    This is by far the greatest tutorial I have ever seen on UA-cam. I really mean that and the reason is, you do something no one else bothers to do. Everyone else just gives the whole "you set this to that and play around" ordeal. You however actually took the time to say "Hey here's how you find the problems and how you fix them if they're there" that EQ bit was really great man thank you

      You’re welcome! Glad you found the video helpful. Check out some of my other videos, my style is very similar. I try to keep things simple for everybody. 😁 But when I went through the DaVinci Resolve audio Effects series, I did say you’ve got a play around with things to get the sound you’re looking for. 😜

    I feel like there are a million tutorials on visuals, but not a lot on audio or how each tool works. You did a really great job of explaining everything. I would like to get more in depth with each of the tools because I think that a lot of videos are just recipes without too much explanation as to what each ingredient does.

    Too much work...
    1. get closer to mic and in proper position to mic type
    2. declick
    3. denoise
    4. eq + compressor
    5. deesser if you need it
    That's all you need. Don't waste 30 min on useless work in audio. If you record bad, it will be bad anyway. Just record it better, and you will just do some minimal fixes in 2 minutes. And if you always record in the same room, with same acoustics and same mic placement, you save all of this as a preset and just drop it on every clip. 95% of the time you will speak the same, so nothing really needs to be changed.

  • @renod42
    @renod42 4 роки тому +4

    Your compressor settings weren’t doing anything other than increasing volume. How do I know? Look at the gain reduction meter - the compressor wasn’t kicking in. Need to bring the threshold down to trigger it.

  • @renod42

    When normalizing consider using the true peak versus sampled. (Drop down choice). True peak is likely the better Choice unless there is unnatural spikes.

    Hi Jason,
    all of these reverb presets are a bit too much.
    What reverb settings do you recommend for a singing voice?
    I need a more subtle setting than the ones offered by the presets.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 роки тому

      Hi! Without knowing what the vocal sounds like and what effect you are going for, what I would do is to choose one of the presets, then go to the wet/dry mix dial, turn it to zero and slowly turn it up. That way just a little of the effect is mixed in and you should be able to make a nice balance. It's rare that you would use any of the presets at full blast. Hope that works out!

    Put the mic on a mic stand just out of frame, record peaks at +/- -9dB, use some ('sound' blankets) if your room has a lot of reflection. It will save so much work in post. A little Eq and compression should get you halve way there. If you listen to something that is louder; you perceive it as better... If you compare, get things equally loud! Happy mixing!

    Great explanations! Don't know if you noticed this, but your compression wasn't doing anything. That's why nobody heard any difference. You can tell by the gain reduction meters, They weren't moving at all during the compression part of your explanation.

  • @privacyvalued4134
    @privacyvalued4134 3 роки тому +1

    This video is kind of backwards. I was taught that you are supposed to gate your noise floor before you compress your audio and that EQ is supposed to be done before applying dynamics. That jives with the order in which Fairlight displays the EQ and Dynamics options. IIRC, it tends to distort audio a bit without realizing it if those things are handled out of order.
    Most of this video stems from the fact that automatic audio normalization is a fundamentally broken tool. The standard automatic audio normalization tool normalizes the audio across a whole track by picking the max peak and setting the boost to a static level that never exceeds that peak, which almost always produces undesirable results. The sample track used in the video demonstrates the problem: There is one brief moment of loudness compared to the rest of the track and so that becomes the max peak while the vast majority of the rest of the track falls well below the target dB level. Compression is the hack that most people then use to compensate but compression actually distorts the original sound.
    Everyone is in the market for a better audio normalizer that auto-ducks the 1-2 peaks that happen sporadically across a very large sample window (e.g. 15-30 seconds), allowing for better overall normalization of a track. A tool like that would probably be the single greatest improvement to audio normalization in the last 30 years and wouldn't be hard for NLE authors to build an auto-ducking timeline-based normalizer (i.e. adds adjustable points to the timeline around areas that critically peak and then adjust the rest of the track) but no one does it for whatever reason. Manually adjusting audio loudness levels gets fairly tedious and is time-consuming, which is why people are lazy and abuse compression after a quick normalize. It generally produces passable results in a fraction of the time. Most users are looking to get the project out the door, which is totally okay, but the folks behind the NLE software could be providing better audio normalization tools to help everyone.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  3 роки тому +2

      Hi! Totally legit and constructive feedback, thanks. Honestly I don't know why I did things in this order in this video. I always set my levels, apply EQ, apply dynamics and then any effects. Must have been a complete oversight on my part, duh! 🤦‍♂️ I'm actually working on another audio series and the first vid is to set the levels followed by EQ, then dynamics. I actually address the same thing you just mentioned regarding normalizing and the peaks. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feedback, I appreciate it! 😁👍

And second, I wanna add a timelapse video to my timeline, so if I take 60-75 imgs and then put them one by one, one do I make them look like a timelapse? And if this ain't possible, is there anywhere from which I can download a sunset timelapse and use in YT without getting a copyright strike?

