I'm going to try it your way... I make the pistachio pudding according to instructions with milk and all...then I fold in drained crushed pineapples, crushed, cool whip, pecans, marshmallows and let it chill... that is why I like watching other people recipes to learn different ways of doing the same thing.
If you do try this recipe, let me know if it tastes the same as your recipe and if you like it. Just be sure and let it set in fridge several hours or overnight so it has time to set up, so it is light and fluffy....the marshmallows change consistency and I don't know if it's because of the pineapple juice, but it is the coolest thing ever. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!! Caren
@@ccjohnson6798 yes ...I will let you know... but you make a good point about the juice possibly changing the consistency of the marshmallows.... maybe that's why my mom drained the pineapple juice... and it stayed the same consistency a little longer than what you notice the change in your marshmallows.... you just may be on to something...thank you so very much for taking the time to reply.
Both this and the lime jello stuff (with canned pears & cream cheese) are a staple in my family around the holidays! I have a friend where the staple in _her_ family is "purple stuff": a pink & purple layered dessert made with Dream whip. :-) Ah, 50s recipes...
When I was a little girl (well even now as a middle aged woman - LOL), I would spend hours looking thru my mom's cookbooks. I was so fascinated with the pictures of the perfect little housewives in their aprons cooking in their 50s and 60s kitchens. I read every recipe, cover to cover. My husband has always teased me about reading "cookbooks". I love all the retro recipes from my mom and grandmother. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!! Caren
My mom made this for holidays. I still make it a lot with half of all your ingredients except 2x the Cool Whip and a jar of maraschino cherries halved. If I am expecting a crowd I sometimes add a can of drained mixed fruits. Yum !!!

I love this recipe of yours and love that you don't use a mixer❣️ I hope you get through this Holiday season without your Beloved Mother, I know how hard it is, hang in there 💞💒🌹🌹🌹💐💐😇😇💫🕊️🕊️🕊️✝️💕
My mom made something with lime Jell-O as well and used cottage cheese and crushed pineapple without the juice and Cool Whip. You don't have to wait for the jello to set up. We called it green stuff. You could whip it up in no time if you forgot something for a potluck. I miss my mom too. She left us to live in the Kingdom of Heaven in 2008.
Yes I use lime large jello 1 can crushed pineapple, beat with hand mixer on slow chucks of cream cheese looks like cottage cheese. Add chopped walnut/nuts if you want I usually don't but have. Want to try this recipe with pistachio pudding, making half the amount.
I am so sorry about your dad. I lost mine in 1995 from kidney cancer. He was only 52 at the time. My dad loved it also. Even today, I was telling my husband about some candy my dad would love. I wish I could tell you that the heartache goes away but it doesn't....but the memories do get sweeter with time. I always feel closer to my parents during the holidays. I wish you peace and comfort this holiday season....sending u a virtual hug!!!
Angela Jones Beauty I also know it as Ambrosia salad. My mum made it with sour cream, crushed pineapple, mandarin segments and marshmallows. Easy peasy and soooo TASTY
Ambrosia salad doesn't use pistachio pudding or crushed pineapple. I think 5 cup salad and ambrosia salad are basically the same, but not the same as this Watergate salad.

Just remember to make it night before or several hours so it sets up light and fluffy and it will be perfect. I hope your family enoys it and you have wonderful holidays!!
Mmmm I love Watergate salad! I could eat that whole bowl full all by myself! Not really, but I'd sure give it a try! I'm going to go to the store today and make this TODAY! NO NEED TO WAIT FOR A HOLIDAY!
Add cream cheese and fruit cocktail with coconut and the pecans chop with heavy whip cream. That 's the way to make this recipe!! Drain crush pineapple juice then add pistachio pudding .
Wow! Your recipe comes from the Jello box! I thought my mom's did, too, but hers wasn't called Watergate salad. Mom's had the pudding mix, pineapple, and Cool Whip just like yours, but no marshmallow or added nuts. It had a cup of shredded coconut stirred in. To me, that makes it a different recipe for a different dessert. I suppose Jello can have more than one recipe for a pistachio pudding dessert. Really surprised how similar they are, yet different, distinct. We even made a low calorie version by going light/sugar free on the ingredients. Here's to Pistachio Pudding!
I first had it as a child in the 70s, and it was referred to as Watergate salad back then. I have older Republican families who do not Collett Watergate salad because they think it draws attention to the Watergate scandal so they call it pineapple, pistachio fluff.
I love making these recipes of my mother's....it makes me feel close to her and brings back all the wonderful memories of holidays when I was younger. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!! Caren
Yummy! I’m making this tomorrow...I haven’t made this since last year. Everybody has their own way of making it. I make mines similar, “I” drain the canned pineapple juice, add a little more coolwhip and put just a little bit of walnut bits in the mix then sprinkle bits of walnuts for the topping (sometimes I use bits of pistachios) 😋
My mother made it for practically every holiday and I never touched it as a kid. I was probably in my late 30s or 40s before I ever even tried it.... LoL. I had no idea what I was missing out on all those years. Now I know why she loved it so much!!
i have seen this recipe with cottage cheese, and almonds instead of pecans, it is so good, you can also change it to orange jello and mandarin orange or with strawberry, so refreshing! Thank you for sharing!

