What I love with this girl : she is not trying the usual "Do you hear me ? " but she is listening to her own music , and often quite falling in some milliseconds of pure ectasy .....
2015 Jury Member Garrick Ohlsson said about her: "Kate Liu (US), 3rd prize, gave the most beautiful playing of the whole three weeks in the B minor Sonata. She also won the prize for best Mazurkas and, no apologies, I would have given her the prize for best Sonata too." absolutely gold performance.
Sadly, unless a contestant is utterly useless, the kind of verdicts given these contestants reflect more of what the jury "want or expect" them to be or to do during the entire competition, which begs the question under what or which canon are the contestants supposed to be judged on? Is it on the basis of their being "general listening public friendly" or is it on their originality of approach, superfluous technic, or uncanny/uncommon musicality? I always have my reservations when it comes to these competitions because of the premise alone that the judges themselves do not necessarily have any preeminence over each and every individual they behold because each one possesses an individuality that no one has a right to control or influence.
Happy birthday Kate!!. may 23 (2024). We love you so much !!!. we will want Kate to play a lot of Chopin music from now on. I'm looking forward to it .

I think what is most striking here is how easy she makes it look. Rarely will you find a pianist performing a work such as this that looks so seemingly at ease and in control - while still bringing out all of the energy needed. There is virtually no tension apparent that one can see - from any part of her body during the performance. For this, it is extraorinarily rare for a pianist. Michelangeli tried to not show any tension visually by freezing his head (the rest of his body showed little tension). But Liu here seems to just be enjoying and incredibly relaxed - yet performing at a terrific level in the most important performance of her life. Incredible.
Please bear with me, dear Pauline Tang, ...but I will build upon your comment to show that Miss Liu is SO much more than "masterful", or a human with "her heart in it." Decades ago, when I was about the age that Miss Liu appears in this recital, a group of us, composed of three or four young men would meet at the homes of two older, more experienced pianists (the only two friends any of us had that owned good Steinway Grands!). Over another decade of years, all I seemed to ever hear about Chopin was the Sonata, as being a competition for my "warhorse", the Fantasia in f minor. When time dissolved our group, still more decades of years passed me without my noticing this Sonata. As Kate Liu played it, just now, all the praise to the Sonata I ever heard, has been fulfilled. And, everybody was right. Watching her hands, it seemed impossible that such small amount of motion and flexion of fingers could produce such magic. Then I earnestly surveyed this girl. And, suddenly the hair at the back of my neck prickled up, and then I didn't see Kate, I saw something blazing gold; and if ever I had beheld spirit possession, or genius so great as to represent to me the explaination of my cold shivers .... there it was! A Bronze medal, or any thing less than a large, precious diamond, would be a insulting offering! And my impression of the contests, and the Political judging of said contests, has reduced the whole affair, except Artist Kate Liu, considerably in my estimation! I know of no method to tell the artist about this spiritual, or "psychic" ttransference of information, but I wish I did! K. McIntire-Tregoning, concert composer.
When you have mastered your technical skill, then you are free to phrase anything she likes. This is Kate, she can play anything at ease, then her expansion spans is set. No struggling or bog down by difficulty passages, your expression can go free. Kate has master it all, what a wonderful gift. I am the most envious.

Goosebumps. Her playing is something special. Everytime I hear any simple melody sections, its pure as white, like an innocence and dream of a little girl and its marvelous. Brings me to tears. Last mvt gave me the chills. Love how she really planned out the piece with very contrasting ending.
Third time listen back to bsck. That addictive! First 3 times I only listened. Then I watched. Ms.Liu fascinates like an Art Deco goddess tickling the ivories!
Kate, I really like this powerful and sensitive rendition of the Chopin Sonata in B minor. Congratulations on receiving the Bronze Medal. Judging by your playing you have a great career. A wonderful personality and people skills will also be an asset to you.
MAGNIFICENT! Beautiful, insightful, thrilling, deeply introspective, filled with exquisitely refined detail all brought forth with brilliant, flawless technique. No one in his right mind could ask for more. Rivals -- and may even exceed -- most of the best on record.
The greatest performance of one of the greatest Romantic Sonatas. I have listened to dozens and dozens of pianists play this in full (back when I was obsessed with this Sonata), and still after a year, this performance is unbeatable. Kate Liu brings out its full potential, with the 1st movement (my favorite) with her great attention to detail, the deep transcendental Largo, and the passionate finale. Certainly one of my favorite pianists. I hope she returns soon.
