Do you know how hard it is to make friends in grad school? You just kind of end up hanging out with your roommates and committing crimes against humanity in Peru.
One thing I've noticed about the scene where Herbert suddenly rejects the Bride is that it only happens after Dan calls her a monster. I don't know, could just be the insane script of this movie, but I like to think that's what it meant. Another situation of Herbert being insanely jealous and possessive while also craving Dan's validation and not getting it.
bride of the re-animator is my favorite genre of horror movie: a sequel where not only did the main character not learn from the first one, they actively double down on the bad decision. triple down, even. it's so good. i have very normal and chill feelings about herbert west
They cut Hill's psychic powers from the first movie, but there are still several scenes in the final cut of Hill clearly "hypnotizing" characters--including West.

Funny little theory I’ve always had for why Herbert is back is very simple- homie’s been shooting himself up with reanimator juice from day one (great cut scene on that in the og) so he just straight up wormed his way outta there. This films such fun I love it so so much, even though there’s just no structure. Those two doctors are married, they’re MARRIED! They’re literally the most toxic couple and yet! I adore them so
Jeffery Combs himself has described West as asexual, which feels right to me. his only love is the scientific pursuit, and Dan is just easily manipulated into helping him. not the most positive ace representation, but maybe my favorite, lol.
You were right! The poor Bride really did get done dirty in this movie. She basically speedruns both the original Frankenstein monster and his bride's character arcs in one movie. :(
Dan's big flaw is that he can't accept death. He doesn't want anybody to die (specially attractive women), and that's how Herbert controls him "come on Dan! I absolutely love Bride of Re-Animator. It has the Bride of Frankenstein vibes, sure, but they also took the time to base some of the visuals, at least a little, on the original Lovecraft stories. The war scenes and the graveyard monsters at the end especially. And now I'm led to understand that I need to get around to watching Beyond Re-Animator within the coming week. OK.

