I use to make a mandarin orange salad with cottage cheese, cool whip, marshmallows, maraschino cherries, mandarin oranges and orange jello powder. Now I follow a dairy free lifestyle and boy do I miss some of these salads
Have you ever tried making whipped "cream" out of coconut milk? I just put it in my stand mixer with a little honey or maple syrup (just alone it's great, too, just not sweet). It needs to mix for longer than cream, but it's just as fluffy and delicious. To avoid using gelatin, you can use corn starch.
My son-in-law's mother would use cup hot water, dissolve the jello, add small pieces cream cheese, stir, then after cooling add other stuff seems like or something like that. I didn't care for that version. But I did love the pink cranberry fluff version. Use blender or processor to chop raw cranberries fine, add cup sugar and stir in let set,or sugar to taste. Add cool whip and chopped fruit and nuts to taste. Add marshmallows.
Cottage cheese I totally get. Sour cream though, I only use on baked potatoes and mexican food. My mother used to always make a jello salad with Cottage cheese, cool whip, strawberry jello and fruit cocktail. She never added nuts, but I always did.
Another recipe I recommend Del Monte fruit cocktail, pineapple, mango, tub of Cool Whip, a brick of cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk. Make sure everything’s blended in smooth, then fold in the drained fruit. Best served refrigerated
Lime jello; desolve in 3/4 cup hot water then add 3/4 cup cold water 1 cup marshmallow cream 1 cup mini marshmallows 1 cup cool whip 1 small can crushed pineapple drained 1 cup chopped pecans Make the jello (reduced water) and chill till thick but not set. Mix in the rest of the ingredients and refrigerate for about 4 hours. This was really popular in the 50s. This version was my mom's recipe
My Mom and favorite aunt saved all those containers also. They have both passed away and recently my cousin and I were talking about our Moms. I laughed and said "Remember how you never knew what the leftovers were until you opened each of the many containers?" She said "Don't joke about that---I do the same thing!" I enjoyed seeing you make this old recipe. I've made it for years and just always called it "Orange Fluffy Stuff".
I grew up eating this at my grandparents house. My aunt made it but she’d add coconut also. We called in Heavenly Hash! I need to ask her the exact recipe and make it, it’s been a long time.
Try this! Peach salad. Chop some peaches into bite size chunks. Mix peach jello one packet into a large container of small curd cottage cheese. Mix with the peach chunks. It’s not only pretty - a pale peach color - but it is easy and so delicious. Refrigerate til chilled - enjoy!I can eat the whole bowl if I’m not careful!
Thank you, Carol! I'm going to also add this one into my recipes. Sounds delicious! I just miss these salads so much, but when you go to look up AMBROSIA, which is what we used to call it, I could never find it. My grandmother was an AMAZING COOK! We just tried this today (Easter 2023) and it is the best! We've made with cottage cheese before, which is good, but sour cream brings it up a notch or two! Try this, you'll ❤it!
I had the “moldy green salad “ long ago when I visited my brother and his wife. It was fabulous and I have loved lime ever since. I will buy mandarins fairly often as it is an easy snack for my late husband and my grandkids. Every one knows the rule in my house that you do not throw away your citrus peels and you wash the fruit before you peel it. I keep a ziplock bag in my freezer for citrus peels and my favorite is mandarin. It is so sweet, with a strong orange taste and little pith. I use it in orange anything from orange chicken to orange desserts. If you are a cranberry orange muffin fan, black walnut instead of regular walnut and a half or whole mandarin orange peel takes it from good to fantastic! The white pith of the peel is bitter, which is why I prefer mandarin over a naval orange because it has only a very thin layer of pith that doesn’t survive being frozen. But if you are using a peel that has a lot of pith, you can scrape it off with a spoon before or after freezing OR you can grate only the outer layer of the peel before you peel the fruit. I have trouble grating the peel after it has been removed from the fruit so I slice the peel as close to a sliver as I can. If someone has a hack for grating an ‘empty’ peel, I would love to know a better way. My comment has made this seem harder than it is, but I would toss mandarin peel in this salad. Or lime peel in the moldy green salad. Don’t forget grapefruit peel as it has a lovely taste and will complement many desserts. Orange peel is also good with fudge, candied and dipped in any (dark, milk or white chocolate) chocolate. I don’t mean to be rude, making a long comment and suggesting modifications on your recipe. I have wanted this recipe for decades (4?) for so long and I thank you!!!
I made a very similar salad back in the mid 1970's. I didn't use any jello or cool whip. I put fresh oranges that had been sectioned to remove the tough membrane. It had several oranges in it. I put the sour cream and pineapple and some coconut and the marshmallows. It was yummy. I think that plain or vanilla yoghurt would be good substitutes for sour cream. Cottage cheese would be a good choice if it was pureed in a blender.
I still save the butter containers and different ones to put left overs in. They are great to have when you take food to someone else because let's face it, people are rude and don't return your good food savers containers. It cuts down on being angry with your friends and family. LOL
I do the exact same thing! 😂😂 I do use a marker to label and date the contents cause I hate having to open a half dozen containers to find one thing. 😂🤣😂🤣👍

