Ya exactly bud there's nothing wrong with it and I'm the type that actually uses my knives and at times very hard. People also complain about 154CM but I used 2 knives while deployed made of them and they saved my life, literally.(Benchmade)
Castle Bravo there are allot of vets that watch these videos and blow money on knives. Not everyone you encounter online is a keyboard call of duty champion some people have actually seen the real thing. You have no clue if this guys for real or not.

For the poet fishermen guy I HIGHLY endorse the Yojimbo 2 or Yojumbo and the Benchmade pocket strop. I worked 3 years in the grocery store freezer department unboxing all the pallets we received. I had to break down all the cardboard we ever received to fit it into the Baylor compressor and let me tell you. My Yojimbo 2 worked like a champ and never failed me. That thing is a Xacto knife on steroids. The only thing is you need to be mindful of how fragile the tip is. If you drop it on concrete tip down it WILL chip. The strop is necessary to maintain the edge and only takes about 10 minutes max.
Originally called 1080+, but it really isn't much different than O1 tool steel except it doesn't have tungsten. To get the two steels to give you their maximum possibilities you must heat treat them in a controlled heat oven. The high manganese percentage in O1 gives it the property that makes me use it the most is I get O1 with the 0.20% vanadium allows me to hold at austenizing temp of 1475 for 15 minutes to get carbides from the tungsten and chromium. Vanadium at that small amount doesn't make carbides, but restricts grain growth. The Manganese allows me to grind it to almost finished because if it warps when quenched you have two to three minutes to straighten it before it sets up. A vice and pliers are at most you'll need.
@@MountainFisher You really can't go wrong with either one of those. Very forgiving steels in every aspect but corrosion. I HT both with a propane torch and a bucket of peanut oil and can get good enough results. 1084 is also another good one.
@@eugenevictortooms4174 Try bluing it using Birchwood Casey Super Blue to resist rust. There is a trick to applying cold blues and to keep it going on nice and even. Use either OOO or OOOO steel wool or fine Scotch Brite to apply the blue. Clean the knife with lacquer thinner/acetone/MEK or denatured alcohol. Do not use regular paint thinner as it is actually a little oily because it is distilled diesel, hence the "Distilled Spirits" name on the label. Great for starting charcoal in your BBQ by the way. If you have put a mirror finish on your knife use OOOO steel wool or very fine Scotch Brite. When the blue has dried buff with clean steel wool or brush with a brass toothbrush sized brush. Do not brush with a steel or stainless brush because they scratch the surface of the blue.

Thinking along the lines of that question relating to the Tuff Lite... I just received my Spyderco Smock from Knife Center and thought it would fit the bill as well.
I would like to add the Kizer Crocotool as a perfect small survival knife in a Altoids tin. It has S35VN steel construction and can opener,bottle opener and wrench cut outs in the handle.👍😎
IMO, the best steel for a survival knife is 420HC. It’s tough, it’s highly corrosion resistant, it’s cheap, and it sharpens easily. The number one most important feature of a knife is how sharp it is, and the last thing in the world you want in a life-critical situation is a dull knife made of a steel that really requires access to bench tools to properly sharpen. You want a steel that is field-expedient, that can be sharpened quickly and easily under adverse conditions with marginal sharpening materials. 420HC hits what I think is the perfect sweet spot. It may not have the edge retention of many of the latest crucible steels, but it’s a lot better than you have been led to believe.
David, I’m really loving this series, as even a longtime knife guys can learn new things too! I’ve seen you hint at EDC smaller fixed blades sheath options like the Ulticlip and Mummert clips. What other options would recommend, even for pocket carrying? Thanks very much for your time!
DCA I'm with you on the CPM3V. You need to start pushing for more companies to use it in folders. Benchmade straight up missed the dunk when they botched the heat treatment on theirs.
For the hollow ground wharncliffe, the Yojimbo is a good option. I have also been looking at the Spyderco Canis. It has a bit of a skinnier profile and a short hollow grind but a longer blade. However, it is $50 more than the Yojimbo which doesn't make much sense to me.
Hey David, my future father in law is a working man that works in a very dusty shop. He uses a Kershaw launch 4 as his EDC. I'm looking for a new knife for him in the future. Something that is great for breaking down boxes fast, but easy enough for maintenance. Maybe washers? Also the launch 4 is not a recommendation or inspiration. lol
Last week you did a chef knife set on a budget. If you had to suggest a cooking knife set on the high end what would you suggest? Maybe 3-5 knives that could tackle all your needs but at the premium price point. Want to start a journey into a “forever” cooking knife set and can tackle piece by piece. Thanks!
I’m with you on steel except 1095. Low price, far superior performance in both toughness and hardness and simpler heat treat make 8670M the clear choice. 👍
Id have to say out of all the knives I've had cpm cruwear is the easiest to sharpen. I can sharpen it even on regular sandstone quite easily. Plus it strops like a dream also.
DCA I know you like specific questions so I will fire one at you. Looking for a recommendation for a fixed blade EDC carry, 2 to 3 inch blade preferably with a high end steel, thin profile, micarta handles and a sheath that will allow scout carry or double as a pocket slip. I like either a wharncliffe, sheepsfoot or tanto blade shape. Made in the USA is a plus. What would you suggest that would fit the bill?
I'll second this question, but for me would be slightly more specific - all the same except sheepsfoot / modified sheepsfoot only and USA/Japan/Taiwan made only. I'm a little more open on handle material except no rubbers or plastics.

