Love love for Nostradamus. Print this: in 20 Years It Will be beloved and considered a masterpiece for rock and Priest fans as well. Top 5 Priest Record for sure.
Big fan of Nostradamus. Always liked the slower version of Judas Priest. I'd give it an 8 out of 10
When I first heard Nostradamus, I dismissed it as overblown. I revisited it earlier this year and fell in love. Since then, I've listened to it around 15 times. It's an adventurous album with a wide variety of sounds. I enjoy listening to it during long commutes. I'll give it an 8.5 out of 10.
Loved it from the beginning.Really like it when a band does different things.Don't need to hear like AC/DC where everything sounds the same
I know it’s about to get crapped on but I have always loved this album. Maybe it’s because I’m as much of a prog/concept album fan as I am a metal fan, but there is stuff on here that’s far more interesting than a lot of their other stuff to me. It requires attention to appreciate it though.
Having just watched it I’m happily surprised at the opinions, and Gary absolutely nailed it, and I’m 56.
Mostly what I’ve heard from fans I know personally and from people online who don’t like it is “I played it once when it came out and never listened to it again”. Yeah, that’s not gonna do it. It’s dense in the best way. It’s not Breaking the Law with a simple accessible riff, it’s more like Dream Theater where it takes a lot of listens before you can really even begin to absorb it all.
Thanks for covering this album. You briefly touched upon the use of Nostradamus in metal, so there is no way I am letting go of this opportunity to mention Nikolo Kotzev's effort (I see there was a live release this year, haven't gotten around to that yet...) with Jorn, Glenn Hughes, and more: ua-cam.com/video/2Xk5o-7Q8m8/v-deo.html
Ranking Priest's Nostradamus is difficult, because it relies on the premise "can we pretend that all these intro-fillers don't exist when we mark this album". If I could give a mark to a hypothetical edition with only the "proper" songs, I am somewhere around 7.5/10. Extremely strong beginning and ending to the album.
I expected this to be 6 guys trashing on this album, but I should have known better. I’ve always liked this album. I’d maybe trim it down a bit, but it’s got some great stuff, it’s adventurous, and definitely needs to be listened to with an open mind.
Agreed.
It took me about 25 listens thru to "get" it.
A dark, but beautiful record.
Zeppelin 3 took me two decades to truly appreciate.🤣
@@ognir66 it’s funny to think about how many albums we would probably like if we just gave them the proper time. And it’s funny how time changes the way we feel about things sometimes.
I absolutely love this record! A top 10 Priest record in my book. I think the characters of Nostradamus and Rob Halford parallel each other in my aspects.
...Rob singing actual opera...it's cool...I like it
Good show gentlemen, I have all their 70's and 80's catalogue, plus Painkiller. I've heard the Ripper Owens stuff, it's good too but I've never heard this album, more homework. 😀
I have tried so many times to get into this album, and I just can't even sit though 20 minutes of it. No doubt I'll try again a few times but for me I can't find any joy in it.
This album gets too much hate. There are some really good songs on here and Rob’s voice sounds great.
Why is that when a band keeps to a formula they are uninteresting, when they grow old and play music more suited for their age they become yesterday's news and when they really try something different most complain it's not their cup of tea.
I think that Judas Priest along with plenty "older bands" actually had quite good later days.. Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Michael Schenker (all his projects), Paul Simon, Magnum and all kinds actually had quite good catalogs overall. Sure. You can point at their biggest classics and say they are better than the later day material but I don't see music that way. I find that very limiting.
Judas Priest has been an active band longer than many of their fans have lived. What exactly does people expect from anyone in that age? I am very glad we had Rob's return and the albums that has come even if my favorites are still in the past. Nice to see this episode!
Stratovarius wrote their album Visions about guess who
Always liked Nostradamus and still do. Bought it upon its release back in the day. Giving it 8/10.
Great album!! My favorite Priest album!!! Have the original vinyl and cd's of this masterpiece! 10/10
I love these deep dives into an album, one minor complaint is that unless you are actually playing small clips from the songs you are referencing, or the pieces of the songs the panel members are referencing, it's hard to really have a frame of reference. Like most, once we hear an album, we only know the melodies and we don't really remember the names of the songs.... Especially with concept albums we're basically it's just one long song anyway. otherwise cool.
