Since I’ve started this channel I always put aside the questions you guys ask me the most and one that keeps coming back is How Do I Sell Stock Footage?
Today’s video is about footage licensing and why it is a great and easy way to generate passive income. I will talk about how I got into it, what kind of footage I sell, how it works and how much I make.

Today’s video is about footage licensing.
Do you sell stock footage?
Cheers,
Flo
This was incredibly insightful! It's really great to hear your feedback on what's essentially your own job.
Thanks a lot my man !! Hope you're well :)
I want to try it out, but I always feel like I don't live in place that people want in their footage. But, I'm also learning not to quit or call the race before the race even begins and to give myself a chance. I'll drive up to the mountains and just film with my drone and take it step by step. See what happens.
I think you should anyway! You'd be surprised what clips actually sell. Even random scenes can work :)
Great! Thank you for sharing. I have been doing this for more than 10 years now. Contributing to about 5 stock agencies. My numbers is just about USD900 a year :( Your content and your market access plays an important part. If you are in North America and having North American clients, they pay better than if you are in Asia and have a small market. If you are selling videos of corporate warriors, they are much in demand than fruits and vegetables. But overall, it has been fun and has upped my video filming and production skills.
thank you for the information!
Thanks for watching!!
Can Instagram be used as portfolio link?
I have a few hundred GB of those shots you get during a project that you know you won't use but it sure looks cool (I have a penchant for getting timelapses during shoots), and you know it would look good in someone's project somewhere... I guess the perfect definition of stock clips lol. I've been thinking lately I should go through it all and try to add it to a stock footage library, thank you for the informative video!
If you ever do follow ups/continuation of stock footage based content I'd love to know what types of clips you find sell the most, or most consistently. I'm really curious as to what the market for stock footage is like and what actually gets bought.
These are the kind of shots that are great to use as licensing content for sure!
To be honest it is really hard to now what sells and what doesn't. For me specific landmarks or areas work better than general landscape shots. It just depends on the time of year and what trends too.
Thanks for watching!
May I ask when you send a video does it have to have sound in it? Or do you just colour grade it? You spoke about cutting the videos, how long must the videos you send be?
No sound and usually in log but I can send the graded versions now too. And the clips are most of the time between 5 and 15s, I think the norm is 3 to 30s.
Thank you for your thoughts and experience! I have tried selling stock photos but without any luck so far, but probably because I only handpicked a few photos and the market for photos is probably also way more crowded than for video. Im definitely planning on trying to shoot several clips and photos on my next vacation and see if I will have any luck with that.
Thanks for watching !! Yes, I think photos are a bit different when it comes to licensing. I did it for a while but I wasn't a big fan of the experience and the money wasn't great at all.
Until now I have worked little with stock footage and most of the time it was landscapes (urban and otherwise), while I have always avoided content with actors/actresses or models because I was not sure about the type of contract to stipulate in order not to have problems. with image rights and stuff like that
Licensing content featuring people is always possible but you need to make sure to have the appropriate releases of course as well as contracts prior to putting the footage online. Definitely worth it though if you can!
Thank you for the info! I also want to ask what kind of footage is needed more? Handheld/gimbal/static?
Thanks for watching !! All of it honestly :)
Do you colorgrade the stock footage you provide or provide them in log Profile ?
You can do both :)
How do you split royalties? My friends and I are thinking of doing more stock footage this year and were wondering how to divide up the play
You set it up the way you want at the source :)
Hi! Do you think that with de Sora and eventually others AI video generators, it is a good time to start making stock footage? (Just bought a bmpcc4k and want to make some extra money) Thanks, regards from Uruguay!
Very informative video. I just have a question. Can you sell videos that have people in them, as editorial videos, without having the model release?
Glad you enjoyed it! I am not entirely sure actually as I have only ever done Commercial use.
How long does the clip need to be and if the audio is necessary?
No audio and usually between 3 and 30 seconds :)
I hope my question is not too late after fresh upload, but what about licensing footage to multiple websites, like Artgrid and Filmsupply combined?
If you are with Filmsupply unfortunately you are not allowed to license footage with anyone else.
@@OfTwoLands so also no other footage which isn't on filmpsupply? jeez thats a toll
Can't believe it's been 7 years since Greenland! xx
I know!! Time goes so fast. We need to go back :) xx
Curious, if a video gets licensed, can I still use it for my own personal use, for example on UA-cam?
Yes. You still own the rights :)
Please how do I start to become like you
Cool, so how the intervie looks like? I want to apply to. You had to put all your footage online?
The interview was about what kind of footage I had and the work I had done at that point. Might be different now since it was 6 years ago.
@@OfTwoLands ok, thank's. let's see how it goes.
Hi, Florent, assuming that you shoot in BRAW, I was just wondering how you manage to upload to Filmsupply in ProRes 422 LOG?
Hey, I transcode all my footage into Prores 422 from Davinci and I grade/edit the prores files in FCPX.
@@OfTwoLands Thanks, Florent!
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS BRO!
Thanks so much mate !!
thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching :) !!
