"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" (published in 1876 and written by Mark Twain) is about a boy (the titled "Tom Sawyer") who is adventurous and very clever AND rebellious. (I can't remember what his age was in the book... likely 11 or 12?) The song-writer (Neal Peart, Rush's drummer) wrote this song about a modern "today's Tom Sawyer" and the kind of man that might come from the boy. "No his mind is not for rent to any god or government... Always hopeful yet discontent... Knows changes aren't permanent BUT CHANGE IS!"

They're from Canada, and this song was recorded in a studio close to Montreal, where I currently live. Started in the 60's but played until their drummer died from brain cancer in 2020, since then, they still havent decided if they'll replace him or do something else. The lead singer also plays bass, keyboard and a kind of feet synthesizer, pretty impressive to watch live (they're not so far to where I live, and I went to their shows several times since the 80's. They changed genres several times since their start, and are amazing. I'll let someone else fill you in about the actual Tom Sawyer reference (I've read it long ago, so I don't remember much about it). Have a nice day, and see you in another of your reactions.

Rush was formed in 1968 by the rhythm\lead guitarist Alex Lifeson, the bassist/keyboard/vocals Geddy Lee and their original drummer John Rutsey. They had a few singles recorded, but their debut album wasn't released until 1974. The drummer left the band soon after recording their self-titled debut album, when they found Neil Peart to take his place, learned all the album's songs in two weeks and hit the road as the opening act for KISS. Gene Simmons heard their album, and thought they sounded like a Canadian Led Zeppelin and booked them as their opening act while they toured Canada. But Rush was so good, and Rush and KISS got along so well, that KISS kept them as their opening act throughout their U.S. tour as well.
The new drummer Neil Peart, also became their new lyricist, and Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart started their 40+ year career, continuing until 2015 when Neil retired due to health issues related to his drumming and he felt he wouldn't be able to play at his best anymore, and nothing less would do for the, by then, world famous GOAT drummer known as 'The Professor' with the famous label, "your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. Rush was inducted into the Rock & Roll hall of fame in 2013, with a recording record, at that time, of over 40,000,000 records sold, and third place, only behind The Beatles and The Rolling Stones with the most consecutive Gold and platinum albums. 24 Gold, 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) albums which includes 19 studio albums, 1 cover album, and many live album releases.
I'd like to recommend a song from they're debut self-titled album called 'Working Man.' I feel it is important to listen to the studio recording first, with their original drummer John Rutsey, but there are a couple of very popular live performances of the song with Neil Peart doing the drumming and adding in his own drum fill flourishes. But I believe the original studio recording still has the longest guitar solo by Alex Lifeson, which was often shortened in live versions because the original song is quite long and the guitar solos are why.

Rush is a three piece band from Canada. They had a 40 year career in hard rock, progressive rock and were considered the Godfathers of Progressive Metal.
Tom Sawyer is the title character of the Mark Twain novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). He appears in three other novels by Twain: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894), and Tom Sawyer, Detective (1896). The character is a young rebel who doesn't conform to what society wants him to be. That's what the song is about.
The band includes Geddy Lee on vocals, bass guitar, keyboards, bass peddles and some 6 string rhythm guitar, Alex Lifeson on Acoustic, 6 & 12 string guitar, backing vocals and backup keys plus peddles and Neil Peart drums, electric drums and full percussion (you need to watch his Drum solo's or Xanadu Live to know what I'm talking about by percussion).
Rush released 24 gold records and 14 platinum records (including three multi-platinum), placing them fifth behind The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Kiss and Aerosmith for the most consecutive gold or platinum studio albums by a rock band in the United States.
Over 170 songs recorded with many being a full side of an album.
Songs to start with: Subdivisions, YYZ - Live in Rio, Spirit of Radio, Working Man (Live in Cleveland), Limelight and when your ready Xanadu Live, 2112 (the comic book version), La Villa Strangiato
Others will get you giant list from there.