Hey there DCA, I have a question: Once upon a time I purchased my first knife, a very affordable Gerber Mini Remix framelock, which I sadly lost after several years of daily use. That original Mini Remix, with its smaller sheepfoot style blade and minimal handle, has since been discontinued. There are some newer versions of the remix available but their handle styles, blade shapes, or combo edges just don't really do it for me. I loved that sort of minimal styling, no nonsense edge, classic blade shape, and especially that open pivot. My question for you is; do you know of any folders out there today with any similar design characteristics of my first beloved Gerber Mini Remix? Thanks P.S. So I have about 100 knives and still I’m looking for my grail knife..it should be classic drop point, about 3 inch blade, 4 inch handle, liner lock folder..I’m pretty cool with any steel as I can sharpen so that’s not really an issue..flipper or thumb stud..even Lockback is cool..do you have any suggestions?

Hey DCA. Can you make a recommendation for a lightweight EDC folder that’s 2.5 ounces or less with an approximately 3” to 3.5” long blade? My preference is for a tougher locking system other than a liner lock. Mid to mid high range like S30v or similar at highest preferred. I don’t need the M390 of a super steel. A drop point profile with a flat grind is preferred. Basically, I’m asking about Bugout alternatives. Perhaps something less expensive. Thank you!
The requests for hollow grind recommendations in this video got me thinking. What are the benefits of a hollow grind as opposed to a flat grind and vice versa. I'm thinking more of high or full flat grinds. In my experience both can be very efficient grinds for slicing and cutting. Generally speaking are there any particular benefits or draw backs to one grind vs the other. Love the show and the channel by the way. This is my favorite channel for knife content. PS: to the guy with 40 knives ..... try harder 😁.
for me, hands down the best survival steel is CPM 3V, some people say they want great edge retention but i say if you break your knife edge retention means nothing, in a survival situation you are likely to need your knife to do things it was not made for....strength is my concern and its all about 3V!....just my opinion!

I currently use my pocket knife but I feel like it takes too long for me to pull it out and put it back in my pocket . Also, I don't want to 'scare ' my customers. I would go with a Spyderco UKPK or Urban Lightweight (kcoti.com/2YW6DbA / kcoti.com/34QCnlQ) or the detent joint Small Archaeo from ArtisanCutlery (kcoti.com/2WOPBuK). Non-locking but still can be flipped open, safety from close thanks to the flipper tab, and a steel pin which can be inserted to fix the blade in place. -DCA

I’m looking for a work knife with about a 2 - 2.75 inch blade and a full sized handle (I wear a small/medium sized glove) for reference i find my cjrb ria fits my hand about perfect with just a little bit of extra handle sticking out. I’d prefer a sheep’s foot blade but it’s not a necessity. My price point is below 150 bucks.

