Just got the 6k Pro so I'm slowly learning Divinci before I completely get rid of Premiere. Premiere has been great, but it has crashed so many times during important projects. Boo

I do miss the playback scrolling that final cut had when the blade tool was selected tho and the shortcut keys being able to use without hitting the "ctrl" button. Overall, it hasn't been too bad.

I was a Premiere user from the origin until CS6. When they came out with the program "rental" and the requirements to go online - I stuck with CS6 and slowly fell behind "technologically". Now I'm on a long learning curve with DaVinci Resolve Studio and happy as can be. Lots and lots of "improvements", no requirement to go online, and a reasonable price.
I've been using Final Cut Pro version 2 - 7 over the last 20 years. For the last couple of years, my goal was to switch to the PC and Resolve. I tried to tinker my way into Resolve and it just wasn't getting me anywhere. Finally I was faced with a large but simple project and a mac that was becoming unreliable. It was time to switch. Having a big but simple project was the perfect scenario because I had to do the basics A LOT! When I started that project, I fully expected I might have to bail in the middle and go back to the mac. But by the time I finished, I was never going back. My mac just sits idle now.
One big thing that helped me a lot with ramping was clicking and dragging the zoom percentage in the speed frame window. It makes it a lot easier to see your keyframes and curves.
Glad to see more people are finally making the no-brainer switch. I switched about a year ago now and haven't looked back. Premiere is still installed on my computer but has only been opened once or twice in that time.
Good presentation. Interesting and smart how you put in the plug for Canva 10 minutes in. If someone is still listening to you after ten minutes, you could pitch them anything!
I did the same thing. I lost a GIANT project and just said "nope, done" and switched and even though resolve is free and accessible, i think they do much more for performance and consistency than premiere has done in the last 10 years :D.
I JUST made the switch as I got the Blackmagic Pocket 6K. I literally relate to everything you're saying lol.... It feels like I'm trying to learn how to ride a bicycle again. But the workflow does feel much organized.
Hahahahahah when you have tunnel-vision whilst editing and forget to spam ctrl-s 0:56 is so relatable. Gonna check out Resolve thanks for the video, bro!
So relatable man haha. I'm currently on the "digging through youtube videos for answers" phase. But the more I figure it out the more I love this program. The optimization is LIT though. I'm editing on a 2015 macbook pro and it works surprisingly well.
Great Video Ryan! You earned a Subscriber. When you talked about speed ramping footage. There are two ways of doing that one is the premiere way of doing that by messing with the graph. And the other one is the Final Cut way of doing it by adding speed points. I personally prefer the second one. You need to simply press CTRL+SHIFT+R or Command in case of a mac. And then add speed points and mess with the Retime Controls. You can try it out if you haven't already :)
I switched from Premiere to Resolve when Resolve version 15.1 was released. In that time I have endured many crashes to desktop and numerous frustrating bugs. Be careful nesting timelines - That can crash it.... It has a live save option that will save every single thing you do as you do it. That has saved me a lot of frustration. It's in the app preferences under the user options. Would I ever go back to Premiere? Never. While Resolve can be frustrating at times, I MUCH prefer it over Premiere. I also love that I can jump into Fusion and do some pretty sophisticated effects. Not quite as robust as AE but it's in the same app. I love that. Also the CC tools are second to none.
thank you so much for this video Ryan. I'm among the 1,000s + users of Magix Vegas 17 that seen the upgrade & quickly wanted to know where to go from here. I've weighed up the options & I'm going to get DR Studio. thank you 👍😎
Congrats man. I am in Davinci resolve for about 5 years and I love it. I really don’t need others program for edit. So good choices :) Also speed ramp in davinci si the best. I neved understood why premier is limited if I want to speed up my clip like 5000 or 10000 time
Man this is so extremely helpful! Currently making the switch myself. Wanted to add one other thing when comparing free to studio, there are certain codecs/bit depths that aren't supported. So if you're like me and you shoot with the a7s iii and you want that juicy 10 bit footage then you'll have to get the studio version. But like you mentioned, it's welllllll worth it!
I was in the same boat. Premiere for about 10 years. switched to Resolve in version 14. I always thought speed ramping was easier or made more sense in Resolve...
Seriously thank you for this video. I was just about to restart my premiere subscription but hesitated due to all of the bugs and crashing I experienced which lead me to cancelling it in the first place. I'm gonna give Resolve a try, it looks perfect for my needs.
This is exactly the kind of video people need to hear if they’re on the fence about switching to DR. I switched a few months ago and haven’t regretted anything!