Welcome to Rush! I'm a new fan myself, of less than one year, but they are now one of my favorite bands. The cool thing about Rush is that there are only three guys in the band that create all of that sound! Some history of the band: Rush was formed in 1968 by the guitarist, Alex Lifeson, while he was still in high school. He asked his best friend since age 13, Geddy Lee, to join as bassist and vocalist. Geddy also plays keyboards, so in this video, you can see him doing all three (but in different shots). In concert, you will often see Geddy sing, play bass, play synth keyboards, and then play synth pedals with his feet while playing bass. He's a real multitasker! Neil Peart, the drummer you see here, joined the band shortly after their first album came out in 1974. Their original drummer, John Rutsey, left the band due to health issues and creative differences. Geddy and Alex wanted to play more complicated music. When they met Neil, he was the perfect fit. He is considered one of the best percussionists in rock music. Since Neil was intellectual and liked to read, Geddy and Alex asked him if he woudl write the lyrics, to which he agreed. Rush is deep lyrically, so it's a good idea to either read through the lyrics first or have them called up during your reaction. All three of these guys are virtuosos on their instruments. Neil Peart retired from Rush in 2015, and he passed away from brain cancer in 2020. Since then, Geddy and Alex have gotten together to perform publicly at a few tribute shows to other artists, and remain the best of friends, but Rush as a band is no more, sadly. They left us with 40 years of great music, and no two Rush albums sound the same. You definitely have to check out Rush live in concert; they are thrilling to watch! I suggest checking out the live version of the song 'Digital Man' from the Snakes & Arrows tour.

OK, so for one, Mark Twain wrote Tom Sawyer - a book about a rebellious boy named Tom Sawyer in 1876. He also wrote another story Called The Adventures of Huckleberry Fin in 1884, in which Tom makes a brief appearance. So technically this is history, since Mark Twain was one of the most influential American writers in history. And this song is about what that character would do, and think if he were alive in modern times.
And then... Rush. They officially released their first album in 1974, changed drummers in 1975 and then remained the exact same trio until they retired in 2015. Unlike other "classic rock" bands though, they remained active for all but a few years, releasing 19 studio albums which have all gone gold and/or platinum, and 12 live albums. They were active until the end, releasing their last studio album in 2013.
They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
They changed styles every few years, which also helped give them the staying power to keep going through each decade and remain relevant. Their first album was some rather generic Hard Rock. Then they shifted to Progressive Rock, then more mainstream rock for the early 80's. Then New Wave for the mid 80's. Then back to Mainstream almost Pop in the late 80's/90's. Then Alternative/Grunge throughout the 90's. In the 2000's they transitioned to a very Hard, almost borderline Metal style, and for their last albums, they shifted back to Progressive.
Above all else, Rush were just three really nice, easy going, goofy, family men. No drama. No hookers. No destroyed hotel rooms. No bashing instruments on stage. Which only made it sadder when the drummer and lyricist, Neil Peart, passed away from brain cancer in January of 2020, at only 67. 😭
If you want the full range of what this band is about, watch the Live 1981 concert of Xanadu (which is actually a 1977 song). But then (and this is where I'm deviating from the norm) watch the "lyrics on screen" version of Middletown Dreams. The first shows off their amazing musicianship and stage presence, the second shows off how deep and impactful Neil's lyrics could be.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is a book and Tom Sawyer is the main character in that book. It was written by humorist Samuel Clemens a/k/a Mark Twain in 1876. The song describes a "modern Tom Sawyer." The book was recently controversial for its frequent (but historically accurate) use of the "n-word." It was followed by "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" in which Tom Sawyer plays a secondary role. In 2023, the book "James" (by Percival Everett) reimagines the Huck Finn story from the perspective of Jim, the negro slave who accompanied Huck Finn in his adventures. Some interesting "background" on the subject of this song released in 1981.

Great reaction to one of the greatest bands ever. You should check out Spirit of Radio and Limelight both are great song. Rush was my favorite band for years until I started listening to an all-girl Japanese hard rock band named Band Maid. They are an extremely talented group with over 130+ plus songs in the past 11 years. If you want your subs and views to go up react to them you will not be disappointed. When I say they are great I’m very serious, when Jimmy Page saw them he had his picture taken with the drummer. I can’t express how good their music is. Where most bands have songs that are less than desirable nearly everything they write you will hear new things on the 12th listen. Suggestions would be Hate? Official live, From Now On, Moratorium live, Puzzle live, and Warning live just to get started. If you dive in you will be so glad you did.