Too yummy!! I made the Raspberry Fluff a week ago. Just absolutely delicious and refreshing. Raspberry jello,, fresh raspberries, cottage cheese, cool whip.
I always like seeing these and a big dinner or a potluck as something a little sweet and a little tangy and much lighter than most of the other desserts. My mother in law I think made all the different flavors but she was particularly fond of strawberry banana especially with fresh strawberries
You are only the second person who seems to know there is a difference in liquid and solid measurement ! This looks good, I’m going to try it with lime jello and pineapple. Enjoy your videos!
Both measure volume, not weight, liquid measuring cups have extra space to prevent spilling, solid cups are exact so that you can level off the top to get the right amount. A cup is a cup whether wet or dry.😊
Love this salad it is refreshing and delicious..sometimes we added yogurt instead of sour cream, plain yogurt or a flavored yogurt. Depending on what flavor we were making. Both are great

Mom and grandma did both also of each and used lime foe Christmas and tangerines for other holidays. The green was a bit firmer and lots of cottage cheese! They are so good! Also my grandma never failed cherry / strawberry jello with fruit cocktail and a dollop of real whipped cream with a cherry on top! 😘
My grandmother taught me to add the drained crushed pineapple & mandarin oranges to the marshmallows 1st so the flavor soaked in.. we then added the homemade whip cream with about 3-4 tablespoons of sour cream added after whipping. Then mix jello, marshmallows w/fruit & whip cream mixture all 2gether. We added chopped pecans on top also.
I'd like to see someone make this in a single serving. Cause if I had free reign of the bowl,I would eat nearly all of it in one sitting, looks so yummy😋😋😋

Mashallah absolutely very beautiful recipe 😋 mashallah good sharing 😊
Made this for a luncheon at my house it was delicious ty
Sounds like an old-fashioned nice salad thanks
We made this every year for Christmas. Ambrosia Salad and Orange or Cherry fluff. Now that Mom and Gram have passed, those salads are even more of a reminder of home. Add a Japanese spice cake and lemon meringue pie and it would be heaven.
All right!!! Looks delicious
Thanks again. Will make it this weekend as kids coming home. Yummy Best Maria
My mother made these kinds of salads all the time. They are so good and refreshing!
I'm 56 years old and have never had this before but I'm going to try it because it looks yummy
What a simple recipe! Looks yummy Greg!
Variations on a theme
Be always loved this salad….it’s just delicious.
I make something similar for holidays, but we call it ambrosia! I use cottage cheese instead of sour cream, add nut topping, and I use jello pudding mix sometimes. I like the banana and pistachio flavors. 😊
Thank you, I was trying to think of that name.
We always called it Ambrosia too.
Yes...that's what my mom called it.
I'm so enjoying all these variations of this recipe. The comment sections are sometimes a wealth of information you'd never find anywhere for any price. Thank you!
@@WhiteWolfBlackStar I agree! I absolutely love reading the comments! Especially reading about everyone’s childhood memories, along with their experiences and variations of the recipe.
I remember my grandmother making this while I was growing up . Thank you for sharing Iam new to your channel and just subscribed I’ll be making this from now on for my grandchildren and your other recipes . God bless 🙏💕
Thank you! Plenty of of childhood memories
Looks delicious! I can't wait to make this "Orange Fluff Salad" dessert.
OK folks! I just made a Key Lime version of this salad... it was spectacular! I actually didn't measure anything, so I'll just list the ingredients, y'all know the drill LOL! Lime Jello big box, Cool Whip, cottage cheese, sour cream, mandarin oranges drained, fold in the marshmellows at the end, and let sit in the fridge for a few hours.
I was absolutely the happiest camper on the block! ✨😎✨ Louisiana and Florida would be proud 🌊
sounds great, thank you for sharing
Yummmm!! I am going to try this for sure!! Thank you so much for sharing!!😊🤗💕💗💖💗💕💗💗💗💖💗💖💗💕
oldie but goodie
I feel like I hit the JACKPOT finding your channel last night 😎 I knew this salad growing up as AMBROSIA, but when you try to find the recipe... I think finally by the 90's I quit searching. I knew EXACTLY what this was when I saw your video pop up. I'm reading everybody's variations. FABULOUS comment section! Thank you Everybody.
I'll definitely get the ingredients and try this AGAIN, my 'experimental cooking recipes' don't always go as planned HAHA Thanks so much, Greg! Your mom has taught you a golden gift with this stuff, I love her already🥰 the world needs MORE FLUFFY SALAD all year long! This type of salad was one of my grandmother's gifts to the world, I just didn't get the recipe.
✨🐇Happy Easter Bunnies, and stay blessed! ✨
Happiest of Easter’s and God Bless
Hi thank you for sharing! I’ve always made this with cottage cheese, lime jello, pineapple tidbits, and finely chopped, roasted pecans. Both sound great!
my Grandmother use to make that for us with pineapple and coconut! Great memory!
