. WhoeverYouAre!
Yes, he is, ma'am. The first rule is do your best. The second is get it right, don't guess. That delay to see if the oil is really dry is just that and what is needed. The very best to you.
Air compressor dry, inside to out and spray. Nothing exploded or broke. Lol, thanks for sharing this video sir. Good stuff. Keep your breathers clean people.
Something worth noting if you live in a colder clomate : ghe flexible rubber end which goes over the intake "pipe" is sensitive to temperature and can become very rigid when cold. I have had to use a heatgun to soften it up for removal , hot water was also helpful for reinstallation
Thanks so much ! This is very helpful as my eyes even with my glasses on can’t read the tiny instructions in the can and bottle. So that’s why I found this video ! Btw I had a great laugh 😂at the ‘drying’ segment. The ‘air guitar’ 🎸 was absolutely my favourite! @6:20 a good tip he made, check clamps, and do a visual inspection and go over everything with a screwdriver checking for tightness. I pressed my fan belts and air con belt and found a fair amount of flex, so I’m glad I took a couple of minutes to inspect other things like hoses (condition) while replacing air filter. Also oil, power steering and brake fluid levels and coolant level in the coolant reservoir. (Take reservoir containers cap off and look in side, as the plastic container can become stained and a false level can be given from only looking from the outside). Always take the radiator cap off (with cold engine) and check coolant level as an air bubble in the hose from reservoir to radiator can prevent coolant from topping up the radiator.
A buddy of mine has K&N filters on his vintage motorcycle and he uses a high pressure air blow gun to clean them (K&N recommends NEVER use compressed air) - this is a BIG NO NO. It destroys the gauze fibers and there is nothing left but the wire cage! Yea, plenty of air flow, just zero filtering. Excellent video by the way - I'll show this to my students. Thanks, Bill Ross Maine Region 10 Technical High School - Outdoor Powersports Instructor
Nicely presented,Thank you. Well done! Same kit as I have. I bought another Filter so I can simply Swap a Clean one for a Dirty one and then take my time cleaning the one I just took off and that way I’m never stranded without my Ride!
Great vid very informative! I'd like also like to add as you mentioned spray on the pleats and do not worry about getting it completely red the first time as the oil will wick itself into the small corners etc. I made the mistake of over oiling my filter the very first time using the square bottle . 3k miles later, my car started revving higher than usual during acceleration almost as if my trans was slipping, popped my hood took a look and sure enough small amount of air filter oil puddling near my pcm, (my air filter sits on top of my pcm) . I was skeptical but i figured it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. Re-cleaned my air filter went with the oil spray bottle instead and went easy on it. Cleaned my MAF with MAF cleaner. Threw it all back together. And BAM my car drove back to normal. ALSO..if you happen to drive a boosted car and experience a sudden lack of boost, take a look at your air filter before tearing other stuff apart.
I clean mine about every 8k miles up here in WA. Works out to about once per year. 195k on my f150 now. Also, I have 2 filters so I can take a day or two between cleaning, drying, and lubing the filter. Great video!
@@homebuiltshop hey, quit question.... im trying to swap my 97 cluster to a 98-99 without the dummy lights...but do you know how to calibrate the miles into the replacement?
Let me add this: Make sure you look closely between the pleats. Washing alone will not remove trash deeply embedded between the pleats. I use visual inspection. Then I remove some debris with forceps and/or I will stand the cone up and rinse it carefully from top to bottom. If this damages your filter, you might want to buy a better filter!
I've been doing the same as another guy here and buying new filters, but at a hundred bucks a pop I'd been meaning to clean mine this time instead. So thanks for the guide!
I’d also recommend getting a pre-filter. It’s sort of like a super thin sock that goes over the cone filter to keep really big things from getting trapped in the pleats like bugs and leafs.
I left the cleaner soaking on the filter on a cold evening for abt an hour before I rinsed it. I don't think it dried on the filter an the filter looked normal compared to past cleanings but I was just curious what could happen if the cleaner dried on the filter an is there a way to tell if I did any damage to the filter.
