I’d rather face a dog like Zeus than a crazed, angry pit bull. Tall dogs like this are like extra tall (as in almost too tall for NBA) people. Kind of clumsy. I’m 6 1’ and 235 lbs. From the side I could push Zeus over and pin him way easier than I could get my hands on angry pit bull.

When I was a delivery driver, I came up to a house where, upon the door opening, I was greeted by a Great Dane that just about looked me in the eye. Biggest dog I have EVER seen. The guy who ordered the pizza looked like the type that wouldn't hesitate to enforce a Do Not Tresspass sign and here was this massive, unleashed animal, so I was just a little nervous.
And then that great big beast looked up at me and flopped its whole enormous self into my torso so I could give him scratchies and pets. I almost fell over on the porch. Absolute sweetheart of a unit and a fond memory.

In my childhood I lived with a great dane. He was the best buddy for me. He even saved me from drowning although he was afraid of water. I managed to get to the water as a young child and he ran around me and barked to inform my parents.
When the cats occupied his place on the couch, he was too shy to shoo them away. He was such a great companion and we were heartbroken when he passed away at the age of 9.

A counterpoint: I experienced a lot of death as a kid, pet and human. Life is short. Very short. And it’ll always end with death. His front feet were flat on the ground and when he got up from it he got so much taller. When he stood on his back legs he'd tower over my friends dad who was taller than my dad (6'2 or 6'4). That dog was massive but such a sweet heart that loved everyone. Oh and he was like a dalmatianish kinda color pattern.

Yes, they do have shorter life spans. The breed, like most purebreds, is bred a particular way to achieve “standards.” Which includes a as frame like his that the heart cannot sustain for very long.
She mentioned he runs around for a little bit and gets tired. It’s because his heart literally cannot support his body. It’s actually quite sad. But as long as people continue to pay for breeds like this, it will never stop.

I have a Great Dane too. He’s not nearly as big as Zeus though lol, but he’s still large… I mean, he is a giant breed lol. I get a lot of “saddle” and “horse” jokes too. GDs are stubborn and very laidback dogs. They are protective when they need to be though. I’ve never had to worry about the black bears in our neighborhood, because he’s about the same size as them and always scares them off. I never imagined that my first dog would be a Great Dane, but my husband is a giant too (6’4) and he didn’t want a small dog since he was worried he’d trip over them… so we got another giant to add to the family. Love the breed ❤️

My dad is 6'4" and our baby Dane has knocked him over... so I feel your "worried he'd trip over them..." comment but it didn't end up that way for us!! To be fair, grandpa likes to spoil the baby... which hasn't worked out great for him since she now knows he'll let her get away with nearly anything. We're trying to train him though (dad, not the Dane... she's well trained already!). :D

Fun fact: His heart is not significantly bigger than a usual dog's heart. The differences between breed's organs are nowhere rational to the differences in the size of the skeleton. For example, Chihuahua's brain and eyes are too big, Great Dane's heart is too small. Even thought the body tries to compensate this in various ways, his heart will always be too weak. It will be damaged pretty soon due to the pressure.
This is why he has no stamina at all and won't live longer than 10 years (Which would be the ideal maximum). Dogs of moderate size live 12-16 years, smaller dogs will live longer.
This is an edit to state my point in a better way. 🐾

we just got a Dane and I love him so much. they are the sweetest! Ours is a "mini" Dane, kinda the runt of the litter at 110 lbs. He has a birth defect in his front right paw so its way shorter than the others and he doesn't have a real ankle, paw, toe or paw pads. He requires special wrapping every day to protect it and a prosthetic to get around. but we dont mind the work because he brings extra happiness because he knows we take care of him. His name is Nemo because why wouldn't it be. He makes everyone he sees happy... unless he gives you a great dane punch with his prosthetic, then you're not as happy lol

Mine was like that too. I think it’s common in American breed Great Danes, which mine is of as well. The American breeds are crossed with Grey Hounds, which is what gives them that shape. The chest becomes less pronounced as he’s started to fill out (he’s 4 yrs old now). I think Zeus is just 2 yrs old in this video, and that’s about the time they stop growing vertically and start growing horizontally, which is when he’d start to fill out too.
