As an Australian, and someone who lived near the plant, and talked to a number of the people there (from the floor, to upper management), I'd have to say that this video is about 30% of the story, and about 1/2 correct. There's so much more that happened, but I don't expect you guys to know any of it.
Thanks for bringing at least some of this story to America, I really appreciate it. Some of the 5,000_ people who called the Holden plant their lives would thank you too.
Even as someone who's more in to Hondas than Holdens, I would have fought tooth and nail to keep that factory there, employing Australians and producing unique and useful vehicles til my dying days. Those people deserved to be there, and GM had no fucking idea what the Australian market wanted, which was proven after they axed the Elizabeth plant and started importing the Opel Insignia, calling it the "New Holden Commodore".
Imagine if GM axed the Camaro and imported some random European sedan, and rebadged it "Camaro" and then expected every American to welcome it with open arms. That's what happened to us in Australia. It doesn't even matter than the car was more powerful, or fuel efficient, or had the same towing capacity. The Commodore wasn't a spec sheet, it was an Australian designed and manufactured vehicle, made by and bought by Australians. To feed us some Euro car with the same name was just rude. Even Ford had the decency to axe the 'Falcon' namebadge after they stopped making the car in Australia. It really makes you realise how poorly managed GM is, and how the faster they fold and pull out entirely, or just completely bin their management and rehire, restarting from the ground up, the better America, and the world will be.
fredmackay Many Americans were pissed off when GM got bailed out in 2008 and proceeded to do the usual corporate bailout gig of laying off thousands and giving the executives. Their quality has increased since then but I won’t ever buy a GM car simply because they’re not worth my business. Perhaps Holden could have better survived if they were allowed to spin off as their own domestic brand. Let Holden live as a domestic only manufacturer in Australia until they gain enough capital to start exporting again. Although that would mean competition from a former part of GM and American exporters of cars only really care about their domestic divisions and to them foreign markets only exist to make their domestic products better
well said mate, i live in adelaide aswell and nearly everyone i knew, knew someone that worked at the plant past or present. the new "commodore" was a disgraceful decision on there part and bringing in cheaply made imported car from Thailand just took the cake. i have my own part of holden history sitting in my shed as a reminder of what they were, a car designed and built by aussies, and enjoyed by aussies.
I love Holdens and when your buying a Holden people want a rear drive V8 with a manual not a tt V6 like the “new” commodore, GM fucked Holden with changing what we had to what they wanted. In the commodores Australian built life it never had a 4cyl engine because people don’t want them. Also the union party were demanding higher pay for people on production lines and some cracked over $100,000 a year for putting a car together. This is for donut

As an Aussie I've been a Ford man all my life. The demise of Holden saddens me greatly. In Oz, Ford, Mopar and Holden people put shit on each other all the time, but if anyone of us break down it's always the Holden guy helping the Ford guy or Mopar guy helping the Holden guy etc. Aussies love performance V8 cars. Yes we are loyal to our brand, but we are street machine supporters first. We relate more with the U.S than Europe. Call it a colony thing.
I have been a Ford man my entire life, 82 ford falcon xe sports as my first car in 91, then bought a Mitsubishi which was totalled parked outside along with 5 other cars, selling my 2000 ford explorer us xlt tomorrow and get a Holden VT commodore executive stationwagon monday
For us, you were literally a for or Holden family
I know this is a year old but...
I reckon it was probably if not the best thing about our car culture; Just putting shit on each other and having a laugh.
With my parents growing up as "Aussie tuners / street racers" With my grandpa owning a 71 torana and grandma owning a 82 falcon it was always the shit talk amongst the family that made us a family. We're all gear and rev heads.
When I was born, My mother had a really nice clubsport with my father having an AU falcon and well we all know how that goes (Which he now owns a mustang)
But at 16 (now 22) I got my very first VY II Commodore and my sister well... she got a nissan silvia and that broke my dads heart HAHAHA but I'll always remember watching the Bathurst and all the V8 series screaming at my dad and sister that ford sucked and Holden was always superior HAHAHAHA
I think myself as what they call "the future generation" will miss the most is having my kids not have the same experience with what I had. Shit sucks :(
I have a mate with an XC Cobra, I have an EK Holden. We now talk about Australian made cars, there is no more brand conflict
Few figured this out, but I had a father that worked ten years in GMH Elizabeth. He raved about working in secret rooms to design the headlining of HQ's and all sorts of probable bullshit. Anyway, what I did learn from being in the army and travelling across the country was that it was easier to get Holden parts in SA, and easier to get Ford parts in Victoria.