This video was way better than the explanation from K&N themselves! Thank you so much for explaining things well. I have a 2019 ford flex that i bought the K&N kit for and ive had mine for about 6 months and it starting to look dirty so i figured i would start looking into cleaning it out in the next couple months.
Thanks for the upload that was way easier than I thought it would be. I'd say best amount of times to clean them would be every 6 to 8 months just a guess
Thanks, The interval between cleaning does depend largely on the type of driving conditions you're in. I've cleaned them once a year, and sometimes a few times a year. I'd say your estimate is reasonable.
If you have a dehumidifier, put it in a small bathroom or closet and set the rinsed filters near the vents. Depending on the dehumidifier and room size, this works pretty fast.
Should wait and let the oil seat/set before reinstalling or at least before you start your vehicle. I use two filters, one on the car and one cleaned and ready in a box waiting till the next filter change. When I take the old one off, I put the prepared one on immediately. If I wanted to drive my truck, I can at any time. This way after cleaning the dirty one, I have plenty of time to let it dry. Then I apply the oil and place it in a Ziplock gallon sized bag and place it in a box on the shelf. It sits there ready to go for the next change.
In the process of cleaning my filter now the video was super helpful and Ik my one like and subscribe dosnt help very much but hopefully it does something, god bless and thank you
Great video. I wish I had watched this years ago. I’ve found while waiting for the filter to dry that it was an opportune time to clean the mass air flow sensor as well as inspect and or clean the throttle body valve. Cleaning both with their respective sprays.
1:32 we can hear a guy who almost cleaned his K&N filter and give it some gas! (by the way, thanks for video mate, now i got a clean filter because ive followed your steps!)
Ya I like the spray is easier. I have an S&B oil filter for engine and K&N cabin air filter. I have to apply oil to the pleats and it's a huge filter. Cabin is easy just spray 3 times I'm good. My question is how do I know if I have enough oil on the filter or too much? If I get some on my hands when I touch it is that too much. It's a light blue color in my case.
What else can you use besides the K&N spray? Also, I didn't expect to watch this video and laugh as much as I did while learning. Thank you so much for making my day! 😄
I do not know for sure as I've only used K&N products. I would guess it would work if the other filter is also a cotton filter, but I cannot say for sure. I'd imagine other brands have their own cleaner that they recommend using.
I'm glad I found your video, I normally just buy another filter this the third filter. So I decided to clean them all that keeps me from buying a new one lol.

Should one install a temporary paper filter to extend the process in time and not be pressed to get vehicle back on the road? Allow the water dry off a few days and then a few days of drying after oiling? Thank you for your help, sir.
When you said that you should not speed up the drying section. Is it too bad to use compressed air? And if you can is it the same way ”inside to outside”
I personally don't use compressed air or anything, but if you were to, you would go from the inside to outside, and you would want to use a low air pressure. I'm not recommending it though, as there's a chance of damaging the filter with too much pressure.
Thats a great question. I've never had to replace one yet. I've been running the same filter for years. I suppose if it ever got to the point where it would not come mostly clean, or if the filter got damaged you may need to replace it, otherwise, I really don't have a good answer.
Mine lasted for 5 years them the cotton fibers started to disintegrate and left little bare spots with no filter just metal mesh. I threw it away and got another one.
Did this, but 1 question is, why oil it after? Why not put it back in dry, like all throw away dry filters have been? I oiled it, just curious as to why a oiled air filter would be ideal.
These filters are not made from a paper like the throw away ones. They are made of a cotton type material. The oil helps to catch the dirt as it passes through the filter.

How do you let it get that bad? Preventative maintenance works wonders.
Thanks for making this video I have one question I used the air pressure to make my filters dry is it ok or not ?
As long as the filter is still intact, and the cotton fibers did not get damaged, you should be ok. I'd avoid that next time though.
can you use a blow dryer or a heat gun to dry filter after cleaning?
Do you have to do any calibrations for cold air intakes?.. my cars oxygen sensors have been a bit loopy since I installed mine..
Installing the filter and idling your car a few minutes speeds up the drying process. :)
When you put it back on, how much do you tighten it?
Its just a hose clamp so it will go pretty tight. Just don't crush the tube.
