"Gunsmoke" graced our TV screens for an incredible 20 seasons from 1955 to 1975, setting a record for longevity that few shows have come close to breaking. James Arness played the indomitable Marshal Matt Dillon, who maintained law and order in the Wild West town of Dodge City, Kansas. His portrayal became legendary, setting the bar for TV lawmen for generations to come.
However, what most people don't know is that Milburn Stone, who portrayed Doc Adams on the show, initially couldn't stand Arness. Stone, known for his serious approach to acting, was often at odds with Arness's more relaxed, jokester demeanor on set. From biting an ice cream cone during close-ups to playing pranks, Arness was all about keeping the atmosphere light, much to the disdain of his co-star.
In this video, we'll explore how Stone's initial irritation with Arness's lack of professionalism almost caused a rift in the cast. We'll delve into interviews, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and even fan letters to give you a comprehensive look at this fascinating relationship. We'll also discuss how Stone's outlook changed over time, eventually seeing the value in Arness's methods, and how their contrasting styles contributed to the enduring legacy of "Gunsmoke."
Don't miss this chance to discover the lesser-known story behind one of television's most iconic shows. Whether you're a "Gunsmoke" fan or just love juicy behind-the-scenes tales, this video has something for everyone.

What happened was that when Gunsmoke went from 30 minute Black and White episodes to 60 minute Color episodes, Milburn’s time went drastically down where he became almost non-existent just like Miss Kitty’s. They had meatier parts before and they dried up as the writers would bring actors like Victor French, and others to act as Villains.
What was interesting was that the beginning Milburn refused to do Gunsmoke unless he got residuals from repeated episodes which still continue to this day, and probably for forever.
He said there were too many former TV Cowboy stars and their families who were living in the poor house because they only took a straight salary.

"Gunsmoke" was the best TV Western series I have seen so far. Arness had more charisma and was a better actor than John Wayne.
When 'Festus Hagen' joined the show, he became quickly my favourite. The whole cast was great!

I'm not buying any of this. Gunsmoke ran for twenty years and Milburn Stone was there all the way except for the time he had to leave due to heart surgery. Gunsmoke would have aired longer but it died because of Hollywood's move to the left politically and started killing off what they considered shows with to much gun violence. It was clear that the cast of gunsmoke were very close. Almost fifty years after it ended the reruns are still watched by many. Gunsmoke like all tv back then always taught us kids who grew up and loved it many morals and life listens. TV today like all media is just the opposite. Stop trying to stain the best entertainment that ever existed.

James Arness brought a lightness and humor to the set that balanced out Stone's seriousness. It's interesting to see how their contrasting personalities complemented each other and contributed to the overall dynamic of the show. Despite any differences they may have had, it's evident that both actors were instrumental in making "Gunsmoke" the beloved classic that it is today.

Thanks for another informative video. Speaking of TV western serials, there were two ubiquitous objects that were present in the Old West, but never revealed in TV westerns: horse manure in the streets and outhouses in the alleyways. 🤔 BTW: Roller rinks and bowling alleys were present in the larger towns and cities of the Old West; they, too, were never seen in TV westerns. 🤨

Reading Arness's bio, I came away with the notion he was self-absorbed and uncaring about the other cast member's time. His stunt flying his plane over the set for a long time ruining the shoot was contemptuous. (I watch GS every day)

Milburn Stone was constantly rubbing his face as Dr Adam's when treating patients, even during surgery. That was gross. All of the players seemed to get along well and the banter between them was part of the shows success.

If Milburn Stone really felt that way, he should have stayed in the movie industry. James Arness was just trying to lighten the atmosphere on the set. Those can be some long, dragged out days filming a one hour weekly TV series, 6 days a week, especially back in those days when they made so many more episodes than they do currently. If I had been an actor on this series, I would have appreciated James' sense of humor.

Which I think a lot of people around the country. I like having a few channel i can watch old tv shows. It’s nice to watch something from my past . We have a channel that shows “Three Stooges marathon on New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day at midnight. If I’m not doing anything, I will watch it. Or if I come home from a party and watch it and on Nays day.

Let's not forget that it is the writers of the show who create the show long before the actors create it.
Bad writing can't possibly be translated into great acting. Great actors are often ruined by shitty scripts.
Very long term, this is what has more or less happened to the Star Trek franchise. Things become cartoonish.

Stone was just a little bastard who was jealous of Arness who was a big (higher paid) bastard. The 30 minute B&W episodes were the good ones. The 60 min. ones must be endured.

I disliked this show mostly because it was shot in the studio, with very few episodes actually being filmed outside.. Not being an American I, of course, never saw any of the early episodes as we didn't have a TV in our house so I don't remember this Doc person. I do remember Chester and he was my favourite character by far. My most disliked member of the cast? Sorry everyone, but it was James Arness. I just hated him.