I recommend using fusion/adjustment clips and editing transformative things in the fusion tab, it's much easier to spline and tracking is much smarter in that tab. I pretty much only use the edit tab for basic cuts and everything else I do completely on fusion
Thanks man! I Appreciated this video a lot. I've used premiere for over a decade now & have been keeping my eye on davinci for some time now. This has made me download it and give it a fair go.
Great breakdown Ryan, I’m a resolve user myself but when I’m doing more dynamic stuff with speed ramps I turn to premiere as it is much more reliable in that sense. All Color grading is done on resolve tho 😛
Resolve is my editor of choice. Ive used final cut, premiere and resolve and will always choose resolve. I do still use premiere but only because it is required at the college i attend. All of our film work has to be edited in premiere pro. But outside of school, resolve is my go-to
Speed Ramping in Resolve: Command R / Add Speed point where you want it to begin / Add Speed Point where you want it to End. Drag the Last Point to where you want it in Timeline - this Auto Adjust the Timings. Then Retime Curve - Retime Speed - Drag it to your liking. It becomes fluent as soon as you´ve done it enough times.
The things you showcased in this video literally made me convinced that resolve is the program for me. Lmao I’ve been using premier for several years and the little things are a deal breaker. Now I just need to power through learning the program 😅
There are free detailed e-books, long video tutorials along with practice footage all available to download for free on the blackmagic website. These cover all the pages on resolve (media, cut, edit, color, fusion, fairlight and deliver pages). It's insane that all these are available for free and a lot of pẹpẹ don't even know. In my opinion, it's the most structured way to learn resolve
My impression of Resolve is that it is more of a structured editing process, than FCP or Premiere Pro. One in which multiple editing modalities are easily accessible with modal editing page tools overlapping each other but presented to suit different editor focus. You can for instance apply stabilisation in several different pages, and how you fine tune depends on whether your seeking to maintain a viable framing of the subject, or colourise, grade, or create merged unstable compositions. Learning each pages capabilities and boundaries is tedious but worth the effort because doing so expands your vision of what is possible. But remember if what your trying to achieve isn’t happening, your probably using the right tool, in the wrong page of Resolve.
Personally I think the Retiming and Speed Controls is WAY easier and better in Davinci Resolve. Plus you don't need to nest the clips to use both Retiming and Stabilization.
Thanks bro! This was insanely helpful and necessary as I believe the entire community will be making this shift. It's both exciting and scary to be on the cusp of this new era and platform. 👌Nice work
Biggest reason to switch: no more 20 clicks to rearrange your workspace every time you need to tweak or edit something as in premiere. Dedicated sections which actually remember things.
Adobe always had that. You must have been on a 2017 version like this guy....its 2022 dude... I have 4 monitors and nothing gets rearranged.... plus Apple Silicon support much better - so better performance
Kind of random seeing you here since I've been subscribed to your channel for a couple of years now since you helped me replace a door handle in a Hyundai! I encourage you to switch to Davinci! I use it for my career in video production and it has saved me so many headaches!
"it's a pretty full fledged VFX..." Common mistake from folks that only know about BMD as the color guys. It's fully full fledged and has been a Hollywood industry program for a long time. After Effects is for motion graphics and fusion is for VFX. It just so happens that both programs have enough tools in them to do either job, but they can't compete against each other in either one. The real caveat is that you'll need to learn how to use nodes instead of layers. Once you are good at that though it's a really nice bit of software.
I switched to resolve studio version recently and I’m not going back to premiere pro but most importantly Resolve has their own color space technology which is insane you can get the best & make most out of your footages.
Honestly bro.. thank you for the inspiration! I just quit my 9-5 and I am going to build a freelance film business. Been wanting to make the switch but wasn't quit convinced. This video has me sold!
Man you helped me switch to DaVinci Resolve from premiere! and i'll tell you my productivity has gone up so much! so much faster and less lag. took me a couple weeks to get to the same experience as premiere after watching so many videos on UA-cam
The big reason to switch - security. With Resolve, no need to go on the cloud, ever! If you ever deal with classified or restricted info, you don't go anywhere near the internet.
always feel so good I began with DaVinci when it was at v12 (no Fairlight or fast cut page then) although my laptop didn't have that many high specs and DaVinci too used to crash lol... but now that I have a better machine and DaVinci has also gotten more stable and included more features, all I gotta do is learn to edit even more killer videos like this one of yours. Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences and my what an awesome edit!
