This was amazing when it came out in 1999. A great experience on the big screen. Mind-boggling. Still holds up very well. And: Neo having to accept a cookie from Oracle during her talk with him is probably one of the best program related jokes of all time.
Unintended "joke" according to the Wachowski's in an interview many years ago. Most people had no idea what a "cookie" was in 1999. In fact, they changed humans being used as memory-capacity to being a power source since they believed most people in 1999 weren't computer-literate enough to understand.
@@Timmycoo I wonder, could the cookies be a means of keeping track of Neo? Is she helping the Architect keep tabs, maybe tracking his journey until they meet in part 2?
The marketing for this was brilliant. It presented a stylized sc-fi action film, but didn't show anything about the machines in the real world or the reality/simulation theme. When the reveal happened, it blew everyone's mind.
Exactly. Just a few snippets of action scene and no reveals. Everyone went in totally blind. That’s my theory now on movies. The longer the trailer the worse the film will be.

I love the scene in the car where they get rid of his bug. When Switch calls Neo "Copper-top", she is calling him a Duracell battery. Back in the 80s there was a commercial for Duracell where they called themselves the Copper-top battery. She is telling him that he is nothing more than battery feeding the machines.
I saw this with a group of friends in a theater in 1999. Usually we would go for drinks after and talk about what we just saw. Total silence and many vodka tonics later, we said good night.
I remember when this came out and I was in my early teens. It was amazing. Still is. One of my favorite movies. Often replicated but never duplicated. I remember owning this, Men in Black, and Independence Day on VHS and re-watching them all the time. The amount of references this movie spawned is crazy.
I think a lot of people miss the subtext of the second movie. They really went deeper into a lot of the more obscure philosophical and computer-architecture aspects compared to the first one, and that lost a lot of viewers.
@6:30 Haha, good imitation of the window squeegee sound. In the DVD commentary they mentioned that the squeaking of the window cleaners was supposed to be a sort of metaphor for Neo rubbing the insides of his pod trying to get out and be free.
I really keep a fantastic memory of this movie when i saw it for the first time in a theater. It was really a mind-blowing experience, the two other movies didn't have this novelty compared to this one. It was really revolutionary, a important milestone in the cinema history for scifi movies.
Great reaction, Emma! I remembered that the Oracle said Neo has the gift but it looks like he's waiting for something. "Your next life, maybe." And then he dies and is resurrected by Trinity!
I live in Sydney where the Matrix was filmed and have been to about 10 filming locations and live near 4 of them. Seen them for a few years now and still makes me smile to see them in real life. :)
I think it's worth also checking out the sequels, Matrix 2 and 3, and the recent Matrix 4 (which is more of a nostalgic trip). They might not be as awesome or surprising as the first, of course, but they have their moments. Also, there is an animated movie; Animatrix, with several separate animated short movies. It does fill in some gaps as well. Thank you for your reaction video, it was really fun watching!
I love watching you react to movies, Emma 🙂 Your reactions reveal your thought processes, and I always enjoy watching them. You have to watch the whole matrix trilogy, at least once.
The matrix is simply an ultra high definition video game. Games have rules (laws of physics) Agents (mini-bosses) have stats higher than the normal players but Neo has the ability to mod the game in real time to give himself even higher stats than the bosses have and even change the game itself. The protagonist has to have something to overcome otherwise you get Gary Stu/ Mary Sue characters, which most audiences reject.

I see Castaneda, Klingsor's garden, & Percival, Homer, Zen, Plato, Gurdjieff, superman etc. Another of similar standard is Guy Ritchie's _Revolver_ Craziest in this area i've seen is Alejandro Jodorowsky's _The Holy Mountain_ but it's stunning in colour and art.
Fun Fact: I don't know whether it was a deliberate homage or not, but the idea of something called The Matrix, a construct/computer built of minds, is at least as old as 1976 when the Doctor Who series The Deadly Assassin depicts the Time Lords as having a massive computer/virtual environment that is build using the minds of all deceased members of their race, and much like here The Matrix can be entered using special equipment by a living mind and explored.
@17:45 Smell is actually rarely used while dreaming...