Everyone outside Australia:
Who's gonna buy a racing sedan pickup?
The Australian market:

V8 utes are undeniably the most practical sports car in history. Not selling mine any time soon
@@Cammac8 Commodore Utes are pretty compromised from a utility perspective - can only handle 500kg in the tray due to IRS, and if you get one with a hard lid they are even less practical in most ways than a hatchback or wagon. Falcon ute is better due to live rear axle (1200kg load), but trades some of it's sportiness away for it. The biggest sell of the Commodore/Falcon ute isn't actual practicality but rather bogan street cred.
@@tmmtmm if Holden Commodore ute owners wanted to actually put more than 500 kg in the bed, they would get aftermarket suspension better suited to the loads
@@dukeboreham2782 The limitation is not the rear springs compressing under the weight, it's the strength of the suspension arms and monocoque chassis. The suspension design is exactly the same as what is in the sedan/wagon and not designed for carrying heavy loads. If you put >500kg in an IRS commodore you risk buckling/breaking the suspension arms and chassis, even if you fit super stiff springs. There are a few funny pictures floating around of Commodore utes with hectik camber on the rear wheels and laying chassis on the ground after the suspension arms gave up under the load.
Holden made a '1 tonne' version of the ute that came with a box tray/bed, live rear axle and leaf springs if you wanted more load capacity (>1000kg as per the name) - sporty it was not. The girlytruk crewman also came with live axle and decent load capacity if i'm not wrong.
I'm an American and that's all I really want. A muscle car with a bed. I need the bed here and there, and love the look of street trucks, but D by do any heavy hauling or towing, and a muscle car would be best for me 75% of the time... So I want both . But El Caminos are all old, inefficient rustbuckets now, or else they're in prime condition for a hella big price and still noisy, uncomfortable, fuel sucking cars... I want something like the Holden Ute, where styling, comfort, and efficiency has kept up with the times all the way to today.

Holden died because of what GM lacks: Competent management.
British Leyland anyone?
One thing that wasn't mentioned was how GM had the profitable (at the time) GM Holden purchase Daewoo, aka GM Korea, which took up a lot of Holden's resources. Then the influx of relatively low-quality Daewoo vehicles to Holden's lineup like the Barina (Chevy Aveo) & Viva (Chevy Lacetti -- aka the reasonably priced car) did little to boost Holden's reputation for quality.
@@TheRealFobican worse they lied and stole aussie tax dorrars
@@TassieLorenzo that’s true. Donut media mentioned something customers economical, he does have a point, because I used to know someone who used to work for the Holden manufacturing plant for almost 20 years and he was saying one of the issues with Holden was they weren’t mechanically the best as they used a 1960s standard engine to this day and just made the exterior parts of the engine look new/modern when it wasn’t instead of updating their engines or moving forward with the times
Lack of competent management and corruption was a big part of the Holden story in Australia too.

The "Last Car" pictured is an SSV Redline Commodore, not a W1

Old Man In A Boxster lol get mad. The reason they were better was because they didn’t have engine technology that would date back to the 70s yet u whinge about how old the Falcons are? Ok then. Plus I think the whole point of an Australian car is for it to have a good motor (being ranked the highest on the list because that’s what actually drives the car), be fairly cheap to run, do long distances, sit a load of people, be reliable (unlike the pushrod princess’s over in the Bommodore camp) and a car in which u can have fun with like chucking it into a corner and kicking the rear end out instead of being all serious captain Bogan with lap times. @@黒キツネ-九零二一零 I was looking at a Gen 2 VF Maloo GTSR and nothing for less than $150k AUD. Shame you have tk convert them in the US. In Aus we can drive left or right handed cars.
@@JM0X-007 no shit. It's a gtsr. That's like me complaining that the demon is too expensive. Also, I didn't know it was gonna be this hard to find an automatic HSV maloo base. Might as well say screw it and get an old or new pursuit/super pursuit for the time being. I already found a ve GTS that I want. Also, idk which is a better performer, the GTS or the clubsport R8
Never clicked faster in my life, Love Donut, rest in peace Holden😞
I’m not Holden my breath. I cannot believe you missed that opportunity
Couple of minor inaccuracies, but thanks soo much mate for doing a vid on this, love the subtitles.
If you haven’t watched this with captions on you are missing out .
To the cheeky bastard that did it, you’re a bloody legend !
