It sounded more like the 'scene' was removed from the show, not the show itself. As a kid in the fifties and sixties, I remember gathering around the television with the 'entire' family. My grandpa and grandma, mom and dad, and four little kids. We grew up with Gunsmoke. When my Dad was in his last years, he watched reruns of Gunsmoke everyday. My sister who is our brothers care giver bought the DVDs and watches Gunsmoke with our brother. When I visit, I watch them, too. My son has been watching Gunsmoke most of his life, but also watches his own DVDs. And his two young daughters watch with him. Our cousins tell us they are all Gunsmoke Fans, from elder to child. Our friends tell us the same thing. Gunsmoke is a family tradition.

In the 1950s my family lived in a remote location in Idaho and couldn't receive TV. Our family listened to radio shows like Gunsmoke, Rin-Tin-Tin, and The Lone Ranger in the evenings. During the 1960s we finally bought our first black & white TV, and I could watch Gunsmoke.

My Aunt and Uncle and their 2 daughters and youngest son, Chuckie, would gather around the TV and have their dinner in the living room on the night Gunsmoke aired. My Aunt would hand out the plates of food and everyone would settle in. Chuckie was 12 years old on this particular night. Anyone who knew Chuckie felt that he was someone with just a little more specialness about him than most people. He had an old-soul quality about him and was very sweet, helpful, and extremely intelligent for a child his age. Well, just as Chuckie's mom handed him his plate, food flew everywhere. Sweet Chuckie had suffered an undiagnosed brain aneurysm and died on the spot. The family was never the same and Gunsmoke, of course, was never watched in their home again. The memory was too painful. I'm just writing this in his memory and to remind us all that we never know what the next second will hold. Tell everyone you love that you love them. Tell them and show them again and again, repetitively, over and over.

I grew up watching Gunsmoke in the 50's, and on every opening scene I would strap on my "pretend" western holster and try to out-draw Matt Dillon... I think I did a few times, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Gun smoke was a great show and John Wayne was right to recommend James Arness for the role. He was absolutely perfect in it. The best episodes were the earliest seasons with Dennis Weaver as Chester. The tone of the show changed after Mr. Weaver left. Gunsmoke was incredibly popular and ran for 20 years! It was rare for any show to last that long at the time. James Arness was supposedly a very kind person on real life. We just don’t have actors like him anymore.

When Milburn Stone signed his contract to play Doc, he was business savvy enough to include a clause that he receive residuals. That was 65 years ago. Gunsmoke runs daily on different networks, and has for the nearly 50 years since it stopped production. I wonder how much his estate (and thus his heirs) continue to receive as a result of Stone's keen business acumen.

Gunsmoke wasn't taken off the air because of any particular scene. CBS wanted to cancel it after 10 years, but because of audience backlash, they continued it for another 10 years! CBS then thought the series had become dated, and they replaced it with RHODA, a spin off of The Mary Tyler Moore Show!

Supposedly William Conrad was really upset at being passed over for the tv role of Matt Dillion due to his weight, and the fact the tv producers felt he didn’t have the right look. I’d have to agree with them. They made the right decision in choosing James Arness I couldn’t imagine anyone bringing as much to that role as he did.

well, Conrad later had his own show, "CANNON" so he can't complain too much but no way he could have ever been the leading man Arness was. at 6'9" and a kind good face with a strong character for upholding the law and protecting people, Arness was perfection😍. Kitty was a madam but no one "ever went upstairs" and she sure had a different personality to her at the beginning than she had towards the end. At the beginning she played a coy, flirtatious saloon girl who obviously "wanted to go fishing when Matt had the time" but later she was pretty tough, got mad a lot, etc. Quite a change. I liked Dennis Weaver, loved him in Duel (you should see it if you haven't yet) and he used to go to our church and once a month he gave the lecture, very respected and a good person. I preferred Ken Curtis as Festus, he played so many parts! As for Arness, I watched him fight giant ants in Them and did you know that James Arness played the monster in the ORIGINAL Thing movie? So handsome though and manly (swoons inwardly).
Oh well, I can still dream and I still have my taped episodes 💙 Sorry Miss Kitty didn't do so well in real life with men......God bless them all. what a legacy!

I started with Gunsmoke on the radio a long time ago. The early radio and TV stories showed how rough life was back then on the praries. They did tell of men with a quality to tell the truth and to stand by their words. The last two or so years the stories changed with good stand alone stories. I have almost finished with year number twenty with yet a few missed shows to fill in.

Anyone from Kansas or it's border states can tell you, the area around Dodge City does not have high hills or low mountains and no alpine-like landscape, large Cacti or desert boulders as seen in the TV Show! Basically today only vast number of cattle feedlots can be seen around Dodge.

I just started watching Gunsmoke a few months ago , unbelievable! This show is definitely a mans show. Matt Dillon is the kind of man I grew up with. James Arness plays it perfect. He doesnt look for trouble, but takes care of it when it arises . These sissy boys in todays society would not understand how to be this type of man. I miss the era I grew up in. People reswpected and loved their country and had respect. If you didnt , you would get smacked in the mouth. These things now days would fold up and cry.

Life magazine (IIRC) did an anniversary story on Gunsmoke's 20th season, in which the antagonist of the opening scene was Strange, the bar tender, who was an actual quick draw artist and actually out drew Matt in every filming. As to the popularity of Gunsmoke, the Dodge City museum had to create a special scene dedicated to Matt Dillon-- who, they had to tell viewers-- had never been a Marshal in Dodge City.

The real life madam Kitty was called Big Nose Kate and pictures of her are extant. I was a grownup watching Gunsmoke and it’s impossible to explain today just how astonishing, even shocking, it really was-not just it’s deviation from Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Tom Mix and such, but all “cowboy and Indian shows” as rhey were called even when Indians weren’t present. People like Festus looked rough and dirty. It seemed nitty gritty. We called the unusual aspects of it “realistic” though today we can see it wasn’t. But Earp didn’t shoot the gun out of his opponent’s hand as was expected of Roy Rogers, et al. People didn’t wear immaculate clothing-you might say costumes-they wore rough clothes, dusty clothes. It was all very new.

I’ve listened to all of the radio shows but never watched a single episode. The radio show is a window into the history and ethics of not necessarily the old west, but the Californian 1950s. They condemned racism, talked about wife and child abuse, and recounted historical events, but didn’t have much regard for Texans! Because it was of it’s time, the bad guy could never win in the end, even if the story might have been better for it.