Commento che condivido pienamente....oggi non ascolto nessuno suonare la 3 se non Lei, diletta Kate, anima serena in grado di farci vivere l'essenza dell'Autore . Grazie Maestra Kate! Marco Rotondi
@18107863 -- You can substitute technical perfection for the emotional and intellectual richness of Kate's playing. Kate is the true start of this competition. Her interpretation of Sonata No 3 is epochal. we are lucky to know her incredible talent.
Simply amazing how much emotion can be poured into such an already beautiful piece and manifested with such salience in the resulting sounds. Absolutely beautiful! And this type of maturity being displayed in someone so young is all the more impressive. You along with Seong Jin Choi have won over the hearts of so many people, including mine. Thanks for enriching the already stacked lexicon of beautiful performances of Chopin.
My favorite video on UA-cam. I still disagree with judges on this competition. Kate Liu is the one who should have been rewarded gold medal in 17th international Frédéric chopin competition. Her sonata in B minor was more than perfect. That was heaven. I don't understand why she didn't get sonata prize as well 😭 But professionals judged them, so that was right. I believe so. But my first is Kate Liu forever.
I completely agree. I also think her performance of the fourth Ballade alone was enough to separate her from the rest of the pack. Unfortunate the judges seem to care more about a few minor technical mistakes than musicality. Though Cho's performance of Etude Op 10 No 1 is probably the best I've ever heard. They did say it was an extremely close battle for gold. Had this been 2010 or 2005 Kate might have very well won.
@@8beef4u 2005 was Rafal Blechacz's time, and I think the results from then make it rather clear how outstanding of an artist he was compared to his competitors. While this merely is hypothetical at best given that we don't know what would have happened given that they competed together, I'd think that Kate's technical errors already would have left her behind Rafal in terms of points, but not to mention his performances were enough to get him the special awards in all of the categories compared to Kate who maybe could compete with him when it came to the Mazurkas or Sonatas. I am no professional musician, so perhaps I am undeserving to judge. I also do not mean to downplay the other great musicians who have competed in their respective competitions but it seems to me unlikely that Kate, if she performed in the 2005 competition just like she did in this 2015 competition, would win 1st prize over Rafal. I am not trying to say one is strictly better than the other. However, given their performances in their respective years of competing in the Chopin Competition (which is the only thing we can base any comparison on), I think that while Kate's musicality and sensibility demonstrate both her unique character as an artist alongside an understanding of Chopin, Rafal's lack of technical flaws in addition to his own musical ingenuity and connection to Chopin (which is a testament to his musicality and sensibility as well) would put him over the edge from Kate. Had she no technical errors, perhaps she could have triumphed over him. That said, both Rafal and Kate are outstanding musicians of this generation in their own right. This also holds true for anyone who has qualified for the main competition whose careers we can all only hope will blossom and enrich not only our generation but future generations of classical music which is a genre that is practically off the grid at the moment within mainstream music.
Kate is so much better than other competitors. There is lots of emotion, drama, passion, delicacy and feelings in the way she performs. Kate will win the frist prize, I think. Any other result would be a huge dissapointent. I love music of Chopin. But, she can make love Chopin,s music even more! Unbeliavable Kate!!!!! Wow!!!!
+Sun Thathong (Sunny) You forgot about Cho. He has a lot of Concerto experience. You must hear him play the Tchaikovsky 1st concerto in the Rubinstein competition where he should have won.
+Mwk My only criticism of this is her pauses are soooo long. I hope she does not do this in the Concerto. She should win a medal, but if the jurors don't like the pauses in the Concerto. there are other geniuses who is right there.
They someway all deserve to win. We are many that have now noticed Kates playing and in a few weeks she has turned into one of my favourite pianists. There are no others i would rather listen to. I would say i actually prefer listening to her - you:) She always show the melody(s) with a beautyfull tone a perfect voicing, technical strong enough to do it excatly as she want. Phrasing nuanced and deep felt. Wow
+connie rahim Yes, and that is exactly as great playing should be. The complete absence of self-consciousness and total immersion in the music, itself, is the mark of a truly great artist.
Since first hearing the fourth movement of this piece in the 1950's, played by the great Fou Ts'ong, I have rarely heard anyone play it to that standard. Kate Liu has excelled.
Kate you deserved to win the competition but you have at least won our hearts. Congratulations on earning 3rd place - you undoubtedly have a strong career ahead of you.
+uuuuubetcha Well we are all entitled to our opinions. Mine is that I like Kate Liu's playing of the sonata very much. Her bronze medal win was well deserved and maybe she deserved better than that.
