    It's also fasinating that they addressed the at least 40% of all domestic abuse is cops long before it was known.

      I think you’re probably well-intentioned, but this is a misreading of the data. It is not that 40% of all domestic abuse is cops, but rather that 40% of cops self-report “marital conflicts involving physical aggression during the previous year.” policing.umhistorylabs.lsa.umich.edu/files/original/5528df2d5b5c33cfeaa930146cfe20ccb5cad0cd.pdf

    Fun fact: There was an original pilot from 1989, made in America, that was filmed as a 92 minute TV movie, and was meant to lead into a series, but it was never picked up.
    It was called 'Nick Knight' and starred Rick Springfield in the lead role.
    Then in 1992 CBS decided to do the series, but they retooled it and produced it in Canada with a completely new cast (except for the actor that plays Schanke), they reused the movie plot for the first two episodes, and changed the name to 'Forever Knight' ...and the rest is history!

    • @surpriseandterror9698

      Nick Knight is such a massive downgrade from Forever Knight that I'm forced to believe that the execs looked at the pilot and passed solely because the title had no juice.

    I just need to say that the guy in the bowtie (aurther) pronounced Schanke reasonably well as if it were German. But since his name is 'skanky' instead, its great because Schanke is being condescending to someone smart enough to pronounce the name how it should be on his first attempt. Great writing imo, for characterizing Schanke as an ass further. Love it, I see why you missed it.

    • @keineahnung2868
      @keineahnung2868 7 місяців тому +6

      As a German guy I missed it too. Since he didn't truly say it in a German way, which would include an "e" at the end. Where Arthur said "shank", like shanking someone. I dunno why I wrote this, must be my leftist brain

    I also thought that Arthur, the forensics guy Schanke hassles, was going to turn out to be a more significant character. Then I saw that Arthur is played by a George Kapelos and this is his only credited acting role, so I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that someone behind the scenes just thought it would be fun to give John Kapelos' brother a bit part. In hindsight, I can definitely see a family resemblance.

      Yeah. I guess not much is known about Hieronymus Bosch and he probably doesn't have any known living descendants who might have taken legal action against the producers of Forever Knight, leaving the writers free to take whatever creative liberties they liked. Still, it doesn't sit right with me that they'd take a real historical figure and based on nothing, randomly decide to portray him as a r@pist.

    • @dkecskes2199
      @dkecskes2199 7 місяців тому +2

      I looked Bosch up because this got me so curious why they picked him. He is from Brabant, which later eps will reveal that is Nicholas' original home. (The character's original name is Nicholas de Brabant, and changes slightly throughout the centuries to be Nick Knight in the 1990s.) And Bosch lived in the mid 1400s to the early 1500s, so Nicholas could have met him at about the age of 275.

    Maybe not in Canada, but in the USA cops will answer your phone.
    At least 20 years ago when more folk used land lines.
    Like a vampire, if invited in they can do what they want.
    Now, with cell phones, if it rings they can tell you to answer it and if you don't you're not complying with the law.

      That and sometimes people would want their landline phones answered whenever it rings, and given there was about a 60 second chance to do so until you missed the call forever, you maybe would be cool with anyone in your home answering, so you could get to it in a few minutes. Kind of depended on the situation though, my 90s household got on the answering machine/caller ID bandwagons early for reasons.

    It's interesting a character who is an immortal vampire from a MUCH more conservative era grows into a more progressive person. Is it because he's been separated from humanity? It's it because he's lived long enough to see all the changes and realize his upbringing was wrong? If either is true, why aren't all vampires like him? Was he uniquely progressive prior to being turned? He does seem to care about humanity more than other vampires. A lot of great thought-provoking concepts on display throughout the series, but especially in this particular episode.

    I think you underestimated how radical this episode is. You caught the feminism angle extremely well, but I think you missed the ACAB angle. This is an episode of a TV police procedural in the early 90s where a cop is not only the villain, but also shown as a domestic abuser while still be in a place of power and being extremely respected by his peers. It shows how even "good cops" like Stonetree's assumptions of their fellow officers allow for systematic abuse of the system.
    Also other than the police being domestic abusers & systematic abuse of women, a lizard owner letting their pet hang out of their shirt is the most realistic thing in the episode.
