I'm just recovering from a heavy heart surgery. The day of the operation I had this piece in my head and when I woke it was still there, and ever since. Here I'm sitting with IV's everywhere and machines monitoring my body, sweating my ass off trying my best to write something which makes sense. What I really want to say is that this piece served by an outstanding pianist has definitely and will have for ever a special meaning to me. As if Chopin (and the surgeon) saved my life.
Been there. Understandable. I feel this is the best recording, and truest performance on UA-cam. All the others, excepting the old performance by Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, are disappointments.
There was an ICU patient in VFIB, code Blue, who stopped the crash card and said "can I have 4 minutes to bring this down? Please hand me my guitar in the corner." The surgeon nodded OK, the nurse handed the guitar over, and in under 2 minutes, the EKG was normal and stable. The music was s Renaissance piece called Siciliana, it's over ,500 years old, and it changes brain waves and calms heart arrhythmia. Guitarists at family venues play pieces like this to quiet the fussy toddlers before playing the main recital.
She was already a professional pianist in 2015. Maybe you can call it an ”accomplished“ pianist. In the end, her artistry matters. Surely she developed it further while attending Julliard. But her professionalism doesn‘t just start with her degree. It developed way before.
SUBLIME! I have never heard the F-Minor Fantasy played so well and with such tremendous understanding. This young woman is a marvelous artist in every regard.
I totally agree! She brings poetry, drama and grandeur to this great work, all without exaggeration. Surely we'll hear more of this exceptional young woman.
I learned of this piece's existence through a masterclass done by Stephen Kovacevich. The student was Nicolas van Poucke. I fell in love with the piece instantly and it's on my list of pieces I wish to learn some day (in the very distant future, considering my progress). I'd personally want maybe a bit more excitement and speed for this piece but it's hard to argue with Liu's execution. Her performance of Chopin's Op 62 no 1 is probably what everyone's obsessed with mostly, given how exquisitely beautifully she plays the piece. That same expression of beauty continues here. One of the challenges as a listener and especially as a performer is that - quite ironically - we don't listen all that well. We are not one with the music. A lot of times our focus wanders and we keep thinking about other things, or feeling other things. With playing there's the added challenge of dealing with the technicalities - it's bloody hard to play the piano. All effort goes into just executing the muscular and logical process. One of the amazing qualities of Horowitz, to me, is that he was able to essentially "perk up" people's focus and their natural ability to listen. Because it is natural but we need a certain frame of mind and environment for it to kick in. Horowitz was a master of creating that attention with silence. I think Liu shares that same quality. A lot of that has to do with counting: she takes her time, more so than many others but despite of this she doesn't feel slow. If anything, she makes everyone else seem like they are rushing. Another thing is that she respects the breaks - silence is a genuine part of the musical process and is needed in order for the ears to engage. Horowitz knew it and she knows it.
I love how she plays it slower than most renditions! IMO it sounds a lot more natural and expressive when played slow. When it’s faster, it sounds rushed.
I really like her this piece. her touch on keys looks and sounds so natural, and she didn't show us any strained rough. I didn't know about her before she participated in this competition, but she turned to my favorite pianist in a moment. She was the best. thank you Kate.
One of the pianist with the most soulful touch in this competition. Elle possède cette douceur de toucher dans le pianissimo qui frôle l'extase divin et a la capacité de restituer une velléité certaine dans les passages les plus dynamiques sans tomber dans l'agressivité. Bravo.
Epic performance!!!! I have never heard someone who could control such a soft pianissississimo (pppp) like she does. She definitely deserves to move on to later rounds!!!!
Carl Hopkinson Martha Argerich ruined the show. She thinks she is all mighty. She once expressed that she hates Asians who is better than her. Not much of a human being.
@@samuelmusic4836: I would avoid attributing controversial statements to famous artists like Martha Argerich unless you can site sources that can be verified by others.
"Deserves to move on to later rounds" ...................... Haha .... what ? the girl stays already in History. Her unique touch, the supra elegance of her inspiration, sudden beauty, softness, delicacy and utter deep drama, this all together .... she sits near Lipatti, Hofmann, Tamarkina, Hambourg, Lhevinne, von Sauer ............
As far as I am concerned, Kate is the BEST pianist currently. Most other pianist can play perfectly according to the music scores, Kate has that technique perfectly horned. We are hearing music here, not some one is practicing to play a piece. Even my old faithful Arthur Rubinstein does not devote emotion to his favorite Chopin. On the other hand, since technique is out of the way, she is free to express Chopin. IMHO
Brava to the max. Besides being an extraordinary pianist, Ms. Liu is living proof that (out of respect for the composer, the audience, and most of all, herself) a young lady (or a not-so-young-anymore female) does not have to dress like a pianist in a cocktail bar located in a 3rd rate hotel miles off of the Las Vegas Strip in order to impress the audience (or in this case, the judges).
I think this might be the definitive interpretation of this work. It’s pure artistry. I love the Zimerman studio recording, but it doesn’t tug at the heart the way Ms Liu does in this performance.

Samuel Music: Please remember that Kate Liu was a major prize winner in this very prestigious, and highly competitive, competition. And she also received a special award for her Mazurka performances. I think it is unfair to suggest racial bias among the jury. Kate Liu would have been my choice for 1st prize, too; but there is no denying that Seong -Jin Cho is an outstanding pianist. I have to admit that her performance for this fantasy was better than cho. She played it very tidy, clean and with very touching emotion. I can feel the flow of her playing so smooth and beautiful.