I've found that using 1 8-ounce container (2 cups) of sour cream or plain yogurt and 1 16-ounce container of Cool Whip cuts the sweetness a bit. Combine the pudding, DRAINED pineapple, and nuts (I use finely chopped walnuts) with the sour cream until well blended, then add the Cool Whip. Mix well then stir in the marshmallows. Cover and chill in the refrigerator overnight. The marshmallows soak up some of the liquid so it's less gloppy.
Autumn Grace Ambrosia is made with sour cream, coconut, mandarin oranges and pineapple and no pudding, while Waldorf salad is made with apples, celery, walnuts, grapes and mayonnaise. Three totally different salads.
For years I tried to figure out my Grandma's holiday dessert, a fluffy black cherry jello with pineapple and nuts. This is it, just with Black Cherry Jell-O gelatin instead of Pistachio pudding! edited to add: It's not the same exactly, her recipe says to drain the pineapple juice, bring to boil on stove, add gelatin, let cool but don't refrigerate so it doesn't set, blend in cream cheese, then the marshmallows and cool whip. So it's a hybrid of this and something else, I guess! Now, here's the kicker - I used the Chrome browser on my phone to look up the recipe, which I found on a food blog, at the grocery store yesterday. About 24 hours later, here it is on my UA-cam recommends :)
I've noticed alot lately that my google seems to be reading my mind...haha. Your version sounds amazing....I need to try that one. Thanks for watching and commenting! Caren
This Black Cherry is jello not pudding. You have to add hot water to it in order to dissolve the crystals or they settle on the bottom of the bowl and are gritty. The other didn't have cream cheese either I believe. I will have to look again. I like to use fruity marshmallows. I make Black Cherry marshmallows and they are addictive. You can actually cut those up and try them instead of the store brand. I have some black cherry juice I use in the marshmallows as well as some plain gelatin, so you can make your own jello as well with it. I bet this would be delicious. I might have some some pots of mixed fruit around here and some of those red cherries. I will try this and see how it goes. And as far as cool whip, I have some real whipping cream. This will be really amazing with all the real stuff in it. It will have a nice strong flavor. The marshmallows need made ahead of time and sit for a day or two to dry out some. IF you can find canned black cherries, that would be great. I might have to bring to boil cause of the gelatin, so it dissolves. BTW, chrome is google and it remembers what you look at the reason it shows up on your you tube recommends.
I’ve made this 5-6 different ways , it’s always come out great and there is never a spoonful left . To this day my sons and I just call it Green Stuff and delicious. My late Wife would make this just about every Holiday for us , I guess it’s just one small memory of her and makes us smile a little more when we have it .
My mom always called it green fluff and it always makes me think of her and the holidays. I'm so sorry your wife is no longer with you but it's wonderful that these things bring back our precious memories 🥰
The secret ingredient and it a secret unless you were lucky enough to know it was the pudding just like the Watergate affair there were secrets. I am 65 yrs old and my mother was given this recipe shortly after the Watergate afair happened!
Here is a trick if you want to present a clear bowl on the table at the end of the meal . Take a brown paper made out of a brown paper bag or use wax paper or parchemin or any other good idea but not foil, and make a collar around the bowl . Then spoon the salad in the bowl . Put the bowl in the refrigerator. Before the guests get in , take the bowl out of the refrigerator , remove slowly the brown paper shirt you have insert in before and then you have a perfectly clean bowl like magic to show on the table . You can also add on the top of your bowl a little touch of red and green with red and green marasquin cheeries or whole rasberries with mint leaves . Make a motif like a christmas tree or a heart or a USA flag or a music treble key or the name of the person who has his or her birthday on that night etc.... When serving such a meal , it is important to give the teeth something to chew on . Otherwise the desert swallows in too easy. Pecan nuts are important and don"t cut the walnuts too small.Half walnuts make peoples happier .
This is the best. Everyone does it different. No no. This is the BEST. I tried the cherries and did not like it.but a few slices of banana good. Only mix when a single serving of this delicious treat
@KC Woolsey ambrosia is usually mandarin oranges with vanilla jello instead of pistachio right? its always an orange tint in my experience, i like both but i love watergate.