Amazing those 40 people who dislike this performance. And only 575 of 117000+ care to click their approval. Well, I wonder, and with awe realise that so few people understand and appreciate the great art of the future La Regina Assoluta of Piano Music Playing, Prinncess Kate Liu.........
I've been watching some of the performances from the most recent Chopin Competition. I became transfixed by the playing of Kate Liu. In my mind, she should have won the competition. She has all the technical chops (but so do all the pianists competing), but she is a step above all the others in her musicianship.... particularly with Chopin. Her ability to evoke the inherent emotion in the music without falling into sentimentality is just amazing. Bottom line, I think she deserved a win. Why do I think she only got third place? Psychology. Watch her play, she looks completely relaxed and in control. Watch before and after she plays, she looks insecure (grabbing her dress, shrinking back from the audience, nervous grin, slumping posture). Notice that I said she "looks" insecure, not that she is. Often success is attained as often by perception than actual talent. If I were this woman's teacher/agent, hire her a coach to work on body language. She deserves to be a top talent. She deserves great success. Perception is going to keep her from gaining the success she should have. I would also have her watch the body language of Yuja Wang before and after she plays..... such a small woman who completely commands the stage.
I believe she only missed the prize cause of a flaw in the Scherzo. To my taste, she is the best. I just listened to Trifonov, and I like her even more. The way she looks before and after her play might matter to stage performance, but it should not matter for the music.
Kate is really amazingly great..... i extremely enjoyed this whole performance and have played it over and over again on youtube... and the Yamaha is great as well.... !
I was scrolling down the comment section to find if somebody had the same reaction. I went back to see this video after several months and suddenly had tears falling down my face from that 15th minute. It is like touching the stars, like reaching divinity for a moment. Blissfully amazing!
i remember my first comment was when I was taking care of our family dog when she fractured her right back foot. she passed away on June 21 of this year. how I feel when I'm listening to this interpretation is... well the same. Kate's playing is still beautiful. but i remember the 1 year ago me must have felt something different: he must have been happier. i remember he was looking out his window while softly massaging her foot when 26:09 began. i think it was early afternoon. i think Boksil (our dog's name) was recovering very well and I was filled with happiness, maybe hope too. i don't know why I'm writing this I'm not sad or anything but maybe it's a journal type thing. yeah.
Her playing is amazing. She plays Chopin as well as any professional that I've heard. I hope she continues to pursue piano because I would love to hear a lot more from her.
Es maravillosa!!Como interpreta a Chopin !!Desde hoy ,que la descubrí Chopin lo oiré tocado por ella.Que hermoso futuro profesional le espera a esta muchacha. Bravissima
If she hasn’t engaged a top flight agent already she shouldn’t hesitate. Classical music is very competitive. She is extraordinary and deserves all future success.
there is just something about 8:04~8:10 that sounds so ethereal. it almost doesn't sound like piano. it sounds legitimately like a "thought," if that even makes sense. one can only imagine what Chopin was hearing when he was composing this sonata.
@@thetrianglewaffle I believe the finale might be a possible factor. I think Hamelin played faster than most pianists (not saying speed is best) but it's very hard to do that seeing how other pianists struggle with that movement. Also he played with minimal mistakes, and it's hard to describe, but sometimes I feel that when pianists play that movement, sometimes it feels rather.... As though they really adhere to the timing I'd say? Hamelin played it really smoothly. I'm not sure how to describe it. And the coda was fantastic, especially the end where he spammed the "B" (to my personal liking) haha. Of course the sonata as a whole factors. Kate played with as much musicality as well, despite certain wrong notes (I'd agree that they factor in a competition). Though she does have the ability to transcend that.

Breathtaking performance! Especially the 4th movement, such confidence and strength. How did Chopin even come up with music like this?
I fall in love with the ending. She played with sooooo much emotion and I was so touched with it ! Bravo Kate !

@18107863 -- You can substitute technical perfection for the emotional and intellectual richness of Kate's playing. Kate is the true start of this competition. Her interpretation of Sonata No 3 is epochal. we are lucky to know her incredible talent.
Dear Kate: you had give the most sweet kiss for Chopin!! Keeping to do so ?! Life is different with your beautiful music!
I can't stop to listening to her. She is amazing.
Music breathes under her hands. Divine.

such a perfect rendition; deliberate, dramatic, yet so natural. iwe love you Kate!!
3rd movement................. very very very beautiful. .............
O! Chyba nie słyszałeś czwartej!
I don't understand why she didn't get sonata prize as well 😭
But professionals judged them, so that was right.
3악장도 너무 좋다. 섬세함과 감성적 연주로는 1등 못지않은듯
Wow!!!!