For scale my hand covers the entire handle on a RAT 1, blade length is irrelevant to me (I like big or wide blades personally) I prefer USA made and carbon steel but I'd settle for the "right" import! @@knifecenter I'm in the Navy so my knives see all kinds of use and abuse in my professional and personal life. I regularly need to cut: webbing, pallet straps, rubber hoses, fire hoses, thick cardboard, cordage of varying material and thickness up to 4", rubber gaskets, clear brush for shooting lanes etc basically everything short of food prep, and I don't ever pry with a knife. It's frequently the only tool I have on hand so I use it quite often
20 fixed blades and 20 folders. I forget about more knives than that. I’ll be looking for something and find a tucked away shoe box or ammo can full of blades. It’s awesome, it’s like Christmas!😂🤣😂🤣.
Hug also makes a mini fixed blade that would probably outside of the sheath fit in that tin but it's a hawk bill knife they make a they make a hawk Bill and they also make a clip point

I'm addicted to crossbar locks so the Deka is the leader for me. Yojimbo has a little more handle real estate though, so it depends on what kind of grip you are looking for. -DCA

Whatever happened to the Spyderco Para 3 lightweight in Cpm-Spy27 that was released last year? It seems like after the first delivery that all the knife dealers have been out of stock. I have a pre-order for one from around June of 2020 and I am still waiting.

Sooo I bought an ADV Harpoon fixed blade in N690, Andre says it’s not as tough as the D2 version but more stainless...so what is the toughness comparable to? And is it tough enough to baton with?
N690 is close to VG10 or 154CM. It is tough enough to baton with but I wouldn't recommend doing this stuff with folders. It is very harsh on mechanical parts.

@@JensenAzotea D2 is in a very weird place. If you say something like 20CV or N690, the manufacturer is implied. With D2 it is not. So D2 varies greatly in terms of corrosion resistance, toughness etc than anything on a market really. I actually own D2 knife with tougher blade than Benchmade's 154CM and a couple with much worse both toughness and edge retention. US-made steels tend to be more consistent.
I use and abuse my high end knives. My Rockstead is scratched to hell. My Anthem is worn out well. My Sabenza is no safe queen. However, the BK 62 is definitely a real work horser.
Properly heat treated 1095 has been fantastic for me 👍

My favorite outdoor knive of all time is the Benchmade Nestucca. Discontinued, but you can find them on Ebay.

80CvR2 is some pretty amazing steel for a fixed bush craft/survival blade.

I've got a Winkler belt knife in 80CvR2 & it cuts like a demon. Great steel but it's very sensitive to rust.

Just picked up a Gerber Principle in 420hc. I've been truly impressed by the steel.

Id have to say out of all the knives I've had cpm cruwear is the easiest to sharpen. I can sharpen it even on regular sandstone quite easily. Plus it strops like a dream also.
Had some great experiences using AEB-L and A2.
DCA I know you like specific questions so I will fire one at you. Looking for a recommendation for a fixed blade EDC carry, 2 to 3 inch blade preferably with a high end steel, thin profile, micarta handles and a sheath that will allow scout carry or double as a pocket slip. I like either a wharncliffe, sheepsfoot or tanto blade shape. Made in the USA is a plus. What would you suggest that would fit the bill?
I'll second this question, but for me would be slightly more specific - all the same except sheepsfoot / modified sheepsfoot only and USA/Japan/Taiwan made only. I'm a little more open on handle material except no rubbers or plastics.

Once upon a time I purchased my first knife, a very affordable Gerber Mini Remix framelock, which I sadly lost after several years of daily use. That original Mini Remix, with its smaller sheepfoot style blade and minimal handle, has since been discontinued. There are some newer versions of the remix available but their handle styles, blade shapes, or combo edges just don't really do it for me. I loved that sort of minimal styling, no nonsense edge, classic blade shape, and especially that open pivot. My question for you is; do you know of any folders out there today with any similar design characteristics of my first beloved Gerber Mini Remix? Thanks

So I have about 100 knives and still I’m looking for my grail knife..it should be classic drop point, about 3 inch blade, 4 inch handle, liner lock folder..I’m pretty cool with any steel as I can sharpen so that’s not really an issue..flipper or thumb stud..even Lockback is cool..do you have any suggestions?

