M Powel lol my mom made fun of my moongels the other day since she said I could have just used the sticky hands you’re referring to instead of spending money on moongels.
For noise reduction, I highly recommend the KZ ZST IEMs with Comply memory foam tips. The sound is great and the reduction seems even. ZST's are about $20 and a knockoff 12 pack of foam tips is $8. I love mine!
I should've put these ideas to market when I when in my 20s.😂 I had some of these ideas back in the 1990s, and now they're all being used regularly. I'm sure I'm not the only professional drummer who's thought of these alternatives years ago. Whatever the case, these are great ideas and are extremely simple and cheap. Thanks for putting this out there for the next generation to discover. 👍
Guys your ideas helped me a lot thanks I've used a round piece of shirt to cover to the floor Tom and the snair drum it sounds deep and good and also if you stick a hard piece of wood to the mouse pad your DIY practice pad is ready. Thank you Drumeo......
Good stuff here!! I’ve used mouse pads to silence the toms for practice like those Sound Off pads. It’s the same neoprene rubber, just thinner. Thanks for the tips, brother.
Dog tag chains can be found in 50 cent gumball machines make excellent sizzles! Military helmet pads “Nape and side” gell pads are doubles of 5 diff sizes for $13! 3M foam or rubber double sided tape works great aswell! One is denser than the other! Both make great cymbal mutes too, especially if you want a dry sound out of a cheap brass cymbal!
I use a t-shirt on each of my toms. Rolled it up and put it inside resting on top of the reso head against the body. Works great. My cheap drums have never sounded better.
I also substitute those cute gels that teachers use in their classrooms instead of Moon Gels. You can get a big sheet of them, in many different shapes and sizes, at Walmart for about a $1. Works the same.
I used to put a second drum head on the snare, but not inverted and with the ring still on. It sounds like an electronic drum pitched down. Great video, just experiment with everything.
I purchased a big circular rubber bottomed pad that hardware stores sell for putting on the bottom of furniture legs for movers or prevent floor scratching. I think I got mine at Wal-Mart for $5. Cheap practice pad option.
Get some rolls of adhesive backed weather stripping to use for muffling drums and cymbals. Experiment with different stock thicknesses and cut it at different lengths. Gives a lot of control.
One time, my sweat towel fell onto my snare drum. It made that deep sound and my band director loved it. I've seen that on some other videos too. I think you could tape that cut out drum, using an exacto knife, to secure it better.
A couple of bottles lids on your stickbag help a lot when you face a cymbal stand with no wing nuts. Just make a small hole in the middle and forget there. Could save your expensive cymbal in a gig.
Window gels from the dollar store are great alternatives to moon gel and much cheaper. Plus they are festively shaped depending on the season. Mine are all day or the dead themed.
That t shirt thing is a regular thing for me except for t shirt I prefer thin towel. You can also muffle any drums by sticking newspaper with a tape at the bottom head
Been doing a few of these for years...Another cheap dampening trick is the Sticky Hands that are sold in gumball machines for 50-75 cents. I cut the fingers off for the rack Tom's and use the palm on my floor tom... then you can store them back in the little plastic bubble they came in.
I used to use the printer paper on snare technique he mentions but I'd recommend a paper towel for the snare instead. You'll shred a hole in the middle of it soon enough, which will allow you to keep the stick/skin control that you'd have on your regular head, but still muting the overtones like the paper/drum head would.
nice ideas.... i use thrift store video game drum pads as practice pads. this rock band thing came with a stand and 4 pads...for 20 bucks ( although i did modify it to make it a little taller, and i also took the angle out of the pads to make it level ).
Don't throw out old drumhead hoops! You can sew up some screen mesh heads that are super quiet and still feel like real heads. I like mine for practicing in the basement after the kids are asleep.
@@thomasmccann8008 Search for "DIY mesh heads." I was looking for a quieter practice pad and came across this idea. To make one you cut off the old drum head from the hoop. Cut a circle from a roll of extra-strength window screen about one inch larger than the hoop. Then fold and sew the edge around the hoop. Don't pull the screen head too tight while sewing otherwise it will be too hard to get the rim back on the drum. And I've been happy with only one layer of screen. ua-cam.com/video/AkvQHPB-wlk/v-deo.html
You can also use old heads if you have them. Cut the rim off if you like. You can also cut circles out of them and make several. Like a floor tom with several cut outs will work for your smaller drums.
Hello Reuben. Nice vid, man! I already knew most hacks tho. But I love your playing AND how your cymbals sound in this video. What brand and series/type are they? I could see the hats are Zildjian. What type are they? Thanks in advance for your answer. Best regards from Holland.
I tend to use a paper notepad instead of a normal drum pad. I've found that if I put it on harder surfaces, I get more rebound and on softer surfaces I get less bounce if I want to practice finger technique and control etc.
Thanks. Could you also gives me some idea of what kind of stuff that I can use to train my kicks without actual pedals and bass? Or what stuffs out there that I can use to build a kickpad?
casual earbuds and dampening over-ears don't really work that well compared to decent in-ear monitors, major difference is proper in-ears decrease outside evenly across frequency spectrum, while any over ear headphones barely dampen anything below about 300Hz which is where drums are loudest
Wow... Who would have thought a simple piece of paper would make such an awesome sound on the snare! Also I'm so absurd I never saw this video about 9 years ago when I spent $200 on drums silencers :/
I think that he did an EXCELLENT job here presenting different options. I also like the way he plays... traditional and matched grips. Superb job.
I know the video was about the diy tricks and all BUT THE DRUMMING WAS SO COOL MAN
where does one get killer skills like yours?
That is Reuben Spyker, find him on social media and follow him.
take a shot every time he says “your local hardware store”

