When I watched Saltburn I was thinking "Where have I seen this before?". I finally worked out the answer.
This movie is perfect! Great actor, Rome and the thrilling storyline, props to Netflix for recommending this movie.
🙌🙌
This is one of my wife and my favorites as well. We quote Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s “Tommy, how’s the peeping?” as code for someone acting creepy.
I actually don’t think Tom Ripley is gay or has any real sexuality at all. He just does whatever he needs to do to ingratiate himself and co-opt another’s life. Dickey loves for people to love him. Tom realizes that and so he projects falling in love with Dickey, which Dickey expects everyone in his life to do. When Tom gets too clingy however, because he wants Dickey’s life and doesn’t want to let it go, Dickey pushes him away. Tom does the same thing to Meredith and later to Peter Smith-Kingsley. I think like every other aspect of his personality, Tom’s sexual and romantic identity just changes to whatever he thinks will ingratiate him to the person whose lifestyle he’s trying to work his way into.
Great comment! We gotta do a full episode on this
If Tom could change his sexuality for the greater goal of attaining wealth and the high life, then wouldn't it have been far easier for Tom to pursue old rich ladies and seduce them for their money? Be the charming, manipulative kept man of an old rich widow or something? The way Tom went about this was bizarre, seducing or trying to seduce men and young ladies who had no money of their own (Meredith was clearly an heiress, but she'd inherit in at least two to three decades). Since Tom went the clearly more difficult route to the lifestyle he yearned for, that leads me to believe that Tom was a closeted gay man.
Interesting observation about Tom's sexuality. I definitely think Tom is either Bisexual or in the closet. I do think that he was in love with Dickie and that Meredith and Peter were just flings/sidepieces. Tools that he used to get him from A to B. He is haunted by Dickie's murder as he sees Dickie as his dream husband/lover. That showed unrequited love to him.
Fwiw I believe the director said outright he wrote/directed Tom as having at least *some* genuine emotion and not a true psychopath, because he did not consider a true psychopath who kills easily and doesn't care about it to be an interesting character to follow for a whole story (in contrast to the novel - it seems he liked the premise but was less interested in lionising Highsmith's troubled misanthropy with his adaptation than she was in her own work). I also think taking Tom and Dickie as both being closeted gay (or honestly imo, bisexual) men opens the film up to more interesting thematic interpretations- that Tom is desperate to escape into Dickie's life figuratively or literally but does not realise that the kind of life Dickie has actually comes with roughly equivalent problems to his current one. By the end of the film Tom, for all the class he's gained by becoming Greenleaf's subsitute son, hasn't actually moved from square one at all and it's not because he failed to emulate Dickie, it's precisely because he's emulated him to perfection. Dickie even has a history of violence when put under pressure precisely the same as Tom.
just saw this movie! the scene where the private investigator tells ripley that dickie’s money will be given to him and ripley is clearly thrilled but has to disguise it is one of my favorite acting sequences ever.
Sooo good!
One of my favourite thrillers and adaptations of all time. It’s utterly transfixing.
Amazing film
The script, scenery, locations were impeccable too. Outstanding performances (although Matt Damon is so blatantly being dubbed doing Dickie's Dad's voice) Its not that it's 'underrated' just that it's a psychological thriller. Scares the shite out of people! Everyone I know hates that film! Sorry! Good film evaluation though. Thanks for uploading!
Thanks for your opinion!
Dickie should have believed Tom when he told the truth about himself had he done that he might have lived longer.
100%. Dickie’s arrogance leads to his ignorance

. Love what you guys are doing . Found out about the podcast through tiktok... Feels like I met new friends who love movies as much as I do... thanks!!!
Awesome! Thank you Don!!!
I just discovered this channel🔥 I was rewatching "Talented Ripley " because I cherish it so much and I thought to look up some video essays on the film and the performances !
I definitely think it's one of Matt Damon's greatest films, along with "Good Will Hunting"👏👏
Appreciate it! Check out our Best Boston movies episode too 🙌
Blade Runner was my #1 movie until this one. Gives me goose bumps. Matt Damon should have been nominated for the Oscars and this should have won best picture, best director and best actor, Damon. Not the biggest Damon fan but he was brilliant in this…

The French version of this film from the 1960s called Purple Noon is amazing
I love this movie so much so it was awesome to find this. I'll be checking out more of your stuff. Subscribed 👍♥️
Thanks Susie!!