Ahhh yes, the ve/vz commodore. Australia’s favourite lawn ornament to the local crack house
Would be closer to the vt-vy generations, vz-ve is more P platers
You mean vt
Aiden Doak yeah as the vz/ve are the cheapest on the market now where most vt/vx’s are too bashed to use
Some of you must have little or nothing better to do with your spare time? ITS OBVIOUS THAT YOU ARE A FORD DRIVER . THATS OK BUT KEEP SHIT COMMENTS TO YOUR SELF .
GM ruins literally everything they touch
*EA CARS , ITS IN THE SALE*
First Saab and Pontiac, now Holden... :(
Including their own cars.
@Josh Lafoe Great examples of boring car manufacturers. The only cool things they make is camaros and corvettes.
Idk man, my Geo Prizm is still kicking strong 25yrs on.
Ok these closed captions are GOLD, spot on about Bitsaremissing too.
i love the subtitles in this, my god. 10/10
How to save your car company :
Step 1 : Stay away from GM
Step 2 : finished
@Joshua N. Ajang True. EA also Out here shutting down companies everywhere while producing garabage themselves
Rip Pontiac. It saved GM and then was discarded
Holden and Opel entered the chat
@@janwrede4555 Opel seem to be back on track after PSA bought them.
That wasn't an option for Holden since they were bought early by GM to enter the Australian market in the early 20th century. They even started off building coach kits on Chevy platforms before they spent millions of pounds on an "All-Australian" car, even though it was heavily influenced by mid-size Opel platforms and was styled on Chevrolet bodyshells.
The last time I was this early James's dad was still here.
same :,(
Dude, harsh
So... never
So you are his wife????
The captions though...
11/10 for the closed captions / subtitles. This was amazeballs on multi levels
Even us Aussies miss having holden being produced in Australia
Day 5 of asking up to speed on the ford falcon
bruh this felt like an up to speed on holden, but rip holden either way :(
Lewie The Ex-Commie we had one of those a couple months ago but you aren’t wrong, like and an up to speed where are they now?
I could tell when Holden was on its way out, it's when they started bringing in a rebadged version of the Chevy Equinoxs and the Acadia which Holden had never done meaning something was going down
Holden signed their death warrant when they started rebadging Daewoos.
Should have made a modern Torana
*GM started rebadging Daewoos, after buying Daewoo and using them to supply half of all their cars for most of their brands.
Weren't they basically like Open cars the same way as Buick cars are rebadged with slightly design changes open cars in the USA?
@C. Fecteau agreed
@@TheRealFobican Well at least the Opel (Buick) cars looked good and drove well, unlike the Daewoo ones...
The closed captioning is incredible - well done!
I agree! 😂
This needs to be watched with the subtitles on for Aussie translation.
I've owned a lot of Holdens over the years, but by far my favourite was my 1977 Hatchback Torana V8! Absolute classic that I never stop regretting selling.
Last time I was this early, GM was still busy killing SAAB
North miss Saab
Last time I was this early, there wasnt as many economically illiterate kids blabbing about things they know nothing about even though the video provided most of the information for you in order to avoid posting an ignorant comment like you just did.
@@DesertStateInEU last time I was this early, there weren't salty little babies crying in the reply section
One thing: Don’t sell your company to GM!!
Or Ford
@@esheel826 at least after Ford is done, the brand is still alive
Unfortunately for Holden he had no choice as he was going bankrupt so sold it to gm to save the company, In 1930 or whatever it was, it got sold long before Holden ever made it's first car lol
We need up to speed on ford Australia already
or at least the falcon
Yep need the iconic falcon, kills the holdens
Taj Chirn not when they killed themselves first thanks to rubbish drivers like DJ
Agreed 👍🏽
Honestly the falcon always broke down. Commodore was way better
As a Singaporean, I also like Holden when I see it during my university days there... All the big V8s in the taxis and Police cars are just awesome. Hope Holden will make a comeback
RIP Holden, my favourite car company since I was a kid down here in Australia😥
I really wish holden to be resurrected but the costs of building and people going with cheaper made cars.
i.e Kia, Mazda, Hyundai.....
There's a rich history of Holden motorsport as well, it's sad to see it end.
The v8 supercar series.
Holden v Ford
Love the subtitles on this episode! Translating Aussie slang needs to be an option on all videos 😂
Colloquially, I'm what's now termed as a fossil. In a relatively short period of time Australia has gone from a fairly proud vehicle manufacturing country to one that now builds nothing. We built GM products & Holdens, Fords, Chryslers, BMCs, Toyotas, Mitsubishis, Nissan/Datsuns, Hillmans and assembled other marques such as Mercedes, Peugeot, Renault. We also assembled tractors such as Fergusons and Fords, we built a vast range of trucks including Internationals, Dodges, Fords, Commers , Macks (I think they're still in production) Austins and many others.