That is a fantastic idea about the multi colored marshmallows at Easter...I never think of anything creative like that. I will be making it that way the next time. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Happy Holidays!! Caren
I have made this exact same recipe many times. Putting whole pecans on top is a nice touch. I really like you scraping the bowl. Drives me crazy when half the recipe is left in the bowl. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for a childhood dessert! Luv pistachio!

I grew up on this dessert too... pleasant memories associated with this treat.
My grandma always made this for holidays. She has been gone 11 years this Christmas. I have made it for everything Thanksgiving and Christmas ever since. It just would not be Thanksgiving or Christmas without this! It really takes me back to my childhood holidays with my grandparents.
I am so sorry that she is no longer with you....but if you are like me, I know you probably think of her and feel close to her when you are making it. Happy Thanksgiving!!

I love Watergate Salad! My mom and aunts used to make for reunions.
My mom always use the colored marshmallows, and she added one Granny Smith apple chopped
I think it would be so pretty with the colored marshmallows. I will have to try the apple added too. Thanks for watching and commenting. Merry Christmas!! Caren
This is the recipe I have been searching , thank you 😊
I also make this but I add cherries and coconut. Its yummy!
That sounds heavenly...my mother would have loved that. Thanks for watching and commenting. Merry Christmas!! Caren
I’m sure adding coconut is tasty but that’s more Ambrosia salad than Watergate
My Mom use to make this every holiday. At Christmas time she would add cherries to the top. Red and green. Now I make it. Nice video.
My mom did too. I need to do cherries for Christmas. That would be pretty. Thanks for watching!
This would be great for st .Patrick day dessert 💕
Caren
Purple? You must share!
My mom made this for holidays. I still make it a lot with half of all your ingredients except 2x the Cool Whip and a jar of maraschino cherries halved. If I am expecting a crowd I sometimes add a can of drained mixed fruits. Yum !!!
I always think of my mom and the holidays when I make this. I'm going to try the cherries next time I make it. I bet it will be pretty with them. Thanks for watching and commenting!
My Mom used to make this, but, she put cream cheese in place of the Cool whip... I think she used lime Jell-O. I miss her, ✝️💖THANK YOU for the recipe and the memories ❣️🤣

I think you're thinking of seafoam salad! ❤ Here's a link
www.thebittersideofsweet.com/2013/11/27/sea-foam-salad/
Looks beautiful an scrumptious, thank you

This was one of my dads favorite dishes for thanksgiving. He passed away 2 years ago from cancer at age 54. I miss him so much
I am so sorry about your dad.
I've always known this as Ambrosia salad! I'm the only one in my family that likes it, so I dont have to share!
Lucky you! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!! Caren
Our Ambrosia Salad, had shredded coconut, with no Pistachio pudding! It's a whole different salad!
My mom makes it to not with that pistachio stuff tho or nuts we use yogurt
This salad is so refreshing! It's both a holiday favorite and a cool salad for those hot summer day! It's so pretty in your dish.

I am going to have to try the coconut in it. Sounds delicious. Thanks for watching and commenting!! Caren
I first had it as a child in the 70s, and it was referred to as Watergate salad back then. I have older Republican families who do not Collett Watergate salad because they think it draws attention to the Watergate scandal so they call it pineapple, pistachio fluff.
I remember my Mom making this dish. Thanks for the memory and recipe. ❣️

My family makes it with cottage cheese and it's really good! And I don't even like cottage cheese lol
Finally a person on a cooking channel that knows how to use a spatula and CLEAN out every bit of cool whip from its container. My momma taught me that anything left in its container is wasting! And waisting is the same as throwing money out the window.
Omg.....you too....I think it's my OCD, but it drives me crazy to watch cooking shows where they just pour stuff in without getting every last bit. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!

That sounds good, I'll have to try that. Thanks for watching and commenting! Caren

One of my favorites yum yum yum going to make this.

Great tips and ideas! Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment!! Caren