First watched this film years ago on VHS knowing absolutely nothing about it beforehand I wasn't prepared for the turns the story took. The Netflix remake was fantastic but I found this version more believable in terms of Ripley stealing his friend's identity & being able to stay several steps ahead of the law
Just now watching this bc I watched The Talented Mr. Ripley because y’all recommended it and I loved it! Also, y’all haven’t missed a beat since y’all made this episode💯
Thanks my dude!!
master piece. everything is perfect and the music !!! wow
100%
one of my favourite movies, every actor was fantastic!
🙌
Matt Damon's portrayal of the very ambiguous, cunning and somewhat sympathetic villain Mr Tom Ripley. Was one of the first times where I actually wanted the villain to get away with his crimes. I think it's because the way that Matt portrays the character, he's actually the most likeable character in the entire movie. As he's surrounded by snobs and ungrateful privileged douchebags. Also 💯 Damon should have got the Academy Award Nomination for Best Actor!!
Those rich people end up being somewhat likeable -- at least Paltrow's character was. Whether or not we like or feel sorry for Tom doesn't excuse his bullshit.
@@KernelHughes Really? Apart from Cate Blanchett's character. The rest of them I couldn't give care less if Tom killed them.
You should go and watch the French version and get a broader perspective, Mat Damon's performance of an obvious and shaky sociopath vs Alain Delon sutil portrayal of the same guy that gives you the impression of "I could know that guy and have no idea", even better one ends up rooting for him.
wil do!
I really want to watch this now and I love the stuff my favourite podcast of all time.
It's so good! Thanks Blake
Up until the moment he killed Jude Law, I always felt like Tom was second best, never narcissistic.
This movie makes me think Matt Damon would have been great as Patrick Bateman in American psycho
He could have pulled it off for sure 🙌
This version is much better, then italian, with Alein Delon 1960. The Purple Noon
And, FYI… the movie is EXPONENTIALLY superior to the book. I love the movie, so I read the book and was bored STIFF. So many differences. The movie is one I could watch again and again. I barely made it through the book.
Agreed!! 🙌🙌
Nah the movie is ass compared to the book
I like the book but i think the movie is definitely a bit better
Enjoyed both but the film definitely has a uniquely creepy vibe. Matt Damon's performance left me feeling very freaked out.
Totally agree
What a great movie! And the music is so impressive.
🙌🙌
Is this the full segment? Feels like it was cut off? Did you speak more about this movie? If yes, where can I watch? :)
Yup! Go to the full episodes and Check out our serial killer episode!
The. Casting was impeccable 👌🏻 Jude Law was nominated for an Oscar as Dickie Greenleaf and P S-Hoffman I could see a mile off in this film playing smug repugnant arrogant public school boy much like his role in Scent of a Woman!
Couldn’t agree more!
@@raidersofthelostpodcast_ I have experience of arrogant public school boys in my own family - you're not meant to kill them!
@@stephaniechristol1625 😂😂
One of my Top Three Films of all time! Matt Damon also did The Rainmaker with Danny Davito which is really a very good movie.
🙌🏻🙌🏻
Its a Masterpiece !!!
🙌
The one of you who thinks Tom would have killed Peter is right. The romance with Peter is not there, and Tom doesn't accept Peters invitation to travel for this reason: 'Some quality of his relationship with Dickie flashed across his mind like the memory of a nightmare, like a pale and evil ghost. It was because the same thing could happen with Peter, he thought, Peter the upright, unsuspecting, naive, generous, good fellow - - except that he didn't look enough like Peter. But one evening for Peters amusement, he had put on an English accent and had imitated Peter's mannerisms and his way of jerking his head to one side as he talked, and Peter thought it hilariously funny. He shouldn't have done that, Tom thought now. It made Tom bitterly ashamed, that evening and the fact that he had thought even for an instant that the same thing that happened with Dickie could happen with Peter. '
One of the best movies. Very realistic characters. Great story. Beautiful cinematography etc.. Actually the way Jude Law plays is masterful as well. Also a very realistic character. Out of experience with this kind of people. Except for being the son of a boat mogul.. Definitely one of my favorite movies as well. I was yesterday thinking about this movie after not having seeing it in 7 years or so. Rewatched it. Love it even more. An instant classic for me.. Btw I think the rejection is instigated by that horrible snob Freddie miles. I hated that guy so much in that movie brilliantly played by the late Hoffman that I honestly liked when Tom killed him. In the movie of course. If it was real would be different of course... I think lol.
