I was in an extremely similar situation. I was admitted to a low-paid place, that later had not one but 2 scandals happen after I left. The first time, I was like 10, dealing with a massive depression and grief spike that my mother couldn't handle it herself. My father was working so he couldn't take me in. That first time was okay, and I got a little bit better. But the second time... Let's just say I should've spoken out about the incompetence thing sooner. Was taking an "as needed" medication... they fed it to me like my other day and noon meds. I slept through each day, missing meals, only for the night staff to say, "We can only give saltines and peanut butter." That was a near week long cycle before CPS was called, as the idiots blamed my mom for this. I never went back, but I should've spoken out sooner.
The place is called St. Mary's in Maine. So yeah, Look up if you wish.

I was put in a psychiatric hospital in high school after I got extremely drunk and took a razor blade to my wrists. Doctors at the hospital stripped me down and saw the cuts. Almost like they were punishing me the entire time. Was really fucked up. I was only in the mental hospital for a week but it felt like prison fr. The therapists there were really rude and judgmental. It was just a fucked experience. I feel like it still affects me today with my relationships with people. I’m better now but just don’t have a whole lot of people in my life.

My parents said "keep him" and I got stuck for weeks. I was barefoot without a coat and they were trying to force me to wear flip flops in winter snow and walk half a mile to aa meetings. The hangover lasted like three days. It was some junk. On paper for years.

I wound up getting checked into a psychiatric ward at my local hospital after a bout of "Suicidal Ideation", which is apparently when you go almost all the way, but don't actually try and end it. I had bombed college and was freaking out about the few thousand I owed, and ended up in a bathroom with a gun. I put the gun down and went there for help, but basically it wound up being after check in you just kinda... were left alone? The schedule was pretty similar to Katz's, basically wake up really early, a few head counts and meal time, and you could go outside to smoke once a day, if you were a smoker (you didn't get to go out if you weren't), all the rest was free time with nothing to do. There was a single TV with no sound but subtitles, and some like, lobby chairs to sit in. They let me bring some books, so I spent most of the time reading, but all the other folks in there were pretty nice. Hospital staff was always acting like we were going to start going apeshit, but everyone in there were just... people who were having a hard time. We had like, 2 people who supervised the common area and did paperwork, but I only saw a doctor twice in 3 days. There was a guy in there who wound up there because he was a vet volunteering at a soup kitchen or something and got in a scuffle because of his anger issues and someone insulting vets, and that guy wound up doing more than the staff. He went around and checked in on everyone, advocated to the staff for our needs and kept the mood relatively high. The hospital, meanwhile, lost one of it's disabled patients relatively expensive canes and refused to get them a new one until the vet started raising hell and threatening legal action. When it came time for me to go, the hospital tried to keep me there longer, even though I voluntarily checked in, because they hadn't gotten around to actually trying to see if the meds they gave me day one helped. They bill you by the day for it, and tried to keep me there another night to get more money, but the vet managed to get them to do their job. I get that they are understaffed, but all the ways that they failed us because of that made them money. I can't remember the vets name, but that one guy actually caring about us did more than the hospital did.

stayed in the mental hospital for 10 days and it was awful, so glad to be out. they generally keep you in there for about a week to make sure you not going to kill yourself but they also prescribe you meds and they need that week to make sure you're not going to die from those meds (or that what they say). It was a really nice break from work, only thing bad is that we didn't have our phones and all we had for entertainment were dvds that were donated to the hospital and cable tv

If they were, and the service was bad, they could go elsewhere - market efficiency. Mental hospitals are provided by government budgets or the patient's family in most cases, who either don't care or can't afford better care. @@Jawsomest that's not how it works - the government sets the budget, and the quality of care is a result of the budget. It sounds like you want more funding for mental hospitals - perhaps an admirable goal, but it's got nothing to do with capitalism.

I was having a really bad life, my twenties I got diagnosed bipolar 2 and I was not handling it well and was suicidal so I admitted myself and it really helped me I finally got to talk to a counsellor and it set me in the right direction. It took me about 8 years to get my mental situation under control and I am about a decade behind everyone my age it sucks but I figured getting it under control would be better than dealing with it for the rest of my life going nuts and flying off the handle at random. I met a lot of great people in there and just like he said we all say I hope I never see you in here again. I was in an out of psychiatric hospitals for about two years. Kids were constantly beating up staff or each other, screaming at obscene hours of the night when everyone is trying to asleep, or other things. I almost got killed in the hospital several times from kids stealing keys from staff and trying to charge at me with them angled at my neck. There was blood on something or someone almost constantly. And I don't mean splatters, it was pools on the floor or beds or chairs and clothing soaked in it. It was fucking awful. Some times in the hospital were fun, but others were miserable. I went in with psychosis and PTSD and instead of it helping my issues it made them worse and now I have PTSD from the shit I saw in there. There were barely any staff and when one kid was acting up and needed to get restrained it would cause a chain reaction making the other kids need to intervene with other kids.
