    Thanks for your tutorials! In my case, the boolean operation only whitens around the tentacles, not around the circles, if I move any of the circles to the border of the body, then it works for that circle but not the others, any idea what's happening? Repeated several times, same results.

      For some reason, on the computer I was using when I made this video, this problem didn't occur, but I just tried it on a new computer and you're right, the circles don't get cut out of the body unless they're partially outside of it. Fortunately, I found a solution. First, select just the body object, then go to the Fill tab of the Fill and Stroke Dialog, and at the top right you should see two Mickey Mouse-looking buttons. The filled-in one should be selected by default, but if you instead choose the one with the center cut out, the circles should get cut out of the body. Hope this helps!

    I think that is one of the most impressive demonstrations of the power of inkscape that I've seen. More more more please.

    My inkscape journey just started because I'm getting a laser engraver, and want to learn it so I can export text/designs to Laser GRBL. I have now officially fallen deep down the rabbit hole with your channel! Lol Your videos are amazing 👌 A ton of information, but you are very detailed, and you point out and explain all the little things that I feel like I would be puzzled over, had they not been explained. Thank you so much for what you do!🙏 Fantastic work!

    As tentacules are drawn initially with a bezier line with a powerstroke, why do you choose to add a bend lpe and not just simply adjust nodes with node tool ?

    • @SweaterCatDesigns
      @SweaterCatDesigns  Рік тому +2

      Good question! I initially wasn't going to include the Bend path effect, and was just going to add nodes to the tentacle path and adjust them, like you mentioned. However, every time I tried this, Inkscape would either crash or give me weird results. It could just be my computer, but I think adding new nodes to the path itself was interfering with the settings of the path effects attached to it. I then tried using Bend instead, and it solved the problem, so I decided to add it to the lesson.

    I was following along but first my line wasn't tapered like yours was. It was bigger at one end than the other. So I started over - and closed inkscape and re-opened it since I had had it open while laptop not in use. The second time I did it, the line wouldn't thicken when I adjusted the width. It had no effect on it at all - I made sure it was selected when I was using it. Any idea what my issue is? Very new to inkscape so I'm sure I have a setting off somewhere. I had been playing around with some basic stuff.

    Brilliant, thanks for the video. One question, does the order of the effects when there are more than one influence the final result? I say this because it reminds me of the modifiers in Blender and I know that in that case it does affect the final result.

    • @SO-dl2pv
      @SO-dl2pv Рік тому +1

      Yes, the order of the LPE is important.

    • @StephenBoyd21
      @StephenBoyd21 Рік тому +1

      The effects are always applied top to bottom. So anything that happens in a previous effect will affect the current effect.

    I've just been having an experiment with this and I notice that difference boolean effect only works if the two objects don't completely overlap. The second object needs to have at least a portion which is outside the original shape. Which sounds a bit like a bug.

    • @SweaterCatDesigns
      @SweaterCatDesigns  Рік тому

      That's actually the normal behavior for the difference operation. It removes all parts of the bottom object that the top object overlaps, and it also deletes the entire top object. So if the top object completely overlaps the bottom one, everything will be removed, and if the top object doesn't overlap the bottom one at all, only the top object will disappear, leaving the bottom one untouched. In the case of the Boolean Operation path effect, the bottom object refers to the object with the path attached to it and the top object is the linked item (the one you copied into the clipboard). You can actually switch them around by checking the "Swap operands" option in the Path Effects dialog.

    • @StephenBoyd21
      @StephenBoyd21 Рік тому

      @@SweaterCatDesigns Except that is not quite what it does. If the top object completely overlaps the bottom object then nothing happens. In order for the bottom object to be removed, there has to be some overlap between the bottom object and the top object. I.e. part of the top object has to be outside the bottom object.

  • @wimdg4230
    @wimdg4230 Рік тому

    This is probably a noob question, but at the very start of the video, when you keep the 'difference' between the ellipse and the rectangle to create the body of the jellyfish, why doesn't the 'outside' part of the rectangle also remains, same as the 'outside' part of the ellipse ...?

    • @SweaterCatDesigns
      @SweaterCatDesigns  Рік тому +1

      That's just the way the Difference operation works: it removes everything except the parts of the bottom object that aren't being covered by the top one. The Flatten operation, which is new to Inkscape 1.3, works similarly to Difference but will keep the top object.
