I grew up during the civil rights movement Blacks didn't have access to the same education as,white students. I remember one black child saying how thrilled he was to have a new textbook..before that they were given old worn out text books. So I think John Wayne's comments meant whites should be in charge until Blacks had the opportunity to better themselves with a good education.

Woody Strode was a very good actor but he never got a lead role. He played Wayne's servant, and he played a racist role in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. No one made him do that. He got paid well for it. Hollywood as a whole was racist for many years. As for being anti-homosexual, That is not a bad thing because it is sickening. We should not treat anyone bad but a person never has to say it is okay.

Lew Wasserman was Jimmy Stewart's agent for decades. Stewart was raised in Pennsylvania not Indiana. Stewart objected to the "uncle remis"-ish costume that was assigned to Woody Strobe (verbatim from one of his interviews). Stewart did not rat out Hollywood Communists to Hoover.
James M. Stewart entered the Army as a Private and retired as a Brigadier General. He founded several companies (NetJets, for one) and worked for conservation and environmental causes.

The piece on James Stewart basically calls him a racist because one actor apparently thought he did something racist (no specifics on what) on the set of one movie. That’s pretty thin to put it mildly. He was very Conservative- and proudly so - and Henry Fonda was a lifelong friend despite being very Liberal and proudly so. They both said the secret was that they didn’t talk politics. So I think you need a lot more evidence to claim all this about James Stewart.

Not defending John Wayne, but a few points:
    - He once borrowed his Rio Bravo hat (which was actually his own personal property) to Sammy Davis Jr. for a Western Davis was doing and posed for a pic with him.
    - He acted alongside Sidney Poitier in THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (JW played the centurion at Jesus' feet who uttered the words "truly this was the son of God"). Reportedly, the two got along well.
    - Woody Strode co-starred with Wayne AND Jimmy Stewart in THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, and while he couldn't stand the best bone in Stewart, he and Wayne got along well.
    - Roscoe Lee Browne co-starred with Wayne in THE COWBOYS (1972), and said that he and Wayne had alot of respect for each other and that he never got any racist vibes from Wayne at that time.
    - Wayne himself destested Walter Brennan so much that Wayne once said that he used to think of himself as a Liberal as compared to Brennan's strong Conservative leaning because - according to Wayne - Brennan was filled with pure hatred for anyone with skin darker than his own.
You have to remember the times these guys were raised. Sure, Clark Gable grew up in their time as well, but he fought against racism to the point where he threatened to walk off the GONE WITH THE WIND set if the Black actors were mistreated. Hattie McDaniels was also his friend, and she was the one who persuaded him to attend the screening of GWTW after he threatened to boycott the screening after he found out that the cinema wouldn't let her attend. I don't thing John Wayne was racist in the way we know it now. Many of these guys would utter racial epithets because it was part of their upbringing, but some of them were not racist. Like I said, I'm not defending them, just saying what I think, and telling what I heard from people who were associated with some of them. And in case you're wondering, yes, I'm a Black man.

What a badly informed hatchet job on Jimmy Stewart. In Stewart's time Hollywood was almost totally run by Jewish men. And Kirk Douglas, Walther Mathau and many more famous actors of the time said, many times in public, that these powerful Jewish men could not be trusted. But Douglas and Mathau were Jewish themselves so could not be accused of antisemitism. As for Woody Strode, he mentions in his autobiography that over the course of a few movies he made with Jimmy Stewart, he found the man to be a 'kind and gentle soul'. On the other hand, Strode thought that both John Ford and John Wayne were not overly fond of black men and were very loud in making their feelings known.

Today, as in the past, they're mental patients, very likely child abuse victims, who've not yet found treatment. And they won't, b/c our society Only cares about $$$ now.
Even the Richest, like a certain former "prez" who has long hero-worshipped Nazis, won't get the help they really need, b/c No One will hold rich folks accountable for their wrong doing.
We can hate the horrid actions & the attitudes that perpetuate harm, while still pitying the abused children they once were. None of us is born hating other humans. That garbage is taught. We need to unteach a whole lot of people, but we can't, b/c the rich but broken ones in power won't allow it. So, we must find some way to do better by Today's children, instead: no matter their color, religion, gender identity, family wealth, origin, etc. If we truly want to to build anything "great", we need to start at the beginning, in childhood (which requires us to actually care about poor kids as more than political tools to achieve Power). We need to fund Public Ed properly & Not use subpar schools as conveyor belts feeding for-profit prisons. Nothing "great" will ever be built w/ hate, nor inequality. What we'll get instead is repeated "Gilded Ages". Gilding is merely covering garbage w/ a shiny coating so it looks nicer. But it's still Trash. I often wonder how many Einsteins were left undiscovered b/c No One who could invest in them did so. How many times have we missed world-changing discoveries, the cure for cancer, methods to save a planet for our grandkids, etc.?
The racists & sexists of our world are "better" than No One. The ones I've met are actually terrible humans. They serve as a warning sign of what abuse of children eventually creates. Often, it's a monster in human form. Further proof? Over a million people didn't die of a "Hoax!". They died b/c too many uncaring people embraced the words of a cult leader who purposely stirs up chaos b/c he enjoys causing pain, and truly cares about No One. This era is Tragic. John Wayne's remarks in that interview, on the other hand, were woefully ignorant, even by the standards of 1971. There were overwhelmingly large numbers of highly educated black people. But most of this is akin to people who say that Mark Twain, born in Mississippi in 1835, was a racist. In 2022, sure, In his time, he was almost as anti-racist as he could get. People just don't understand that these are social ideas and they change over time. Let's hope that, a hundred years in the future, the best attitudes of our time are not considered woefully ignorant and racist by future generations that also do not understand the nature of history and social change.

Inaccurate is your interpretation of John Wayne's quote. John Wayne said is that their are far to few blacks in acting and the movie industry's schools so the level of talent and numbers are just a fraction of that to the whites, and untill that changes the whiles will continue to dominate because of the ratio of blacks to whites attending film and acting Colleges.

He was by then a one star General and was type rated on the B-24, B-17, B-36, B-47, B-29 and the B-57 Hustler. Quite the airforce resume and had black bomber crew members that thought the world of him. Just before his retirement he was promoted to major general. Yup, quite the impressive military record and that was more important to him than his acting career. If you read his autobiography that is quite detailed there is no mention of this nonsense. Yes, he helped Hoover but later in life was discussted at Hoovers private life and at many of the things that he did and would not have been so helpful to him had he known. General Stewart was an impressive, hardworking, loyal patriot and veteran, do not smear him with all this he said, she said BS. Walter Brennan's personality was a bit shocking but believable.

Hey, Walter Brennan had something happen in his life that may account for his strange behavior. He was in WW! and was sprayed with some kind of purple gas and after that he was never the same. People said he was quiet, reserved and intelligent before the incident.