Loved this review! Thanks for sharing! I've been using DaVinci for about two years now. I have found the titles/graphics & transitions element of DaVinci to be quite frustrating. Even if you are purchasing assets from something like Envato or Motion Array, the selection is super limited. How do you navigate this? I'd also love to get your input on optimized media vs. creating proxies. I've been working with footage from the Canon R5 and Davinci really seems to hate that lol. Wondering if you have had that issue as well.
Resolve is calling for me.. The only thing keeping me with Adobe is After Effects.. Lower thirds.. Expressions.. I'll have to look into Fusion and how I would approach it on that side
@@byFilipeCardoso not great honestly no dynamic link so you have to export import in and out of AE. Its doable but kinda annoying. Lower thirds and things like that is easy but for tracking chroma etc. Like vfx over edited footage it is a pain in the ass the constant back and fourth. I do trust blackmagic. Eventualyy fusion will catch up
@@Drogado68 Damn! I'll have to look into Fusion and try it out then, because I don't see myself not using some sor of Dynamic Link and needing to export for every change
The only reason I haven't switched yet its because DaVinci crashes in my current computer due to vram being too low. However, I'm upgrading it soon, and I'll definitely switch. DaVinci is superior in every aspect.
nuh...2022 Adobe is better. Also faster, with Apple Silicon support. No PC can keep up against the new Appel Monsters, and Resolve hasn't fully caught up yet
I'm so grateful for this video. I film music videos, create surf content and I'm starting to create my first short-film. Premiere Pro crashing issue is giving me gray hair and I feel it's a program from 1999. I'd like to get into color grading too so I think I'm going to finally join Davinci. Thanks for the video Ryan!
I always tell people before switching to any other software.... 1. Do you have the time? 2. Are the main features you required will be there? 3. Free sometimes is not free. 4. What if you need to do that? Will be easy to get the job done in time? Adobe has the tendency to break things but sometimes they release features that you need and you will endup going back. Example: I also have all Affinity and it is amazing but it misses many important things if you work with others or share files. You can edit in any thing, but a good computer setup is more important then a software. Dedicate SSD drives for catch files, projections, backups, etc. Never do any editing on the same hard-drive your software and OS is. Happy Editing! Good Review!!
It's been a long time coming... but it was WELL worth it. What do you guys think? Would you switch?

I've been using Final Cut Pro version 2 - 7 over the last 20 years. For the last couple of years, my goal was to switch to the PC and Resolve. I tried to tinker my way into Resolve and it just wasn't getting me anywhere. Finally I was faced with a large but simple project and a mac that was becoming unreliable. It was time to switch. Having a big but simple project was the perfect scenario because I had to do the basics A LOT! When I started that project, I fully expected I might have to bail in the middle and go back to the mac. But by the time I finished, I was never going back. My mac just sits idle now.
Man, you don't know how grateful I am right now! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Good to see more people switching to Resolve! I also used Premiere for years, but as soon as I switched I never looked back. So much less headache 😂
Thank you for the input. It's good reference for a beginner user like myself.
I've never evolved past Openshot. Ryan, you are inspiring!!
The proxy workflow is just.... beautiful
100% agree with all this. Been a game changer for me!!
Resolve Studio used GPU and is more faster and less laggy and I've never crashed yet. The free version uses cpu and is much slower
thank you so much for this video Ryan. I'm among the 1,000s + users of Magix Vegas 17 that seen the upgrade & quickly wanted to know where to go from here. I've weighed up the options & I'm going to get DR Studio. thank you 👍😎
Cool man! Can you do a color grading 101 tutorial in Resolve and go to workflow? That would be sick mate 🤙🏼
Coming soon!!
Like 2 minutes in and you've solved the issues I was having. I didn't realize that box for showing what was going on was there, I didn't
Absolutely! Best of luck to you. Couldn’t recommend enough.
I bought it 6 months ago and just started really trying to learn it. Just been so hesitant to switch because I've learned adobe like it's second-hand
Big learning curve, but it’s paid off in every way for me! I’m sure you’ll get there in time!!
Keyraming in Fusion is way better. Fusion is worth learning. Nodes take time to get used to but are way more fun to work with.
Yeah, but you also need to learns about small bugs like planar tracker steady to invert and paint node interaction.
Thanks man! I Appreciated this video a lot.
I've used premiere for over a decade now & have been keeping my eye on davinci for some time now. This has made me download it and give it a fair go.
I think you’ll like davinci :)
Go for it dude. Well worth the learning curve!
But outside of school, resolve is my go-to
0:56 This describes my reaction to that happening perfectly
Great video man, thanks!
You bet!