Excuse me while I go and buy a domain... :-)
Check out daves insta
I dont get it
Can't afford drums? Not to worry, just stay tuned for part 2....
XD
huh?
AHAHAHAHA
Those little sticky hands you used to throw on the classroom ceiling work great as moongels

Josiah Havekost the ZSTs and the ZSRs are really good!

Ride technique is crazy. Wow😎
You can also use a table tennis racket as a practice pad.
do you mean a Ping Pong racquet?

This moment when your snare sounds exactly the same when you put your wallet on it
*This post was made by poor gang*
Lawfy D. Ace one piece gang
Yohohoho! Nice desu
i didn't think the snare sounded the same with the wallet.
@@MrAliasdd whoosh
@@MrAliasdd he is poor and has no wallet.
Sorry, I felt bad for him.
For smoother bassdrum pedal: Bones Redz abec 11 skateboard bearings.
Instead of Moongel (which cost +/- 10 USD for 6pcs) buy sticky hands (which cost < 2 USD for 10pcs): same material.
Bram Bergs, thank you they work very well.
Swiss is better

I used duct tape and 2-3 pieces of papers for muffling. It looks funny but is effective.
Wow, never thought I'd see the day a "lifehack" type video was actually useful and helpful! Kudos
Lol I use the ear bud technique for yard work!
That extra drum head effect was dope

Good Table tennis bats have great rebound.
Dude great hands
I absolutely love the snare sound with the paper 👍🏻😊😎

Use the whole tape role for dampening the floor drum 😜 3:57

I always used to experiment with putting drumheads upside down on the kit. Good for muting and getting dampenend fat sounds !

“Cut the drumhead” that is the most expensive hack I ever seen
I have the same noise canceling earphones. They work amazing. Go with the Bluetooth ear buds for some extra room
Watching this again now i'm starting to get more drums again.
Wow nice , got a new lessons, thanks God bless
You also can use cheap car dashboard sticky cellphone holders for damping the toms, snare and cymbals.
Very helpful video thanks

Went to a drum clinic years ago by one of the Doobie Brothers drummers. He used a sanitary napkin on the inside of a metal snare shell.
I love the nickel tape sizzle, did it many times!

My friend have second snare for such beauty sound Yap its great!
About the second drum head trick - do you recommend that the head you use as a mute be a new, fresh head, or could I use an old head?
Brendon Crave I would use a old head to save money, as long as it isn’t broken
Need more video of drum hacks
check rdavidr out dude ! he has some great vids on that
pakito 9 It’s true, he has a lot of awesome drum hacks!
You can also use yofa mats to make the drums way quieter
Awsome.
I bet B&Q love this fella 😂 😂 😂
Which is better for a practice pad. Mousepad or the cork one?
Now all this monies we saving... invest it in drumeo!
So cool
The wallet on the snare trick came from the old jazz drummers check out some of these dudes!!!
what ride was he using ???
bc im not a big Zildjian fan but that ride was amazing
If he knew how much a Evans drumhead here in Brazil costs, he would never cut it. Just seeing it made me want to cry.
What about if you like the ring in your snare ?
At 3:03
Just cellotape 20p’s to ur cymbal it sounds exactly the same
Caution with the tee-shirt technique, I have torn one because of the rim shots (I use it fully covering the snare drum)
Why would you use a shirt you want to wear again?
I didn't wanted to use it again. I just sort of noticed that. And I'm spreading the word :)
casual earbuds and dampening over-ears don't really work that well compared to decent in-ear monitors,
major difference is proper in-ears decrease outside evenly across frequency spectrum, while any over ear headphones barely dampen anything below about 300Hz which is where drums are loudest
Also passive NC like that will never be great because LF energy can travel from the cup to your skull and end up being louder
Kinda new here, anybody know why he switches to the butts of the sticks at times? Is it just to get a fuller sound?
Yes. Actually, there are some sticks that are thick at both sides
I’m gonna try the tape method
I tell you this - this guy has betyer technique than some of the other guys holy smokes
Dude has some serious scissor skills
Nice Video guys..Love it
Wow... Who would have thought a simple piece of paper would make such an awesome sound on the snare! Also I'm so absurd I never saw this video about 9 years ago when I spent $200 on drums silencers :/