If the movie had a cohesive story as far as motivations and what happens throughout, I would say that Dan had been traumatized by the loss of Megan to the point that when the bride came to life, he projected his feelings of loss and wanting Megan back on to both the woman they lost in the hospital, and to the bride. It would fit a theme we often see in movies but this one doesn't seem to have the foresight to come up with that and probably just left over script inserts.
I feel like you're setting yourself up for a bunch of recommendations for some kind of drowning-puppet-centric horror franchise (as soon as somebody finds or makes one)
I'm a little mad you covered the needles up, I get SOME people don't like seeing it but dang, you're covering the glowing green reanimating agent! its the best effect in all the movies...aside from the gore
Really like the lighting in this one. It's severe and makes it look more like Midred is in an abandonned room leaning into the illumination of one bare light bulb (an aesthetic echoed with the background, which, *chef's kiss*). Midred's face does get a little blown out at points, though, so maybe turn down the f-stop on the camera a step or two and use a bounce card to fill in the underside of the face so it doesn't get lost in shadows from the decreased f-stop (while still maintaining the difference between light and shadow). That may also allow a higher light angle which could prevent them from reflecting in the glasses as much. Regardless, their hair also looks great in this lighting. May need to take a screenshot to my barber to say, "This, this is what I've been asking for."
I don't know if it's the lighting, the hair, the glasses, or obviously all three, but you Mildred look like you jumped out of this movie in this video. And it's awesome.
2:46 there is actually a deleted scene that was supposed ton be at the end of the first film! it doesn't explain how Herbert survived but he just did (he shows up while Dan has Meg's dead body in his arms and Herbert just comes in and says "He didn't kill me, he didn't have the guts" 😂 not exactly explained but it's canon to me!)
I frequently put on yt videos to listen to while I work. Funny you mention being 7 years old for if this movie scares you. Cuz that's when I saw it, and yeah, the Bride crumbling apart at the end genuinely scared the piss out of me, and still kinda gets to me. But yeah, great review of a great piece of Yuzna schlock.❤
On the one hand, I feel like the discussion of the movie whose DVD brought us the Reanimate Your Feet music video will have to be even better than this. On the other hand, "I don't care if puppets get hurt; I just care if they get wet," sets an impossibly high standard.
Bride is a hotchpotch of ideas taken from other movies and stuff lifted from the original story. The whole "war" thing was the first world war in the original (Chapter V I think), but with Reanimator the movie being set in the approximate present, they needed another war.
I love all of your videos but something about your tone was extra hilarious in this one. Particularly when you do the voice of Dr. West casually stealing dogs or putting the conversation on hold to make eyeball monsters 🤣
The Re-animator films are arguably one of the better adaptations of Lovecraft. Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna admirably junked the racism from the source material while ramping up the dark humour in regards to the sociopathic Herbert West. Unlike Victor Frankenstein who loosely inspired the original character, West is ultimately lacking a conscience; continuing to do his experiments even as things descend into gory lunacy where rats fight severed sentient appendages and heads flap around with bat wings to berate him as a stupid biped. Fun times!
More doctors should use that diagram to highlight the parts of your body that are fine or fucked. It would help SO much in the understanding. Thank you for a brilliant video. Haven't laughed that much in a long while. Also, kudos for the contextually appropriate sausage.
Maybe the story makes sense if viewed as a hallucination experienced by Dan in Arkham Asylum for the Cinematically Insane? The visuals are part of the entire wonderful package that is Scardey Cat's. Thank you, Mildred, for all the work you put into these videos. "All Cops Are Jason" 👍
Picked up a 'Da Star of Da Channel' Shirt and the Kitty logo one. Excited for my shirts to get here and desperately await a 'Summer of Sphere Heads' and/or 'Best Feminist Herbert West' future shirt. Keep up the good work Bobby and Mildew.
Hey I dunno if it was intentional or not but I actually really like your lighting in this! The visible highlight and shadow is way more interesting and dynamic than flat studio lighting imo, but it also works *so* well with your shadowy backdrop, as well as with the dramatic lighting in the film clips! 🙂
I read it. I read all the visuals. I pause a video and rewind it to read the visuals I couldn't focus on reading while listening. I find the little jokes that flash on the screen for a few frames, frameskip back, and read those too. ...but yeah, often I like to just lie in bed and listen...
2:12 it actually is explained how West managed to survive being strangled to death in two of the deleted scenes! There was a scene about Herbert injecting the watered-down version of the reagent into himself in order to prevent being hungry/tired, which presumably revives him at the end of the first movie. The *other* deleted scene on the other hand has West saying something along the lines of: "No, Hill didnt kill me; he didnt have the guts." which hints that Hill's heart/body stopped working mid strangulation, possibly due to the mysterious(?) gas that almost had everyone passing out or just from too much reagent. (sorry for so much detail, I'm a reanimator nerd)
Dan was never for a moment in any of the movies a good guy. He's just a spineless sidekick to Herbert who only occupies the focal position of a protagonist.
I gotta say, the grad student up too late studying to be sane look is perfect for this video. The direct naked bulb overhead lighting is a great touch.
There were deleted scenes in Reanimator that showed Herbert West surviving, also, apparently, he was using his reagent on himself to stay awake. Meaning his reagent does deter death, but only in the living. Alas, _Re-Generator_ is not the name of the series.
Great video! I like the longer format (but the shorter videos are great also so don't feel like this is a request to change if you're not intending to :) ).
Dan being in an abusive marriage with Herbert is basically the only thing directly taken from the original story other than some names. The unnamed narrator (basically dan's role) lives and works with Herbert for like 10+ years despite a truly immense amount of weird bullshit going on in his life thanks to it, including Herbert murdering a guy just to reanimate him, going to WWI together just to get bodies, etc. Though other than the necromancy I guess they're not that much worse for each other than a lot of straight couples so who can say.
I don't know if I regret being such an easy Bobby Dook mark. But I absolutely am that. I love Mildred's research and opinions on movies. I'd seen a bit about this movie, but while people did talk about Herbert and Dan's messed up Possessive/Stooge love affair, there really wasn't enough discussion about pitying the bride. I liked that. I liked hearing that. (And watching that. I do listen to a lot of Scaredy Cats videos, but only after watching them at least once first.)
I was drinking when milllie said the bit about "dude Megan's dead" and then "ohhh yeah you're right damn I forgot" etc and just... sprayed my drink.. all over the room.. Be you forever please spooky Mildred, just gold.
Yeh West is likely unkillable unless dismembered. There's a bonus scene in the first film where he regularly shoots up with a diluted version of the serum.

Mildred’s home! Glad you can put out videos again!
25:10 That's one of my favorite little creature designs. Like it's cute and vomit-inducing all at once. Aww.
Dan was never for a moment in any of the movies a good guy. He's just a spineless sidekick to Herbert who only occupies the focal position of a protagonist.
That thumbnail terrified me
I thought it was that ukelele-pedo again for a sec
I gotta say, the grad student up too late studying to be sane look is perfect for this video. The direct naked bulb overhead lighting is a great touch.
There were deleted scenes in Reanimator that showed Herbert West surviving, also, apparently, he was using his reagent on himself to stay awake. Meaning his reagent does deter death, but only in the living. Alas, _Re-Generator_ is not the name of the series.
Great video! I like the longer format (but the shorter videos are great also so don't feel like this is a request to change if you're not intending to :) ).
ditto
6:01 - As the guy who logs these videos onto the unofficial Letterboxd, I'm gonna make the the call and say this is a wet puppet video.
just got here, haven't watched video yet, but just!!! i've been looking forward to this, thank you mildred! : )
i want whaetver they had in the writing room of this movie
move your dead bones reactivates my sleeper agent... you could say it reanima.... no i shant say
Bride of Frankenstein is such a tragic figure.
west injects his own elixir into his veins so maybe he is incapable of death
I was drinking when milllie said the bit about "dude Megan's dead" and then "ohhh yeah you're right damn I forgot" etc and just... sprayed my drink.. all over the room..
Be you forever please spooky Mildred, just gold.
Holy shit, the dude whipping the dog doll(?) around like that got me bad. I totally get it, it's just so goofy.
Yeh West is likely unkillable unless dismembered. There's a bonus scene in the first film where he regularly shoots up with a diluted version of the serum.
it honestly never occurred to me that there could be bobby duke haters. I love Bobby Duke so much, he loves rent free in my mind