I've listened to all the reasons for decades but I am still saddened by the loss of the industry and the country's reliance on imports.
If a military crisis arose, how could we swing into defence production? What factories remain? We've been caught with our pants down around our ankles with this cursed coronavirus.
We have no fuel reserves and very little capacity to defend ourselves. History has proved to expect the worst when we're most vulnerable. I want to be wrong but it's certainly worth a thought.
Not even a military crisis, look at how we're struggling trying to manufacture and source medical equipment with the current crisis.
@@markhalden3922 These problems are not confined to Australia.
Whenever I'm there, I look for gifts made in Australia to bring back with me. Slim pickings.
High wages/high taxes/high energy costs mean that someone will always undercut you. Getting the government involved makes things even worse. Add to that a tiny domestic market and geographic isolation and you're left with digging stuff out of the ground and flogging it.
If you look, quite a few other world nameplates have added mfg facilities in Canada. Why? Because of NAFTA in regards to the US auto makers. It's cheaper than the US and free to import "domestic" vehicles Then export them for an eve larger profit. Yah, it sux all around but that's what happens when Big Biz; with paid politicians in their hip pockets; allow them to take advantage of the consumer.
This has to be watched with BOTH the audio playing, AND (while) you keep your eyes on the closed-caption text going by. Hysterical!
Sadly the Chevy SS sedan is the closest I’ll ever come to driving a Holden.
U should look on VINWiki YT, it's possible to get a road legal under 25 yo Holden in US
The Chevy SS is a Holden. An SS Commodore. The market in the USA didn't seem to take to it, but I get that you guys are pretty spoiled for choice.
My dad owns a Holden Commodore SS and its the right hand version of the Chevy SS, the value of the SS Commodore in NZ is going crazy not sure bout the US
@hudson I guess that means we have access to more lemons. We no longer make any cars here. Mitsubishi, Toyota, Ford and Holden (GM) all used to produce here. Now, none of them do, although a few truck brands still build locally (Volvo & Kenworth for example).
@hudson Criminal mismanagement of government grants to Holden + GM USA + Unions = a crippled car manufacturing industry. Rich people don't take losing bets man. That how we ended up in this mess. Funny how the tariffs and luxury tax are still on the imports even though there is no longer a local industry to protect...
I have a Hyundai i30N daily driver, but have a VR R8 in the garage that I've had since new. Glad I have that with low k's so it's value is also climbing. Be sad to cash it in one day though.
Honestly it was cool asf that Australia had their own car I love the diversity of it
GM’s biggest mistake was acquiring Daewoo and thinking that this would answer their prayers for small / medium economical cars. They were absolute garbage!
Apparently they sold well in Ireland.
Why? Daewoo built cars to a price point. As Kia has demonstrated, if that price point moves, quality goes up
Andrew Rollason Daewoo went bankrupt for a reason.
@@re20bt And GM in America didn't go into Chapter XI?
True. It's a great pity Isuzu exited the car building game in favour of SUVs and Utes. The Gemini was a great small car. Far better than any Daewoo.
Thanks so much for the post. I have a 2007 HOLDEN CALAIS HSVi VE V V8 ... lots of letters, I know. I purchased mine on special order and it is a one-off. It is badged in the engine bay [HOLDEN SPECIAL VEHICLE INDIVIDUAL]. It cost me $75,000.00 brand new and I have never ever had any trouble with it. My model also won the prestigious Australian car award in 2006, WHEELS CAR OF THE YEAR. Your post, and many other reviewer's posts on the demise of HOLDEN, makes me angry every time I see what GM in the USA had done to our national icon. It took away around 200,000 jobs from Australians and as you stated, now there are no cars at all being built in Australia. There are so many Australian billionaires in this country that I have no idea why they just all couldn't get together and save HOLDEN and give GM "the flick". I look forward to the day when HOLDEN will come back. My own car was serviced today, I spoke to the staff about this issue and one Lady told me that HOLDEN had been in her family for over 70 years. Her Father worked for HOLDEN for over 40 years, she's been working for HOLDEN for over 20 years. She has 2 HOLDEN's and now all they are really doing at my local dealership is servicing Australian made HOLDENs, they are hardly selling any of the American and German imported and re-badged HOLDENS. Australians do not want other country's cars calling themselves HOLDENS. I think that this is a great "kick in the teeth" to GM in the USA. Mess with Aussies ... we'll show our disgust by not buying any of your re-badged cars! My car has now increased in price as it is not only rare, but also a one-off. I will never sell my HOLDEN. Again, thanks for the post mate. DM