Very helpful video! Quick question, just to clarify, you said you post footage from projects you shoot, does this mean you post footage you use in the project itself? There isnt any sort of legal weirdness to that or its okay to post clips from videos you upload and sell or whatever?
Thanks !! When it concerns my own passion projects yes, otherwise it is usually extra footage not used in the final edit or non descriptive footage. Each project is different and you should always check to make sure you are allowed to license some of the content. Sometimes you can actually make this part of the contract :).
@@OfTwoLands Thank you, as always you are the best!
Thanks for sharing! How many clips were in your portfolios at the time of this video?
Thanks for watching !! It's hard to tell, a few hundreds I'd say :)
Thanks for the advice! Great content. What about the talents in the footage? Would be pretty dificult for me to pay them a rate for they work... How you deal with this issue?
Thanks for watching !! This is why you have to fill in a talent release each time.
You can either agree on a fee (%) prior to the shoot or before licensing the content and sometimes licensing the content is actually part of the deal.
And please where can I start uploading footages
Do you have to get permits for your location shoots?
Depends where and the reason of the shoot.
I shoot outdoor and nature oriented video. A lot of it is on state and federal lands. A one person (at most two person) crew shooting for stock footage upload is my plan. Most state websites indicate still photos do not require a permit, but video does. They are likely thinking of a multi-person cinema crew trampling nature, not a hiker with a camera on a gimbal. Still, I don’t want to have my work refused because I didn’t get a permit to record a timelapse of clouds over a mountain ridge that happens to be in a park.
Thank you Florent. Your footage looks beautiful. Can you say how much you earn per second? Thank you for sharing.
Thanks!! It depends on the end project and client. It is always different.
They won't handle B-Roll 'fill' material. It has to be pretty slick for someone else to market and sell your stuff.
True, however they will handle B Roll is part of the actual full collection alongside the A Roll. Ie a documentary or short film.
any videographer using a two-cam set up for stock footage? I have been doing that on my site and looking for someone to be a vendor using 3 cam setups
Can I start with only phone
I have actually sold some clips captured on my phone. Best if you can shoot in 4K. Also, vertical clips are now accepted.
Hey Mate, Love your work.
Do you know how many downloads you had to equal this end sum ?
Love to know the price per $ download i.e is it 50cents or so ?
Let me know!
Hey man,
Thanks!!
Filmsupply works per clip and per license 👍 Not like Artgrid for example.
So one can be $100 or $1000, depends on the end project and client.
Okay! Gotcha.
Any intel on what is a better platform ?
Can you upload your footage that you didn't upload to Filmsupply to other stock agencies or you're obliged to work only with Filmsupply when they accept you?
Unfortunately you cannot, it is an exclusive representation.
@@OfTwoLands thank you for the answer. I guess with Artgrid you can
@@OfTwoLands Thanks for the information. I think that is a bit odd, is it really interesting then ? i mean, you make 9K/year, but maybe you would sell more using blackbox ? or maybe not ?
Great video Flo! Do you just license with film supply? Or do you have multiple sites you use?
Thanks man !! Yes, I only license with Filmsupply :)
Wow great advice 👍 what platforms would you recommend getting into?
Glad you liked it !! I have used Filmsupply, but as I said in the video Artgrid seems to be awesome as well and a few of my friends love it.
I have included the links in the description :)
@@OfTwoLands thanks! What do you think of Black-Box?
@@coyotestudios1 I haven't heard of it actually.
Do you have a tip, first of all to get accepted as a contributor & then to get the footage accepted? I find it quite exhausting, applied by multiple companies, but didn‘t hear back. Getty accepted, but my footage is in review for a long time
Honestly I am not too sure. I was accepted nearly 6 years ago so things might have changed. I'd say a strong and diverse portfolio would definitely help! Topics like tech, people, health are always needed I think for example.
Congrats on being a dad bro.
Thanks so much :) !!

Sir which website do you use to sell yours stock footage?
Filmsupply.
Do you have to copyright, your work, before submitting?
Your work is and still will be yours even after you upload and people use it.
@@OfTwoLands ok , thank you so much !
Hey Flo, have you ever used Blackbox? I was going to start selling clips but then for some reason delivering footage over a FTP server sketched me out and I bailed.
Hey man, I haven't actually and you're the second person to ask me that so I'll have a look for sure!
With FS I either send the footage through their uploader online or via Hard Drive.
@@OfTwoLands Appreciate it! I will check out Film Supply
Hey Nicolas, I have used that platform before and submitting clips through FTP isn’t hard by any means just time consuming. Some errors pop up every now and then but easy to troubleshoot. I would suggest looking for platform that doesn’t require using a FTP server if possible
Hello. Where you selling?
What is the name of the website to sell footage?
Filmsupply, link in the description :)
Can i sell the footage shot on a entry level drone or a camera
It depends on the footage, there is still a certain quality to maintain of course.
@@OfTwoLands can u make a detailed video in tht, cause nobody talks about tht much
Nice vid thanks for the content…$10k is $10, and if it’s a simple hobby , not to shabby to get some extra $$
For sure, thanks for watching man !!