Do Queen and Paul Rogers Cosmos Rocks next as that came out and poof was gone with a quickness without any talk of since.
Meh
+1 love this album. Sure it's bloated and a little overlong, but agree is wonderful with plenty standouts, 'Alone' a personal fave. And fer my ears many of those interludes are album highlights and essential to the album experience. Easily an 8.5
I think it’s going to be like “The Elder”& “Night In the Ruts” . . And I’m noticing “Done With Mirrors” recently for Aerosmith . . I never had too many complaints with this beyond all the interludes (a couple are necessary, like the prelude to “Pestilence & Plague”), “Lost Love” & “New Beginning” . . Yes, it’s still bloated. I’d say 7.5 . . But much like “Topographic Oceans”, I gotta be in the mood.
Lost love is a song of acceptance. Nostradamus loves and accepts his ability to foresee the future. It is a love song from Michel Nostradamus to his alter ego Nostradamus who only comes into his life during dream states when he is foreseeing the future. He loves and accepts that part of his soul.
That's interesting to ponder, I love how the song goes into Persecution & all of Don Aireys shrill space-y keyboard sounds during all these songs it sounds like he's opening a portal 😂. I just would single out Lost Love as my least favorite, if there had to be one. Which is odd because I think New Beginnings is a slam dunk & it's similar to Lost Love, more of a ballad & towards the back half of Disc 2 just before the climax of those last 2/3 songs. Rob in the chorus of New Beginnings is just so powerful
@@Gary-5642 both are great songs. New Beginnings is a pivotal song in the sequence and again a song of acceptance and love for who he has become and being comfortable with life moving forward.
I break it down on Lair Of The Alchemist- Judas Priestcast episode if you are ever interested.
I too deleted most of the intros a few duds and burned a killer single cd
Well Dan, I can tell you why I dislike this album and why it doesn’t work for me.
And I hate saying this, Rob Halford’s voice doesn’t work with symphonic metal for me. It’s a shame and I hate saying that because he was so passionate about this album. But symphonic metal is known for some of the best and most beautiful voices, and Rob is too gruff and to me he has no operatic qualities to his voice.
It’s also not mixed as-well as a lot of symphonic metal.
I’m glad so many like this but it’s not one I pull. I give it a 4
Fair point.
Well stated. I agree 100%, including your 4/10 rating.
Should also be noted, I LOVE "Music From The Elder" I havent been on a Kiss-kick in awhile & i didnt have anything prepared so i didn't wanna derail myself & talk for twenty minutes about how awesome The Elder is 😂😂 similar albums tbh, I think if you like one you're bound to like the other
I don't dislike this album; however, I don't like it either. It's about a 5 for me. The album is 1 hour and 42 minutes long. Similar to the latter-day Iron Maiden albums, the sheer vastness of the album suffocates the listeners ability to find any memorable songs. In my opinion, the reason that many fans dislike this record is due to experiencing listener fatigue when trying to get through it in one listen.
Nikolo Kotsev did 2 albums about Nostradamus that Joe Lynn Turner and Glenn Hughes are on.
It is noteworthy that this is the final KK and Glenn album. I always liked it as well and got when it was released.
I think the reason a lot of people dislike this album is the length of it.
So glad this album is getting some love now. The Sea of Tranquility guys crap on it so much.
I got the vinyl at Best Buy. 600 bucks now huh? I still wanna keep it.
It is a good album. I skip the intros but the songs have the priest quality. For me Nikolo Kotzev's Nostradamus is a little better. A concept album too but it sounds more like rainbow. I like both .
I don't get the hate I love it
I can't bring myself to ever listen to this album again. I just can't.
This album is too long and has some sonic issues but I really love a lot of the songs and I prefer it to Angel of Retribution and Redeemer of Souls. Rob gives a great account on this and KK and Glenn tear it up for the last time. 7/10
Don't like the album , but still like the discussion 👍
Not a fan. However, I think if Priest had done a concept record in the late 70's, it likely would have been pretty good.
I certainly respect other opinions but for me, it’s a 3 out of 10, it doesn’t excite me at all like other Priest releases.
I quite like it. Priest do symphonic metal?
Driver has a song called Nostradamus....it's not opera but it's sung by Bobby "Rock" Rock.
The best song on the Project Driver album by M.A.R.S.