One step at a time, Im still learning movie maker 😂
Speed Ramping in Resolve: Command R / Add Speed point where you want it to begin / Add Speed Point where you want it to End. Drag the Last Point to where you want it in Timeline - this Auto Adjust the Timings. Then Retime Curve - Retime Speed - Drag it to your liking. It becomes fluent as soon as you´ve done it enough times.
Don’t use speed ramping with retime curve, use the speed point (ctrl/cmnd R) curve use it for easing.
"WTF are nodes?!"- HAHA, my exact thoughts
The things you showcased in this video literally made me convinced that resolve is the program for me. Lmao I’ve been using premier for several years and the little things are a deal breaker. Now I just need to power through learning the program 😅
There are free detailed e-books, long video tutorials along with practice footage all available to download for free on the blackmagic website. These cover all the pages on resolve (media, cut, edit, color, fusion, fairlight and deliver pages). It's insane that all these are available for free and a lot of pẹpẹ don't even know. In my opinion, it's the most structured way to learn resolve
Keep it up bro! I was thinking a long time about a decision like this. You're video makes me pull the trigger, I'll switch
I will be sticking with Premiere since my college is providing it for me, but I will most definitely switch over in the future
That's only reason for me. My job gives it to me for free....until i quit that is lol
Plus you don't need to nest the clips to use both Retiming and Stabilization.
i make cloud timelapse - use speed change daily - sometimes it Adds footage past out point wtf ? happen to you?
Thanks bro! This was insanely helpful and necessary as I believe the entire community will be making this shift. It's both exciting and scary to be on the cusp of this new era and platform. 👌Nice work
Glad it was helpful! Thank you Lee!
Biggest reason to switch: no more 20 clicks to rearrange your workspace every time you need to tweak or edit something as in premiere. Dedicated sections which actually remember things.
Adobe always had that. You must have been on a 2017 version like this guy....its 2022 dude... I have 4 monitors and nothing gets rearranged.... plus Apple Silicon support much better - so better performance
daaaamn I was thinking about making the switch for so long too, now I will give it a go!
I've been contemplating a switch to Davinci as well. In the end I just have to force myself to learn a new program.
Kind of random seeing you here since I've been subscribed to your channel for a couple of years now since you helped me replace a door handle in a Hyundai!
I encourage you to switch to Davinci!
I use it for my career in video production and it has saved me so many headaches!
I switched to Davinci 6 months ago after been using premiere for about 15 years and is great!
Recently made the switch as well. Super worth it!
You'll all switch eventually. All of you. Buy the studio version and use the insane denoise. It's absolutely incredible!!!
I switched to resolve studio version recently and I’m not going back to premiere pro but most importantly
Resolve has their own color space technology which is insane you can get the best & make most out of your footages.
I left premiere in 2019 for Resolve. Haven't turned back since.
Honestly bro.. thank you for the inspiration! I just quit my 9-5 and I am going to build a freelance film business. Been wanting to make the switch but wasn't quit convinced. This video has me sold!
The best of luck to you my friend. All I can say is hard work pays off. Thanks for watching Trevor!!
As a connoisseur of best free alternatives you bet your money I was with DaVinci when I got deeper into video editing
Man you helped me switch to DaVinci Resolve from premiere! and i'll tell you my productivity has gone up so much! so much faster and less lag. took me a couple weeks to get to the same experience as premiere after watching so many videos on UA-cam
So glad to hear that man. Thanks for watching!!
Wondering if you have had that issue as well.
super authentic and real everything has ups and downs, some people havent caught on yet
Resolve is calling for me.. The only thing keeping me with Adobe is After Effects.. Lower thirds.. Expressions.. I'll have to look into Fusion and how I would approach it on that side
DaVinci does have expression capabilities! Fusion is a bit of a curve ball going from layer based to node based. Def a learning curve for sure.
Same. I use for resolve for everything but graphics. AE is way better than fusion
@@Drogado68 how is your workflow integrating resolve and AE?
@@levondarratt787 they can, price wise at least
I'm so grateful for this video. I film music videos, create surf content and I'm starting to create my first short-film. Premiere Pro crashing issue is giving me gray hair and I feel it's a program from 1999. I'd like to get into color grading too so I think I'm going to finally join Davinci. Thanks for the video Ryan!
Suggestion: Calm down on the zoom jump cuts. Its overwhelming - sometimes its ok to just be talking without constant changes.
No
Agreed. Please don't do them. Literally stopped watching and just listened because of it.
yeah, I agree. its good content but its super jarring to watch so I stopped watching and listened
Same
+1. Besides the zooms, the quality on this video was incredible from start to finish!
So cool. Adobe is so expensive and I couldn't afford my favorite hobby anymore. I'm going to dig around in resolve
Good choice!