+Mwk I'd be happy if she wins.... But I suspect Aimi Kobayashi might take the first prize, while Kate and Eric would tie at second....
Sun Thathong I think Kate is a lot better then Aimi. For me she is unbeatable!!!
+Images Oubliées , "There is life after (Yuja) Wang" LMAO
정말 강한 감동을 주는 소중한 피아니스트죠..
Both this picture and recording are splendid.
Thank you for Kate and Chopin institute providing this free.
Amazing performance with a powerful, It 's slender body and arms and fingers.
I was deeply impressed. I was immersive in this performance.
Best rendition of this piece I've heard. Masterful!
Kate kocham cię za to co dla mnie robisz swoją muzyką.

I bought her double CD and put it on my phone. It includes the sonata. Her playing is so sensitive. My favourite pianist
Beautiful, impressive, passionate and moving. I loved it.
Since first hearing the fourth movement of this piece in the 1950's, played by the great Fou Ts'ong, I have rarely heard anyone play it to that standard. Kate Liu has excelled.
Moi aussi c’est Fou Ts’ong qui m’a donné le baptême de cette sonate. Je ne l’ai jamais oublié.
Kate you deserved to win the competition but you have at least won our hearts. Congratulations on earning 3rd place - you undoubtedly have a strong career ahead of you.
+EpigeneticAlteration Should be FIRST...sorry, I love her.
Her sonata is cold af. I can't feel it. She deserves top 5 in terms of technique. But overall she should not be in the finals.
uuuuubetcha So who do you think should be gold, silver and bronze?
+Vette gaddia Gold is hamelin. Silver is seong. Bronze is yike.
+uuuuubetcha Well we are all entitled to our opinions. Mine is that I like Kate Liu's playing of the sonata very much. Her bronze medal win was well deserved and maybe she deserved better than that.
She has a very special sound and a very interesting take in this Chopin work!
Amazing those 40 people who dislike this performance.
And only 575 of 117000+ care to click their approval. Well, I wonder, and with awe realise that so few people understand and appreciate the great art of the future La Regina Assoluta of Piano Music Playing, Prinncess Kate Liu.........
The prize means nothing in the face of such artistry. Liu will prevail.
Why do I have a feeling you wouldn't be saying the same thing if there was a male playing.
That is exactly what I mean. I agreed.
Wonderfully played music....and what beautiful hands !!!
The melody starting at 6:39 is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written
The most beautiful version of sonata ive ever heard........
I fall in love to her interpretation
I would also have her watch the body language of Yuja Wang before and after she plays..... such a small woman who completely commands the stage.
wow wowow!!! some one finally speaks the truth!!
She has already Yuja's impeccable posture and control when sitting on the piano. That's a start!
I believe she only missed the prize cause of a flaw in the Scherzo. To my taste, she is the best. I just listened to Trifonov, and I like her even more. The way she looks before and after her play might matter to stage performance, but it should not matter for the music.
She should be left, to be who she is and sees fit to be.
@@andresgunther -- Kate has the purity of heart, untouched by marketing. She is a high priestess of Music.
Kate' s performance is excellent. !!
No one has ever played like this before.
Phenomenal artist!!! Thank you Kate!
Love you honey
Kate, You are the winner in the opinion of the the audience !!!! Only You create, not re-create the music while playing. Good luck!!
The Largo is beautiful but most play it as bit of a rest before the Presto. Liu turns it into a masterwork on its own.
Wspaniałe i ponadczasowe. Ta muzyka będzie zachwycać wiecznie.
Wonderful, very Polish! Go on Ms Kate Liu. You will win!
No!!! Adam
you are wrong.
강형숙 It depends.
Kate Czarodziejka.. jedno z najlepszych wykonań tej sonaty... GREAT
I love Kate's interpretetions. I listen to it every day!
Kate is really amazingly great..... i extremely enjoyed this whole performance and have played it over and over again on youtube... and the Yamaha is great as well.... !
From 15:32, it's pure magic. it's so lyrical and pretty.
Can’t hold my tears from 15:28 . So beautiful beyond description.
What a terrific artist!!I dont think there are many other pianists who can perform Chopin so beautifully, he can be proud of Kate!
there is just something about 8:04~8:10 that sounds so ethereal. it almost doesn't sound like piano. it sounds legitimately like a "thought," if that even makes sense. one can only imagine what Chopin was hearing when he was composing this sonata.
She should have won the Sonata Award with this performance hands down
I respect your opinion but Hamelin deserved it. I am also aware that one of the judges said he would personally give Liu the sonata prize.
@@lczq6737 I respect your opinion too. Hamelin did play superbly!
