Great video Pete, I really enjoy these comparisons it was an eye opener to see the knives side by side (I thought the master hunter was an F1 until you named them all) all your points were really interesting and relevant thanks mate

Love this multi-dimensional matrix at the end. Really quality. Fairly new to your channel, but if this is new, keep it up!

I've been binge watching your videos I love them! you're extremely comprehensive while managing to not drone on and on like many others. also you actually seem to put your knives to some use so you have a good understanding of performance. keep it up I can see you getting big

Two quick tips that might fix the schrade, slip a piece of sand paper between the scale and tang (cut to size of of course) or strip the coating (don't know why this worked).

I really like the looks of that Lionsteel knife! I've been watching a lot of reviews on it, and it just might be my next fixed blade knife purchase. I own the Strongarm, and I agree..it's a great knife, and a real tank..I have the BDZ1 steel model..I love it! A great all around utilitarian blade. You almost can't hurt it..very tough knife for all around use. Great sheath as well. As for the Schrade, not a fan. Why they chose that cheap plastic handle is beyond me..their TPE handles are much better. Schrade overall are fine if you are on a tight budget, but in my opinion, there are better low cost options. They used to be a good knife maker, but lately, they seem to be having QC problems..bad heat treats, flimsy construction, etc..also, for some reason, they just seem to love hollow grinds. Not the best grind for outdoor heavy use tasks.

Niolox does not not have most of the problems of d2. It's vers fine grain. This makes it more tough. Also it is very stain resistent.

    • @D00MTR33
      @D00MTR33 5 років тому +3

Well said. It has almost half the carbon of D2 with a bit more Moly and in addition to Vanadium it has added Niobium(great carbide former). Niolox has a very fine grain structure and high toughness for a stainless steel. It also has a high working hardness of 61-63hrc(some custom makers get it up to 65hrc) while maintaining edge stability and toughness. I really wish more makers used, it's relatively cheap and has great qualities for knife use.

Nice to read these comments. I only have LionSteel T5 in Niolox. San Mai with Niomax is something quite separate/ different and I sorta wanna try that

From the looks of the other knives, it seems like the Cold Steel SRK would be a more appropriate knife to compare than the Master Hunter. However, if I'm going for a Cold Steel made 3V knife, I'd opt for the AK-47 fixed blade to get the G10 handle over the kraton. the CS AK-47 fixed blade is going for around $175, so it's in the same price range as the Lionsteel and the Falkniven, but the CPM-3V steel makes it better than the other two and worlds better than your last two (Schrade should only be purchased in an emergency when nothing, not even Walmart brand knives are available.)

Its funny since the pandemic my tolerance for high prices has doubled. I don't look at value and price because they are fleeting. I quite enjoy great knives already paid for.
Its gotten bad because I just paid for a piece of DAMACORE thats about the same price as two excellent fixed blade knives, but ill probably always look at putting most of my money into knives, especially fixed blaces, but I'll be just as happy if i buy no more because these are all i'll ever go through

I like the Fällkniven S1! Had one for 15 years now, the full VG10 version with the leather sheath, and Zero problems with it. Btw, the S in the name stands for "Skog", translated to Forrest in English.

Great review. Although it goes without saying (as you're no doubt already aware) you crossed genres with these knives form survival, hunting, semi-tactical & camp knives. They are indeed as your title states: Medium Fixed Blade Knives.
I can't argue with a thing you determined or said about these knives. I know the brand is loved or hated for countless reasons but the Cold Steel Master Hunter in 3V is unquestionably a high value knife.
I trust you haven't blocked me & thank you if indeed you haven't, for my scathing & cynical comment on your latest "shared" review. As a young man, you continue to surprise me with your knowledge, practical sense & approach to the use, reality & value of the knives you feature. Cheers.

Given your revised valuation of the Falkniven, how would you compare it to the Cold Steel SRK in 3v? In the US it's between $10 and $20 more than the 3V Master Hunter.

Lionsteel T5 is still a better knife than the M5. Lionsteel M4 and T5, are by far the best knives they make. It's not the steel, that marketing trend push people to beleive it's the No1 factor for a good knife, CPM3V is less overated than 1095 but still an overated steel. If you want a rugged steel that will be more proper for field use, nothing comes close to ballbearing steel. Even Vanadis 4 Extra, has better edge stablity, holds it's edge twice long and is easier to sharpen. That's simlar in performance with the ballbearing steel, I mentioned.
Lionsteels are good knives, however, they still lack quality proper steels for their knives intended uses, quality of their heat treatment is low same as their poor blade/edge geometres ( very thick behind the edge) That's why they are cheap. It's still a good buy, but in my opinion, I would suggest those, to more experienced users, who at least will be able to fix the geometry issue. Not bad for collectors too, especially those who like futuristic designs.

gillynaut the bravo was an excellent knife but the sheath just didnt work. And It was so expensive that it wasny earning its $320 ticket into my life. But I would still recommend it as highly capable. Almost walks that line of feeling 'too nice' to use. Almost.

You have to fix the recurve on your own 42D. Because from what ive seen, nobody from schrade knows how to sharpen knives without gouging the blade near the handle. Never bought one yet that was sharpened without a recurve that wasn’t supposed to be there. All the way from a slight, to a ridiculous recurve. So we must fix that ourselves my friend.

In that group, I'd say the Master Hunter is actually the odd man out, so it starts out at quite a disadvantage. If the Cold Steel participant had been the SRK San Mai III it might have evened things out some. To me the Master Hunter is better suited to lighter camp tasks, and tasks like skinning and dressing, slicing and prep tasks. Definitely much more hunting oriented. In this group the SRK is a formidable contender and much more in the Falkniven class. Pity it didn't get a run.
I was also surprised to not see any ESEE representation. Any reason for that?

She can’t sharpen a convex grind was her problem and the fact that she said her favorite knife in the woods is a cold steel in aus-8 which tells me she’s not the person to take knife advice from.thought about getting the 3v hunter until Benchmade came out with there 200 pukko but it’s sold out at least for the last week every day I check DLT Trading and knifeworks to see if it’s in stock no luck yet.I hate gerber knives but the strongarm in BD1 looks like a decent blade for the price one of there very few winners as for shrade there pretty much gerber not my cup of tee bad steel loose handles another miss shrade.