Hey DCA. Can you make a recommendation for a lightweight EDC folder that’s 2.5 ounces or less with an approximately 3” to 3.5” long blade? My preference is for a tougher locking system other than a liner lock. Mid to mid high range like S30v or similar at highest preferred. I don’t need the M390 of a super steel. A drop point profile with a flat grind is preferred. Basically, I’m asking about Bugout alternatives. Perhaps something less expensive. Thank you!
The requests for hollow grind recommendations in this video got me thinking. What are the benefits of a hollow grind as opposed to a flat grind and vice versa. I'm thinking more of high or full flat grinds. In my experience both can be very efficient grinds for slicing and cutting. Generally speaking are there any particular benefits or draw backs to one grind vs the other. Love the show and the channel by the way. This is my favorite channel for knife content. PS: to the guy with 40 knives ..... try harder 😁.
for me, hands down the best survival steel is CPM 3V, some people say they want great edge retention but i say if you break your knife edge retention means nothing, in a survival situation you are likely to need your knife to do things it was not made for....strength is my concern and its all about 3V!....just my opinion!

Hey David, love the videos. I have one for you. I'm looking for a small fixed blade knife that I can stick in my waist tool bag that I carry for work. I currently use my pocket knife but I feel like it takes too long for me to pull it out and put it back in my pocket . Also, I don't want to 'scare ' my customers. I would go with a Spyderco UKPK or Urban Lightweight (kcoti.com/2YW6DbA / kcoti.com/34QCnlQ) or the detent joint Small Archaeo from ArtisanCutlery (kcoti.com/2WOPBuK). Non-locking but still can be flipped open, safety from close thanks to the flipper tab, and a steel pin which can be inserted to fix the blade in place. -DCA

I’m looking for a work knife with about a 2 - 2.75 inch blade and a full sized handle (I wear a small/medium sized glove) for reference i find my cjrb ria fits my hand about perfect with just a little bit of extra handle sticking out. I’d prefer a sheep’s foot blade but it’s not a necessity. My price point is below 150 bucks.

Hey David, what are your recommendations for a convenient scout carry fixed blade with a handle suitable for XL hands? For scale my hand covers the entire handle on a RAT 1, blade length is irrelevant to me (I like big or wide blades personally) I prefer USA made and carbon steel but I'd settle for the "right" import! I regularly need to cut: webbing, pallet straps, rubber hoses, fire hoses, thick cardboard, cordage of varying material and thickness up to 4", rubber gaskets, clear brush for shooting lanes etc basically everything short of food prep, and I don't ever pry with a knife. It's frequently the only tool I have on hand so I use it quite often

I'm addicted to crossbar locks so the Deka is the leader for me. Yojimbo has a little more handle real estate though, so it depends on what kind of grip you are looking for. -DCA

Whatever happened to the Spyderco Para 3 lightweight in Cpm-Spy27 that was released last year? It seems like after the first delivery that all the knife dealers have been out of stock. I have a pre-order for one from around June of 2020 and I am still waiting.

If you could only have one fixed blade and one folder. Which ones would you choose?
Sooo I bought an ADV Harpoon fixed blade in N690, Andre says it’s not as tough as the D2 version but more stainless...so what is the toughness comparable to? And is it tough enough to baton with?
N690 is close to VG10 or 154CM. It is tough enough to baton with but I wouldn't recommend doing this stuff with folders. It is very harsh on mechanical parts.

@@JensenAzotea D2 is in a very weird place. If you say something like 20CV or N690, the manufacturer is implied. With D2 it is not. So D2 varies greatly in terms of corrosion resistance, toughness etc than anything on a market really. I actually own D2 knife with tougher blade than Benchmade's 154CM and a couple with much worse both toughness and edge retention. US-made steels tend to be more consistent.

I use and abuse my high end knives. My Rockstead is scratched to hell. My Anthem is worn out well. My Sabenza is no safe queen. However, the BK 62 is definitely a real work horser.