Can you tell by the prophets words! Great album.
A few months ago (after I went over the edge for this record) I bought a Nostradamus book that's got basically all of his writings & "premonitions" I really wanted to read one of the fragnents out of it & try to warp it into "NOSTRADAMUS PREDICTED JUDAS PRIEST" but I just could not find anything that would've worked at all 😂😂
Priest has been my fav band since 79 - 80. But just not a fan of this album. Ill keep giving it chances. Maybe one day . I also grew up loving Kiss and i hate The Elder. So not the biggest fan of concept albums. Except for Quadraphenia by The Who
Killing Machine is a killer album !
I like the album and also agree that the intros were unnecessary, and it would have flowed better as one single disc.
Also, of note is that this is the final priest album not to be created by AI. From what I understand the band actually composed the album by themselves, without the aid of any technology.
The last four priests have been assembly lined directly from the robots.
Listening to this album is pure torture. Like having a tooth pulled. These ratings are crazy. Where is Chris Alo when you need him? This is a 3/10 and that is being generous.
thanks for the comment it’s certainly not to everyone’s tastes!
I like it better than Redeemer or Rocka Rolla as is,trimmed a bit I might like it more than Point,Angel and Shield.
I don't like it because you don't listen to Priest for something like a concept album. I believe that they always wanted to do a double album and I think they thought that if they were to do a concept album so the label could not turn down the double album like they did with Twin Turbo.
But Apparently it’s better than Painkiller and their best since Screaming For Vengeance Lol. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. They’re in the minority though. Only the two Ripper Owens albums are rated below it on on Rateyourmusic.
@@JCStorm76 Me too. Nostradamus is a terrible idea for a concept album. A better idea would have been either Paradise Lost by Milton or the Inferno by Dante Alighieri.
4/10 for me. Wish I could get into it because I’m a big-league Priest fan.
the dudes saying this is better than painkiller are high
Painkiller is 1000 times better than this.
Visions,Death,Prophecy, Pestilence + Plague were all good tracks, but there's plenty that aren't good.
I dont think its the best, but I like it more than Invincible Shield
Haha you must be joking. Invincible Shield is 100 times better than this
I think the Kinks should do Rasputin.
I never cared for this album. I listened to it again 6 months ago. I thought it would never end. Not good at all. One of their worst. Way too long, boring and only a couple decent songs.
I think the first record is great, the second is weaker.
Don´t shit on Nostradamus, it´s a great single. Persecution on side A, title track on side B. The rest of that bloated abomination I can easily live without.
i know the album split the guitarists up
The panel is insane, the album is boring, lack of riffs, some decent sweep picking, Halford is tame.
I really tried with this album. It's boring. I made a tidy 5 song CD from this which was good. The rest, meh. Halford's vocals: bland and monotone.
I agree with you. There’s maybe about twenty minutes of good music buried in there. I’m surprised by the way these guys are mostly gushing over it. I feel like I’m being punked watching this video. It sucks for many reasons Dan. It’s WAY too long. Its boring. Forgettable. It just plods and plods. Hardly any speed. The interludes are unnecessary and it 2008 was about 20 years too late to do a concept album. When that guy said he likes it better than all those albums including even Painkiller which is a masterpiece I almost threw up.
4/10
@@JCStorm76 Punk'd? Agreed.
@@fumaku9726Yep Lol
Dan, you want to know why people hate this album? I'll tell you why - because it's BORING. When I pick a heavy metal record I want to be EXCITED, NOT BORED TO DEATH. Priest are not the band I go for some concept symphonic bullshit with strings and choirs. I want to rock, and they make me feel bored, annoyed, dissapointed. I've tried to listen through the whole album several times but never succeeded. Once I even fell asleep right at the begining and suddenly woke up in the middle of the album when Rob screamed something very loudly. Then I thought to myself - I'm done with this record once and for all, this is pure torture.
Overall, I rank Nostradamus as one of the worst Priest albums, maybe only Demolition is even worse. I give it a 2/10.
Agree with all of that. Maybe my rating of 4/10 was generous
Really not a dark horse album except a dark horse pile of crap. 1 out of 10
Lyrics are boring. Nostradamus 100 times. Never liked it.
Bloated and boring. 3/10
in my opinion this album is TERRIBLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Far from as terrible as the two Ripper ones...
