The Truth About Doberman Pinschers - The Jaded Dog Trainer

  • The Doberman Pinscher. Once bred as a fierce and noble personal protection dog, known as "The Tax Collector's Dog", is sadly now the "world’s most marginal ottoman with legs".
Before we proceed, let’s take a moment to address the fact that this man is named "The Jaded Dog Trainer", for a reason. He’s jaded. It’s in his name. And we would also like to point out that these videos are intended to provide lighthearted entertainment, and should be treated as such.
Without further ado, we give you The Jaded Dog Trainer's insight on the Doberman breed...
He opens the dialog by first sharing his love and admiration for these dogs. He even goes on to explain his personal history with the breed, as a trainer and handler of these "man-eaters" (just one example of our clear lighthearted use of terms ... If you are affiliated with the working dog industry you know that “man-eater” and “our dogs eat people” is a figure of speech. I digress).
These badass dogs have a lineage of nobility and excellence. From WW2 and beyond, they have been loyal protectors to their owners. Unfortunately over the years, as with many breeds, some of the characteristics that made these dogs what they were best known for, have been selectively bred out of the dog. They are no longer the "world's finest protection dog" as they once were known to be, but rather a house dog, family dog and/or bred for "show".
In any case enjoy the rant from our very own, The Jaded Dog Trainer, on one is his favorite breeds: the Doberman Pinscher.

I’ve been around a lot of dogs but the most intimidating dog I was ever around was a Doberman named prince. He was massive and all muscle. His owner was a man on hospice. I was a medical equipment tech. I knocked on the door and all I heard was something walking around the house that sounded like a horse. Old man opens the door and out pops a head comparable to a miniature horse. Looks at me with those devilish eyes and demon pointed ears. He’s just staring at me and I could tell he was waiting on something. He was waiting for his owner to invite me in to know I was ok. Soon as I was invited in he turned into a big baby. But I know how to read dogs body language and I know that prince was ready to go at any sign of aggression on my end. I think he was trained because I don’t usually get those killer dog vibes from most people and their animals.

Dobermans are still magic. The human that’s connected to their leash needs to understand what they have and act accordingly.

Liability and free market. When a little kid gets bit you have a massive law suit on your hands. Medical bills, pain and suffering and if any permanent scarring on the child you will be paying for the rest of your life. Kinda hard for us gen x folks, when we got bit our parents usually said - "we told you to leave the dog alone" and they would spray that stinging stuff on your wounds and tell you to go outside and play. But I digress, most people do not need man eaters these days, easier and less liability to carry a gun. So free market demands are for dogs that are more social and less liability. Breeders supply that demand.

Couldn’t agree more, I was at a bite work seminar a couple weeks ago with my European Doberman. The decoys said they usually don’t see Doberman’s like this.

I remember my Uncle's Doberman. His name was killer, suited his personality. He actually took it from the children on the streets, and walked with him through life. Killer was an old school soldier. Loyal, powerful and defensive. Actually saved my uncle in street-style dangerous situations. He lived in a sub-economic poor area, known as the Cape flats. I don't even see much Dobermans in our country anymore. I get excited when I do though! The clubs, A.K.C, K.U.S.A and even F.C.I, destroyed the original genes of these marvellous creatures. I'm sure Louis Doberman was in deep thought about his creation: to save the family, not play tea party.

It is fun to watch AKC dog shows on TV. When they announce the breed description... it's just hilarious.
About Dobermanns ... surely there are some excellent lines of them out there, right?

The dog should pass a temperament exam such as a BH before engaging a Schutzhund field plus you want a certified training not a want be someone who has not titled in sports before. You don't want a fear biter of any breed trained! Schutzhund works the breed in Tracking, Obedience with 3 retrieves and Protection. It was a breed survey for the German Sheperd turned International Sport for all working breeds! You will find Schutzhund people that actually are shocked when they see a Doberman that will work and do sport!

Dobermanns are doing just fine. Dobermans are doing terrible. Breeding is very strict in Europe, while in america Dobermans are just another McDog mass produced product.

Well first my Doberman was well trained (sadly dead now). Actually the trainer told us he was just so easy to train you should have no problems. This is despite the fact we got him as a one year old dog previously owned by a bikie gang that mistreated him. My guess from watching your video is they wanted the 'killer' type Doberman you talk about. He was not like that. We soon leaned he was a velcro dog, refused to be left outside, and was basically a sook. He loved our nieces and nephews when they were children and played with them endlessly - you could see the delight he took in it. Badass he was not. Although I remember one time my drunk uncle made a threatening move to my mum. His normally languid eyes were instantly alert and gave a low growl I suppose was a warning. He did not stop. Instantly he pounced. My uncle ran at Olympic pace chased by the Doberman. When past the gate he stopped, turned around, came back inside and resumed sitting next to us with his usual languid eyes. I chatted on the internet with a German Shepard trainer and he said the GS he trained would not have given a warning growl. We did own a GS before we got the Doberman and I can attest to that. The thing that stands out to me about the Doberman we had was like the GS he was very intelligent. But it was a different sort of intelligence - almost at another level. He had a sneaky, conniving, manipulative intelligence geared to getting you, first to love him (which we did), and secondly to get us to do what he wanted (which on reflection may have been the reason behind the first trait). All that said I would get another Doberman again without hesitation. He really did love our family and extended family. It's the sort of affection you never forget. But badass devil dogs, in my experience they are not. Although they will protect their owner if required.

Dobermans that will work is very small compared to the other working breeds. The trending dog of present is the Malinois but the USA will screw them up like they have done all the rest! Once you lose temperament you lose the breed! It's that true! Most of the AKC could careless they care about the temperament in the show ring! The DPCA is all about the show side of the house. AKC talks out of both sides of their mouth either it's a working dog or not! I have titled everything in my Kennel in IPO so I know the breed. The DPCA had Ray Carlisle and John Soares years ago! The trending dog now with the AKC is the Mal people that can even train such as AKC beginners are screwing the breed up. Training the dog in drive is the key you have 3 ways to train your guy food drive, prey drive or with a toy you get more drive. The dog learns better in drive and you have better results. Then we use compulsion when dog has performed task enough to where he knows the task at hand such as the sit or down! It's not rocket science but this method works and I've titled AKC to UDC Obedience to Schutzhund titles. Breeders in the DPCA are breeding for one thing show dogs. If you are looking for a good Doberman you go 3 generations back on each side of the Pedigree for working titles this will ensure you success for a good dog!

You can thank the AKC for this. I feel the exact same way. My first working dog was a Doberman and he just couldn’t cut the mustard. Wasn’t anywhere NEAR the level of the working shepherds and Malinois. At first I didn’t understand why everyone was crapping on Dobermans in my training club. I learned pretty fast this is only the breed I was raised to believe was a badass killer. They are beautiful aesthetically.

I feel your pain. I trained dogs for pay. I learned on and I
LOVE the "dobies". They're very handler sensitive. I've lived helper/ decoy/ trained some real bad asses. I love them. But you have to have a sense of humor. Gsd's were bred for compliance. And Mali's are like Dobies, (more reactive) but they lose their sensitivity when they get
"flash" angry. 🤭 I've got the scars to back up what I write!

European dobermans still are bred to work. They have larger muzzles, thicker bones, thicker neck. They also have more drive. American breeders bred those characteristics out to form a more elegant breed. American Dobies look more like a greyhounds now. Such a shame.