That's the famous LeStudio in Quebec Canada. Several many well known groups recorded albums there including Rush, David Bowie, April Wine and The BeeGees. It was bought at one point and the name was changed. It eventually closed and what's left of it now is a burned out hulk.

Back in the 80's Canadian rockers Rush was one of the biggest touring acts in the world. Rush have 24 gold albums, 14 platinum albums, and 3 multi-platinum albums. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.
The drummer the late great Neil Peart is considered by many drummers in rock as their influence and one of the best to ever get behind a kit.

    • @freddiejupiter442
      @freddiejupiter442 28 днів тому

They should have been inducted at least 15 years earlier. Here's a list of others that should be in. Remember, some of these aren't rock per se, but that never stopped the bozos like Jan Wenner before in letting them in.
Dave Matthews Band, Joe Cocker, Bad Company, Sonic Youth, John Coltrane, Brian Eno, Steve Winwood as a solo act, The Doobie Brothers, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Soundgarden, Thin Lizzy, The Smashing Pumpkins, King Crimson, Janes Addiction, Oasis, Joy Division/ New Order, Alice in Chains, Ronnie James Dio, Björk, Warren Zevon.
The RRHOF is the most unfunny joke in music.

      @jeffconnors407 27 днів тому +1

@@freddiejupiter442 There are so many inducted to the RRHOF that have nothing to do with the genre but yet are in there, it's kind of a slap to the face to those who are deserving that are in rock and roll. I don't think you would ever see Pink Floyd in the Hip Hop hall of fame or Nine Inch Nails in the country hall of fame so why does the Rock and Roll hall of fame let in all genres when they have their own.
And yes, Rush should have been inducted years before but when there is only so many inducted per year you have to wait while the hall is being polluted by non Rock artists. Before anyone shits on me I'm not saying those artists aren't deserving, just not in the" Rock and Roll" hall of fame.

Tom Sawyer is a character created by Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) written in the 1870s, I think, but set in the pre-civil war era. He has adventures with another character, Huckleberry Finn. The stories were noted for having quite progressive views of black people for the time, but the stories have been controversial to study in school since due to the use of the n-word. Tom Sawyer was used by Neil Peart (Peer-t) and co-author Pye Dubois (Doo-bwah) as a short form for people with free-thinking and progressive views. Hence "What you say about his company, is what you say about society." The only other thing about Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn the characters alluded to in the song is "The River" - in which Huck Finn and Tom help a slave named Jim escape from his master by riding a raft down a river to freedom. Glad you liked the song. RUSH were active for 40 years and changed their style as their listening tastes changed. Initially they were very much Led Zeppelin/The Who/Yes influenced, but then came under the spell of The Police and a lot of British New Wave stuff.

Welcome to Rush! Three master musicians from Toronto, Canada who had a 40 plus year career.
Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass, keyboards and pedals
Alex Lifeson acoustic and electric guitar, mandola, pedals and later keyboards
Neil Peart Drums, Percussion and Main Lyrist.
Unfortunately Neil Peart passed from brain cancer in January of 2020. He is considered one of the best drummers in rock.
The band was formed in 1968 by Alex Lifeson with Geddy Lee soon joining. Neil Peart joined the band in 1974 after the release of their first album. Their original drummer left due to health issues and musical direction differences.
This video was filmed at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada

Three super talented guys produced some many great songs. Lyrics but the drummer Neil Peart always talk abou some social content or some sort of critic. Neil had tragedies in his life and passed few years ago due to cancer. He is so respected that is called the professor. Hear more from them. Very good.

Rush is from my hometown. They played in local hockey rinks. They started in the 70's. They use to record at Metal Works in mississauga Ontario Canada 🇨🇦. That studio has shut down but there was 2 studios and the one east of Toronto Ontario is still open. 2112 album is a classic as well. Do the whole album as one video. It's a bit long but worth it. Glad to see you back.

Tom Sawyer was not an author. Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) was the famous American author who wrote the fictional novels Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn etc., who were characters about adventures on the Mississippi River.