      Hi! Glad you were able to make it sound a little bit better. I will try the voice isolation to see if it helps remove some of the echo. Waves has a great plug-in called De-Reverb and it helps a lot with echo and reverb. I have to make a video about it still but it does a really good job. Just keep in mind that waves does not officially support Davinci resolve, although the plug-ins do work with no problems. But if you have any trouble using the plugin in Davinci Resolve Waves support, will not be able to help you.

    I am having trouble with a recording I did where my audio got messed up due to the noise gate in my recording software and my fan I'm assuming. The audio sounds horrible in the sense that my voice has a lot of bass and is constantly cutting in and out. I have tried the things in the video but cannot find a combination of settings that fix the issue, is there any why I can remedy this?

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  2 роки тому

      Hi! So to take care of the bass, I'd try adding a high pass filter and bring it up until it starts to cut out the bass of your voice. Or depending on where the bass is, you may need to grab a 2nd equation point, find the offending frequency (probably between 200 hz and 350 hz) and cut that frequency.
      As for the voice cutting out, if it was recorded using the gate, I'm thinking that audio is gone and you can't recover it. Unless the gate was applied in post, vs applied during the actual recording.
      I hope you're able to fix it up!

    There is a problem with the comparison at the end between the orignal and the finished product. The first problem with the original was the lack of volume, so that is the first thing you corrected. After that, you made a bunch of corrections to other things. In the comparison, you used the low volume version of the original. Since we all realize that the volume was too low, you should have, as the original, the track with the volume adjusted. Then, the subtle differences between before and after would be more noticeable.

    When you're doing the thing with the equalizer and the "sweeping", it basically all sounds awful when you crank it up like that. You have a keen ear to hear something "bad" among all that. Also that seems like a herculean task on a video with 10, 15, or even 30 minutes of dialogue. You spent 6 minutes (granted you're "teaching" so might be a little less normally, like 4 min) on EQing a 30 second clip. Sounds like hours and hours of work on a long video. I'm mostly just looking for how to get rid of the echo-y sound my voice has when recording video in my garage and it doesn't sound like anything you went over would actually do that. Guess my search continues!

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  2 роки тому +1

      Working with the EQ could take a long time. For me I’m in the same situation all the time in the same environment, so I just EQ a small section and it’s good to go for the rest of the clip. But if you’re in different situations I would split it into different tracks and tweak things accordingly.
      It’s gonna be pretty tough to remove the echo with just the tools and resolve. A little EQ work would help but you’re still going to hear the echo. Other companies such as Accusonus make plug-ins like a reverb remover which works pretty well. You may even be able to find a free plug-in that you can add into resolve to remove the reverb. The best thing to do is try and take care of it before you start recording, I know that would be very hard in a garage but maybe there is some small things you can do to help reduce the echo.
      You could try adding a gate or expander to help reduce the echo that occurs between when you’re talking. It might help minimize it a little bit. The noise reduction feature does not work so great, I don’t think it would do you any good in that situation.

Was hoping it was a quick fix with Resolve since it's a rather robust tool. Maybe I can just drop some duckets on a nice lavalier mic. i'll look into the plugins though. thanks again

    Super helpful, Jason, thank you! I have 2 questions for you:
    1 - when I'm scrubbing band 3 and 4 for "weird" sounds...what exactly are we looking for? Something that just sounds really hollow and odd? I've found some really odd sounding stuff usually between 1-2k range, but once I dip the gain and replay the audio...I can't seem to hear the difference. I DID hear it when I brought the gain all the way up to scrub though...
    2 - Can you explain what Hold and Release means in the tools?

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 роки тому

      Hi! Thanks for checking out the video! To answer your questions - 1) You just looking for something that sounds bad. For example, muffled, it has a piercing quality to it, sound very hallow or when you hit that frequency, you think, ew that sounds bad. Then drop the Gain just a bit below the 0 line. The goal is just to pull out frequencies that sound harsh. If you reduce the gain too much, it's going to sound bad as well. Usually with EQ, less is more and always cut before you boost anything.
      2) Hold is referring to the length of time that the compressor (I'm assuming you mean in the compressor) remains active after it stops receiving a signal. For example, there is talking, then the talking stops. Hold determines how long the compressor is active after the talking stop. Release refers to how long it takes from the time the compressor stops (determined by the hold) until the compressor is completely off/inactive. So do you want the audio to go back to 'normal' fast or slow? A larger Release means it gradually fade back to normal over a long period of time.
      Does that all make sense? If not, let me know. Hope this helps!

    • @realmisr
      @realmisr 4 роки тому +1

      @@JasonYadlovski Thanks for that, Jason! The question about hold + release is actually pertaining to using Gate. I know I'm to mess with those 2 options if I'm hearing my voice cut in and cut out, but I wasn't sure what they 2 options actually did. I guess I want to make the gate "less sensitive" if you get what I'm saying. Sometimes I would be speaking just a bit low, and the Gate would pick that up and cut it off completely.

    • @JasonYadlovski
      @JasonYadlovski  4 роки тому

      The hold and release mean the same thing for the gate. It should work in the same fashion. If you want it to be less sensitive, you'd probably want to also adjust the threshold, range and ratio.