100% agree!
Thanks guys had to rewatch movie 🍿
🍿🍿🍿
It was a brilliant movie all-star cast

Your title is so correct "Highly Underrated Masterpiece"! I've seen this movie perhaps 20 times. And yes, I do think that it's Matt Damon's greatest effort. Entire cast is spectacular. Just love this picture!
🙌
Tom kills Dickie in self-defense, dammit and it has nothing to do with envy or wanting to be him! 😁 Also, I'm convinced Dickie figures out Tom wasn't one of his contemporaries at Princeton long before he calls him out for it. He even fondly makes fun of his inability to sail during their 'honeymoon period,' saying "Such little class, Marge, does this guy know anything?" He chooses to ignore the lie because he enjoys having Tom around... until he doesn't... and THEN he weaponizes it. Incidentally, the prickly response Anthony Minghella gives Marge: "It's a good thing we're not getting married soon or we'd have to invite Tom on our honeymoon..." is a masterful way of showing that she's starting to feel like the third wheel in what is really Tom & Dickie's love story. You're welcome. 😁
He defended himself, but then murdered Dickie when he was completely defenseless
Matt Damon movies in the 90s is his best work. And he did play a villain or a not so nice person in the movie School Ties. That was the first time I’ve seen Matt in a movie and right before his stardom breakout movie Good Will Hunting.
Just a Sec! This Movie is 90s "Saltburn" or I have to say Saltburn is this era's "The Talented Mr. Ripley".
Lullaby for Cain ❤️
Great track
Two thoughts: what do you think was about to happen to Marge as Tom slowly approached in his bathrobe, with a razor in the pocket? Was he gonna just murder her? Make it look like a suicide?
And what about the end, with Meredith Logue and her parents? Ya think they all might fall overboard, ha ha? Can't let them tell high society friends, including Mr. Greenleaf, that they had seen "Dickie" on that boat...that could mess up Tom Ripley's golden future! Probably best to sink the whole boat, with Tom Ripley as the sole survivor!
He was going to kill her I think!
He is now going to play Dickie with her until he can get away
My favorite from Damon BY A LONG SHOT
🙌🙌
Reminds me of Dahmer. Always the violent kind
Please pronounce his name properly. Its Ant - ony (no 'h' sound) Ming - ella (a hard 'g', not 'minj').
Never under-rated. It's recognised for the masterpiece it is.
It only has a 7.4 on IMDb and 3.8 on Letterboxd! The ratings by the general public are way too low
It’s a hard G though. Not Minjella. That’s just how “gh” is pronounced in Italian - like ghetto.
Tom Ripley walked so that Patrick Bateman could run.
I'm not sure it is underrated. I read a lot of very positive reviews.
I guess I'm going to have to be a hater because I didn't really like the movie. Yes, the acting is great and location beautiful. All of the outrageous things he did and then the dumbing down of the detectives, just enough for him to keep getting away. Too unrealistic and made me not like the movie.
No worries!
Not the best take, in my opinion.
Brilliant movie, though.
Beautifully shot and dressed movie, great performances but depressing story. Cringe but couldnt stop watching.
The story sucks you in
I disagree, I never got scared of Damon's character in this movie.
This movie is far from underrated
Masterpiece??? Quite inferior to "En Plein Soleil" which is based on the same novel.
Patricia Highsmith saw the version with Alain Delon and said Delon was "as she had envisaged Tom".
She also passed away before this movie was released in 1999 so how do you know she wouldn’t have enjoyed it more?
Just curious as to why no one has mentioned the previous 1960 adaptation Purple Noon? What are your opinions on that?
I utterly hated that movie. So boring JESUS
